Q1 A single-phase transformer has 1000 turns on the primary and 200 turns on the secondary.
The no load current is 3A at a power factor 0.2 lagging when secondary current is 280A at
a power factor of 0.8 lagging. Calculate the primary current and the power factor. Assume
the voltage drop in the windings to be negligible
Q2 100kVA transformer has 400 turns on the primary and 800 turns on the secondary. The
primary and secondary resistances are 0.3W and 0.01W respectively, and the corresponding
leakage reactances are 1.1W and 0.035W respectively. The supply voltage is 2200V.
Calculate:
(a) The equivalent impedance referred to the primary circuit;
(b) The voltage regulation and the secondary terminal voltage for full load having a power
factor of (i) 0.8 lagging and (ii) 0.8 leading.
(c) The percentage resistance and leakage reactance drops of the transformer

Q3 A 250 kVA,11000V/400V, 50Hz single phase transformer has 80 turns on the secondary.
Calculate
(a) The appropriate values of the primary and secondary currents;
(b) The approximate number of primary turns;
(c) the maximum value of the flux.
Q4(a) Explain the working principle of DC generator. Also explain commutator action.
(b) Explain parallel operation of transformers.

Q5 (a) Explain the different methods of speed control of DC shunt and series motor.
Q6 Draw and explain the construction of a dc generator. Mention the material used and functions

Q7 A 230V, shunt excited DC motor has RA =0.05 and Rf =75 . The motor draws a line
current, IL, of 7 A when lightly loaded and turning at 1120 RPM. With the machine loaded such
that the line current is 46 A, answer the following. Assume the iron is linear (i.e. no saturation in

EA vs. If curve)
(a) Find speed in RPM
(b)Find induced torque
(c) Suppose the field current is increased to 100, find the speed if the line current
stays at 46 A
(d) If the machine experiences armature reaction, how would this impact the torque speed
characteristic? Explain and sketch an approximate characteristic.
Q8 What is armature reaction? How does it impact the output of a dc generator?

Q9 The open circuit characteristic for a 6 pole dc generator rated at 500 V and 500 kW is given
below. The characteristic was measured at a speed of 1000 RPM. RA=0.02 (counting brush
drop).

(a) Calculate the shunt resistance (RF + Radj) required to produce rated terminal voltage when
the machine is unloaded.
Using the shunt resistance calculated in part A, calculate the terminal voltage when the
(b) armature current is 1000A and the speed is 1000 RPM (ignore armature reaction).
Q10 Draw a developed lap winding diagram of DC machine with 32 conductors and 4
poles. The winding is single layer and simplex

The machine is now connected as a shunt generator with a total field resistance of 200
and driven at 1000 rpm. Estimate graphically: (i) the voltage to which the generator will
build up at no load. (ii) the armature, field and load currents when the terminal voltage is
found to be 150 V. Neglect the effect of armature reaction and brush drop and assume
armature resistance ra to be 0.8 . (iii) Finally estimate the steady state armature current
when the machine terminals are shorted.
