SECTION 1
NOTES FOR THE TEACHER
Purpose of the document
This document aims to enhance the use of the CAPS and workbooks in the teaching,
learning and assessment of Mathematics and English FAL in the Intermediate Phase. The
document in no way prescribes how teaching should be carried out, but suggests pacing
that would ensure curriculum coverage.
Section 1 (Mathematics) comprises of:
year plans with topics for Grades 4 6 taken from CAPS as is,
recording sheets for work done and completed,
workbook activities aligned to CAPS topic,
table of contents for each Workbook.
The year plans suggests topics that should be covered on particular days. Time is
allocated more or less as recommended in the CAPS. Year plans are developed such that
a teacher has six hours per week for teaching and learning of mathematics. The six hours
include ten minutes time for mental activities. Astericks in the year plans indicate a
double period. However, your school timetable may deviate from the plan, as the day for
a double period may be different from school to school. Page numbers in the CAPS for
each topic and assessment are indicated. This will assist you to see clarification of content
for each topic or assessment task.
Formal assessment is aligned to Assessment Programmes. Informal assessment reflected
in the year plans is the minimum, as recommended by CAPS. Teachers are thus expected
to go beyond the number of suggested informal assessments.
Workbooks
A general observation is that teachers encounter challenges with the use of workbooks.
The document thus suggests activities in the workbook that could be done for each topic.
The teacher should decide whether the activities should be used for teaching or they
should be used for consolidation of work done. In some activities, learners may do
selected questions. Activities not done during learning and teaching may be used for
revision.
It is highly recommended that work done in the workbooks should indicate dates on
which it was done. There should also be evidence that the teacher concerned monitors the
use of workbooks.
