WebSphere Business Components Simplify

Delivery of e-business Solutions in Financial
Services
independent software vendors
provisioning of components.

Overview
WebSphere Business Components
Family

The value of component technology

is becoming increasingly apparent in
todays application development
environment, enabling a faster,
lower cost method for assembly of
e-business applications.
WebSphere Business Components
help you leverage the benefits of
component technology, by offering
easy-to-use packages of software
implementation that can be
independently developed and
delivered, composed from other
components, and have explicit
interfaces for the services they
provide.
New for the WebSphere Business
Components Family

WebSphere Business
Components Composer (WSBCC)
is a development framework for
composing prebuilt, ready-to-use
components.

IBM Bank Teller Business

Components offers a set of
components ready to use with the
Component Composer.

These components provide a

complete set of server side
functions to manage cash
drawers, branch employees,
branch administration, and
journals. These highly functional
coarse-grained components
reduce the development and
deployment tasks necessary to
implement a customized bank
branch solution.

With the growing multitude of

service delivery channels, it is a
challenge to maintain a common
infrastructure for providing
customer service. IBM can help
financial institutions to meet this
challenge and stay competitive in
todays marketplace with the
following additions to the
WebSphere Business Components
family:

One of the most important focus

areas has been ease-of-use across
installation, development and
product documentation. As a result,
these products have a
comprehensive Web-based
documentation that you can
immediately use.

Key Prerequisites

The components may consist of

services included with the
product, components purchased
separately or developed to fulfill
customer-specific requirements.

Refer to the Technical Information

section.

WSBCC has been designed to

extend the services of the
information system for any
corporate institution so that they
become ubiquitous through all
delivery channels.

September 1, 2000

The WSBCC composition engine

allows operations to be defined
externally in the Development
Workbench Repository. The
external definition of business
operations minimizes the need for
developing new code and reduces
the time required to make
business operations available.

Bank Teller Components can also be used to support
other customer service delivery channels that the
enterprise may want to utilize.

Description
WebSphere
Business
Components
Composer
(WSBCC) V4.0
supports
development
of
components-based applications. It consists of a highly
productive development workbench and a starter set of
Java components for large-scale, transaction-oriented
application construction.

Features of IBM Bank Teller Business Components

The IBM Bank Teller Business Components V4.0 product
offers a rich set of ready-to-use, coarse-grained Java
components specific to branch teller applications:

Moreover, WSBCC offers a common infrastructure and a

set of prebuilt components to create applications that
support a multichannel architecture.

It provides an environment with easy-to-customize

composition engine, development tools, and additional
prebuilt functions. These features allow institutions to
develop the service solutions they need for all of their
customer access points based on open Web standards.
The deployment platform is independent of the
development platform, and it can be modified without
requiring changes to the application developed using the
WSBCC.

Benefits of IBM Bank Teller Business Components

Features of WebSphere Business Components

Composer

A well-defined, proven Java application architecture

for multichannel applications based on the WebSphere
software platform for e-business.
Parametric composition engine to launch transactions
to several types of back-end systems with minimum
coding required.

used in the building of financial applications such as:
host communications, store for forward, financial
device support, message formatting framework, and
forms printing.

Promotes clear separation of development roles

focused on specific areas of application and
infrastructure development.

Protection of back-end systems investments. The

WebSphere Business Components Composer allows
the reuse of existing business logic and transactions.
Code reuse and parameterization also facilitates
maintenance of the solution.

Provides access to innovative new WebSphere

Component-based technology and integrates with
existing business function.

Reduces the learning curve by providing prebuilt

infrastructure components with well-defined interfaces.

Easy-to-use productivity tools that hide the underlying

technical details.

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the

product, when used in accordance with its associated
documentation, is capable of correctly processing
monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting
the euro currency formatting conventions (including the
euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for
example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used
with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware
products that are EuroReady may or may not have an
engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.
Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM
products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are
not specific to these countries are deemed to be not
ready for euro unless otherwise stated in the products
country-specific specifications.

IBM Bank Teller Business Components V4.0 help financial

institutions develop Java
front-end
bank
teller
applications that access back-end legacy systems.

The IBM Bank Teller Business Components exploit the

multichannel architecture of the prerequisite Component
200-285

The service end date for these Year 2000 ready products
is December 31, 2001.

Reduces development time through a centralized data

repository and tools where the application information
is maintained.

Shortens development cycles through component

reuse.
Components
allow
extension
using
object-oriented techniques and parameterization.

