CHAPTER 1

SaaS-Attack Strategy Study

The Platform Is the Business

INTRODUCTION
The rise of cloud computing in General and Software as a Service (SaaS) in particular, is causing the
application package industry to undergo the largest change in its history since the move to
Client/Server computing in the 1980’s.

Thirty years on, the customers are embracing the Internet and expressing a distinct preference for
the convenience of SaaS applications and cost effectiveness of the SaaS commercial proposition.

Given weakening customer demand for on-premises applications and strong demand for SaaS
applications, ISV’s that wish to grow with the market need to embrace the SaaS model and proceed
in business either as a dual-mode (Software + SaaS) vendor or as a pure-play SaaS vendor.

It is important to realize that the hosting of the ‘Same old Software’, as a Service (SoSaaS) does not
represent a move to SaaS. Hosting an application provides no significant benefits for either the
customer or the ISV. It is a model that was tried in the 1990’s and failed at relatively low numbers
of customers.

By comparison, SaaS is a vibrant new way of doing business, automatically, all over the world. In
addition to being a new way of delivering applications, SaaS also represents a whole new business
model for ISV’s.

The SaaS Strategy Study is specifically designed to guide ISV’s through the thought processes
required to move from the ‘As-Is’ to the ‘To-Be’ business(s).
The standard SaaS-Attack Strategy Study incorporates both a commercial study and a technical
study.

SAAS STRATEGY STUDY

The proposed study lasts for 10 days (as standard) and is arranged as follows:

1. Commercial Study (5 days).

a. Initial Commercial Fact Find (Financials)
b. Appreciation of ‘As-Is’ (Software license) Business Model
c. Identification of possible new market(s)
d. Development of ‘To-Be’ (Software + Service) Business model
2. Technical Study (5 days).
a. Survey existing application architecture
b. Survey existing implementation
c. Survey existing functionality
d. Identify functionality required for future market(s)
e. Propose outline SaaS application
f. Develop high-level technical roadmap

(The customer is welcome to amend the agenda, particularly to address specific points of interest).

The SaaS strategy deliverable is a SaaS Strategy Report designed to enable ISV’s to exploit the
growing SaaS market opportunity, either as a dual-mode vendor or a pure-play SaaS vendor.

PRICING
The SaaS Strategy Report service is priced as follows:

1. 10 on-site working days @ £650 per day (+ Per Diem expenses) = £6,500 (Ex VAT).
2. 2 days (off-site) report writing – (No Charge).

INVOICING
The SaaS Strategy Report service is invoiced as follows:

3. 50% invoiced on receipt of purchase order.

4. 50% invoiced on delivery of the SaaS Strategy Report report.

NEXT STEPS
Having considered the findings of the study, the ISV management will have a usable SaaS Strategy
and be in a good position to make an informed Go/No-Go decision on embracing the SaaS model.

Should the decision to go-ahead be made, the ISV (at its sole discretion), may contract SaaS-Attack
(and its ecosystem of SaaS partners) to help design, develop test and launch the new SaaS
application and business as quickly and as cost-efficiently as possible.
