A
LETTER FROM THE TE

September 23 marks the beginning of a new season: beloved autumn. The

weather and landscape are hard to beat in Wisconsin, and we could go on
and on about our favorite things. But we wont, as Edgar Albert Guest said
it best in his poem:
Its September
Its September, and the orchards are afire with red and gold,
And the nights with dew are heavy, and the mornings sharp with cold;
Now the gardens at its gayest with the salvia blazing red
And the good old-fashioned asters laughing at us from their bed;
Once again in shoes and stockings are the childrens little feet,
And the dog now does his snoozing on the bright side of the street.

Its September, and the cornstalks are as high as they will go,
And the red cheeks of the apples everywhere begin to show;
Now the suppers scarcely over ere the darkness settles down
And the moon looms big and yellow at the edges of the town;
Oh, its good to see the children, when their little prayers are said,
Duck beneath the patchwork covers when they tumble into bed.
Its September, and a calmness and a sweetness seem to fall
Over everything thats living, just as though it hears the call
Of Old Winter, trudging slowly, with his pack of ice and snow,
In the distance over yonder, and it somehow seems as though
Every tiny little blossom wants to look its very best
When the frost shall bite its petals and it droops away to rest.

Its September! Its the fullness and the ripeness of the year;
All the work of earth is finished, or the final tasks are near,
But there is no doleful wailing; every living thing that grows,
For the end that is approaching wears the finest garb it knows.
And I pray that I may proudly hold my head up high and smile
When I come to my September in the golden afterwhile.
We hope you enjoy the reprieve of the summer heat and the crisp air as
much as we do!

Are you
suffering from
low thyroid
symptoms but
your lab results
are normal?
Check out Thyroflex testing
.......................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP

n the years past, when treating thyroid disease doctors traditionally looked at your symptoms and your reflexes to help dose
your medication to what they felt normal thyroid function
should be. The amount of thyroid given then, on average, was three
times higher than seen today. Patients who took natural desiccated
thyroid medication (Armour Thyroid) before 1970 felt more motivated, more energetic and noticed that overall they felt better! In the
1970s, there was a change in thyroid treatment with the introduction of synthetic thyroid hormones (Synthroid) and looking at a
blood test result called the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) for
the basis of diagnosing the condition of thyroid disease.
TSH is often the wrong marker for patients who have low thyroid
output; it plays a role, but it has created a new group of patients
who are categorized into the subclinical hypothyroid group. This
is a very large group of patients that repeatedly tell their doctors
or nurse practitioners, How can my thyroid test results be normal
when I have all of these symptoms of low thyroid? Im cold all the
time, tired, constipated, my hair is falling out, my sex drive is low,
I am gaining weight, Im depressed and my mood changes easily.
When their TSH is normal, they are told to take an antidepressant
or other drug, go on a diet, exercise more, lessen their stress or take
more time off. Their symptoms are then ignored and their thyroid
condition is left untreated. The diagnosis using only one blood test
10

Natures Pathways | September 2015

Doing a Thyroflex test is

especially useful in those cases
in which the TSH is paradoxically
low even though the patient
has symptoms of low thyroid.
(TSH) does not work for some patients. If your thyroid is slightly
off, not only does it play havoc with your other hormones, but it can
lead to a whole array of other long-term illnesses, such as psychiatric syndromes, neurological problems, cognitive deficits, skeletal
syndromes, diabetes, heart disorders, pregnancy complications,
insomnia and double the chance of Alzheimers.
In 1971, Dr. R.I.S. Bayliss, a famous European endocrinologist, stated the following after many decades of treating thyroid
conditions: I am often asked how the correct dose of thyroxine
(thyroid hormone) is determined. The answer is clinically by
the patients pulse rate, his sense of well-being, the texture of his
skin, his tolerance of cold, his bowel function, and the speed with
which his deep tendon reflexes relax. Is thyroid not the hormone
www.naturespathways.com

capable of raising the constitution and well-being of the patient?

Anyone can be brought up to the top of their constitutional capabilities when tested adequately for thyroid hormone. This would
only be done by clinical assessment, not blood tests; there is no
relation between the signs and symptoms of low thyroid disease,
the TSH, or the other related blood tests.