These products are Year 2000 ready. When used in

accordance with their associated documentation, they are
capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or
receiving date data within and between the twentieth and
twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for
example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the
products properly exchange accurate date data with
them.

WebSphere Business Components or existing business

functions accessed through Java and XML technology
from within WebSphere. The component composition
services of WSBCC build on security, transactional, and
other application services of WebSphere.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third

party
software
(preloaded
or
not)
and/or
third-party-attached hardware. In these instances IBM is
not in a position to assert that these third party products
are, in themselves, EuroReady.

MQSeries Integrator is mainly used to process

server-to-server messages, by providing a powerful
message broker hub. For example, MQSeries can be
used to manage message traffic between a companys
Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Enterprise
Resource Planning (ERP) systems.
The integration
services provided by the hub consist of flows of
operations on messages: processing of message field
contents to determine routing, performing calculations,
checking validity, and transforming messages. MQSeries
Integrator uses a variety of message formats including
XML. MQSeries Integrator can exchange messages with
WebSphere-based applications, but does not run in the
WebSphere environment.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as

Hardware ready.
EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the

solution providers have:

Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to

comply with relevant EC rules

Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by:

Detailing euro-related requirements

Describing how these will be implemented in the

solution

Declaring when the implementation will be generally

available

MQSeries Integrator and WSBCC can work together. The

two products can interoperate and share message
formats through WSBCCs MQSeries Integration service.
For example, a financial institution could use WSBCC
alongside MQSeries Integrator for controlling the flow of
front-office financial operations (WSBCC) and message
brokering (MQSeries Integrator) the required access to
multiple core back-end systems and client files.

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be

clearly identified as features of the Solution specification
as described in the contracts document.

In addition, WSBCC can be combined with MQSeries

Integrator and MQSeries Workflow to build a powerful
platform for Web-based business-to-business integration.

Product Positioning

Compare WebSphere Business Components Composer

with LANDP

The WebSphere Business Components Composer and

IBM Bank Teller Business Components extend the
WebSphere family by providing a set of prebuilt
components that simplifies the task of building
customized applications on the WebSphere software
platform for e-business products for ISVs, Business
Partners, and IBM customers. By working with these
products, application builders focus on business aspects
of the solution instead of infrastructure issues.

LANDP provides device support for IBM financial

input/output (I/O) devices for those wanting to implement
WSBC-based applications. You can benefit from this
facility when you want to run existing LANDP-based
applications alongside new WSBC-based applications or
plan for staged migration of applications from LANDP to
WebSphere Business Components.

with MQSeries Integrator

MQSeries
Integrator
and
WebSphere
Business
Components Composer have similar flow control
characteristics, but they differ in focus, in the services
provided, and in their application environments.
WSBCC is primarily focused on composing and delivering
business content from a WebSphere server to a variety
of client environments. For example, WSBCC can be used
to define and control the operational steps in a financial
transaction such as a funds transfer. A funds transfer is
composed of a flow of operational steps (debit, credit,
host access, receipt print, journaling, and so on) each of
which would be handled by a business component
service. The business components may consist of new

Ordering Information
WebSphere Business Components Composer V4.0,
Enterprise Edition is a product with one charge unit
processors. These are available in units of one for
non-OS/390 processors. The Program Package feature
(CD-ROM) is required for the first processor on the first
workstation or server. An Additional Processor feature is
required for each processor beyond the first one. As an
alternative to purchasing a WSBCC, Enterprise Edition
Additional Processor feature for each processor beyond
the first one, the customer may choose to acquire a
WSBCC, Workgroup Edition Additional User feature for
each user of end-user applications built using the
Enterprise Edition product. A Workgroup Edition license
does not entitle the user to use any development feature
of the WSBCC product. The price of WSBCC, Enterprise
Edition is based on the number of processors in the
system or node executing all or any part of the product,
including applications built using these products. In the
case of a symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) system, the
customer must also acquire the Additional Processor
feature. For example, a server configuration with two
4-way SMPs, whether stand-alone systems or nodes in a
larger system, would require a Program Package, and
seven Additional Processor features for each of the two
products installed. The price of WSBCC, Workgroup
Edition is based on the number of users. Customers of
WSBCC, Workgroup Edition should plan on implementing
counting methods for users and then obtain Additional
User entitlements to the extent required. The above
applies similarly to the IBM Bank Teller Business
Components V4.0, Enterprise and Workgroup Edition
products. However, in order to use the IBM Bank Teller
Business Components product the customer must also
purchase or hold the same number of features of the
prerequisite WSBCC products.
