Angles/Distances look at the player receiving the ball can he open his body
(angle) and get half turned to be able to bring other players into play. Supporting
players should look at the player receiving body shape. Distance dont close
space down (it is easy for players to ball watch and accidentally close down the
space between themselves and the player with the ball

Turning

Organisation
Mark out a 40m x 40m area with 4 areas 10m x 10m in each corner. Play 3 teams of
4 players,
4 v 4 in the middle area and 1 player in each corner area. Players in
middle area cannot go into corner areas. Play possession and team in possession
can play into corner areas to retain possession but cannot play back into the same
corner area once it has been passed out. If defenders win possession they play with
the men in the corner areas.
Key Points
Create space individual and as a team - individual (lose marker take defender
away and then come close or vice versa) Team (width/length use all space
available) key coaching point = ensure that there is at least one player acting as
a centre midfield player. If all players are spread around the outside it is easy to
defend against. Having a player in the centre of the pitch allows the team in
possession to switch play and change the point of attack.
Awareness space and defenders coach players to be aware of where
defenders are (usually players get drawn towards the ball so coach players to
stay out of the crowded area near the ball. Key coaching point do not just tell
them to stand miles away in a position that isnt supporting play. Coach the player
to continually move but also stay out
Individual Technique when/where turning in the right areas if it is on to keep
the ball and play forward then encourage players to play forward dont turn for
the sake of turning.
Key Coaching Point player in possession must be aware of where the defender
is if he is going to turn, if defender is on his right-hand-side then obviously he
should turn to his left and vice-versa

Coach a player to turn when his/her forward pass is blocked and he has no
support ahead of him. However, it may be too difficult to turn so he has to keep
possession and wait for support from team mates.
Selection of pass long pass into one of corners (laces/lofted), short intricate
passes in congested area
Movement/timing of runs movement of players to support the target players is
key. Player in the corner has to have at least 2 options in good supporting
positions
Timing of runs to support the player in possession leave it too late and the
player in possession has no options and will eventually give the ball away. Too
early and the space is closed down and it is too difficult to play.
Good end product turning in the right areas end product would be retaining
possession and switching play by using a turn.

who can move up and down the sideline. Team in possession can use the floating
players who are conditioned to a maximum of 2 touches. Floater on outside of pitch
starts practice by passing ball into larger area.
Objective
Team in possession to run the ball into either end zone.
Key Points

Improving Forward Runs

Organisation
Mark out an area total 50m x 30m with two 10 x 30 end zones. Play 4 v 4 in central
area with 2 floating players.
Objective
Team in possession to pass the ball into the end zone for a forward runner. Floating
players cannot pass into end zone. When a team gets ball into end zone they retain
possession and now attack the other end zone.
Key Points
Create space individual/team - individual (lose marker take defender away
and then come close or vice versa) Team (width/length use all space available)
key coaching point = ensure that there is at least one player acting as a centre
midfield player. If all players are spread around the outside it is easy to defend

behind the ball when the player in possession cant turn. If the player who
receives the ball can turn (communicate tell them they can turn) and then
support ahead of the ball if the player receiving the ball can turn. Maybe overlap
the player in possession, cross over etc.
Individual technique
Selection of pass - if it is on to play forward early do so with a drilled pass along
the floor or a lofted pass (depending on position of defenders). Selection of pass
is dependant on the run from supporting payer. If player is running at full speed
then a quick pass into the end zone is required.