Enter the Thyroflex test

In medical school all providers are taught that reflexes speed

up and slow down according to thyroid function. Checking the
Achilles (ankle) reflex is still accepted and used by mainstream
medicine today as an indicator of thyroid function. Recently a
company decided to tackle the question of how do you measure
thyroid function best and they developed a testing device called
the Thyroflex. The Thyroflex instrument is a reflex hammer
connected to a laptop computer, which measures reflex time in
milliseconds. They do not routinely use the Achilles tendon reflex.
Instead, they use the Brachio-Radialis muscle of the forearm, a
more convenient way to illicit the reflex while the patient is seated
in a comfortable chair. A delayed reflex time is the finding, which
indicates low thyroid function.
The Thyroflex measures the speed of the neurotransmitters and the reflex speed and integrates that information into a
resting metabolic rate along with the symptoms, and prints out
the results. This gives you and your provider detailed information
for treatment that is accurate, fast and easy to interpret in real
time. It is noninvasive, inexpensive and is instantly available. The
researchers found excellent correlation between reflex time and
thyroid function as measured by basal metabolic rate in patients
before and after treatment with natural thyroid. Their study found
a Predictive Value of a Positive Test = 0.95 and a Predictive Value
of a Negative Test = 0.017, which is very good.
We are proud to be the first wellness center in Wisconsin
providing the noninvasive, FDA-approved Thyroflex test, which
really represents the best modern medicine has to offer while at
the same time validating the original knowledge of early thyroid
clinical practice. Doing a Thyroflex test is especially useful in
those cases in which the TSH is paradoxically low even though the
patient has symptoms of low thyroid. Note: a low TSH indicates
high thyroid function, while a high TSH indicates low thyroid
function. This is confusing to many patients.
Our approach to diagnosis of low thyroid uses a questionnaire,
blood tests and a physical examination and the offer of measurement of reflex time with the Thyroflex machine. If warranted, a
trial of low dose thyroid may be offered and is very safe and often
very effective. If you have been told your thyroid lab results are
normal but you dont feel normal, check into Thyroflex testing
soon!

Healthy in
spirit: Its
not
too late!
.........................................................
By Rev. April Kain-Breese

f your summer has not lived up to your expectations, you

may be feeling a bit glum. But its not too late to salvage your
summertime dreams! Did you dream of a week on the shore
of Lake Superior? Maybe you can still manage a weekend on Lake
Michigan. Did you dream of visiting relatives in another state?
Maybe you can set up a series of Skype sessions with them
maybe even share a special meal together, but at a distance. Did
you dream of becoming fit in twelve weeks? You still have twelve
weeks! OK, you get my drift.
With September we begin another new year, dont we? (I think
there are at least three new years in the typical twelve months,
marked by January 1, Memorial Day and Labor Day.) So, as this
particular new year begins, we can carry forward our dreams and
transform them to fit our circumstances. This is a happy reminder
that its not too late to celebrate summer, and its not too late for
other things either.

Its not too late to make new friends, to overcome addiction,

or to mend a broken relationship. Its not too late to find a new
love, to make a difference in this world or to learn to love yourself
more. Its not too late to discover (or rediscover) who you really
are! Its not too late to infuse your life with inspiration and hope.
You are here to be a blessing to the world. Every thought you
hold, every word you speak, every action you take is an opportunity
to express your highest and best self. Your authentic life is not about
material possessions or lack thereof. Your authentic life is about
meaningful connection, starting with your internal connection.
Are you plugged in to your higher self? Do you realize and
recognize that part of you? How often do you spend time in that
state of awareness? There is more to you than you may know!
Find that place and make yourself at home there. Its a place where
you feel calm, confident and capable. Its a place where you know
that you are OK, and that you can be in the world without being

victimized by it. This place of inner peace does exist within you.
If you need help finding it, spend time with people who have
what you want people who live authentically, who have this
inner strength and resilience. Ask them how they think, how they

offers frequent opportunities to grow spiritually, a community
that honors and respects you and your spiritual journey without

transforming. And its not too late!

Things to
do before
bringing
a new cat
home
...............................................

ats and dogs are the two most popular types of pets in
the country, and while dogs have been dubbed mans best
friend, cat owners are quite vocal when expressing their
love for their feline friends.
Those looking for a cat may not have to look far. The ASPCA
says approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal
shelters nationwide every year, and roughly 3.4 million of those
are cats. An area shelter is an ideal place to find a new pet for those
thinking of getting their first cat or adding to the pets already in
the household. Cats can be purchased from pet stores, but they
also may be available via friends or family members who have
recently welcomed a new litter.
Before bringing your cat home, it is best to make sure you and
members of your household are prepared to welcome a furry
feline friend into your home.

IS EVERYONE READY FOR THE RESPONSIBILITY? Pets are

a big responsibility, and all members of the household should be

ready and willing to pitch in and care for pets. Divide duties based
on age and physical ability. If a member of the family doesnt
support the decision to get a cat, this might not be the right time
to do so.
FIND THE RIGHT MATCH IN A PET. Temperament can play a

role in how well a cat fits in with your family. A cat that is fearful
and skittish may not be the best match for a family with young,

STOCK UP ON YOUR SUPPLIES. Cats will need various pet

Exercising

ive right in. Exercising in water is low to no impact, taking

weight off painful joints and encouraging a larger range
of motion than you might attain on land. Water exercise
provides natural resistance. Warm pool water also soothes aching
joints.
If you have shoulder problems, you might want to avoid the
overhead motions of some swim strokes, but other good alternatives exist. Try running in place in the pool. You can do this
in chest-high water or in the deep end, using a special buoyancy
harness to keep you afloat.
For those with knee and hip pain, use a stationary bike or ride

for people whose joint pain is primarily in their lower bodies.

