Incumbent serves as Building Inspector I for the Plan Commission Department, performing on-site inspections on new and
existing residential, commercial, and other structures to ascertain compliance with applicable laws, codes and engineered
specifications regarding footing and foundations of structures, structural component assembly, heating, cooling, ventilating,
plumbing, and electrical systems, fire resistive construction, accessibility, energy, conservation and occupancy requirements.
Duties:
Conducts on-site inspections of new and existing structures as assigned, to ascertain compliance with applicable statutes,
codes and regulations, and issues stop work orders as necessary. Responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
Analyzes blueprints prior to projects release to determine suitability of materials for structural, mechanical, electrical,
plumbing, and life safety code compliance, specifies engineering reports, drawings, and tests necessary construction
requirements.
Responds to inquiries from builders, contractors, surveyors, and members of the general public concerning building codes.
Completes inspection reports; follows daily itinerary and maintains records of inspections, condition citations and final
approval. Enters data into data base.
Periodically attends training workshops and seminars to maintain knowledge of applicable codes and regulations pertaining to
construction.
May assist in conducting on-site inspections of zoning violations and complaints. Assists with taking photographs of violations.
Assists with researching and preparing Notice of Violation for noncompliance with building codes, including preparing records
and documents for legal hearings. Inputs violations, photos, and other documents into data base.
Receives and investigates citizen complaints regarding division operations and initiates appropriate action to resolve issues.
Periodically testifies in court pertaining to decisions and operations of the department.
Monitors vehicle maintenance within departmental standards.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety,
drug-free work place, and personal conduct.
Working knowledge of codes, rules, procedures and regulations of construction methods and techniques, electric, plumbing,
HVAC, building codes, 1 and 2 family dwelling codes, and ability to apply regulations to a variety of specific cases and
situations. (ICC Certifications preferred)
Knowledge of all county roads and subdivisions.

Working knowledge of standard office procedures and routines and ability to apply knowledge to a series of inter-related and
standardized operations and tasks.
Ability to operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, and calculator.
Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences between data, people, or things.
Ability to compute and perform arithmetic operations, including measuring, figuring, tabulating/test survey results,
developing operating budget, and determining charges.
Ability to compile, collate, or classify data and analyze, evaluate, observe, diagnose and investigate situations.
Ability to use standard English grammar including spelling, pronunciation and speaking clearly.
Ability to write and edit reports, and prepare and give public presentations.
Ability to type with speed and accuracy.
Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, surveyors, Auditors Office, Treasurers Office, Recorders Office and
members of the general public in a courteous, effective and tactful manner, including being sensitive to professional ethics,
gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.
Ability to occasionally respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
Possession of valid drivers license and demonstrated safe driving record.
