Feminism

By Maddie Vanech
Hi Camp! Im not technically in Daily Double(I just exist with them in 3rd period). But when I
heard about the theme, feminism, for this issue, I
just wanted to put a quick disclaimer out for anyone
who may be confused. Feminism doesnt mean
that you hat men/anyone who doesnt identify as
female! It simply means you support equal rights
for all genders! For that reason, Im a feminist and
Im proud to say it! (If youre curious about this I
suggest doing some research and definitely check
out Emma Watsons speech at He for She.)

Volume 46, Issue 12B

Theme Issue:
Feminism and Gender Equality
Feminism is Important
By Katie Predella
Feminism is very important in todays society,
but you may wonder what it means. Im here
to tell you. Feminism means fighting for
womens equal rights. It DOES NOT mean
that you hate men. You might think that
women have the same rights as men. This
is somewhat true legally, but its not true
socially. First of all, women dont get the
same payment as men. I dont agree with this.
Honestly, a woman can do just as good (if not
better) of a job as a man can. I dont see why
people would think otherwise. Another point
to bring up is that women arent treated the
same as men in terms of what people say to
them, and how much people respect them.
Why did society decide that women werent
equal to men? Really, were all humans. Just
because someone is a woman, doesnt mean
that they arent as strong, smart, or kind as a
man. Those are just a few of the reasons Im
all for feminism, but there are so many more.
I encourage everyone to find out more about
feminism and support it.

Womens Soccer
By Katherine Lambert
Womens soccer managers recently did something
so sexist I just had to write about it. They tried to
make the womens soccer players wear shorter
shorts, do their hair up fancy and put on excessive
make up. Now the women are getting more
beautiful, putting on make-up. They go in the field
in an elegant manner, Cunha (Brazil womens
soccer manager) recently said in an interview from
Montreal, as reported by The Globe and Mails
Stephanie Nolen. Womens football used to copy
mens football. Even the jersey model, it was more
masculine. We used to dress the girls as boys. So
the team lacked a spirit of elegance, femininity.
Now the shorts are a bit shorter, the hair styles
are more done up. Its not a woman dressed as a
man.* Well, excuse me! I thought soccer was
about playing soccer. Apparently I was very much
mistaken. Soccer is about (for women, at least)
looking pretty. Yeah, right.
Sepp Blatter, the president of the world
governing body Fifa, said women should have
skimpier kit to increase the popularity of the game.
Let the women play in more feminine clothes like
they do in volleyball, he said.** Excuse while I
go and puke. (A) Norwegian footballer (soccer
player), Solveig Gulbrandsen, said: If I wanted
to wear a bikini I would have chosen to play beach
volleyball.** You said it! Im glad to know
somebodys standing up for them.

How simple things like girls and boys toy sections are
affecting young minds
By Eleanor Dunne
Girl and Boy toy sections. Seems simple, right?
Wrong. Simple things like girl and boy toy sections can
effect how young people see the world. When a little girl
comes running up to you saying I like princesses! Boys
cant like princesses, girls cant like Superheroes! you
think Oh, shes too young to know better. Shell learn
when shes older.
But the thing is, if we dont teach, they dont learn.
Kids learn from an early age that girls are helpless, they
arent as good as boys. Boys cant like pink or dolls, and
girls cant like blue and superheroes. Things like toy sections
labeled girls and boys help enforce that. The Legos
and superheroes in the boys, dolls and princessess in the
girls. I didnt realize that girls are just as good as boys until
my mom forced me to read Harry Potter and watch Star
Wars. (Thank you, Hermione and Princess Leia!) Phrases
like run like a girl or a girl beat you can also imply
that girls are weak and helpless. Even things like Disney
movies can tell kids that girls cant rescue themselves! For
example: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid,
Snow White, Aladdin, and 101 Dalmations. Disney made
a start with Frozen, Brave, Tangled, and Big Hero 6, but
they ruined Brave by giving a new image to Merida for the
merch. Not to mention Big Hero 6. The movie was great,
but they left Gogo and Honey Lemon off almost all the
merch!
Marvel is doing an okay job with their characters
(better than DC), but some of the characters in the comics
are a bit *cough cough.* The movies show that Black
Widow is a strong female character, but it discourages
girls because THERE STILL ISNT A BLACK WIDOW
MOVIE. CMON MARVEL! Not to mention Barbie. Barbie
is super sexist! Sure, its trying to tell girls that they can do
anything, but other things say otherwise. For example, the
Barbie I can be a computer engineer! book was so sexist,
they took it off of Amazon.
I think we could decrease the sexism in children by
getting rid of the girl and boy toy section and combining
them into just toys. Target is doing that (yay!) but itll take
a couple months. Hopefully, Target will be an example to
other buisnesses and theyll do the same. People could also
get a mix of pink and blue for their baby, no matter whether
its a girl or boy. Lastly, we get rid of phrases like run like
a girl or girl color or thats a girl thing and encourage
girls to do what they like, whether its watching Star Wars
or playing with dolls.