Ellipticals are great machines that produce minimal impact
on joints while providing a good cardiovascular workout. Thats
because they use hydraulics and the impact is primarily absorbed
by the machine instead of the joints.
Try yoga for stretching and to improve flexibility, range-ofmotion and balance. A recent University of Pennsylvania study
showed reductions in pain and disability from knee osteoarthritis in a group of overweight people, aged 50 and up, who took
90-minute yoga classes weekly for eight weeks.
Apply heat before exercise as it relaxes muscles and joints,
as well as eases pain. After physical activity, ice joints to reduce
swelling.
Avoid exercising an actively inflamed joint, recent joint replacement, or any kind of damage that might cause physical instability.
Do not use heavy weights and avoid extending, flexing and
locking out any joint to its maximum position.
If you feel sharp pain in a joint or elsewhere while exercising,
stop. Muscle fatigue is common during exercise; however, muscle
pain due to conditioning begins after exercising and wears off
gradually.

Prevention avoid overuse!

Too many of us perform one exercise movement over and over

again. This can injure the muscles, joints and bones involved in
that activity and lead to tendonitis, shin splints, rotator cuff injuries and pain. Choosing a well-rounded fitness plan is best by

mixing up exercises and types of cardio.
Pressure to keep up in a class setting can also cause you harm.
You might push yourself beyond your physical capabilities or
injure yourself because you havent learned correct form. In addition, overuse injuries may come from underlying biomechanical
problems (such as imbalances caused by flat feet or weak muscles)
or from using incorrect equipment or poor training techniques.
Its important to identify what caused the problem and correct it
for the future.
NOTE: Using a joint support formula can really help relieve
sore joints, reduce inflammation and repair connective tissue.

Ten reasons to
try floatation
therapy
......................................................................
By Christine Vander Bloomen

1. YOU WANT TO COMBINE FLOATING WITH MASSAGE.

Getting a float before you get a massage warms and relaxes your
muscles so your tight spots are more easily broken up by the time
you get your massage. You get a better massage when you float
first.
2. YOU WANT TO RECOVER FROM WORKOUTS FASTER.

Research has shown that floating decreases cortisol levels and

increases the production of endorphins, the bodys natural pain
killers. Total relaxation promotes blood circulation and muscle
growth. The Epsom salt solution reduces lactic acid buildup,
maximizing the benefits of your workout.
3. YOU WANT TO HAVE AN OUT-OF-BODY EXPERIENCE.

They can happen when you float, but generally not in one of your
first floats. Some people claim to have these and others not. It just
goes to prove how the experience is different from one person to
the next.

4. YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOURE FLOATING IN OUTER

SPACE. There is no place like a floatation tank that lets you escape

the confines of gravity without leaving orbit and flying into space.
Floating in a float tank is a much safer journey than flying to the
moon.
5. YOURE PREGNANT. Floating offers a unique glimpse into

what it is like to float in the womb. Floating while pregnant gives

mother and baby extra special quality time. Floating helps you
relax and connect with your unborn baby.
6. YOU WANT TO DELVE INTO DEEPER LEVELS OF YOUR
SUBCONSCIOUS. Floating helps peel back the layers so you

can take a peek at what is underneath your subconscious. Once

there, you can take a tour of your own subconscious and learn
more about what makes you uniquely you. When you float your
brain becomes very plastic. In this state your brain is more open
to suggestions.
7. YOU HAVE FIBROMYALGIA. Swedish study results provided

compelling evidence that floatation rest can greatly improve

the lives of people with fibromyalgia by significantly decreasing
their pain, muscle tension, anxiety and stress. It also significantly
increased freedom of movement, energy, mood and quality of
sleep.
8. YOU WANT TO OVERCOME ADDICTIONS. Research

shows that this sensory deprivation addiction treatment stimulates right/left brain patterns by lowering brain wave frequency,
which can give a person a chance to have mental clarity, increase
creativity, solve problems, reflect objectivity, heighten visualizations, alertness, aid meditation, heighten awareness and accelerate
learning.
www.naturespathways.com

9. ALL YOUR FRIENDS ARE DOING IT. Floating is a growing

trend and an all natural one at that. Most float centers have multiple floatation units available so you can feel free to schedule an
appointment for more than just yourself.

tate and when you float are exactly the same thing. Floating can
take you there faster and leave you in that peaceful state longer
because floatation tanks are designed to block out all external
stimuli so you wont be distracted by the outside world.

Yoga for
soccer
........................................
By Crystal M Hill, E-RYT

occer is on many minds these days. Whether playing it,

watching a friend/family member play it or following
the World Cup, its an exciting time of the year! It is a
versatile sport too! Have you ever considered how soccer is
like yoga? It can be enjoyed indoors or out, any age can participate and benefit, it brings people together, it requires focus
and mindfulness, and it improves health and well-being.
Yoga is a fantastic partner activity to soccer as well! Soccer
is a sport in which most players are dominant in one leg,
resulting in significant asymmetries in their bodies. Most
soccer athletes are 80 percent dominant in one leg! Much
time is spent planting and holding ground with one leg, using
gluteal muscles and hamstrings. The majority of kicking is
done with the other leg, using hip flexors and quadriceps.
Yoga can provide balance and symmetry to the body to
correct the issues caused to hips and spine by this lopsided
sport. Yoga also improves flexibility, range of motion and
endurance!
These yoga postures will target the lower body muscles
primarily the hip flexors and hamstrings to improve
flexibility. For the Lunge and Warrior postures, hold the
pose longer when the dominant leg is back to help correct
imbalances.

