Orkney
BRILLIANT

Orkney holds a rare magic. Among these 70 islands, you

will find energy, life, history and the future. With each day
bringing a different adventure, Orkney doesnt just promise
one brilliant moment, it gives you dozens.

Every season on Orkney brings new wonders. Spring

erupts with joyful flowers. In summer, you can walk
in the glow of the midnight sun. Autumn brings rare
migrant birds. In the winter, you may see the Northern
Lights creating a colour show above your head.

Where will you go first? You can travel back in time

6,000 years and visit Neolithic Orkney. Culture was
flourishing here before the pyramids were built. Or
see the future by investigating the renewable sources
of energy on the islands. Best of all, you can see both
in one day.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

There are charming towns and villages to explore,

rich in history and culture, and full of tempting shops,
cafes, pubs and restaurants. Or escape into the great
outdoors. Youre only ever a few minutes from
low-lying moorland, tranquil lochs, white sandy
beaches and dramatic cliff walks. Walk, cycle, drive
or dive wherever you go, nature surrounds you.

Within this beautiful cluster of islands, Orkney

encapsulates all thats great about the outdoors.
Among the gentle green valleys, you can discover ancient
archaeological sites. The dramatic cliffs throng with
birdlife and flowers. Sprawling white beaches invite you
to walk and picnic. Each island has its own charm and
there are hundreds of discoveries to be made.

The Mainland, Burray

& South Ronaldsay

Rich in archaeology, dotted by

bustling towns and villages, and
blessed with natural attractions, the
Mainland is a fascinating destination
and the perfect touring base.

Kirkwall The largest town on

the islands, it has the ancient and
magnificent St. Magnus Cathedral
standing at its heart.

I loved my whole stay in Orkney,
but Birsay was absolutely the
most beautiful place I have been.
And the path to Skipi Geo and
further on was just marvellous
for a photographer like me.

04

Stromness A long established

seaport, the old town has a
charming and winding main street,
steeped in history and ready to be
explored.
West Mainland With its many
inland lochs, the West Mainland is
ideal for a leisurely tour. No trip is
complete without a visit to the lovely
Brough of Birsay and the dramatic
cliff walks.
East Mainland and over the
Barriers You can reach South
Ronaldsay across the Churchill
Barriers, so dont go home without
visiting the Neolithic Tomb of
the Eagles and the Italian Chapel.

Hoy & Graemsay

Enjoy soaring cliffs and fascinating

ancient sites on Hoy the second
largest island within Orkney. Its
excellent for walking, and the
dramatic summits of Ward Hill
and the Cuilags are well worth the
climb for spectacular views. Its also
home to the Dwarfie Stone the
only rock-cut tomb in Britain. And
dont miss Rackwick, a picturesque
crofting village.
Lying between Hoy and Stromness is
the unspoilt island of Graemsay. The
lighthouses of Hoy High and Hoy
Low are well worth a visit for their
striking architecture.

Flotta

Westray & Papa Westray

With its oil terminal and history as a military

base in both world wars, theres a lot of recent
history to see on Flotta. Highlights include the
Rocket Batteries, St. Vincent Pier, Buchanan
Battery and the Peerie Museum. Photographers
love the 360 degree panorama from the Witter.

Moments of Discovery

A tour of Westray offers many attractions. Start

at the Heritage Centre and include Noltland
Castle and Cross Kirk. The worlds shortest
scheduled flight takes you to Papa Westray and
the oldest house in Northern Europe the Knap
of Howar which predates the pyramids by over
1,200 years.

Shapinsay

A half hour ferry ride from Kirkwall, Shapinsay

offers Elwick Mill, the standing stone of
Mor Stein, Broch of Burroughston and the
RSPB site at Mill Dam. The heritage centre in
Balfour village is a good place to start, before
heading to the RSPB reserve, WWII sites and
the many beautiful beaches.

