As we discussed in the introductory lecture, this reading list contains a very wide range of
sources which are our suggestions for wider reading on these topics.
Note: For Journal articles that appear on the reading list, you should be able to access
them by clicking the SFX logo that appears after you click on the article title. If you are not
using a UCL computer you may need to enter your UCL ID.

General readings for the module (4 items)

The psychology of language : from data to theory /Trevor A. Harley. - Trevor A. Harley
Book | Essential | This is the core text for many of the lectures concerning language
processing - specific chapters are noted in each subsection of the reading list below. Note
that an electronic edition is accessible via the UCL Library website.
The previous version of this text (Harley, 2008: third edition) is widely available in UCL
libraries. If you use this older edition please be sure to pay special attention to more
recent publications (2005 or later) in your supplemental reading.
Talking the talk: language, psychology and science - Harley, Trevor A., 2010
Book | Optional | If you are finding the main textbook by Harley (2014) difficult going,
this book may provide a more accessible introduction to many of the questions we will be
addressing.
The ascent of Babel: an exploration of language, mind, and understanding - Altmann,
Gerry T. M., c1997
Book | Recommended | This book provides a broad, accessible overview of the
psychology of language, giving a complementary perspective to the main text by Harley
(2007).
The language instinct - Pinker, Steven, 1995
Book | Optional | Another accessibly written book covering a broad range of issues
concerning language.

Lecture 1: What is special about language? (6 items)

Essential reading: Harley (2014) The Psychology of Language chapters 1-2, the first part of
chapter 3 (up to the section "The biological basis of language" on p.67), and the first part
of chapter 11 (Word Meaning: up to "Combining concepts" on p.336). This provides a core
basis the rest of the module as well.

Lecture 4: Computational models of reading (5 items)

Computational models are discussed in various different sections of Harley (2014) rather
than being presented all in one place. See the index entries for "connectionism",
"connectionist modeling", "connectionist models": in each case a connectionist model is
presented in context of a specific domain and theoretical question addressed using these
methods. There is also a very brief appendix (p.481-485) describing interactive activation
models and backpropagation.

Lectures 5,6,8: Language in the brain (14 items)

Note: these three lectures are not in sequence due to lecturer unavailability. We will have
the first two lectures on language and the brain (5,6), then one on language production,
and then return to speech comprehension in the brain (8). See the section below for the
readings for language production.
Harley (2014) focuses on cognitive, rather than neural aspects of language processing, so
this book is fairly limited in its treatment of neuroscience of language except where this
informs cognitive theories (see pp.17-22 which gives a good impression of Harley's
perspective). Therefore it is important to supplement the main text with outside reading.
Essential reading for this topic is the chapter by Devlin which is linked from the main
Moodle page for this week's lecture.