Nashs
Magical

By Kathi Bloy

ash Riemer is an adorable three-year-old any parent

would be proud of. But hes never said Mama, Daddy
or I love you to Tammy and Terry Riemer. Undoubtedly he would if he could, but Nash suffers from autism and is
completely nonverbal.
His parents met in Tennessee where Terry, a Kewaunee native,
was an iron worker for C.R. Meyer, Oshkosh. Nash was born
in Knoxville and the family moved to New Franken, in Brown
County, before he was a month old. Immediately after his birth,
the Riemers were told that Nash had a hole in his heart and would
require surgery. He had it rough, Tammy said, having heart
surgery at eight months.
I started noticing other things when he was about 18 months
old, she said. You could call Nashs name and he wouldnt really
look at you. He didnt like to be held, but we wondered if that was
because hed been in doctors offices every week from birth until
his heart surgery at eight months. Since then hes been diagnosed
with autism.
His heart is fine now, but Nash needs autism therapy 30-40
hours a week that costs $30 per hour. Thats $900 to $1,200 a week,
an amount the family budget cant cover, especially with Tammy
working part-time at Annas Healthcare in order to devote herself
to Nashs care.
She applied to the state for assistance and found it would take
four months before shed know if Nash was approved. If he was,
he would be put on a nine-month waiting list, stretching the time
before therapy could begin to 13 months. He cant wait a year for
therapy, Tammy said.
When the couple moved from Tennessee, she said, I joined a
golf league to make friends. She and one of those friends, Ann
Perrizo, decided to hold a golf outing to raise funds for Nashs
treatment. When they began putting the event together, they
22

discovered businesses werent willing to donate much unless the

fundraiser had 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Individuals cant
qualify, so the friends were referred to Community Benefit Tree
(CBT) in Kaukauna, a non-profit designed to assist with fundraising during a medical crisis.
After meeting with Heidi Frederickson, executive director
of CBT, Perrizo said, We will probably more than double the
amount well raise with Heidis suggestions. We didnt realize how
many things could be done at a golf outing fundraiser.
The golf outing, open to the public, is set for Saturday, Sept.
19 at Royal Scot Golf Course in New Franken. Golfing starts at
2:30 p.m. and pre-registered four-person teams will pay $40 per
person, which includes a meal, a cart and balls. Without preregistration, the cost is $45. Dinner, served at 4 p.m., costs $10
for those who dont wish to golf. With activities on every hole,
there also are opportunities to win prizes like a golf package and
an autographed helmet donated by the Packers.
CBT takes care of things like raffle tickets and all the accessory equipment, like money aprons and other things, Perrizo
said. They train us and help us organize and make sure we have
a good grasp of what we need to do when we get there. Heidi
introduced us to 5 or 6 games that wed never heard of, plus other
money-making activities.
We really liked her because she is more like a Good Samaritan
to us than just a person running her business. Both Tammy and

Coconut oil is
good for you.
Who
knew?
....................................................................
By Steve Lankford

rganic virgin coconut oil is now

considered by many nutritionists as one of the healthiest, most
versatile unprocessed dietary oils in the
world. Coconut oil that is made from
organically grown coconuts is an excellent cooking oil. It contains medium chain
triglycerides (MCTs) that the body metabolizes quickly, converting the fats to energy
rather than storing them as fat. Coconut oil
is a stable, healthy saturated fat that does
not elevate bad (LDL) cholesterol. This is a
myth that still exists in the minds of many.

Health benefits of coconut oil

Coconut oil has been used as cooking oil

for thousands of years, and is still a staple
in the diets of many people living in tropical areas today. It was once popular here
in the United States as well, until shortages of imported oils during World War II
created the need to promote local oils like
soybean and corn oil. Soon after that, polyunsaturated fats became the norm in this
country; and with it came a rise in obesity,
higher cholesterol levels, and degenerative
diseases related to aging and inflammation.

Coconut oil has been shown to reduce

the symptoms of digestive disorders,
support overall immune function, and
help prevent bacterial, viral and fungal
infections. Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid
(50-55 percent), capric acid and caprylic
acid. These are super fatty acids with
strong antimicrobial properties. People
who consistently use coconut oil report
changes in their ability to go without eating
for several hours without experiencing the
effects of hypoglycemia.

coconut oil is a staple, showed that metabolic rates of people living there were
25 percent higher than in comparable
test subjects living in the United States.
Increased metabolic rate is a key to healthy
weight management and could account
for the leanness of people living in areas
where coconut oil is consumed on a daily
basis. The study further observed that local
women displayed none of the symptoms
commonly associated with menopause.

