a) Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:
Antarctica is situated at the southern end of the world. Most of the inhabitants of the
earth do not know that it is a continent in itself. It is surrounded by a broad zone of
drifting pack ice and icebergs. So it was inaccessible to explorers until the advent of
modern ice breakers and long range planes with a combination of ordinary ice fields
and whose skies allow them to land on compact snow.
i) Where is Antarctica situated?
ii) When did its exploration become possible?
iii) Who do not know Antarctica itself is a continent?
iv) What is Antarctica surrounded by?
v) Write the antonym of modern.
b) Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow by
choosing the right answer:
There is, on the whole, nothing on earth intended for innocent people so horrible
as a school. To begin with, it is a prison. But it is in some respects more cruel than a
prison. In a prison, for instance, you are not forced to read books written by the
warders (who of course would not be warders if they could write readable books), and
beaten or otherwise formented if you cannot remember their utterly unmemorable
contents. In the prison you are not forced to sit listening to the turn keys discoursing
without charm or interest on subjects that they dont understand and dont care about,
and are therefore incapable of making you understand or care about. In a prison they
may torture your body; but they do not torture your brains; and they protect you
against violence and outrage from your fellow- prisoners. In a school you have none
of these advantages.

A)
One day a very old lady was traveling in a train. She was very well dressed. She was
sitting in a corner, quietly reading a book. The traveling ticket examiner came into
her compartment and asked for the ticket. The old lady looked in her bag but could
not find it. She then looked for it among her other things but still she couldnt find
the ticket.
The ticket examiner could see that the old lady was visibly trembling. She started
sweating. Her water bottle fell down and rolled to one of the corners
spilling
its
contents all the way; but she didnt seem to notice it. She was trying to open the side
pocket of her hand bag from the wrong side. Finally not knowing what to do, the old
lady cried out impatiently, Ive lost my ticket. Pull the chain please.
The ticket examiner said, Please dont worry. I know that youre honest. I shall
make sure that you do not have any trouble. But the lady said, You do not
understand. If I do not find my ticket, how will I know where I have to get off ?
