WORKSHOP

2: HEALTH PROMOTION PLANNING FRAMEWORKS

This week we ask you to consider health promotion frameworks and how they relate to our practice.
Sometimes it is better to take small steps and achieve great outcomes than trying to achieve too
much. In your workshop groups you will begin the planning process. You need to develop a project
plan according to the frameworks presented in the lecture, for example the Integrated Health
Promotion Framework, or Environments for Health.
Your facilitator will spend time discussing the importance of planning and project management and
provide examples from their practice.

ACTIVITIES
PART 1: MENTORS AND PAST STUDENT GUEST SPEAKERS
Mentors will be visiting workshop groups to discuss where they might be able to help you and tell you
about their ideas of possible projects around the campus.
Past CHP students will visit the workshop to share their experiences with you.

PART 2: LECTURE AND READINGS REVIEW

There are a number of essential readings to be complete this week. Each group will present a 5
minute summary of what they have learnt from one of the readings, the video or the lecture. Your
facilitator will nominate which group will present which information. Resources you will need to
prepare notes for:

Lecture material
Fair foundations VicHealth video
Integrated Health Promotion Framework (Section 3)
Strategic framework for the Health Promoting Universities project (pp121-137)
Environments for health (pp.6-17)
Ottawa Charter (from Week 1 reading)

Complete the readings, watch the lecture and video and prepare notes for a summary presentation.
You may wish to do this in your groups or individually and then share with each other.

PART 3: THINKING OUTSIDE THE SQUARE

To prepare you for your health promotion project and to encourage you to think small and think
outside of the square each group will read information about, or watch a video from a range of
examples provided by your facilitator. Consider the questions below and be prepared to report back
on these to the whole group.
For this activity you will need to consider the elements of the activity and:

How it applies to the Ottawa Charter

Where the activity does fits into the health promotion continuum?
What is the message?
Who is the population the message is aimed?

PART 4PLANNING A HEALTH PROMOTION ACTIVITY

Good health promotion practice takes planning. In this weeks lecture we introduced you to health
promotion planning frameworks. Discuss these frameworks in your groups and consider which might
be the most appropriate for your project. You will apply this new knowledge to your projects and
demonstrate an understanding of the application of the skills through the group report due on
th
Monday 7 September.

In your small groups, you need to identify an idea for a health promotion project to plan, implement
and evaluate throughout the semester. You will also need to consider the identified health
promotion activity in relation to the continuum and the Ottawa Charter. Depending on your campus
arrangements you may be able to choose from a list of allocated projects.
The topic your group chooses will be the basis of the individual essay due on 2/11/15
Prior to the workshop, after completing the readings, think about what your project might focus on,
and which planning framework would suit your project.
