Mathematics Olympiad

Mathematics Olympiad activity on a national level has been one of the NBHM's
initiatives since 1986. One of the main purposes of this activity is to spot
mathematical talent amont High School children. NBHM has also taken on the
responsibility for selecting and training the India team for participating in the
International Olympiad every year.

For the purpose of administering Olympiad contest, the country has been divid
16 regions. The Olympiad Programme leading to India's participation in the
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) consists of the following stages:

Stage 1: Regional Mathematics Olympiad (RMO): RMO is held normally b

September and the first Sunday of December each year in different regions in
country. All school students of Class XI are eligible to appear for RMO. This Oly
is a 3-hour written tets containing about 6 to 7 problems. On the basis of the
performance in the RMO, a certain number of students from each region is sel
appear for th second stage. Reginal coordinators charge nominal fees to meet
expenses for organising the contest.

Stage 2: Indian National Mathematics Olympiad (INMO): INMO is held o

first Sunday of February each year at various centres in different regions. Only
students selected on the basis of RMO from different regions are eligible to ap
INMO. INMO is a 4-hour written test; the question paper is set centrally and is
common throughout the country. The top 30-35 performers in INMO receive a
certificate of Merit.

Stage 3: International Mathematics Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)

UNMO certificates awardess are invited to a month long Training Camp in May/
each year. In addition, INMO awardess of the previous year who have satisfact
gone through postal tuition throughout the year are invited again to a second
of training. On the basis of a number of selection tests through the Camp, a te
the best six students is selected from the combined people of junior and senio
participants to represent India in the Internation Mathematics Olympiad.

Stage 4:International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO): The six-member te

selected at the end of the Camp accompanied by a leader and a deputy leader

consist of two 4-and-a-half hour written tests held on two days with a gap of a
one day. Travel to IMO venue and return takes about two weeks. Student of th
team who receive gold, silver and bronze medals at IMO receive from NBHM a
prize of Rs. 5000/-, Rs. 4000/- and Rs. 3000/- respectively during the followin
at a formal ceremony at the end of the Training Camp. MHRD finances interna
travel of the 8-member Indian delegation while NBHM (DAE) finances he entire
countryprogramme and takes care of other expenditure connected with interna
participation.

About NBHM
The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was set up by the Government of India under the
Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), in the year 1983, to foster the development of higher
mathematics in the country, to formulate policies for the development of mathematics, help in the
establishment and development of mathematical centres and give financial assistance to research
projects and to doctoral and postdoctoral scholars. NBHM functions essentially autonomously framing
its own budget taking into account the funds made available by DAE. The objectives of the board are:
to promote the growth of higher mathematics in the country; and to coordinate activities for the
development of mathematics. The functions of the NBHM are:

To continuously evolve and implement policies and programmes for the development of
mathematics in the country.
To help in the establishment and development of mathematical centres.
To give financial assistance to research projects and to doctoral and postdoctoral scholars.
To assess the nature and extent of mathematical inputs necessary in applications ophisticated
mathematics is involved. and to suggest steps for training adequate personnel specially in areas
where
To determine the funds required for these activities and to administer these funds through
suitable machinery set up for this purpose.

NBHM usually meets twice a year, to discuss its programmes and various proposals received from it's
board members as well as from mathematicians all over the country. It has six sub-committees; viz.
the Research Programmes Committee, the University Programmes Committee, the Mathematics
Olympiad Programmes Committee, Nurture Programmes Committee, Examinations Committee and
Library Grants Committee. They consider proposals, throughout the year, for financial support for
varied mathematical activities, from institutions and individuals. Decisions of NBHM are based on the
recommendations of these committees. The responsibilities of various committees are described in
Annexure I. NBHM normally provides financial support only to Indian nationals and institutions.
Currently NBHM grants postdoctoral fellowships, Ph. D. scholarships, M.A./M.Sc. scholarships for
research/education in mathematics. NBHM provides financial support to the Mathematics Olympiad
activity, run in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, for students at the
junior college/high school level. NBHM provides financial support for holding
conferences/seminars/workshops and instructional schools. Granting financial support to libraries of

mathematics departments of universities and research institutions in the country is one of the major
activities of NBHM.

