Back under the lights

Who says newspapers cant do social
media?
With this years high school football preview,
we decided to try something a little different.
If theres one thing we know about our
student-athletes and readers, its that they
enjoy connecting. Whether it be through
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or some other
social platform, we know that people have a
desire to instantaneously share moments with
friends and family.
This is why we decided to design a football
preview that would last all season.
Over the past month or so, The Greer Citizen
has created social media accounts (under the
username @fridaynitelikes) with the intention
of providing you the most accurate, up-to-date
information regarding your favorite teams: Blue
Ridge, Byrnes, Eastside, Greer and Riverside.
Keeping up with these teams is a full-time
job. Weve spent the better part of the summer
attending practices, 7-on-7 tournaments,
jamborees, picture days and other various
events, with the hope of providing on-the-spot
coverage.
We have been posting our experiences with
each team to social media and we plan to

continue this effort throughout the 2015

season.
You cant always be at every game. We
know that.
Thats why were taking it upon ourselves to
be your eyes and ears when the biggest high
school football moments happen.
You might be looking for team schedules,
injury updates, game stats or region standings,
but one thing is for certain: youre going to
need to follow fridaynitelikes.
We would like to thank all of the players,
parents, coaches and fans that helped us
make this football preview a reality.
We hope that you will connect with us as we
get set for another football season.
Greer is one of the best football towns in the
Upstate of South Carolina. Whether youre
rooting for the Tigers, Rebels, Eagles, Yellow
Jackets or Warriors this fall, you can rest easy
knowing youll be watching some of best
players on the high school gridiron.
We wish each of our teams the best of luck
as they begin their pursuit of a championship.
See you under the lights!

Teams on the move

League realignment adds fifth classification, local

teams on the move. @BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Area teams jump to next

level for 2016-17 season
A recently unveiled region realignment
proposal from the South Carolina High School
League (SCHSL) could see five area schools
make a jump to the next level.
The proposal, which adds a Class AAAAA,
sends Byrnes and Riverside to 5A and bumps
Greer, Eastside and Blue Ridge up to 4A.
While Greer, Eastside and Blue Ridge would
stay in the same region, Byrnes and Riverside
would split up in the proposed format. The
Rebels region would include Dorman, Gaffney,
Spartanburg and Boiling Springs, while the

Warriors region would have Greenwood,

Hillcrest, Laurens, Mauldin and Wade
Hampton.
Joining the three Greenville County teams in
Class AAAA would be Travelers Rest and
Union County.
The changes would go into effect during the
2016-2017 school year if approved.
Greer and Byrnes have already agreed to
resume their rivalry series, beginning next
season.

Wishing our teams

a safe, successful

TD Club ready for new season

Will meet Thursdays at Greer First Baptist Church.

@BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

TD Club returns Aug. 27

Looking for lunch and some football
discussion?
You need look no further than the Greer
Touchdown Club, which kicks off Thursday,
Aug. 27, at Greer First Baptist Church.
The weekly meetings will highlight local
coaches, players and guest speakers.
Lunch during each meeting will be catered
by The Clock Restaurant and will open at
11:45 a.m. The program will start shortly after
noon.
The five area high school coaches will give
a short preview of their seasons during the
first meeting, said Robbie Gravley with the
touchdown club. Well also have a pickem
contest that will go on throughout the year.
The touchdown club usually runs for about
11 weeks.
We ask people to come to the first meeting
and join on site, he said.
The cost is $35 to join.

Lunch each week is $8 for members and

$10 for guests.
Everybody eats lunch somewhere every
day, so why not come to a place where you
can eat lunch from The Clock and also talk
about football with your friends, Gravley said.
The Greer Touchdown Club will recognize
four Players of the Week at each meeting.
Those players will be chosen by The Greer
Citizen.
We try to highlight four Players of the
Week, Gravley said. We try to make that a
big deal. We feel like were a different club
than a lot of the touchdown clubs around in
that we still primarily feature high school
football. Were not looking to bring in the
college coaches and give Players of the
Week to the start running back at Clemson.
We want to promote high school players and
high school football.

