InthepastfewyearsinAustralia,aquantityofsuburbandwellingshavebeendestroyedinexplosionsbyfoolsthinkingtheycansensiblyhousewetcell(flooded)directventedto
atmosphereoffgridbatteriesinthingssuchasgaragesorassilly,intheirhouse!
TotallysealedbatteriessuchasAGMandGELleadcrystalortotallysealedwetcellleadacidwouldbefine,butunfortunatelytheycosttwiceasmuchas"wetcellventilatedto
atmospherebatteriesthatquicklycreateanexplosivepoisonousatmosphereduringuseorcharging".
Whenwetcellbatteriesdischargeorchargetheygiveofanextremelyflammable,mildlypoisonousexplosivegascalled"Hydrogen"thatisgeneratedbythechemicalreactionofoxidizingthelead
platefromtheacidsaltscausingwatertohaveitsOxygenatomsplitfromits'hydrogenatoms.
Therearerulestousingandmaintainingawetcellbatterybanksystem.
Why?wetcellfloodedleadacidareusedisbecausetheyarecheaperandlastlongeroveramuchlargerDODusetodischargequantities.
SealedandGellifespanlastupto15yearsmaxandgenerallyasmallDODtonumberofdischargesquantity.

1.Bankhousingisoutsideofadwellingandmustbe(compulsorymandatory)atleast10metersfromit,(itisnotallowedtobewithinornearanyresidenceorbuildingnotspecificallydesignedfor
"solelyhousingthewetcellventedtoatmospherebatterybank").Theriskofinjury,explosionorpoisoningis"tooreal"toallowcloseproximitytolivingareas.
2.Becausethechargecontroller(s)mustbehousedwiththebattery'stheremustbeseparatesealedwallcompartmentdirectlybackingthebatterybanktopreventgassesreachingthecontroller(s),
butallowheatandtemperaturechangestoprogressquicklythroughthewalltothechargers(sealedinnersanctum).Thechargersthemselvesmustbekeptdrybutwellventilated(makesthisabit
wobblyasatemperatureincubationactionforitsenvironmentsowillonlyeverbesomewherearoundtherequiredtemperature).Thechargermustbekeptwellventilatedtopreventitsdumpload
resistorbeingtoohot(ifthedumploadresistorisbuiltinwiththecharger).
Note:Thebatteriesandchargerhousingmustbekeptasfreefromfloodingbyrainwaterrunoff.Choosethelocationofthehousingsensibly,potentiallybuildaspecial(raiseduponlegs)nonflexing
basetoholdthe1.52tonneofbatteriesrequired!
3.TheBatteryBankhousing(inner)istotallysealedwithaspecial8meter(minimum)ventilatortowerthathasanAirIN(narrower)tubeandanAirOUT(wider)tubefromthebatterybank
atmosphere.
[***]Theairspace(volume)insidetheinnerhousingmustbeaslittleaspossibletohelpthetwoventilatorhosestocarryawaythehydrogengasproducedbyusageandcharging.
Thereshouldbeenoughspaceforeachofthelinesofbatterieswitha2cmspacingbetweeneachbatteryandthe10Lsealedwaterheatingdrum(containsafishtankheaterforwinterandlateautumn
earlyspring).Thelines'endsshouldbehalfabatteryforwardorbackfromeachtoallowviewingonthesideofeachbatterythroughthe2cmgap.
Theinnerhousingatonecornerhasthe"airventingoutlet(ATMOSPHEREAIROUT)hoseendprotrudingintothehousingatthetop"onlyafewcentimetersin.
Theoppositecorneroftheinnerhousinghastheinlet(ATMOSPHEREAIRIN)hoseprotrudinginwithitscollectionorificeendonlyafewcentimetersfromthefloor.
ThismeansthatwithverylittleinnerhousinginternalspaceandverylowairspeedpasttheoutletnozzlesofthetwohosesthehydrogenwillberemovedAND,ifthereweretobeanyignitionofany
remaininghydrogenintheconfinedspace(oroutside),suchanexplosionwouldbeunlikelytoeverbeofanyseverity!(andventilatingbyrunninglongdistancesoftubewithafanarenotrequired).
Onefinalnote,alwaysputafewtotally180o "S"bend(kinksdonotcrushclosed)intobothhosesupthepoleameterorsobeforethenozzle(hoseend)outlet,andagainanotherbeforetheinner
housingconnection.Thisistostoptheforceofanydirectblastbackdownthehose.