Top 10 strong women in Marvel

By Eleanor Dunne
10. Hawkeye/Kate Bishop
9. She-Hulk/Jennifer Walters
8. Storm/Ororo Munroe
7. Ms. Marvel/Khamala Kahn
6. Black Cat/Felicia Hardy
5. Spider-Woman/Jessica Drew
4. Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers
3. Shikla (Deadpools wife)
2. Thor/Jane Foster
1. Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff
Of couse, thats just the tip of the iceberg.
There are a TON of cool females in Marvel.
One series I suggest is A-Force, which is an
all-female Avengers team. There are a ton of
people I left out in this list, like Mockingbird,
America, Medusa, Scarlet Witch, Jean Grey,
Gamora, Peggy Carter, Wasp, Invisible
Woman, Valkyrie, Dazzler, and SO MANY
more! Go check them all out!

Feminism
Bye Mr. Ask
Ok so, one of the themes in Daily Double is
feminism, AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT
THAT IS! If you know what it is, put the
definition in the in the Ask for Ask pocket
OH! I forgot to tell you that Mr. Ask [me]
is actually a blood sucking alien, but due to
to the no sacrifice rule, I am forced to live off
food and water. This is what I look like: *big
fat fluffy kitten picture*. Until next time...

Girls Who Code, AKA Why Women Should Use The

Computer
By Livvy Segall
If you picture a computer scientist, you might picture
a man in a cubicle, working long hours. We hope, sometime,
females can overpower the many males in computer science. At
Google, 70% of employees are male and only 30% are female.
Many girls dont think they can do this, like boys can only do
computer science. Thats NOT true! Girls can do as much as
boys in programming (and everything else, for that matter), the
only reason some girls dont think so is because they thought
it wasnt accepted. Theres a club, called Girls Who Code,
that teaches girls how to code and about computer science in
general. I participated last year, and it was amazing. We got to
tour Google, make apps, and of course, code! We made fun and
useful things on Scratch and Javascript and submitted them to
National Girls Who Code.
Girls today can definitely code! If you dont know how,
you can learn! There are many ways and its helpful because you
can make stuff that dont exist yet, and let people see your great
work. Many girls work with computers, either as a job or just at
home, and you should too!
Feminism!
By Tillie Slosser
Hey people! The topic for this feminism (see title for questions)
This is going to be wierd, but I will answer idea box ideas, but
some how incorporating feminism into it. Here goes (and yes I
know this is a knockoff of James Welts articles, but I dont think
he will mind.)
1. Top 10 fav video games.
I dont play video games very much. But counter to old
knowledge us gals dont just do housework all day. I like papas
cupcakearia
2. Write about if you dyed your hair.
No. Just no. Not saying they meant this this way, but the whole
Im a girl so I must be skinny and have perfect hair and all that
(plug your ears children) #$@% (I didnt meant a super bad
word, dont worry) If I were fat, I would be proud.
3. Review a dictonary
K people. Not as well known but to all you peeps who think
this, girls dont have an infinite amount of time on their hands.
Anyway, this sounds boring and I would never do it.
Byeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Emma Watson
By Katherine Lambert
Emma Watson is the greatest actress
of all time. She was, in case you dont know,
Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter
movie series. Not only does she play an
AMAZING character, she is an AMAZING
person in real life. She is part of the He for
She organization, which promotes gender
equality. Maybe you saw her speech on
YouTube, which was also AMAZING.
Unfortunately, also on YouTube, there is
also a video titled Emma Watson Speech
REBUTTAL. How someone who is dumb
enough to say something like that has the
intelligence to make a YouTube video, I
dont know. I guess you can find instructions
for anything on the internet these days.
Unfortunately, it doesnt end there.
In Hollywood, Emma Watson and other
female actors arent being paid as much
as male actors. According to a survey this
year, for every dollar men are paid, women
are paid 78 cents overall! Mothers are paid
even less than that. Republicans blocked the
Paycheck Fairness Act, which is a bill that
basically would have made it completely
illegal to pay female actors less than male
actors. What is really surprising about that
is all of the Republicans who were there
voted against it, even the three women. The
top Republican in Senate claims the attempt
at the bill was not actually supposed to do
something aout he problem, but instead to
win female votes for Democrats. What the
heck! There are better ways to do that!
Conservatives say that no such inequality
exists. They say the pay gap is a result of
womens life choices.
After Emma Watsons previously
mentioned speech, some people who
apparently are against gender equality
threatened the release of fake, insulting
photos of her.
What is their problem with gender
equality? It just means the two genders
being given given equal rights. Is that really
so bad? The answer is NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feminism Discrimination Stories