Rebuilding the tradition

Tigers plan to surprise region with young, talented

roster. @BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Tigers rely on seniors for

leadership, production
You might be surprised by the Blue Ridge
football team this fall.
After a 6-5 finish last season, the Tigers lost
several key offensive starters, including their
starting running back, wide receiver and quarterback. But dont count Blue Ridge out just
yet.
Weve got weapons that nobodys seen because were young, senior running back Vonta
Jenkins said. Were going to have some big
games during the early part of the season. We
know defenses are going to try to get in our
backfield, but if our line holds strong, weve got
weapons everywhere.
Under center for Blue Ridge is sophomore
Jake Smith. He is taking over for Jay Urich,
who transferred to Wren at the end of last season.
Hes doing pretty well, head coach Shane
Clark said of his quarterback. Hes progressing and we like what we see out of him. Were
just pleased that hes making the progress that
he is.
Smith said stepping into the leadership role
has been difficult.
Its been a challenge because Im so young
trying to lead a team of old guys, Smith said.
There are challenges in everything, but I feel
like Im coming along and this is going to be a
great season. Its hard because Jay was a
great guy. Not only was he a phenomenal athlete, but he was a great leader on the field.
When stuff like this comes up, youve got to
step in and be a leader.
Much of the teams offense will run through
Jenkins, who began to show what he was capable of in 2014.
Vonta will be our primary runner this season, Clark said. (The backfield) is one of the
big areas were trying to get covered right now.
Were using a lot of different guys, from sophomore to senior, just seeing whats going to be
our best bet back there.
I know what defenses want to do, so Ive got
to step up and help our younger guys learn
how to read the looks well be getting, Jenkins
said. On defense, weve got so many people
that can play in so many different positions.
Were healthy and strong, and that should
make us 10-times better on defense.

Weve got weapons

that nobodys seen
because were young.
Were going to have
some big games
during the early part
of the season.
VONTA JENKINS

Also returning for Blue Ridge is senior safety

John Patrick, who was one of the Tigers leading tacklers last season.
Playing with John, youve just got to make
the ball carrier run to him because hes there
and he wont miss, Jenkins said. We have to
make sure, though, that when we go to make a
tackle, its five of us instead of one of us.
Speed kills on defense and on offense, so
thats something weve been working on.
Patrick said his main goal is to get his team
working as a unit.
I probably lead more by example, Patrick
said. I like to show what I can do through how
I play and how I act on and off the field.
Weve got to stay close, he said. With so
many new guys, we have to be close-knit and
rely on each other out there.
Senior center Trenton Goldsmith said despite the loss of starters, he believes his line is
ready to step up and make things happen on
offense.
The guys last year did a lot for us, Goldsmith said. But I feel like weve got some guys
that are ready to step up and do what they
need to do.
The Tigers will open the season on Aug. 28
at home against Wade Hampton. Game time is
set for 7:30 p.m.

Getting over the hump

Rebels loook to move past Upper State championship

status. @BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Byrnes reloads with