Good fat versus bad fat

Research done in the 1950s concluded

that all fat was bad! Today, many people
still equate fat with weight gain, clogged
arteries and high blood pressure. Early
researchers failed to distinguish between

saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. They assumed at the time,

that all fats (including coconut oil) were
unhealthy because they raised serum
cholesterol levels.
In revisiting those studies, researchers
found that hydrogenated (refined) coconut
oil had been used. All hydrogenated oils
produce higher serum cholesterol levels,
and contribute to greater oxidation and
free radicals in the body. In fact, further
research has shown that excess amounts
of trans fatty acids (found in hydrogenated
vegetable oils) increase the risk of degenerative diseases and other age-related
maladies.

Benefits of organic
coconut oil

Antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal

properties

Abundant in medium chain fatty acids

(aid weight loss and energy)

Helps to improve HDL and LDL

cholesterol ratios
Shown to support healthy thyroid
function
May help to promote proper weight
management
Helps to reduce hypoglycemic cravings
May improve symptoms of digestive
disorders
Known to promote smooth, supple skin

Withstands wide heat ranges without

oxidation

Now we know that certain fats actually

help to prevent those conditions and are
essential to good health. Coconut oil can
be added to that list. Other beneficial fats
include olive oil, flax oil and fish oil. Be
sure to include a variety of healthy fats
and make a concerted effort to reduce
your consumption of omega-6 fats, which
include all of your grain and seed oils.
If you would like to learn more about
coconut oil, listen to my interview with 5th
generation master herbalist Dean Morris
at HealthQuestPodcast.com. You will also

including fish oil, krill oil and oregano oil.

how the right oils can have a tremendous
beneficial impact on your health.

Womenowned
success
...........................................
By Chelsie Towns

isconsin ranks 40th in the

nation for women-owned businesses, and while our state
has made leaps and bounds, growing
187 percent since the most recent recession, our growth is actually slower than
most other states. Woman entrepreneurs
face a number of challenges including
significantly less investor interest and

26

Natures Pathways | September 2015

opportunity, lack of support from other

woman business owners, and balancing
children and home life with work.
On the other hand, women-owned businesses are diversifying, meaning there is
no longer a stereotypical woman-owned
business. Women are branching out and
using their talents and knowhow to create
jobs for themselves, opportunities for
others and fill niches wherever they see a
need for their time and talent.
Northeast Wisconsin is home to a
number of women-owned businesses and
nonprofits from unique retail shops to
bakeries. Unfortunately, as any business
owner knows, marketing, commercial or
office space, childcare, and other costs can
be daunting for new business owners. The
startup process can be confusing to navigate and expensive, making long-term
success difficult for a lot of women.
One grass roots collective in the Fox
Valley is looking to change this stumbling point for women entrepreneurs. Fox
Cities Women in Business, while still in
its infancy, aims to offer a collaboration
for women business owners. The website
is currently under construction but will
include a directory of woman-owned businesses in the Fox Valley and information for
women seeking to bolster or begin a new
business. Affordable flex office, meeting and

classroom space will soon be available for

use in Downtown Neenah, where business
owners will have access to computers, printers, Internet and more, including classes on
business startup and management, as well
as networking and promotional events. This
business incubator concept is also run by
three women business owners who understand the struggles and confusion involved
in entrepreneurialism. Watch the Fox Cities
Women in Business Facebook page for
more information.
If you would like to support women run
businesses in our area, consider coming to
the fall Belly, Birth and Beyond Expo on
Oct. 18 at the Grand Meridian in Appleton. Deux La La Events, the business
behind the expo, is owned and operated by
three local mothers and the event is largely
comprised of women-owned businesses
with a lot to offer our community!

Orthopedic & Spine Therapy

Wow is a small word, but it packs a punch. It exemplifies all one

needs to say in three letters, but its impact is much bigger. Its
universal, and its a declaration of something great. Orthopedic &
Spine Therapy believes in it to an extent that highlights exactly how
they feel about running their business theyve even adopted it
within their value statement.
we are more than a physical therapy company that provides
quality patient care. Everything we do is based on a value system
that is shared and exemplified by each team member. The driving
principle behind all our actions is the WOW Philosophy.
It is working. Orthopedic & Spine Therapy is celebrating its 25th
birthday on Sept. 4. Owner Steve Barnett couldnt be prouder and
he owes his success in the physical therapy field to his co-workers
and his mother.
(In college), my mom gave me a call and said, Im going to a
physical therapist and I think it may be something you would like
to do, he remembers. Like any dutiful son I did some research,
transferred to Marquette, and completed my education in physical
therapy. My initial premise of going into physical therapy was focusing on sports medicine.
In the beginning, even Steve didnt know just how much Orthopedic & Spine Therapy would encompass. While working with
athletes is undoubtedly a part of it, theres so much more.

An all-encompassing
physical therapy

When I started the company, our main emphasis was treating

patients with spine, TMJ and headache disorders, Steve says. For
four years prior to the start of the company, my focus deviated from
sports medicine to treatment of the spine.

The business at that time was known as Spine Therapy Center.

