Unit 9

Vocabulary
Find the hidden expression.

Use this activity after Lesson 9.3 Ex. 8 on page 109.

Procedure
Ss work in pairs. Give each pair a copy of the activity.
Explain that each sentence can be completed with a word
from Unit 9 Lesson 3 (but they cannot look at their books
while they are doing this). Working together, they decide
what these words are, then write them in the grids.
If they do this correctly, they will reveal a two-word
expression in the shaded vertical strips.

8 Mrs Clark is the only person who can use the fax

Use this activity after Lesson 9.1 Ex. 6 on page 105.

Procedure
Ss work in pairs. Give each pair a copy of the activity.
Explain that twelve sentences have been split into three
parts and they must join all three parts together. The
sentences are rules and other information for somebody
starting a new job in a company.
The first pair to do this correctly is the winner.
Answers
1 Work begins at 8.30 everyday, so you have to be here
on time every morning.

Tell Ss that they are going to ask and answer questions

on their paper. Student 1 begins by asking the first
question on his/her paper (Which do you prefer, Chinese
food or Indian food?). Student 2 looks for the answer on
his/her paper and answers Student 1s question. He/she
then asks the question that follows that answer. Student
1 then looks for the answer on his/her paper.
This is repeated until they have asked and answered all
the questions. The first pair to match the questions and
answers is the winner.
Answers
The questions and answers follow this sequence:

Pearson Education Limited 2007, Living English A2

Teachers notes Photocopiable Worksheets

Im a very busy person. This Saturday is a good

example. I have a lot to do, so Im getting up
early, at 6 oclock. Im having breakfast and then
Im going to the supermarket. I like getting there
early, because its much quieter than it is later in
the day. At nine oclock Im meeting my friend Jo
at the sports centre, and were playing tennis. We
always do this on Saturday. After that, Im taking
the bus home and making some sandwiches and a
salad, because at twelve oclock Im having a picnic
lunch with my boyfriend Rob in the park. Then
were doing some shopping in town because I want
a new dress and Rob needs a new jacket. After
that were seeing a new film at the cinema. In the
evening were having a drink in a local bar with
my brother Mick and his wife, and then were all
eating at a new Italian restaurant near my house.

Tell Ss to turn their cards over and put the pictures in the
correct order.
When all the groups have done this, give them a copy of
Part 2. Using their cards as prompts, they fill in the gaps
with appropriate words.

Unit 9

Communication
Making excuses

Use this activity after Communication 9 Ex.3b on

page 110.
Procedure
Ss work in pairs. Give each student in each pair a Student
1 or Student 2 paper. They do not show these to each
other.
Explain that Student 1 wants to go out with Student 2, but
Student 2 doesnt want to go out with him/her. Student 1
uses the prompts in the grid (e.g., Would you like to go to
the cinema with me on Monday?) and Student 2 uses his/
her pictures to give a reason why he/she cant go, using
the Present Continuous (e.g., Im sorry, but Im washing
my hair). Student 1 listens, and writes the days of the
week under each appropriate picture.
When they finish, they compare their papers. The days of
the week on Student 1s pictures should be the same as
the days of the week on Student 2s pictures.
Answers
Here are some possible questions and responses that Ss
could use:
Would you like to come to the cinema with me on Monday
night? Im afraid Im washing my hair.
How about a meal with me on Tuesday? Thanks for
asking, but Im doing my homework.
Pearson Education Limited 2007, Living English A2

Lets go shopping on Wednesday evening. Im afraid not.

Im going swimming.
Why dont we go to a nightclub on Thursday night? Sorry,
but Im watching a video with my friends.
What about a drink on Friday night? Im afraid thats not
possible. Im cooking dinner for my friends.
Would you like to go for a walk on Saturday? That sounds
nice, but my mothers coming to see me.
Lets play tennis on Sunday. Id love to, but Im already
playing volleyball.
