A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker,

Founder of the Paulist Fathers
The pages of the history of the Church teach that in every age she
has had her saints and providential men. But in addition to these, at
the beginning of every important or critical epoch, the Holy Spirit has
called into existence Religious Institutions. The aim of these
institutions, appreciating the aspirations and understanding the errors
of their day, and guided by the instinct of divine grace, as to establish
religious organizations fitted to direct aright the one and to refute the
other. The same pages tell us that in this way these same institutions
became more powerful auxiliaries to the Church in accomplishing her
divine mission. [On the Mission of New Religious Communities, 1876]
If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill,
and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul
Robichaud, CSP, at (202) 269-2519 and tell him your story.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER
In todays first reading, Joshua challenges the people to decide whom
they will serve. Recalling Gods faithfulness to them and to their
ancestors, the people declare, We also will serve the Lord, for He is
our God. May we, too, be mindful of Gods gifts to us and renew our
commitment to serve Him with grateful hearts. See Joshua 24:18

SENIOR GATHERING
The Senior Group (55+) will meet Tuesday, Sept.1, 12-2pm in
Carvlin Hall. Potluck. And the topic will be the one that no one wants
to talk about---cemeteries. Pam Henkel will discuss what is going on
in Catholic cemeteries---expectations---cost---is it worth it---sharing a
plot---why think about it now---restrictions/no restrictions. Hear what
others have to say about this topic. Come and listen, ask questions--get answers so you can make a reasonable decision. Group is always
open to welcoming new members. See you there!

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time August 23, 2015

Pastoral Corner
Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
The Gospel this week presents us with another of Peters impetuous yet heartwarming Professions of Faith: We have
come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. Peter goes to the heart of who Jesus was and what he
was about: not merely a teacher or a healer or a prophet, although Jesus is all three, Peter proclaims that Jesus is the
Holy One of God, just as later the early Christians come to believe that he was, in fact, the Son of God.
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus performed great signs and wonders, curing and healing and even raising people from
the dead. Yet even though he healed and fed the bodies of people, his main concern was to nourish their minds and
hearts with what Peter so aptly called 'the words of eternal life! His words brought peace in many different ways.
'Go in peace, your sins are forgiven! With these words he set sinners free. 'Fear not, it is I. With these words he
calmed the fears of his apostles when they thought they were going to drown. To the woman at the well he said,
'Anyone who drinks the water I can give will never get thirsty again.' There is a thirst in every human heart that only
God can quench. To the people he said, 'I am the bread of life. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever.' Who
would not want to eat of this bread? Again he said, 'I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk
in darkness, but will always have the light of life! The light of Jesus was such that no darkness, not even that of death,
could overpower it. To the Jewish leaders he said, 'I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and they follow me. I
give them eternal life.' To the grief-stricken Martha and Mary he said I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who
believes in me will never die [eternally].' To the apostles, who were distraught on hearing him say that he was leaving
them, he said, 'Let not our hearts be troubled or afraid. I am going to prepare a place for you.' And, This day you will
be with me in Paradise.' With these words he brought hope to a condemned man. On another occasion the religious
leaders sent the temple guards to arrest him. But they never laid a hand on him. Instead, they were spell-bound by his
teaching. Even they recognized that Jesus' words were special, and went back to their masters and declared, 'No one
ever spoke like this man speaks.'
Jesus truly has the words of eternal life. And those words of Jesus have been preserved for us in the Gospels. Each
Sunday we are invited to listen to them, but we also need to make Peter's profession of faith our own: 'Lord, to whom
shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.'
Our presence here is a sign of our faith, but we need to reaffirm our commitment, just as in the First Reading the
Israelites did on taking possession of the Promised Land. Every Sunday we get a chance to do this. We need the Lord
to strengthen our faith. We also need to strengthen the faith of one another. Jesus used signs to affirm the power of
his words. We too must let our deeds show the power of our words of faith.