Now, the therapists at Orthopedic & Spine Therapy see a large
number of spine-related patients about 50% of the patient caseload but also those experiencing acute or chronic pain from head
to toe, such as post-op surgeries, plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, etc.
Fairly new to Orthopedic & Spine Therapy is their Pelvic Physical
Therapy division, previously referred to as Womens Health, though
expanded to serve both women and men, according to Steve. Issues
in men and women that fall under pelvic health are conditions such
as incontinence, sexual performance/dysfunction, and past surgical histories. Additionally, womens pelvic health encompasses both
pregnancy and postpartum care.
We presently have seven physical therapists in the company
who specialize in this divison, and we are planning for further
growth in the future, he says.
The physical therapists generally treat patients one-on-one
for 40 minutes, and are able to pack both quality treatment and
conversation into the mix. In fact, thats Steves favorite part.
I love treating patients. I still always gravitate toward the treatment room and thats how I spend most of my time. I hope they
learn from me as much as I learn from them.
I receive my fishing and hunting tips, book recommendations,
and cooking tips from them, he laughs. Its that opportunity to
communicate and develop a relationship that I love.
Orthopedic & Spine Therapys value of education allows the
company to stand out as a quality and highly knowledgeable business in the field. Therapists are continually learning new evaluation
and treatment techniques, and through their ability to conduct a
thorough evaluation, are able to determine the patients areas of
restriction. They are then able to offer and utilize different treatment techniques for patients.

Through time and all the coursework weve taken, were blessed with
pretty big toolboxes to address the areas of restriction in our patients,
Steve says.

A toolbox for treatment

Toolbox is a word Steve uses often when discussing all Orthopedic &
Spine Therapy has to offer, and it makes sense as there are a variety of
evaluation and treatment techniques (tools) at their disposal to use to
provide patients with the best experience possible.
We have a toolbox figuratively in the mind, he explains. Were quite
generous in regard to our continuing education allowance. We utilize a
lot of physical therapy and osteopathic evaluation and treatment techniques: myofascial release, manipulation, muscle energy techniques,
craniosacral therapy, to name a few. Those in themselves give us a lot
of tools.
In the past five years, everyone in the company has learned the dry
needling technique to help patients relieve pain from trigger points. Its a
technique that can be applied to many conditions, whether it be those with
spine-related problems, headaches, or shoulder, knee, hip injuries, etc.
While their raw knowledge, extreme attention to detail regarding
treatment and the techniques they utilize are highly important, their
ability to provide treatment and make the patient feel comfortable is high
on their list of values as well.
We sit down with patients and inform them of our findings regarding the evaluation, Steve says. We make sure that both therapist and
patient goals align. Were explicit with regard to what their plan of care
will entail.
Now at 16 locations (No. 17 is opening this month!) with companywide
numbers in the 80s, its a far cry from where Steve started out in Sept.
of 1990.
It was me and one other person, he says. We both shared in the
billing, vacuuming, and we did whatever we had to do to get the job
done.
Fast forward 25 years and Steve appreciates the moments that remind
him just how far the business has come. Recognizing patients who have
been with Orthopedic & Spine Therapy since the beginning and knowing
they are returning to see a therapist in the company makes him truly
proud.
I relish those moments where Im able to see a patient leave their
duration of treatment very well satisfied. When I get a
chance to see them out in the community
and they tell me they are doing great,
those are the moments that give me
Ashland
Poplar

goosebumps, he says.
Steve feels incredibly blessed, and
Minong
sees continued growth in Orthopedic & Spine Therapys future,
both at the current locations and
also potential new ones.
Ladysmith
We can control what we
do. And thats what we put our
stamp and emphasis on, Steve
says. We want people to leave
and think, Wow, that was a great
experience.

The WOW Philosophy

in action
Orthopedic & Spine Therapy is serious about treating
its patients the way they would want to be treated, and
they do so in a variety of ways. Outrageous customer
service, education and results are what drive the WOW
Philosophy. Below are the five divisions of Orthopedic

The
importance
of medical
history
forms

..................................................................
By Amanda Newhouse, LMT

hether youve had a massage before or not, one of the

first things you are asked to do is fill out a medical
history form. Why do we need to fill out such an extensive medical history form just to have a massage, you ask? Simply
put, it is for your safety! Since our circulatory system is one of the
major systems that massage affects, it is very important to know
a persons medical history and concerns. It allows the massage
therapist to distribute the appropriate massage techniques.
Depending on where you go, the length of the medical history
form can be short and sweet or a bit more in depth. Too often, I
see clients breeze right through this form and barely take a second
to read what it is truly asking them. Although to some it may
seem like a waste of time, these forms are created to ensure that a
massage will be safe for you (and your baby if you are expecting).
For example, asking someone if they have varicose veins, a
heart condition or high blood pressure and if they are currently
taking any medications is very beneficial for a massage therapist
to know. Someone with high blood pressure, or hypertension, has
excessive pressure in their arteries that is higher than it should
be. Massage therapy may likely increase circulation within the
blood vessels; however, relaxing strokes that are used in a Swedish
massage can help to encourage a lower blood pressure and the
stress that contributes to it. Someone with hypertension would
not be a good candidate for an aggressive deep tissue massage;
rather a slower relaxing stroke would be beneficial. Massage frees
tissue congestion by moving out old stagnant blood and flooding it with fresh new blood. An increase in blood circulation can
increase intra-vascular pressure. This is the reasoning behind a
massage therapists caution with a hypertensive client. Your therapist may ask for your physicians written consent.
It is also common for your therapist to ask about rashes or psoriasis.
www.naturespathways.com