Sanday, Eday & Stronsay

Sanday by name and sandy by nature, the best

beaches are to be found here. On Eday, explore
ancient chambered tombs, the Norse Castle of
Stackel Brae and 17th century relics.

On Stronsay, visit the natural arch at the Vat

of Kirbuster, the natural swimming pool at
Bluthers Geo and the Picts houses at Lamb
Ness. Stronsay is fantastic for cycling.

Rousay, Egilsay & Wyre

Rousay has been nicknamed The Egypt of

the North due to its richness in archaeological
sites over 166 including Midhowe Broch and
Cairn. On Egilsay you can walk around the wellpreserved Norse church of St Magnus. Wyre
boasts a castle built in 1150 by the legendary
giant, Cubbie Roo.

North Ronaldsay

The most remote of the islands, tradition

thrives here. The coastal walks take you past
many landmarks, including the Broch of Burrian
(an Iron Age settlement), the New Lighthouse
and the original beacon, built in 1789. The 13mile sheep dyke surrounds the island and keeps
the famous seaweed-eating sheep on the shore
and off the agricultural land.

Brilliant for Being Outdoors

BRILLIANT FOR

Being
Outdoors
Orkney is an explorers paradise, putting the best of
the great outdoors at your feet all year round. Bask in
summer birdsong as you walk through gentle heathland.
Or wrap up for winter walks and enjoy the pounding
breakers and taste sea salt in the air.
Walking on Orkney takes you into beautiful open spaces and lets
you lose yourself in nature. There are signposted routes, so you can
choose an easy ramble or a long strenuous trek. And dont forget
your camera as the scenery is magnificent.
Cycling on Orkney is at its best when you leave the tarmac behind
and get off road. There is something for everyone to enjoy as there
are flatter rides as well as more challenging routes. Best of all, bikes
go free on all inter-isle ferries, so you can explore somewhere
new everyday.
If your sport relies on the wind, Orkney is a fantastic destination,
providing a year-round playground for power kiting, wind surfing
and kite surfing. Favourite locations include Scapa Beach near
Kirkwall and the Bay of Skaill on the West Mainland. Big waves and
good breaks make Skaill the serious surfers choice, and you can hire
boards and wetsuits locally.
Keen sailors return year after year to tackle Orkneys challenging
winds and currents, and there are races throughout the summer
months if you enjoy friendly competition.

Brilliant for Being Outdoors

Orkney is brilliant for Fishing

For visitors and beginners, to the more experienced,

the hardest part of starting out is knowing when, how,
and where the best places to fish are in Orkney. There
are over a hundred miles of sea trout shoreline and
numerous inland lochs to fish from.
The best bank fishing, or wading as it is known locally,
is generally at the beginning of the season from March
until the end of June. From July onwards, the bulk of fish
can be expected to be offshore and mainly out of range
for even the deepest wading angler. In the early months
March & early April feeding fish will be found in very
shallow waters. As the water and the days warm-up,
the fish will spread out over the shallows, staying within
casting distance of knee-deep water until late June.

The best big Orkney wading lochs are Harray,

Stenness, Hundland and Swannay. Harray has large
areas of shallows where wading anglers can ply their
trade Joseys bay, Bankhead Bay, Merkister Bay,
Nistaben, Ballarat, Kirk Bay are the best. Stenness is
a loch where the fish are bound to the shoreline and
the easiest wading venue, but the fish can be
remarkably fickle!
There are local anglers that offer a ghillie service with
boats and motors on all the lochs, this is by far your
safest option and should guarantee excellent boats,
motors and fishing.

Chris Bonington

I had been talking about

doing the Old Man of Hoy
for some years and my
reaching the ripe young age
of 80 this year, it seemed a
good time to put our plan
into action.
We took the ferry from Scrabster to
Stromness and got our first glimpse of
the Old Man under a dark and stormy
sky. It brought back so many memories
as it was in 1965 that I made the first
ever ascent. This year I climbed with
Leo Houlding who holds the record
for being the youngest person ever
to climb the Old Man at the tender
age of 11.
We also climbed with Andy Torbet
from BBCs The One Show and that
film will be aired sometime this year.
We cant wait to come back to Orkney,
who knows I might even climb the
Old Man again on my 90th!

