SWELTERING DAYS
ARENT OVER YET

Cassandra Vitale, 29, died in July

as a victim of heroin overdose
ANDREW FORD @ANDREWFORDNEWS
BRICK After her death, Cassandra Vitales loved
ones gathered on a summer afternoon at Windward
Beach Park, a place she spent time with her niece.
Neighbors, friends, and relatives celebrated Cassandras life at a memorial Monday. She was known for
helping Sandy victims by founding the Bucket Brigade,
which evolved from distributing cleaning supplies to
working with other groups to clean and help restore
damaged homes.
Cassandra overdosed on heroin July 31, six days after her 29th birthday.
She wanted to put her feet in, but thats not how you
do it with heroin, said her brother, J.R. Vitale, 36. She
wanted to taste the water, not swim in it, you know?
The attendees chatted; some laughed; some smoked
cigarettes; some watched boats cruise down the Metedeconk River; some drank Budweiser or box wine or perused a buffet: baked ziti, enchiladas, cupcakes, pineapple upside-down cake.
Some paused to look at a collage of Cassandras life:
photos of her with a stuffed bear or Mickey Mouse or
Barney. Cassandra on skis, or near a beach, or wearing
big sunglasses and striking a pose.
Cassandra and J.R. grew up in Beachwood, J.R. said.
Their father was in the Merchant Marine, and they
were raised on the water, scuba diving and fishing.

TINTON FALLS Alcohol, grief and the Internet its
the perfect recipe for a social media blunder.
Matt Reardon learned that the hard way while surfing the Web on the anniversary of his fathers death. He
said he was drinking tequila when he wrote an inflammatory Facebook comment about police brutality.
His post: Dont wanna get clipped while sitting in
your squad car?? Dont be a (expletives deleted) pig

their way to (expletive deleted) with other people
should get executed in cold blood.
Sure enough, it unleashed the fire of online lynch
mobs.
But it also landed the 29-year-old township man in
jail for a week in late December on assault and disorderly conduct charges charges based on language
that an assignment judge later called too trivial to
count as a threat.
He mentions nothing about the Tinton Falls Police
Department. He doesnt mention anything about any

The heat will ease, but the humidity will hang on.
Thats the bottom line of this weeks weather outlook,
which may also feature some heavy rain and flooding,
according to forecasters.
Today wont be as hot as Monday, when temperatures hit the mid-90s inland and approached daily records, said Lance Franck, a meteorologist in the National
Weather Services Mount Holly office. But with plenty
of moisture in the air, it will still be uncomfortable.
Away from the coast, (today) will be ... our last
chance of hitting 90, at least in the foreseeable future,
over the next five days, Franck said Monday.
Yet the humidity will continue at least through Friday, he said. There may be a respite on the weekend
as we see a cold front move through the region, most
likely late Friday, early Saturday morning. But were
still early in the week, so that (timing) is subject to
change.
Todays ongoing hot and humid weather comes amid
another dry spell in much of New Jersey, which was extremely dry in May the third-driest May on record,
according to state climatologist David A. Robinson.
Soaking rains in June the fourth-wettest on record
erased drought concerns for the time being. Meanwhile, a tropical cyclone may form soon in the eastern
