ST KALLISTRATOS & 49 HOLY MARTYRS

OF

CARTHAGE

St Kallistratos was a native of Carthage. An ancestor of St Kallistratos, Neochoros,

has served under Emperor Tiberius in Palestine, under the command of Pontius
Pilate, the Procurator of Judea, and was a witness to the suffering on the Cross
of our Lord Jesus Christ, His voluntary Death and Glorious Resurrection.
St Kallistratos Father was a Christian, and he raised his son in Faith and Piety. Also
like his Father, St Kallistratos became a Soldier and excelled among his pagan
military comrades by his good conduct and gentle disposition.
At night when everyone slept, he usually stayed up at Prayer. Once, a soldier
sleeping nearby heard St Kallistratos invoking the Name of the Lord Jesus
Christ, and he reported this to the Military Commander, who in turn summoned
St Kallistratos, interrogated him and tried to force him offer sacrifice to idols.
The Saint resolutely refused to do so, and the Military Commander ordered that he
be beaten into submission.
Covered with bleeding wounds, St Kallistratos was dragged over sharp stones but
despite these brutal torments the persecutors could not break down the firm
will and brave endurance of the Holy Martyr.
St Kallistratos was sewn up in a leather sack and thrown into the sea to drown.
By Gods Great Mercy, however, the sack struck a sharp rock under the waves and
was ripped open, setting St Kallistratos free and able to escape, being assisted
safely to the shore by dolphins.
Having witness this Great Miracle of such a Powerful God, forty-nine soldiers
accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
Having been re-arrested, together with the 49 converted Soldiers, the Military
Commander ordered them to be imprisoned after being subjected to
innumerable (illegal) floggings.
While they were all together in prison St Kallistratos continued to preach the Word
of God to the Soldiers and he bolstered their spirits and prepared them for
Martyrdom.
They were summoned again before the Military Commander, but they all firmly
Confessed their Faith in Christ, after which they were bound hand and foot and
thrown into a dam to drown.
However, their bonds broke, and with bright faces the Holy Martyrs stood in the
water, rejoicing in their Baptism, which occurred with their Martyrdom.
Suddenly 50 beautiful bright Crowns of Victory appeared over their heads, and
everyone heard a Voice say: Be brave, Kallistratos, with Thy company, and
come rest in the Eternal Habitations.
At the same time, the Earth shuddered and an idol standing nearby fell down and
smashed into dust.
Seeing this, another 135 Soldiers also believed in the Almighty Lord Jesus Christ.
The Military Commander, fearing a mutiny in the ranks, did not put them on trial,
but once again imprisoned St Kallistratos and the other 49 Holy Martyrs.
They fervently prayed and gave thanks to our Creator for granting them the Power
to endure their sufferings.
That night during the darkest of hours, St Kallistratos and the 49 Faithful Soldiers
were cut to pieces by sword by order of the merciless, cruel Military
Commander.
Their Holy Relics were buried by the 135 Soldiers who had converted but who had
not yet been persecuted for their Faith.
Later, as St Kallistratos had foretold, .a church was built on the site of their
sufferings.
May the Memory of St Kallistratos & his fellow Martyrs be Eternal, and may they
ceaselessly Intercede with Christ for our Deliverance and Salvation.