Reasons why I would die in the Hunger Games

By James Welt

Okay, so I have started a column! It is not an

advice column though, so dont ask me for advice
because I am not good at helping people. It is a
column where you give me stories about feminism
or discrimination against women so I can publish
them in the Daily Double. I have three things
today (YAAAAAAAAY!) and here they are:

Hello everyone and may the odds be ever in your favor!

Today I will be giving reasons why I would die in the
Hunger Games! Lets begin.

1) Yesterday I was in Game On and we were

playing a game and this boy said , Im in charge
because Im the oldest boy, but I was the oldest.
From, Annoyed Girl
My comment: You should have been in charge.
2) A few months ago I was playing with the boys
on my block and they said You cant play with us,
youre a girl, so I started my own club for girls.
My comment: Yay you! That was totally awesome.
3) Can you tell us a personal story about when
youve faced discrimination, if you have?
My comment: Yes I can! One time at my school,
a boy said he knew I would be terrible at Clash of
Clans because I was a girl. So unfair!
Thats it for today! Thank you for reading!

Project MC2
By Francesca Lodovico
Project MC2 is a cool new Netflix show. It
highlights how smart girls can be. As USNews.
com writer Lynn Elber states, Yes, its true.
Women do run the world, the head of a femalesonly spy agency tells four schoolgirl recruits in
Project MC2 Netflixs new series for tweens. As
if.
But spinning reality isnt the shows intent.
Instead, it seeks to encourage girls to do the math
and realize they are capable of succeeding in the
male-dominated fields of science and technology.
And this is true! So please check out this series.

1. The cornocoupia
While everyone else would be getting useful supplies I
would be running away from everyone else. The kids in
the hunger games are very intense and scary. I wanna get
out of there A.S.A.P.
2. Lack of food and water
First of all the water supplies are proaboubly blocked
and the other tributes are proboubly waiting for me there.
I wont risk that! Also if I killed a rabbit to eat I would
feel bad about it for a very long time.
3. Lack of social skills
Im not very charasmatic or friendly so I would get no
support from the capital. I would be to intimidated to
attempt at making an alliance.
4. I would just suck
I dont have any useful hunger games skills. I cant hide
or kill or set up traps. I would die right away.
Thats it for now thanks for reading! Peace out
-James

Ten Weird Fruits to Try

By Lani W.

Hello! I have SO MANY questions. Ron

walked into my room today and gawked when
he saw the pile of questions I have hidden in my
bed sheets. (Dumbledore does not approve of
advice columns for anyone who is a Muggle).
So, Im going to answer 3 questions out of the
pile again!

Info from Hotelclub.com

This weird website chose to say number one first rather
than ten so I will write it ten to one. Also, the fruit was not
as weird as I thought, but since I cant write anything else
I will just do this.
10. African Cucumber:
Its yellow, spiky and it looks like an oversized
pufferfish. With a green iguana-color flesh, it also tastes like
bananas, pashion fruit, cucumber, and limes combinded. It
is normally used to decorate food, but it also is used to
make smoothies and sundaes.
9. Dragon Fruit:
One of the not-so weird ones, this fruit is the fruit
of many cactus species. Juice and wine can be made from
its flesh and the flowers it grows can make tea. I have eaten
this fruit before ( I did not like it so much) and, personally,
if you dont have dice around, use the dragon fruits flesh
in cubes.
8. Durian:
Another not-so-weird-one, this fruit is called the
King of Fruits in Southeast Asia. Im not sure if the durian
is called this because people like the taste or because it has
a smell identical to a sewer (because of that, the fruit is
banned in hotels and transportation).
7. Kumquats:
The fruit is used in marmalade, jelly, and alcoholic
drinks. It is also used in some teas and is also boiled for the
use of a remedy for sore throats. It either looks like this or
it looks like a giant, orange cough drop.
6. Mangosteen:
(Heard of it somewhere else..) although it helps
lower the risk of some diseases like cancer, its seedpodlooking thing looks a lot like garlic when it is in the fruit
(my personal opinion)
5. Star fruit:
If you like pineapples, apples and kiwis, star fruit
might be a good try for you. Also, it only looks like a star
from its sides.
4. Lychee:
I have not eaten one in a while, but its skin looks
like one of those nature-made spikeballs found outside, on
the ground.
3. Passion Fruit:
A fruit with a pumpkin gut-looking pulp.
2. Jackfruit:
This fruit looks just like the durian, just green. It
tastes just like pineapple, and you can get it canned or as
sweet chips.
1. Rambutan:

Its sweet and it looks like an egg.