BRILLIANT FOR HISTORY

Briliant for History

The Heart of
Neolithic Orkney
The West Mainland of Orkney is a landscape full of ritual,
with ceremonial stone circles and tombs aligned to the solstice.
Orkney is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its one of the densest
collections of ancient monuments in Britain, the mysteries of which
are still being unravelled. We invite you to travel back in time
and walk in the footsteps of our ancestors.

Right now, Orkney is rewriting history. The discovery

of the Ness of Brodgar a complex of monumental
buildings has caused historians to rethink what
they know about ancient Britain. There are dozens
of buildings, among them one of the largest roofed
structures built in prehistoric northern Europe.
Artefacts found at the site suggest it was a place of
worship, pilgrimage and trade, and you can see some
of these items on display.

Also within a stones throw of these monuments is

Maeshowe an enormous chambered tomb, about
4,800 years old. The craftsmanship of the stone
masons will astonish you as step inside. Its hard to
believe such precision was possible with the tools
of the time. To see Maeshowe at its most magical,
visit during the winter solstice when the setting sun
shines straight in, illuminating the interior of the
tomb.

Half a mile from the Ness, youll find the Ring of

Brodgar a circle of giant standing stones over
104 metres wide. Nearby is a second famous
stone circle, the Stones of Stenness. These
megaliths are even bigger, towering over you
at a mighty six metres, and dating back to
about 3100BC.

Until recently, it was thought that each of these

monuments had an individual history, but now its
becoming clear that they are connected in a grand
scheme, pointing to a well-developed society.

Discovered by chance by a farmer in the 1950s, this

and artefacts. Today, you can handle some of these
rare items in the visitor centre.

2. Midhowe Cairn, Rousay

Home to over 160 well-preserved monuments,
Rousay is known as the Egypt of the North. Take
the Westness Heritage Walk to see many examples,
including Midhowe Cairn the largest cairn in Orkney.

The Knap of Howar is the oldest standing stone-built

house in Western Europe. This Neolithic farmstead
was occupied from 3700BC, and much of the stone
furniture is still intact.

4. Dwarfie Stone, Hoy

According to one Orcadian fairytale, the Dwarfie
Stone was said to be the handiwork of a giant and his
wife. Inside are two rock-cut spaces that appear to
be half-sized beds, perhaps giving rise to the dwarf
folklore associated with this site.

Vikings, Rogues
and Royalty
The Norse Earldom dominated Orkneys culture
for hundreds of years from the late 700s AD to
the 11th century.
Much of this history revolves around St Magnus
Cathedral a splendid example of Norman
architecture, dating back to 1137. It was said the
relics of St Magnus were enshrined here when
the Cathedral was consecrated. Visitors can now
explore the upper areas of the Cathedral and the
tower on guided tours.
Today, you can also see the ruins of elaborate
palaces in Kirkwall and Birsay, built by the notorious

Robert Stewart and his son, Patrick. Robert was the

bastard half-brother of Mary Queen of Scots.
Still standing strong on Shapinsay, Balfour Castle
is a fine example of Baronial architecture, built in
1847. Balfour itself is a conservation village that will
take you back in time to life in the 18th century.
You can even stay in period properties on Orkney

Orkneys unique geography made it part
of history. At the heart of this was Scapa

both World Wars. It was here in 1918 that
the German High Seas Fleet was interned
after the Armistice, and then scuttled at
midsummer 1919. The Scapa Flow Visitor

brims with photos, videos, texts, artefacts

wartime history of Scapa Flow.