Mathematics Olympiad
The Mathematics Olympiad activity was undertaken by NBHM from 1986 onwards and is currently run
in collaboration with the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai. One main purpose of this
activity is to support mathematical talent among high school students in the country. NBHM has taken
on the responsibility for selecting and training the Indian team for participation in the International

Mathematical Olympiad every year. While NBHM coordinates and supports Mathematics Olympiad
contests all over the country, regional bodies, mostly voluntary, play an important role at different
stages. For the purpose of administering Mathematics Olympiad contests, the country has been
divided in 16 regions. A regional coordinator is responsible for conducting these tests in each region.
The names of the regions and their respective regional coordinators are given at the end.General
Information about Mathematics ContestsThe Mathematics Olympiad Programme leading to
participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad consists of the following stages: Stage 1:
Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)RMO is held in each region normally between September and
the first Sunday of December each year. The regional coordinator ensures that at least one centre is
provided in each district of the region. All high school students up to class XII are eligible to appear for
RMO. RMO is a 3-hour written test containing about 6 to 7 problems. Each regional coordinator has the
freedom to prepare his/her own question paper or to obtain the question paper from NBHM. The
regions opting for the NBHM question paper hold this contest on the 1st Sunday of December. On the
basis of the performance in RMO, a certain number of students from each region are selected to
appear for the second stage. Regional coordinators charge nominal fees to meet the expenses for
organizing the contests. Stage 2: Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)INMO is held on the
first Sunday of February each year at various Centres in different regions. Only students selected on
the basis of RMO from different regions are eligible to appear for INMO. INMO is a 4-hour written test.
The question paper is set centrally and is common throughout the country. The top 30-35 performers in
INMO receive a certificate of merit. Stage 3: International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp
(IMOTC)The INMO certificate awardees are invited to a month long training camp (junior batch)
conducted in May-June, each year. In addition, INMO awardees of the previous year that have
satisfactorily gone through postal tuition throughout the year are invited again for a second round of
training (senior batch). Stage 4: International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)The team selected at the
end of the camp, a "leader" and a "deputy leader," represent India at the IMO that is normally held in
July in a different member country of IMO each year. The leader and deputy leader are chosen by
NBHM from among mathematics teachers/researchers involved in the Mathematics Olympiad activity.
IMO consists of two written tests held on two days with a gap of at least one day. Each test is of fourand-a-half-hours duration. Travel to IMO venue and return takes about two weeks. India has been
participating in IMO since 1989. Students of the Indian team who receive gold, silver and bronze
medals at IMO receive a cash prize of Rs. 5,000/-, Rs. 4,000/- and Rs. 3,000/- respectively, from NBHM
during the following year at a formal ceremony at the end of the training camp. The Ministry of Human
Resource Development (MHRD) finances international travel of the eight-member Indian delegation
connected with international participation. NBHM finances the entire in-country programme and takes
care of other expenditureStudents aiming for selection for participation in IMO should note that RMO is
the first essential step for the programme. To appear for RMO, students should get in touch with the
RMO co-ordinator of their region well in advance, for enrolment and payment of a nominal fee.Syllabus
for Mathematics OlympiadsThe syllabus for Mathematics Olympiads (regional, national and
international) is pre-degree college mathematics. The areas covered are: number systems, arithmetic
of integers, geometry, quadratic equations and expressions, trigonometry, co-ordinate geometry,
systems of linear equations, permutations and combinations, factorisation of polynomials, inequalities,
elementary combinatorics, probability theory, number theory, infinite series, complex numbers and
elementary graph theory. The syllabus does not include calculus and statistics. The typical areas for
problems are: number theory, geometry, algebra and combinatorics. The syllabus is in a sense spread
over class IX to class XII levels, but the problems under each topic are of an exceptionally high level in
difficulty and sophistication. The difficulty level increases from RMO to INMO to IMO. A good idea of
what is expected of students in Mathematics Olympiads can be had from the following two books:

Nurture Program
Every year the faculty of the IMO training camp selects about 20 students of class XII, from the senior
batch who have shown a special interest in mathematics for participation in the Nurture Programme of
NBHM. Any of these students formally pursuing mathematics at the undergraduate level (B.A./B. Sc or
an integrated M.A./M.S. course) is entitled to a scholarship of Rs. 2500/- (Rs. Two Thousand Five
Hundred only) per month from NBHM. Selected students may participate in the nurture programme
even if they choose not to pursue a formal programme in mathematics at the undergraduate level.
The nurture programme is of four-year duration. Each batch of students is assigned to a faculty of
active research mathematicians. The faculty devises a syllabus for the students for each academic
year and also guides them with proper references. The faculty also keeps in touch with the students
through post. At the end of a year the students are called for a contact programme with the faculty for
three to four weeks. During this period the faculty arranges lectures on diverse topics and clears
specific difficulties of the students. In addition, they are given tests to assess their progress. Based on
the performance of the student the faculty decides on whether the student should/should not continue
in the programme. In case of the students who are not pursuing a formal undergraduate programme in
mathematics the faculty also recommends whether the student can be offered an annual scholarship
of Rs.15,000/-(Rs. Fifteen Thousand Only) in the next year. After the completion of four years in the
programme the students are awarded certificates. It is envisaged that the mathematical scholarship of
these students will be on par with or superior to that of most M.Sc. (Mathematics) degree holders in
the country. For more information visit the website www.geocities.com/rbbapat

What is a Mathematical Olympiad?

A Mathematical Olympiad is a problem solving competition open to
all "mathletes". The aim of the competition is to test innate problem
solving skills. The problems are restricted to those that require
minimal background and high ingenuity. Since one of the goals of
such olympiads is to identify talent at a young age, these olympiads

are usually restricted to students not yet admitted to any

undergraduate programme.
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World
Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students
and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in
1959 in Romania, with 7 countries participating. It has gradually
expanded to over 100 countries from 5 continents. IMO 2012 was
held in Mar del Plata, Argentina. IMO 2013 was held in Santa Marta,
Colombia.

India has been participating in the IMO since 1989 and hosted it in
Mumbai in 1996. The 6-member Indian team for the IMO is selected
through a three-step procedure, organised by the Homi Bhabha
Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National
Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and funded by the
Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.

Team India in IMO 2015 was felicitated at Homi Bhabha Centre for
Science Education,
Mumbai, India on July 17, 2015. Persons who can be seen above are
(from left) Professor M.S. Raghunathan, members of Team India
(Soumik Ghosh, Shourya Pandey, Pranjal Warade,
Jeet Mohapatra, Anant Mudgal, Sagnik Majumder), Professors S.G.
Dani, V.M. Sholapurkar and B.J. Venkatachala.
In IMO 2015, the Indian Team members and their performance were
as follows: Soumik Ghosh (Honourable mention), Sagnik Majumder
(Honourable mention), Jeet Mohapatra (Silver medal), Anant Mudgal
(Honourable mention), Shourya Pandey (Bronze medal), Pranjal
Warade (Bronze medal).
In IMO 2014, the Indian Team members and their performance were
as follows: Soumik Ghosh (Honourable mention), Jeet Mohapatra
(Bronze medal), Sagnik Saha (Silver medal), Supravat Sarkar
(Honourable mention), Anish Prasad Sevekari (Bronze medal),
Chaitanya Tappu (Bronze medal).
In IMO 2013, the following members of Indian Team won medals:
Sagnik Saha (Silver), Shubham Sinha (Silver), Pranav Nuti (Bronze),
Anish Prasad Sevekari (Bronze), Pallav Goyal (Bronze).

