What is Pulmonary Hypertension ?

Pulmonary Hypertension in children is


caused

when

the

blood

pressure

increases beyond a limit.

This is due to the resistance or pressure


developed in the heart due to the flow of
blood from the right side.

Causes :

It can be caused without any reasons.

It is caused because of some in born


heart diseases.

Caused due to unrepaired condition of


the left portion of heart.

Some of the lung disorders effects the


flexibility of muscles of the blood
vessels in the lungs which may leads to
pulmonary hypertension.

It can be caused due to sickle cell disease


or due to connective tissue.

Symptoms :

Difficulty in breathing.

Fast breathing which is known as


tachypnea.

Very fast heart beat, this condition is


termed as tachycardia.

Changing of skin color to blue even


though the baby is getting oxygen.

Diagnosis :
There is a series of test for diagnosing
pulmonary hypertension in children

For diagnosing heart enlargement and


lung diseases Chest X-ray.

To know the babies circulating blood


flow ultrasound of the heart is taken
Echocardiogram.

To check whether there is bleeding in the


brain Head Ultrasound.

For monitoring the oxygen levels in the


blood Pulse Oximetry Monitoring.

Treatment :
The treatment for pulmonary hypertension
includes

Pharmacotherapy

Medical therapy

Pharmocotherapy :

This treatment is carried out by


inhaling nitric oxide and other drugs
like phosthodiesterase inhibitors,
prostacyclin, endothelin receptor etc..

Medical Therapy :
Steps include

Inotropic Suppot : To regulate the


contractions of muscles in the blood
vessels.

Surfactant Administration : For newborns


which have defects in the air sacs of the
lungs.

High frequency ventilation : For newborn


with low lung volumes.

Oxygenation through ECMO : If optimal


ventilatory support is failed.

Mechanical Ventilation & Endotracheal


Intubation : For avoiding over expansion.

Ph of the blood is regulated.

Paralytic agents : Instead of sedatives this


is used.

Hearing Evaluation.

Neurological evaluation is done by an


expert after treatment.