Dribbling

Organisation
Mark out a pitch of 40m x 20m. Play 4 v 4 on the pitch with 2 GKs in goals.
Objective
To dribble and score goals.
Key Points
Create space as individual and as a team to either receive the ball or for a team
mate to receive the ball individual (lose marker take defender away and then
come close or vice versa) Team (width/length use all space available) key
coaching point = ensure that there is at least one player acting as a centre
midfield player. If all players are spread around the outside it is easy to defend

Receive on half turn, positive attitude feel where defender is, take defender
away then receive the ball on half turn. Attitude to beat the defender
Create 1 v 1 situations supporting players can create space by overlapping
player with ball. Movement off the ball from supporting players is essential to
create 1 v. 1 situations.
Support behind/advance of the ball - Support Behind (a player should support

Individual technique willingness to beat the player, step-over, fakes, do things at
speed pointless doing several step overs and not getting at the defender.
Selection of pass if player in possession is faced with a 2 v. 1 situation then
passing is the best option. Start again if you have to. Good quality pass into feet is
essential for players receiving the ball. A slow pass will enable the defender to get
tight and prevent attacking player to turn and dribble.
Movement/timing of runs players ahead of the ball must pull out wide and take
covering defender away to allow player in possession to have a 1 v. 1 situation

Close Range Finishing

Organisation
Set up an area 30m x 20m. Play 4 v 4 in the area, 2 GKs with full size goals and a
floating player on each side to act as servers. Servers can also be used to create
opportunities to shoot.
Objective
Shoot and score goals. Whilst this is an attacking game there is a need to defend to
make sure the team in possession are not caught on the counter attack.
Key Points
Movement create space (length & width). When a team wins the ball, stop the
session and coach the team to create space by using all the length and width. Use
wide players to drag defenders out of position. If floating players are crossing the
ball look at strikers crossing over, zig-zag runs, communication between attacking
players. One goes front post one goes back post
Awareness of defenders Individually feel where the defender is, create space
by taking the defender away and then quickly changing direction.
As a team look at shape of defenders, if defenders are out of position, exploit
the space either by passing or dribbling into space
Body shape get half turned to enable the player to shoot quickly. Body shape
when shooting body over ball for low drilled shots, fake to shoot one way and
shoot the other.
Decision shoot or pass Be confident! shoot early if its on? Pass if other
player is in a better position to score. Key coaching point coach attacking team
to look at position of keeper if keeper is on one side of the goal then obviously
aim for opposite corner. If off his line then encourage players to attempt to lob the
keeper (if in large goals).

can turn (communicate tell them they can turn) and then support ahead of the
ball if the player receiving the ball can turn. Maybe overlap the player in
possession, cross over etc.
Positive attitude let ball run across body or control to shoot Head up shoot or pass decision making, key coaching points because it is

side of the pitch. Place 4m goals at either end. Start the game by one of the floaters
passing the ball into the area.
Objective
Team in possession to try and score a goal.
Key Points
Reduce space nearest player to ball applies pressure individual defending
fast approach, slow down on players touch, arms length away. Be patient!
Cover/support from team mates depending on pressure on the ball
angle/distance look at shape of players covering the player closest to the ball.
Are they in good supporting positions??
If ball is switched coach the team to slide across together as a unit. Work-rate
close down the space individually and as a team.
Recovery pressure from front to win the ball or recover behind ball if attacking
team start to counter attack then work hard to get behind the ball and get goalside. Mark space/player when recovering get into a good covering position
behind the payer applying pressure
Squeeze up the field as ball played backwards Key coaching Point players
will forget to do this so it is an easy point to get across. If the attacking team play
the ball backwards then move up and squeeze play. But keep the shape of the
team as you push up

player who plays for the team in possession. Play offsides.
Objective
Attacking team to get a shot on goal or score. If defenders win the ball they can
counter attack to score.
Key Points
Win the ball or intercept Be patient! Intercept passes from opposition. Force play
into their half and force maistakes.
Deny space nearer to goal more pressure if opposition get close to defending
teams goal then get really tight BUT DONT DIVE IN and allow opposite player to
beat you in a 1 v. 1 situation.
Delay drop and encourage recovery runs if opposition have good possession
then drop and allow them top play in front of you. Dont let them get in behind. If
they do get in behind then encourage players to get back and get goal-side.
Deflect dictate to attackers which passes they make
Defend when to press the ball despite being outnumbered eg within shooting
distance pressing the ball in the defending 1/3 is essential to stop shots/scoring
opportunities. Be careful not to get caught out by being outnumbered.