The Churchill Barriers

After HMS Royal Oak was sunk by a
U-boat in 1939, the Churchill Barriers were
built to block the eastern approaches to
Scapa Flow. These barriers link four islands
with a narrow causeway that skims the
water, creating Orkneys most spectacular
drive. Its a guaranteed brilliant moment,
so dont miss it.

Ness Battery, Stromness

Ness Battery was a crucial part of the
defences of the western approaches to
Scapa Flow in both wars. During WWII the
battery was armed with two 6-inch calibre
guns. It housed a Fire Command and
controlled all six batteries defending Hoy
Sound. Today the site is open for guided
tours and you can look round several of the
original wooden huts.

The Italian Chapel

La bella cappella Italiana

This pretty chapel was built by Italian prisoners of war who transformed
two Nissen huts into an elaborate place for worship. The Italian Chapel
draws visitors from across the globe. This year, the 70th anniversary of the
completion of the building, a special Mass was held when the Apostolic
Nuncio, His Excellency Archbishop Antonio Mennini read a message from
His Holiness Pope Francis in which His Holiness prays that the Chapel,
built in time of war, may continue to be a sign of peace and reconciliation
to all those persons who work for the God given dignity of each and every
human person.
The Chapel is also providing inspiration to filmmakers who want to tell the
story of two secret lovers a prisoner and a local woman who met after
the men were given a degree of freedom when Italy capitulated in 1943.

Orkney teems with life all year round. Its a

haven for animals and plants, with wonderful
rarities to discover and enjoy.
Nature surrounds you on Orkney.
Otters, hares and the Orkney vole thrive
here. Above you, the skies are full of
birds. Underfoot, its a wild garden,
blooming with flowers from spring to

as you walk. In the water, porpoise,
dolphins and whales quietly pass by,
while seals bask on the skerries.
Each season brings new highlights.
You only have to stroll along a cliff top
in summer to see thousands of breeding

seabirds. On summer evenings, make

sure you look up into the night sky.
You might just see the shimmer of
noctilucent clouds.

Take a walk along the beach and youll find
yourself following groups of oystercatchers

Summer

This is the time to see the teeming seabird cities on

Westray, Copinsay and at Marwick Head. Listen for
corncrakes night-time calls across the farmland.
On calm days, you may be lucky and see minke
whales, orcas and basking sharks. Youll definitely
see common seal mothers and their pups. And as
the great yellow bumblebees take to the air,
the rare Primula scotica comes into flower.

On the coast, you will find fulmars, black

guillemot, razorbill, kittiwake, peregrine,
great skua, gannet, shag, cormorant, eider
duck and waders.
You might be lucky enough to see a
perennial favourite, the puffin, from April
to July. The map (above) shows you prime
puffin-watching sites.
In autumn and winter, Orkney is a fantastic
place to see migrating and wintering birds.
Migrants include redwing, siskin, brambling,
pink-footed geese, greylag geese, waxwing
and snow bunting. Among wintering birds
are long-tailed duck, divers, shag, slavonian
grebe, whooper swan, thrushes, purple
sandpiper, turnstone, guillemots, ringed
plovers, arctic terns and scooters.

Autumn

Autumn is the time to see feathered rarities. As the

seas become wilder, it gets easier to spot unusual
birds such as sooty shearwater and storm petrels
which come to shelter close to shore. While youre
on the coast, look out for pupping grey seals, and
on calm days you may spot migrating whales,
porpoises and dolphins.

Winter

If you are lucky, the long dark winter nights are a

perfect backdrop for the magnificent spectacle that is
Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.
Orkney is welcoming in winter as the marine climate
makes frost and snow rare, so its an excellent place
to see wintering birds, such as long-tailed duck,
whooper swan and wader species.

If you love nature

Orkney has over 30 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
where you can find rare habitats and geological features.