*Cleanhosesofspidersandalikeregularlybytakingthemdownandrunningwaterthroughthem.
4.Electrolytelevels(sulfuricacidsolution)ineachbatterymustbecheckedatleastonceperweek,therewillbeamarkeronthetransparentbatterycasingshowingtheupperandlowerallowedlevels
forproperoperation.
NOTE:Itrequiresaround1and1/2hourstoreadandtopup480individualcellswithdistilledwater,it'sdangerousbecauseoftheelectricalpowervoltageandsourcepresent,thebatteryhousing
requiresdesignwithsomeextraspacesotheupperandlowerelectrolytemarkerscanbeseeneasilyandeffectivelysafely.
5.Nonakedflameorsmokingorelectricalworktobewithin10metersofthebatterybankhousing.
6.Beforeopeningthebatterybankdoor"allflammablesorpossibleflammabletriggersmustbeenremovedfromthevicinity"
e.g.petrolcansemptyorfull,kerosene,solventcontainers,LPGgasbottles,lighters,matches,burnersorsolderers,candles,lamps(usingafullywaterprooftorchisagoodidea!),runningvehicles,
electricmotorsquadcopters,blacksmithingfirese.t.c..
7.Afteropeningthebatterybankdoor,thehousingmustbeleavedopenfor10minutespriortocommencinganyactionswithinit,nearit,oruponittocleartheexplosivehydrogengasbuildup
occurredfromits'charginganduse.
8. Thetemperatureshieldingfromsunlightbythreenoncontactingventilatedwallsets(See:"Ensuringbatteryservicelife")(lidswiththecornersslottedgroovedthrough1cmtoallowairflow)and
basiccontinuous20o Celsiusenvironmentofthebatteriesismuchthesameassealedbatteryenvironmentcontrol,excepttheinnermostwallsetaretotally/completelysealedsealedandventilationis
donebythetwotubesextendedtothetopoftheventilationtower(8Mhigh)!
9.Theinnerdoor/housingcovermustbefastenedtightnonmoving(norattleorlooseness)andsealed,butonemoreitemlocked!topreventtamperbychildren,andtheventilationtowerandits'
tubesmustnotbetamperableorclimbableeither!
10.Readthemanufacturerssulphuricacidsolutionpercentageinformationforthebatteriesandusethecorrectsolutionpercentage.
11.Useonlydistilledwatertotopupeachbatterycell.Youcaneasilymakeastillusingacleanunused20Lplasticdrumcanisterandaround10metersofplasticfishtanktubesealedintothepouring
holeofthe20Ldrum,byplacingthedrumfullofrainwaterinthesunandrunningthetubeuptorooflevelanddanglingtheremainderinacoiledballdownaroundapoleintheshade(donotallow
sunlighttogettothecollector)intoacleandrumneverusedforanythingexceptdistilledwater.
12.Onefinalactionneedstooccurasmaintenanceonfloodedwetcellleadacidbatteries.Aprocesscalled"equalizing"isrequiredtooccuraroundonceeverythreemonthsorasrecommendedby
themanufacturerforthemodelspecification.Equalizingisaprocessofliftingthebatteryvoltagetoheavystateofovervoltagedeliberatelytoexciteorreexcitethebatterieschemically.
Aneasywaytomakeaventilationsystemisthesameprincipleofputtingyourwindturbinehigher,theairhastendencytomovealittlefasterhigherinaltitude.Sealoneendofsomehosematerialinto
theinnerbatterybankcompartmentandtakeitslengthtothetopat8Mandbenditoverinahookshapewith5inchestotheendpointingdowntopreventrainenteringit.
Thensealasecondhoseintotheinnerbatterybankcompartmentandputitup5Mandbendtheendoverwith5inchespointingdown.
Thefasterairat8MwillhavethetendencytodrawtheairbyVenturieffectoutthehigherendhose.Tomakethisoperatebetter,findathickplasticwasherwithaninnerholehalfthediameterofthe
hoses'innerholediameterandglueitoverthetopendoftheshorterinputhose.Thiswillcauseittobemuchmorefavorabletoleaveoutbytheupperlonghoseend!
Theonlyothermethodistorunthetwotubes(oneinletoneoutletwithsmallcontinuousblowerextractorfanoutthere100metersawayalso)undergroundto100metersawayand
upathree/fourmetermast.(keeptheinletoutletorificepointsapartatleast1meter)
