Instructions to the Candidates:

Answer any one full question from each unit
Any data missing can be assumed suitably
UNIT - I

1. a) Explain the importance of mathematical model in analysis of dynamic (8)

problems.
b) Calculate the physical characteristics of the system shown in Fig.1b. Assume (12)
damping ratio as 10% of critical damping. If the system is subjected to an
initial displacement of 25mm and an initial velocoity of 50mm/sec, calculate
the maximum amplitude, maximum acceleration and maximum velocity.
What is the displacement at t=10 secs? Sketch Response.

2. a) Define logarithmic decrement and obtain an expression for damping ratio in (8)
terms of logarithmic decrement.
b) A water tank is as shown in the Fig.2b. The column is made by Reinforced (12)
concrete with outer diameter = 4000mm. The thickness of walls is 400mm.
The tank weighs 6000kN with water. Grade o' concrete = M30. Calculate
the physical characteristics of the system. Calculate the maximum
amplitude, maximum velocity and maximum acceleration, if there is an initial
displacement of 100mm transversely given at top. Consider the effect of the
weight of the column in the calculations using me = 33 x mass of column.

UNIT - II
3. a) Derive an expression for frequency ratio so that the transmissibility ratio is (8)
maximum for a given damping ratio.
b) Obtain the expression for DLF)max due to a rectangular pulse of duration td (12)
and magnitude F0, in an undamped SDF system.
4. a) A rigid frame shown in Fig . 4a supports a rotating machine exerting a (10)
horizontal dynamic force at girder level . The machine has a motor running
at 500rpm and has an unbalanced mass of SOON at eccentricity of 0.3m.
Adopting a damping ratio of 5% of critical, determine the steady state
amplitude and the dynamic force at the girder level . Also, draw BMD for the
columns . Grade of concrete is M30 and the column is 400mm square.

magnitude F0, at t=O for an undamped SDF system during loading phase
only.
UNIT - III
5. a) A simply supported beam is shown in Fig.5a. The beam can be assumed to (12)
be weightless. Calculate the fundamental frequency by Rayleigh's and
Dunkerley's method.
