1. (a) Write a brief note on the income statement. [4]

(b) During the month of October, the following information was obtained in an
antifreeze retailing concern: [12]
Salaries Rs.3,000
Delivery expenses 700
Rent 400
Sales 15,100
Antifreeze available for sale during October(at cost) 20,000
Antifreeze inventory on October 31(at cost) 11,600
Other expenses 1,200
Earned surplus before income taxes as september 30 800
Machinery and equpment(at present value) 18,000
Prepare an income statement for the month of October giving as much detail as
possible.

2. Discuss the optimum design for fluid flow (to determine the optimum economic
pipe diameter). [16]

3. Synthesis gas may be prepared by a continuous, non catalytic conversion of any

hydrocarbon by means of controlled partial combustion in a fire-bride lined reactor.
The hydrocarbon and oxidant ( oxygen or air ) are separately pre heated and
charged to the reactor. Before entering the reaction zone the tow feed stocks are
intimately mixed in a combustion chamber. The heat produced by combustion part
of the hydrocarbon pyrolyzes remaining hydrocarbons into gas and a small amount
of carbon in reaction zone. The reactor efficient then passes through a waste heat
boiler, a water-wash carbon-removal unit, and a water cooler-scrubber. Carbon is
recovered in equipment of simple design in a firm which can be used as fuel or in
ordinary carbon products. Prepare a simplified equipment flow sheet in the process,
with temperatures-and pressure. [16]

4. (a) Mention various types of depreciation. State clearly the causes of each type
of them. [10]
(b) How does depletion differ from depreciation? Explain it with examples. [3]
(c) Discuss the effect of maintenance and repairs on depreciation of a machine.[3]

5. A plant is being designed which requires a fixed capital investment of Rs.100 lakhs.
It is estimated that the working capital will amount to 25% of the total investment

1

and annual depreciation costs are estimated to be 10% of the fixed capital invest-
ment. If the annual profit will be Rs.30 Lakhs, determine the standard per cent
return on the total investment and the minimum payout period. [16]

6. The purchased cost of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger with 100 m2 of heating

surface was Rs. 3,000 in 1980. What will be the purchased cost of a similar heat
exchanger with 200 m2 of heating surface in 1980 if the purchased-cost-capacity
exponent is 0.60 for surface area ranging from 100 to 400 m2 ? If the purchased-
cost-capacity exponent for this type of exchanger 0.81 for surface areas ranging
from 400 to 2000 m2 , what will be the purchased cost of a heat exchanger with
1000 m2 of heating surface in 1985? [16]

7. Describe the different types Insurance and mention what is meant by Self-Insurance.
[16]

8. (a) Write short notes on profitability. [8]

(b) Explain in detail about the design-engineering practice for interest and invest-
ment costs. [8]