Step 0: The RMO Training Camps

(RMOTCs)

Several RMOTC's have been organized of late: (i) during May 28-June
2, 2012 and October 30-November 2, 2012 at ISI, Kolkata, (ii) during
12-14 June, 2012 and 6-7 November, 2012 at North Bengal
University.
If any academic institution wants to organize similar camps with
help from us, the organizers are encouraged to contact us by
sending email to rmo@isical.ac.in. We shall be glad to support such
activities by providing resource personnel. We shall consider

supporting such camps even when the number of participants is

small.

Step 1: The Regional Mathematical

Olympiad (RMO)

The Regional Mathematical Olympiad is a state level examination, a

stepping stone towards the national level examination, the INMO.
The next RMO (RMO-2014) will be held on Sunday, December 7,
2014 during 10.00 a.m. to 12 noon and during 1.00 p.m. to 4.00
p.m.
The next RMO (RMO-2014) will consist of two tests, the first of
duration 2 hours and the second of 3 hours. The first test will be
based on multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and in the second about
6 to 7 problems will be asked which the applicants will have to solve.
We shall grade all the answer-scripts of the first MCQ-based test and
based on the performance of the participants in it (i.e., the first
test), we shall select an appropriate number of participants whose
answer-scripts of the second test will be graded.
Who can appear for this test?
When and where is the exam held?
What is the structure of the test?
How many are selected?

Step 1.5: The Indian National

Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp
(INMOTC)

An INMOTC is

organized at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata

(ISI, Kolkata), 203 B.T. Road, Kolkata 700108 every year.

Step 2: The Indian National Mathematical

Olympiad (INMO)

Who can appear for this test?

Mukul Chaudhuri Memorial Prize

We are happy to announce the establishment of Mukul

Chaudhuri Memorial Prize for the best girl student from
each Class VIII to XII, irrespective of whether they are
selected for INMO or not, provided they score a minimum
qualifying marks. The Prize, in form of books, is made
possible by a generous gift from Professor Soma Chaudhuri
of Iowa State University, in the memory of her mother.

Mukul Chaudhuri (1922

- 2007) was a talented

student of mathematics. She received the KirtichandMackenzie Memorial Gold Medal in 1938, awarded to the
candidate with the highest marks in mathematics in the
Calcutta University Matriculation Exam. She completed her
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in 1942. However her
academic career was cut short due to the political situation

at the time (Partition of India). She became a school

teacher in mathematics and taught in a variety of schools,
both in India and abroad. Even though she couldn't further
her own academic career, she encouraged numerous girls
to pursue higher education in mathematics-related
disciplines.

Who can appear for this test?

The RMO is meant primarily for students of Class IX--XI. As special

cases, exceptionally talented students from Class VIII may be
allowed to appear at the discretion of the Regional Coordinator.
Please note that the RMO is the first step in selecting the Indian
team for the IMO! This requires special talent in problem-solving and
interest in Mathematics. It is not meant for the average or even
good student who does not have this.
Where and when does the test take place?
The Regional Mathematical Olympiad for West Bengal is usually
held on the first Sunday of December at the various test
centres. In 2014, it will be held on December 07, 2014.
Current
centres: Balurghat,
Bankura,
Berhampore,
Burdwan, Contai, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Kharagpur,
Kolkata, Krishnanagar, Mohanpur, Narendrapur, Purulia,
Raiganj, Santiniketan and Siliguri.

A student will have to choose two different centres convenient to

him/her. The coordinators may cancel a centre under unforeseen
circumstances or if the number of candidates opting for a particular
center is small. Also, in order to avoid problem(s) arising out of
accommodating too may candidates in a centre, they may allot the
centre of his/her second choice to an applicant.
What is the structure of the test?
The RMO will consist of two tests, the first of duration 2 hours
and the second of 3 hours. The first test will be based on
multiple-choice questions (MCQ), and in the second about 6 to
7 problems will be asked which the applicants will have to
solve. We shall grade all the answer-scripts of the first MCQbased test and based on the performance of the participants in
it (i.e., the first test), we shall select an appropriate number of
participants whose answer-scripts of the second test will be
graded.
How many are selected?
Till 2013, each region selected 30-35 students for the INMO.
