b) What is the role of Engineer in bioprocess? [8+8]

2.a) State Vanderwaals equation of state. Explain all the terms.


b) Vanderwaals constants of nitrogen gas are a = 1.39; b = 0.03913. Calculate the
pressure exerted by 50 liter of gas at 470 C. Find the number of moles. [6+10]

3. State and prove Bernoulli’s theorem for incompressible fluid and indicate the
corrections necessary for its applications. [16]

4. Enumerate Newton’s law of Viscosity. Explain the importance of Viscosity in


fluid motion. What is the effect of temperature on viscosity of water and that of
air? [16]

5.a) Briefly explain Reynolds number and its importance.


b) Distinguish between laminar flow and turbulent flow & write briefly on the
following:
i) Friction factor chart.

6. Discuss in detail the determination of pressure drop for flow through bed of

1.a) How are biochemical reactions different from chemical reactions?


b) Briefly explain the steps in development of a complete bioprocess for commercial
manufacture of a new recombinant DNA derived product. [8+8]

2. By electrolylsing a mixed brine a mixture with the following percentage


composition (by weight) is obtained at the cathode: Cl2 = 67%, N2 = 28% and
O2 = 5%. Using ideal gas law, calculate the following.
a) Composition of the gas by volume.
b) Density of the mixture in mg/m3 at 300C and 720 mm Hg.
c) Specific gravity of the gas mixture.(air=1.0) [16]

3. Water is to be pumped from a storage tank through 7.5cm dia pipe of 200m long
to an over head tank situated at a height of 20m from the level of the pump. Using
the additional data find the power required.
Data: Mass flow rate = 8.0 kg/sec
Frictional losses = 0.15 J.sec per meter of pipe
Pump efficiency = 60%. [16]

4.a) Distinguish between Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids by their shear stress
shear rate behaviour. Illustrate with sketches.
b) State any two parameter model for describing a non-Newtonian fluid. Briefly
write on Bingham fluid. [8+8]

5.a) Derive Hagen Poiseuille equation. Explain the significance of the equation.
b) Derive relations for Reynold’s number and friction factor. [8+8]

6. What is meant by fluidization? Explain the phenomena of fluidization. Give the


advantages and disadvantages of fluidization. [16]
