16. An electron is suspended between two parallel capacitor plates as shown below.

A potential difference of 200 V is placed between the plates and the force on the electron due
to the electric field produced exactly balances out the force due to gravity on the electron.
(a) On the diagram above draw in the electric field between the plates, ignore edge effects.[1]
(b) Which plate (top or bottom) must be the positive plate? [1]
(c) If the plates are measured to be 2 cm apart find the strength of the E-field between the

18. A car (A) is coming towards a crossroads going due East at 30 ms-1. At the same time
another (B) car travelling due South at 20 ms-1 also approaches the intersection.

(a) Draw a diagram of the intersection (with roads going North, South, East, and West) and
the cars themselves. Mark all relevant information on the diagram. Mark the two cars A and B
respectively. [2]
(b) Using the diagram above, or otherwise, calculate the magnitude and direction of the
velocity of car A with respect to a passenger in car B. [4]

19. This question refers to the description written by a student about the motion of an object.
The description is given below.
"The object began 2m in front of me and travelled at 2 ms-1 for the next 3 seconds, away
from me. It then stopped for 5 seconds, and finally came towards me reaching me in a
further 10 seconds.
(a) Draw a displacement vs. time graph to describe the motion including all headings. [3]
(b) State one time period when the object was undergoing constant velocity. [1]

(b) Describe how information is carried on ONE of the waves which form the electromagnetic

(c) Describe ONE factor that places a limit on the distance that electromagnetic waves can
carry information and how it effects this wave. [2]

(c) Using the concepts of energy, calculate the final velocity of a 4 Kg brick (just before it

23. A car of mass 800 Kg is moving at a constant speed of 15 ms-l around a circular track.
The track is banked at an angle of 20 as shown.

(a) Make a sketch of the car below and show the forces acting on it as it moves.[2]
(b) Calculate the weight of the car. [1]
