Kinematics
Constrained motion, types, kinematics link or element, kinematics pairs, kinematic chains, mechanism
and machine, basic four bar chain., inversions, slider crank chain, double slider crank chain, their
practical application.
Velocity and acceleration diagram
Relative velocity and relative acceleration, velocity vector diagram, acceleration vector diagram,
determination and velocity and acceleration at any point on the link (corliolis component to be excluded)
Topic velocity and acceleration diagram is to be limited to four bar mechanism and single slider crank
mechanism.
Flywheel
Function of flywheel, fluctuation of speed and energy, moment of inertia and weight of flywheel.
Governor
Different types, functions of governor, comparison of flywheel and governor, hunting of governor,
Sensitivity of Governor
Clutches and bearings
Friction in collars and pivots, uniform wear and uniform pressure conditions, simple cone clutch, single
plate clutch, multi-plate clutch, journal bearings, anti friction bearings, classification.
Brakes
Band brake, shoe brake, band and block brake, only working principle of Internal Expanding brake,
simple problems
Mechanical Drives
Merits and demerits and applications of Belt, rope, chain and gear drive.
Belt, rope and chain drive
Open and cross belting required, velocity rates considering belt thickness and slip, ratio of tensions, horse
power transmitted, transmission of centrifugal tension, stepped pulley, rope and V-belt expression for
ratio of tensions, chain drives and their applications.
Gears
Different types, gear terminology, law of gearing, cycloidal and involute teeth profiles, comparison,
interference (Theory of minimum number of teeth required to avoid interference is to be excluded).
Gear trains
Simple, compound, reverted and epicyclic gear train. Calculation of speed of various elements in
epicyclic train (Bevel gears and more than two stages are to be excluded).
Cams
Types of cams and followers(including oscillating cams), Motions of followers: Constant velocity,
Constant acceleration and retardation, S.H.M.
Balancing: Concept, Need for balancing, Definition of static and dynamic balancing, balancing of
several masses rotating in the same plane, balancing of reciprocating masses
Vibrations: Introduction, elements of a vibrating system, types of vibrations, Critical speed, causes and
remedies for vibration

Laboratory Work -It will consist of minimum ten exercises based on above topics.