Seal Watching

North Ronaldsay Sheep

Cliff Walking

Throughout the autumn you

can see common seals and their
pups basking in haul-out sites.
From October to December,
grey seals give birth and pups
spend about 21 days on land.
The map (opposite) shows you
the best seal-watching areas.
You can watch our seal cams
from September on:
www.sandayranger.org

As the name suggests, these

sheep are native to this island.
As a breed, they have changed
very little in 5,000 years, and
today there are about 3,700
roaming North Ronaldsay.
They feed on seaweed, making
the meat virtually fat-free and
very tender. Their wool is highly
sought after and often used in
local knitwear.

Breathtaking cliff walks are easy

to find in Orkney. Visit Hoy to see
the magnificent red sandstone
cliffs at 350m the tallest vertical
sea cliffs in the UK. Travel to Stronsay
to see a striking natural arch the
Vat of Kirbuster. Yesnaby and
Marwick Head are popular cliff
walks. Or wait for low tide to walk
across to the Brough of Birsay, an
uninhabited tidal island explore the
Brough and see the lighthouse.

Moments of Culture

Culture
MOMENTS OF

Orkney is a place rich in tradition. You can look forward to

music, art, shows and festivals, letting you share in hundreds
of years of custom and the unique culture of the islanders.

There are so many cultural attractions dotted

across the islands, youre spoiled for choice. But
a great place to start is the Orkney Museum in
Kirkwall. Open all year round, it guarantees you
a fascinating few hours, discovering the story of
Orkney from the Stone Age to present times.

If you prefer food for thought, dont miss the 25th

anniversary of the Science Festival in September
a week thats packed with thought-provoking talks
and events. Expect a kaleidoscopic mix that build
links between science and the humanities, from art
and music, to history and philosophy.

Summer brings the long-standing tradition of the

South Ronaldsay Boys Ploughing Match and the
Festival of the Horse. Girls are dressed as horses
and the ploughing contest takes place at the
Sand oWright beach. The outfits and the fierce
competition make this event fun to watch.

In Orkney, the year begins and ends with one

of the best-known local traditions The Ba. On
Christmas Day and New Years Day. The Uppies and
Doonies take on each other equally in a game of
street football in the heart of Kirkwall. Each team
can be over 100 men strong, and the Ba can last
for hours as the jostling crowd battles for ground.
There is even a boys version to watch. Its a
spectacle. Its a spectacle youll never forget.

Explore Orkneys Norse cultural links and

ecclesiastical connections by visiting the Bishops
and Earls palaces, which is open all year round.
Autumn brings the harvest and there is no
better time to savour local produce. So look out
for Harvest Home celebrations across the islands
and experience a feast once known as the
Muckle Supper.

These are just a few of Orkneys cultural highlights.

You will find an events calendar on page 37,
listing activities throughout the year. Also,

1. Festival of the Horse, primary school age

girls of South Ronaldsay put on a costume
based on the elaborate harness decoration
of Clydesdale horses.
2. At the Sands o Wright, the boys of South

even furrows.
3. Drummers of the Kirkwall City Pipe Band.
4. Riding of the Marches, horses ride into
Scapa Beach.
5. The Orkney International Science Festival,

ORKNEY BRILLIANT FOR

Immerse yourself in Orkneys vibrant music

and arts scene and enrich your cultural
experience of the islands.
You really get to feel the spirit of a
place when you hear the music, and
this is so true of Orkney. Musicians
play throughout the year at local
venues, but if you want to be sure of
hearing traditional melodies, come to
the Orkney Ceilidh Weekend in April
or the Folk Festival in May.

20

St Magnus International Festival

brings a joyful explosion of music,
theatre, performance and storytelling
to Orkney across six vibrant days
in June.

Art is everywhere, with dozens of

galleries open to the public, exhibiting
works old and new. The Pier Arts
Centre is a great place to start.

Every year, this world-class festival

brings international orchestras,
acclaimed soloists, theatre and dance
companies, poets, authors, bands
and visual artists to Orkney. There is
a packed schedule giving you several
performances to choose from every day.