These conditions are all precautions, meaning massage is still OK;

however, caution should be taken. For instance, massage directly on
a rash is not recommended and should be avoided; a therapist should
never massage a rash or skin that is directly weakened in any way
(i.e. a bruise or rash). Doing so may aggravate the condition, and in
some cases could potentially spread. Correctly answering questions
like this also informs the therapist about what types of oils and/or
lotions can be used during massage. For example, to prevent further
skin irritation, the oils/lotions may need to be unscented.
It is also very important to list any medications you are currently
taking to treat ailments or pain. One of the main reasons we take
medication is to numb or dull pain. If a therapist is unaware of your
pain issues and the medication you are on, the pressure applied
during the massage could be too deep, which in turn could cause
the therapist to inadvertently injure you further. Additionally, if a
person is under the influence of medication, they may not be able
to give accurate feedback on whether the pressure is too much or
even if the area being worked on is tender or not.
Trust me, I understand life is busy and the quicker we can get
through another boring form the better. Just know, if you forget
to mark something on the medical history form, please let your
therapist know as soon as you think of it. It truly is important in
the long run.

certified Nurturing the Mother Pregnancy massage therapist at

Sex, drugs
and (no) rock
and
roll
................................................................
By Howard J. Lubin, B.S., D.D.S.

rectile dysfunction (ED) is an

ever increasing problem. About 5
percent of men have ED by their
40th birthday, and 25 percent by age 65.
Low testosterone (T) causes far more
problems than a less than spectacular
bedroom performance. Testosterone has
a cornucopia of wonderful effects on the
body, including increased muscle mass,
healthy bones, less pain, better cognitive
ability, weight loss, lower Alzheimers risk,
lower cholesterol, better prostate health,
a healthier heart, less arthritis and of
course much better sex. The moral of the

story is that if your dipstick is limp, it is

a warning sign of more serious problems
with your body.

What really causes ED?

The primary reason is that men lose half of

their testosterone by age 50 and more than
2/3 of it by age 65. Diabetics are 5 times
more likely to have ED. Statin drugs such as
Lipitor, Crestor and Zocor are really good
at lowering cholesterol. The problem is that
your body needs cholesterol to make your
sex hormones, including testosterone. This
is just one of many great reasons to talk

with your doctor about quitting statins.

Toxins in the environment also
cause low T, including:
Cash register receipts contain BPA
(Bisphenol A), which screws with all
of your hormones, including T. If you
use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
and then handle your receipt, your BPA
dose is 5 times as much. Leave it at the
register!
Plastic water bottles. BPA leaches into
the water. BPA-free containers often
contain BPS, which is just as bad and is
absorbed much more easily through the
skin. Think of glass containers instead.
Cans. When you pop the top for Miller
time, the inside of the can contains
an epoxy that contains BPA. Avoid all
canned goods and look for glass bottles
whenever possible.
Teflon cookware contains a chemical
called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA),
which also causes cancer as well as
messing up your hormones. Cookware
should be ceramic, stainless steel or cast
iron.
Microwave popcorn bags are loaded
with PFOA. Avoid this with a hot air
popper or use a pot with coconut oil.
Plastic wrap contains BPA. Again, try to
use glass containers with a lid instead.
Shampoo and cologne contain phthalates that lower T and cause cancer. Use
phthalate free shampoo purchased at
your local health food store. Try essential oils (lavender, sweet orange) instead
of cologne.

How to treat ED

1. Penis pills such as Viagra and Cialis

increase blood flow down there,

giving you a firmer erection. The side
effects include headaches, backaches,
skin cancer (melanoma), hearing
loss, prostate cancer and blindness.
Sometimes the erection will last
over 4 hours and must be surgically
drained in the E a painful and
possibly disfiguring process.
2. Hormone replacement with patches,
shots or creams. If you decide to use
this route, try bioidentical hormones
(not manmade). The synthetic
manmade hormones have been
linked to heart attacks and strokes.
You will need blood tests to get your T
level in the range of 300-1,200 ng/dl.
3. Food: oysters, broccoli, garlic,
bananas, Brazil nuts and eggs
naturally raise testosterone levels.
4. Supplements: There are at least 13
herbs and vitamins I know of that
will boost sexual function. Two
specific supplements are combined
to form poor mans Viagra (if youre
interested, call for details). A study of
50 men with mild to moderate ED in
2008 found that this combination was
100 percent effective at one month.
The group had double the amount of
intercourse at the end of the month.

They were one very happy group

of guys! Herbs have a self- limiting
feature, which means that they will
raise your T level but not overly boost
it. This means that blood tests are very
rarely needed to treat ED.