First Question:
Dear Hairy Potter,
POP. CORN. #Popcornislife.
From, Paris girl.
My Answer:
Well, Paris Girl, I agree. At Hogwarts, we get
bacon flavored popcorn. SCRUMPTIOUS!
P. S. Thats not how you spell my name.
Second Question:
Dear Harry POter,
I am Drako youer still frens w!th that mudblood.
WOW! Lol #Imnotahater
My answer:
Um, just for the record, you are a hater.
#hatersgonnahate #hatersbackoff Secondly,
Ron is a great friend. Dont disrespect him or
Ill Avada Kedavra your butt!
Third Question:
Dear Harry Potter,
People say my brother Harrison looks like
you. But I want to look MOST like you. How
can I do this?
-Walker
My answer:
Wear glasses, cut your forehead with a knife
so you have a scar, wear a cape, wear a yellow
and red tie, be invisible, hold a wand, look
handsome, thats going to be hard for you, and
fake a British accent. Then youll look like me.
OK! Thats it for today! Stay tuned for Ask
Harry 5!

Thanks for reading!

Ask For Ethics

By Livvy Segall

Ask Harry 5
By: Rachel Alpert-Wisnia

Dear Whoever You Are, Many campers have been taking too many
cookies/snacks. Should we turn a blind eye, because they just want
yummy food, or get mad, because it is unfair? What should we do?
-Concerned Counselors
Its acceptable to want good food. Desserts are really good, but a good
solution is to provide a little more dessert, and only give it to them if
they have food on their plate. Check if they have food and give them
more cookies to them if they do, and only one if they have no food/one
crumb of food/just a drink.

Hello! So, when I checked, I got

no new questions, but I still have a
lot from a week ago. So Ill be
answering four of those.

Dear ethic can I be ur doggy

Dont ask that. Ask about your lack of punctuation. I dont know if
you mean you want to be my dog, or if I should put your dog in a can.
Ill go with the second one.
Make me a person.
I am already a person. You dont sound like one, because this just
sounds soooo wrong.
I have a crush on someone, but I think he likes someone else! What
should I do?
If you know the person who you think he likes, casually bring him
up in your conversation. If she says she likes him, blushes, or gets
excited, she probably likes him, so its not a good idea to do it. Either
way, its a good idea to be friends until he shows interest.
How can I be more healthy at camp?
I know its hard to be healthy when theres good food. At CRCAP,
theres a salad bar, so instead of taking lots of unhealthy food, take
some vegetables or fruit with your meal. There are sometimes
sandwiches and wraps that are healthier than the main option. Also,
instead of getting chocolate milk, you can get regular milk.
10 Facts about you
By Paige Doherty
1. You cant wash your eyes with soap
2. You cant breathe through your nose with your tongue out
3. You just tried it and its possible
4. Now youre smiling
5. Youre reading this even though its stupid
7. You are smiling
8. You did not realize I skipped #6
9. Youre checking and smiling
10. Youre still reading this right now
11. You did not realize that its stupid
12. There are only supposed to be 10 facts
13. There are really only 12 facts because I skipped 6

First Question:
Whats your favorite movie?
My answer:
Harry Potter movies. Duh.
Second Question:
Why am I so evil?
-Dante
My answer:
Well, Dante, Ive seen you around
and I may have an answer for this
question. Because you love killing
children.
Third Question:
Do you really really like ice
cream?
My answer:
Yes, yes I do. Especially frog
flavored.
Fourth Question:
Dear Hairy Potter,
Whats your favorite Hairy Potter
book?
From paris girl.
My answer:
Well, there are no books EVER
called Hairy Potter, but if you
mean Harry Potter, my favorite
book is the sixth. Wanna know
why? Its the first book where I
kiss Ginny. And as you all know,
Ginny is a GREAT kisser. So
that was pretty eventful.
Well, that was fun! Stay tuned for
Ask Harry 6!