Legends and folklore abound in

Orkney. To hear the ancient art of
storytelling at its best, visit at the
end of October when the storytelling
festival is on. You might even hear the
tale of Assipattle and discover how
Orkney was created.

You can expect interesting venues,

such as St Magnus Cathedral, the
Italian Chapel or even a parish hall.
In late September Stromness hosts
the Blues festival, where the town
comes alive with fiddles and
acoustic guitars.

The Wrigley Sisters

Briliant for Arts & Music

Jennifer and Hazel Wrigley are an internationally acclaimed

fiddle and guitar duo hailing from Orkney. They recorded their
first album in their teens and went on to tour the world, making
countless TV and radio appearances. In 2004, they set up The
Reel. It combines a music school with a cafe & bar, music shop,
venue and exhibition space. If youre lucky you might catch a
performance thats full of Orcadian wit and sparkle.

Brilliant for Innovations

BRILLIANT FOR INNOVATIONS

The moment you

see the future
Orcadians have a long tradition of harnessing the power of
nature to heat their homes and drive machinery. Today, Orkney
is a world-leading centre for renewable energy, and you can see
this ground-breaking technology in action.

The development and

innovation which has taken
place over the past decade
in the Orkney Islands is very
encouraging for the future.
Andreea Stracinescu, Head of Unit for New Energy
Technologies at the European Commission.

22

My #brilliantorkney...

This group of Researchers working on a collaborative project between

the University of Dundee and Pelamis Wave Power were about to
embark on their first trip to visit a Pelamis wave energy machine in real
life. Having worked with the Pelamis team on new designs for the wave
machines it was an exciting moment of anticipation waiting for the
ferry to take us over to Hoy.
Orkney is a world leader in renewable energy
and is pioneering the development of marine
renewables in the UK.
Orkney has been powering homes and businesses
through wind technology for decades. The worlds
first modern wind turbine was tested on Costa
Hill in the 1950s, and now there are over 470
wind turbines on the islands. Orkneys electricity
is amongst the greenest in the UK with the
islands often providing in excess of 100 per cent
of Orkneys electricity demand from renewables,
making it an energy exporter. Today, Orkney is
also leading the world in the development of
marine renewable energy, and is home to the
European Marine Energy Centre: the worlds first
and only real-sea facility for testing machines that
generate electricity from waves and tides. With
the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the west
coast, and the tides rushing between islands to
and from the North Sea, Orkney is the perfect
testing ground for marine energy converters.

Brilliant for Innovations

See renewable energy being generated

There are various sites around Orkney where
you can see these leading technologies being
developed and tested, including EMECs wave
test site at Billia Croo near Stromness, and the
tidal test site at the Fall of Warness off the
northern isle of Eday. When devices are not
being tested on site, you may spot them at one
of Orkneys marine renewables port facilities at
Hatston Pier in Kirkwall, Lyness Pier in Hoy,
and Coplands Dock in Stromness.
Protecting the islands
Every renewable energy project is undertaken
with careful consideration of the environment,
so that Orkneys heritage, beauty and ecology
are protected for future generations.

Wind

Wave

Tidal

Orkney is home to over 10% of

the UKs micro wind installations,
and you can see many farms and
dwellings with their own small
wind turbines which are helping
to secure a sustainable future for
islanders.

In 2004, Orkney waters powered

the first floating wave energy
device to generate electricity to
the national grid, and EMECs Billia
Croo wave test site remains home
to some of the most cutting-edge
technology in the world.

Orkney is at the forefront of tidal

power testing, and the latest
devices can often be spotted at
Hatston pier when they are not
being deployed.

Brilliant for the Taste buds

BRILLIANT FOR THE

Taste buds
With fertile land, sparkling lochs and clean seas, Orkney has all the raw
ingredients for high-quality food and drink. 2015 is the Year of Scotlands
Food and Drink. Where better to be than Orkney?