talented varsity roster
Much has changed at Byrnes during the past
three seasons, but the success has not.
The Rebels have been through three head
coaches in three years, but have made their
way to the Class AAAA Upper State championship each season.
This year, however, Brian Lane is hoping to
alter that trend.
That group last year had three different
head coaches in three different years, but they
were still right there competing for a state title,
the second-year head coach said. Hopefully,
we can take it one step further this year.
Theyre getting used to me and Im getting
used to them, so having some consistency
there will really help.
The Rebels return a strong core, including
quarterback Micah Young, who passed for
3,300 yards and 36 touchdowns last year. Also
returning are defensive standouts Jaylan
Foster, Kobe Lyles, Hayden Mitchem, D.J.
Crosby and Devin Dexter.
On offense, the Rebels will look for production from Ray Miller, Bouvier Howard, Demarcus Gregory and Chavis Dawkins.
Devin Dexter is anchoring that defensive
line, Lane said. Hes been doing a great job
this preseason getting that push and making
things happen. Jaylan Foster plays both ways
for us. Hes had a great summer and is up to
about 11 offers now. I have no doubt those two
will make us strong on the defensive side of
the ball.
Dexter said the defense has made plenty of
progress during the offsesason.
Were ready for anybody, he said. Our defense is really stressing turnovers this year. Especially on the defensive line, thats going to
require getting to the quarterback every time.
We have to work harder than everybody
else, Dexter said. Thats something that every
great team does and thats the level were trying to get to.
Foster said he has had to step into a leadership role as a returning starter.
Ive just been working on being a vocal leader, Foster said. I think I lead out there, but the
coaches want me to be more vocal with these
guys, so I have to step up. I also have to make
sure my actions match my words.
In 2014, the Rebels were hindered by penalties in several games, causing the defense to
give up a number of unnecessary scores.

Were not worried

about what everybody
else has to say.
Were just focusing
on us, and everybody
here has taken on the
task to get better.
DEVIN DEXTER

Were trying to get the connection down

more and limit the penalties, he said. We had
a lot of penalties last year that killed us, so we
have to get rid of some of that stuff.
Byrnes is expected to compete for a region
title once again this fall, but Dexter said his
team cannot afford to focus on expectations.
Were not worried about what everybody
else has to say, Dexter said. Were just focusing on us, and everybody here has taken on
the task to get better. Im really proud of the
team so far.
As for goals, Lane said he wants his team to
get a little bit better each time on the field.
I want us to get better day in and day out,
he said. We have to work on tomorrow today.
If you do that and care about each other, that
will take you further than you thought youd
ever go.
Part of Lanes success can be attributed to
the relationships hes built at Byrnes.
Im a relationship guy. I know that players
dont care how much you know until they know
how much you care, Lane said. Its not necessarily about being their friend. I want them to
know I care about them, but caring is saying no
and caring is punishment. They understand
that and I think they care about me as well.
The Rebels face Northwestern in a week
zero matchup this Friday night at Nixon Field.
Byrnes ousted Northwestern from the playoffs
just nine months ago.

Emphasizing the fourth quarter

New head coach, fresh faces help Eagles improve
reputation. @BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Eastside sets sights on

rival during week one
The fourth quarter plagued the Eagles last
season, costing them several football games
they had a chance to win.
With a new head coach and a few fresh faces, the Eastside football team is hoping to
change its reputation in 2015.
Last year, we just couldnt finish in the second half, senior wide receiver Qualen Anderson said. I feel like, with this team right here,
well be able to keep the momentum and stay
in games.
We have a lot of work to do, added head
coach Steve Wilson, who took over the program in the spring. Eastside has not been a
very successful football program for the last 10
or 12 years, so we all feel like weve got a big
challenge to get out there and perform well.
The Eagles are without graduated quarterback Drake Turnquist and wide receiver Ty
Thomason, who carried most of the load on offense throughout the past two seasons. Anderson believes the offense, however, will be
ready for the challenge.
Im taking over for Ty (Thomason), so I feel
like, learning from him, I can pick up where he
left off, Anderson said. I feel like a lot of the
leadership falls on me because Im a returning
starter. I need to help lead the offense and defense as well.
Were looking forward to our offense, he
said. Our running back has been making
some strides this summer, but weve gotten
some our basketball guys to come out and
play wide receiver, so were going to be more
of a threat.
Senior offensive and defensive lineman Taylor Patterson said he believes Eastside is
poised for a breakout year.
We want to beat a lot of the teams that
weve been in games with, but couldnt close it
out, Patterson said.
We just have to set a good example and
give these guys somebody they can look up
to, he said. I have to do things that make people say, I want to play like this guy. I have to
be a leader on and off the field and get after it.
Playing on both sides of the ball will be
tough, but Patterson said he wants to do what
he can to help the team be successful.
You have to have some personal motivation, Patterson said. It takes a lot of hard work
and running during the summer. It gets intense.

