?????

1. Calculate the heat loss per square metre of outside surface area if a heated sphere,
20 cm in diameter, covered with 5 cm of insulation (k = 0.06 W/mK). The inside
and outside surface temperature of the insulation are 3000 C and 500 C respectively.
[16]

2. A closed cycle gas turbine uses helium as the working substance. The gas enters
the compressor at 4 bar and 320K and discharges at 16 bar and 590K. It then
enters a regenerator of 70% effectiveness. The turbine inlet condition is 15.5 bar
and 1400K. The turbine exhausts at 4.2bar and 860K and enters the regenerator.

(a) the compressor and turbine efficiencies

(b) the thermal efficiency of the cycle

(d) the helium flow rate for a net power output of 100 MW. Take Cp and γ for
helium as 5.2 and 1.67 respectively. [16]

3. What are homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures? In which engines these mix-
tures are used? Explain. [16]

(b) Compute the radiant energy loss from 1 cm diameter opening in a thin walled
furnace located in a large enclosure, if the temperature with in the furnace is
9000 C and the surroundings are at 200 C. [6+10]

6. (a) Why is over-cooling in an engine harmful?

(b) What are the two main types of cooling systems? Where these system are
used?
(c) Describe Miller super charging. [4+4+8]

mum pressure of the cycle is limited to 50 bar and cut off is 10% of the stroke.
Calculate
i. Compression ratio
ii. Clearance volume and
iii. Thermal efficiency. [8+8]

8. (a) Explain the boundary layer concept and define clearly hydrodynamic and ther-
mal boundary layer thicknesses.
(b) A rectangular duct 30 cm × 20 cm in cross section carries cold air. The
temperature of the outer surface of the duct is 50 C and surrounding air tem-
perature is 250 C. Find the heat gain by the duct assuming one metre duct is
exposed to the air in vertical position. [8+8]
