Unit 2

Vocabulary

Unit 2

Grammar 2
Know your partner.

Write the right number.

Use this activity after Lesson 2.3 Ex. 9b on page 25.

Use this activity after Lesson 2.2 Ex. 6 page 23.

Procedure

Procedure

Ss work in pairs. Give each pair a Student 1 and Student 2

paper. They should not show these to each other.

Ss work in pairs. Give each student a copy of the activity.

Tell them to read the numbers to their partner, who writes

down the numbers that they hear. Sometimes these
numbers are telephone numbers and sometimes they are
times (shown by the symbols). Monitor the pairs to make
sure they are not showing their papers to each other.
When they have read, listened to and written down all the
numbers, they compare the numbers they have written
with the numbers that were read to them. If they are all
correct, and they are the first pair to finish, then they are
the winner.
Unit 2

Tell them to look at the pictures and accompanying text.

The pictures illustrate the verbs and other words in the
text, but you could go through these with Ss, checking
how the words are pronounced, and making sure they
understand what the words mean.
Ask them to think about their partner. Which of the skills
and abilities on their paper do they think their partner
has? For each picture, they circle yes or no.
When they have chosen all their answers, they go through
each picture, saying either You can ... or You cant ... For
each one, their partner answers. Thats true, I can/I cant
... or Thats false, I can/ I cant

Grammar 1
Negative matching

Use this activity after Lesson 2.1 Ex. 4b on page 20.

Unit 2

Grammar 3
Phone dictations

Procedure

Use this activity after Lesson 2.3 Ex. 3b on page 24.

Before you do this activity, you might need to pre-teach

the meaning of so.

Procedure

Ss work in small groups of four. Give each group a copy of

the cards. They spread these on the desk in front of them
so that they can see all of the cards.

Ss work in groups of four. Divide each group

into pairs. Give each pair a Students 1 and 2, or
Students 3 and 4 paper. They should not show these to
the other pair.

Ask them to read all of the cards, and check the meanings
of any words they dont know (either by asking one
another, by asking you, or by looking in a dictionary).
Tell them to turn all the cards over so that they are face
down. Give them a copy of the B sentences 120.
Explain that sentences 120 are the first part of a
sentence, and the cards are the second part. Students
take it in turns to choose a sentence from 120, and try
to remember where the second part of the sentence is.
They turn over the card that they think is the correct
second part. If they are correct, they write their name
next to the first part of the sentence. The card is then
replaced face down.
Play the game for about ten minutes then review their
answers. The winner is the student who made the most
correct matches in that time.
Answers
The cards and the sentences are in the same order on the
activity.

Ss 1 and 2 read their phone conversation in the box to

Ss 3 and 4. Ss 3 and 4 listen. Ss 3 and 4 then read their
conversation to Ss 1 and 2, who listen.
Ss unfold their papers for the second time they read the
conversations. Ss 1 and 2 then read their conversation
two more times. This time, Ss 3 and 4 write down what
they hear on the gapped text under their conversation.
They then read their conversation two more times, while
Ss 1 and 2 write down what they hear.
The first group in the class to complete both conversation
dictations successfully is the winner.

Unit 2

Communication
The ideal job for you!

Use this activity after Communication 3 Ex. 3b on

page 26.
Procedure
Ss work in pairs. Give each student a copy of the activity.
Tell them to read through the questions and use a

dictionary or ask you for the meanings of any words

that they dont understand (alternatively, you could preteach and/or concept-check some of the more difficult or
unusual vocabulary).
Tell Ss to ask each other the questions on the paper,
ticking () any that are true for their partner. Allow them
about 510 minutes for this.
Ask Ss to find a new partner. With the new partner, they
look at the qualities, skills, etc., that they ticked, and try
to choose a job for their original partner.
When they have done this, they return to their original
partner and tell them what they decided. Their partner
can then say whether or not they would like the job that
has been chosen for them.