You have to have some

personal motivation...
Youre never really
prepared for it
until you actually
get out there and do it.
TAYLOR PATTERSON
Youre never really prepared for it until you actually get out there and do it.
Wilson plans to run the spread with his new
team, but the ground game will be very important as well.
One thing we have to be able to do is run
the football, he said. Whether thats out of the
spread formation or out of a two-back set, the
one offensive philosophy I do have is that we
need to be able to run the football.
This isnt the first time Wilson has found himself trying to rebuild a struggling program. The
head coach said he went through something
similar at Gainesville High School in Georgia.
I had to rebuild that program, he said.
Gainesville had won three games in three
years and only about six or seven games in six
years. The program was down. It was much
like this program. It needed rebuilding.
Wilson turned Gainesville into a playoff team
shortly after accepting job.
I hired a couple of guys that I knew could
help get the job done and we started rebuilding
that program, Wilson said. We put that program back on the map and there were a lot of
things implemented there that they had not
been doing. A lot of people said it couldnt be
done, but I felt like it could be done.
Eastside is looking to get things going in the
right direction during a week one matchup with
rival Riverside.
Well be ready, Anderson said.

Resuming the road to perfection

New season means a new slate for experienced Yellow

Jackets. @LelandBurch
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Greer to begin state title

quest against Clinton
Repeating, let alone improving upon last
years success will be a huge challenge for
Greer High. The Yellow Jackets reeled off 11
straight wins, capturing a fourth consecutive region title, before being ousted in the 2014 football playoffs.
No wins come easy, and I appreciate every
one we get. But I have never thought about repeating what we did last year, or about the region, either. I just dont think that way, declares
Greer head coach Will Young. My only focus
right now is getting ready to play the first game
with Clinton. That is plenty to think about.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Clinton twice
last year, including a playoff game, and the
Red Devils will be out for revenge in the 2015
season opener on Aug. 28 on the road. After
non-region contests with Riverside and Union,
Greer will plunge into Region II, AAA competition.
I have no idea how the region will go,
Young admits. Based on last year, I know that
Berea is improving, and Blue Ridge and Emerald are always tough. We had a heck of a
game with both of them last year.
As for the Yellow Jackets, Young says, our
kids are giving a good effort. Were not quite
where we need to be as far as executing, but
as long as they continue to give good effort, we
will get there.
On paper at least, the 2015 team should be
able to score with an offense led by senior
quarterback Mario Cusano, a two-year starter.
He will be complemented by Dorian Lindsey, a
versatile two-year starter at wide receiver who
has been used at times to run the ball from the
wildcat formation.
Joining Lindsey at wide receiver are seniors
Zach Glidden, a two-year starter and Troy
Pride, also a returning starter, along with juniors Cameron Kelly and Alex Seifert, who saw
considerable action toward the end of last season.
Another senior veteran, Adrian McGee, returns at running back. He will be backed up by
Pride, sophomore Quay Thackston and freshman Dre Williams.
Brice Green, a junior who was on the field for
a length of time in a number of one-sided
games last year, will again back up Cusano at
calling signals.
Young has some holes to fill on the offensive
line, but the Yellow Jackets have seven return-