Better still, we have dedicated producers and

talented chefs whose combined skills turn Orkneys
harvest into award-winning, first-class cuisine.

Orkney is also home to award-winning whisky

distilleries, the UKs most northerly winery and
a number of charming real ales.

There are many specialities to be enjoyed in Orkney.

With lush grazing, its no surprise that premium
beef is produced here. Much of it is exported, but
youll find prime cuts in butchers shops and on
restaurant menus across the islands. Dont go home
without trying North Ronaldsay lamb. They feed
on seaweed, which gives the lean meat exceptional
flavour and tenderness.

If youre staying in a self-catering property, you

could serve dinner with clapshot made with locallygrown tatties (potatoes) and neeps (turnips) mashed
together, or pack a picnic using locally-produced
bread, cheese, butter and shortbread. Most hotels
pride themselves in serving local produce, freshly
prepared and of high quality.

Depending on the season, look out for spoots

(razor clams), whelks, cockles, lobster, crab and
hand-dived scallops.

Other traditional fare includes fattie cutties a

biscuit with currants, Orkney oatcakes, or Bere
Bannock, both wonderful with Orkney cheddar.

Similarly, you could savour fresh haddock, cod,

tusk, halibut, plaice, sole, monkfish or squid. Rarer
choices might include megrim, witch or ling.

Moments to Treasure

Moments
to treasure
Feast your eyes on Orkneys unique arts and crafts and
you catch a glimpse of the landscapes and seascapes that
continue to inspire our creative community.

1.

Orkney is rich in high-quality arts and crafts.

Expect to be wowed by the talents of our
painters, potters, furniture makers, jewellers,
textile artists and sculptors. The oldest traditions
are kept alive by local craftspeople, so you can
see traditional items like the brides cog being
made here today.
Artists also draw on Orkneys Neolithic history,
landscape and skies for inspiration.
Yet, within a stones throw, you will find artists
with contemporary vision. A great example is
wool craft. Wool from North Ronaldsay sheep
has kept Orcadians warm for centuries, and

now it is turned into colourful textile art as

well as cushions, scarves and jumpers.
Individual talents abound. Visit the studios of
Orkneys painters and you will see the islands
interpreted in dozens of different ways from
incredibly detailed realism to mesmerising
impressionism.
Whether its a traditional item you are looking
for, or something more contemporary, a visit to
www.orkneyartsandcrafts.com highlights details
of our exhibitions and sales throughout the year.
And if you want to take a little bit of Orkneys
magic home with you, youll be spoilt for choice.

Orkneys shops stock many stunning, locally-produced arts and crafts, as well as food
and drink, especially in the towns of Kirkwall and Stromness. Orkney jewellery, crafts
and pottery are especially prominent, and you are sure to pick up a striking reminder
of your visit.

ORKNEY

Best on Show

Best on
Show
Get up close to world-class livestock and
enjoy outdoor fun when Orkneys champions
take to the showground.
With a world-renowned agricultural
heritage dating back 5,000 years,
its no wonder that Orkney has a
thriving farming community and a
very successful industry. With crops
grown in fertile soil and livestock
fed on rich grass, Orkney produce is
famous across the UK, particularly
Orkney beef. In fact, Orkney has
the highest density of beef cattle in
Europe as well as being the biggest
dairy area north of Stirling.
You can see the very best of local
agriculture on show at Orkney
County Show in August. This is a
cornerstone of the farming calendar
and a show that counts among the
top events of its kind held across
the UK each summer.

36

Farmers come to parade their

livestock and to compete for a show
champion. Apart from cattle, sheep,
goats and poultry all compete for
awards. You will also find vintage
car rallies, show jumping and dog
trials, plus more than 90 trade stands
and food outlets, highlighting the
quality of local produce and crafts.
You know its a great day out as it
attracts more than 10,000 visitors
each year. Look out for the other
country shows that take place in
the week before the big one. If
you are visiting Orkney in August,
these shows are a must-see for all
the family.