No wins come easy,

COACH WILL YOUNG
ees who will enter the season game ready. The
line will be anchored by a pair of returning junior starters, Noah Hannon and Noah Blosser
at guard and center, respectively. Seniors
Adam Tapp and Tyrek Donaldson will step up
to start at tackle after having lettered last year.
Bradley Thompson, a sophomore who started
one game last year, is expected to open at the
other guard spot. Key back-ups are sophomore Matthew Pearson at center and Ryan
McCullough and Jacob Schaffner, both juniors,
at guard.
Greers defense has some question marks
with the graduation of inside linebackers Tyler
Wright and Cedric Sullivan. The only returning
outside linebacker is Isaiah Long, a senior.
McGee, who played some at outside linebacker last year, has been shifted to safety to
ease the burden of playing both ways.
Candidates at inside linebacker include Brody Wright, a junior up from the jayvee team
and the younger brother of Tyler Wright; Tim
Eckroche, a sophomore and jayvee graduate;
Tiberius Williams, a senior transfer from Hillcrest who has not played football for two years
and is the brother of Tyrone Williams who was
a member of the 2003 State Championship
team; Kevon Jones, a sophomore up from the
jayvee team; and freshman Quintavious Cohen.
Thackston also could see duty at outside
linebacker while Jamil Cannada may move in
at at safety.
The Yellow Jackets open the season next
Friday on the road at Clinton.

Keeping the momentum alive

Warriors look to capitalize following first AAAA playoff

bid. @BillyCannada
GreerCITIZeN.COm

Warriors aim to set the

bar even higher in 2015
Last season was a historic one for the Riverside football team.
The Warriors became the first team in school
history to make the Class AAAA playoffs, but
with a new year come new challenges.
Having lost several key starters, including its
quarterback, to graduation, Riverside has had
the task of rebuilding this summer. Still, the
Warriors are focusing on keeping the momentum alive.
Weve got nowhere to go but up, senior defensive back Jeremiah Bogan said. It hurts to
lose the players that we lost last year, but were
continuing to work hard and play together. We
all understand the concept of playing for each
other. Playing for the man next to you makes
the game a lot easier.
Head coach Phil Smith said Bogan and other
returning veteran players will be crucial for success this season.
Our guys came in excited from what they
did last year, Smith said. The older guys that
were on this team were apart of that, as well as
some of the younger guys. I dressed out pretty
much my entire JV team on the varsity last
year to give them that experience. They know
what it takes and know how it feels. Theyve
come in this year excited to carry on what they
did last season.
Senior tight end Corey Bridges was a strong
target for the Warriors in 2014, but he knows
the team has a lot of work to do in order to improve this fall.
As a team, we have worked really hard together, Bridges said. A lot of us have played
together since little league, so we have some
good chemistry as a whole. Its good to see everyone working and progressing daily.
Adjusting to his new quarterback, Aaron
Odom, has been challenging at times.
It has taken some getting used to, Bridges
said. Ive played with him in the past, so its
not as big of an adjustment as you sometimes
have. I just want to help the team any way I
can.
Odom said he will need to find his rhythm
within the offense quickly.
Im not a dual threat, he admitted. Speed
isnt my forte. Im more of a pocket passer, so
Im trying to improve that area of my game. I
have to work on understanding coverages. I
have to be able to read the defenses and take
what they give me.

We all understand
the concept of playing
for each other.
Playing for the man
next to you makes
the game a lot easier.
JEREMIAH BOGAN
On defense, Bogan leads a secondary that
lost several members to graduation.
Our defense is going to be really good this
year, Bogan said. Last year, I thought we had
the best secondary in the state, but this year
Im the only returning starter. These guys we
have now are talented athletes, but they have
to get the experience.
Were still a young team, but I believe we
can do anything we set our minds to, he added. There are no limits to this team. I believe
in these guys.
Making playoffs for the first time in AAAA
was a huge thing, Bridges said. Its definitely
a spark that weve brought into this coming
year. Were holding on to that and using as
motivation to get better.
For Smith, this offseason has been about
nailing down technique and re-teaching fundamentals.
We have to stress technique work and try to
get our guys the best advantage they can get
while theyre on the field, he said. We need
them to be technicians of the game.
The Warriors will face some of the toughest
teams in Class AAAA this season, including:
Byrnes, Spartanburg, Dorman and Hillcrest.
That schedule doesnt scare Riverside.
I love our schedule, Bogan said. For a kid
that aspires to play college football, I want to
play against the best teams every week. Thats
where it is right here, Region II-AAAA.