What about women?

Vaginal dryness is a major problem after

menopause. The drug Premarin is often
used to treat hot flashes and vaginal desert
conditions. I bet that women would think
twice about using the drug if they knew it
was made from the urine of pregnant horses!
Besides, zinc supplementation usually
relieves the dryness problem. You must be
careful about the dosage and frequency of
popping zinc tablets. Too much zinc leads
to lots of stomach problems and enough gas
to inflate the Goodyear blimp.
Women can also suffer from low T. The
major difference from men is that women
only need about 1/10 as much testosterone. This is then converted to estrogen
and other sex hormones and relieves hot
flashes. It also increases libido in women
and leads to more and more satisfying sex.
A word of caution: The drug Addyi
just recently began its marketing push as
female Viagra. The truth is that it failed
miserably in 9 out of 10 women who tried it.
Fifteen percent of the women dropped the
drug cold turkey due to nausea, dizziness

and low blood pressure. Add in the risk of

cancer and this drug is a definite loser.
What is the best way to treat sexual
problems?
Both men and women can have excellent results from natural treatments. This
avoids all the side effects of the medications, avoids blood tests in most cases and
is less expensive than traditional treatments. Holistic treatments also improve
your overall health and make you happier,
hornier and free you from the embarrassing and endless visits to the doctor for
your treatment.

to pain or other problems over time.
While almost anyone can benefit from
work on the muscles surrounding the jaw,
some clients I work with have chronic jaw
tension, or even experience temporomadibular joint (TMJ) disorder. In one sense,
TMJ is most commonly associated with
teeth grinding, especially during sleep.
However, jaw tension can also be associated with headaches and neck stiffness and
pain.
Individuals with nagging jaw tension
often find themselves at odds about what
to do about it. Should they take a muscle
relaxer, headache medicine, or put ice on
it? Often times, they feel the tension and
register it at a conscious level, but are
unable to get themselves to stop clenching (in the words of one client). It is a
frustrating problem indeed.
Based on my experience, jaw tension
is an involuntary holding pattern that
occurs in the muscles of the jaw, usually
in response to chronic stress. There are
several acupressure points that I work
systematically above the jaw and at the
TMJ to alert the soft tissue of the jaw to the
fact that it is holding and nudge the stuck
energy at these points along in order to
relax the tension. Often times, clients are

surprised at how tender these points are
when they are worked, and at how immediate the relief is as the points are held and
the tissue begins to release.

What do you
know about
psoriasis?
...............................................................
By Peter Katz, MD

ugust was psoriasis awareness month, and although its

September and kids have headed back to school, we will
hopefully have a couple more weekends that people will
flock to the pools and beaches; however, many with psoriasis will
hesitate because of misperceptions about their skin condition. My
hope is that raising awareness can help to change that.
First of all, lets set the record straight. Psoriasis is not caused
by poor hygiene, is not contagious and there is no risk of coming
into contact with someone with psoriasis. While there are many
factors that may play in to the triggering of psoriasis, and there are
exacerbating factors such as stress, primarily psoriasis is genetically predetermined. Psoriasis can have a significant psychosocial impact, and increasing public knowledge can help us better
understand the struggles that some affected individuals face.
Two to four percent of the population is affected by psoriasis,
which can occur at any age, but there are two peak incidences
in the late teens and in the late 50s. Once a person is affected by
psoriasis, although it can wax and wane in severity over time, that
person will likely be affected for life.
Plaque psoriasis is the most common form, presenting as pink
to red thin plaques with a chalky adherent white scale affecting
the elbows, knees, scalp and nails.
Guttate psoriasis presents as drop like patches of psoriasis
sometimes triggered by a strep infection, which should be treated
with antibiotics. Guttate psoriasis is not contagious but is brought
out by that persons genetic predisposition. Sometimes psoriasis
can affect only the hands and/or feet and the associated pustules
can be confused for infection and cause significant social stress.
In addition to the psychological impact that psoriasis may
have, there are other medical considerations. Up to 30 percent of
people with psoriasis are affected by psoriatic arthritis, which can
range from mild to moderate aches in the spine and other joints to
disabling arthritis causing destruction and deformity of the joints.
People with psoriasis are also at increased risk of heart disease,
www.naturespathways.com

Once a person is affected

by psoriasis, although it can

lymphoma and inflammatory bowel disease.
Fortunately there are many effective treatments for psoriasis and
new treatments continue to be developed. Newer therapies can
prevent permanent joint damage in patients with psoriatic arthritis and there is some early evidence that they may also reduce the
inflammation that leads to the increased risk of heart disease.
In many, limited psoriasis may respond to topical steroids,
vitamin D based and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory creams. UV
light therapy is helpful in many, and in the summer 10 minutes
of natural sun exposure multiple times weekly may be beneficial.
When the above is not effective, oral medications such as methotrexate, soriatane and cyclosporine can lead to 75 percent improvement or better; however, all require regular laboratory monitoring,
especially for long-term side effects on the liver and kidneys.
Injected medications such as Enbrel and Humira and IV remicade target TNF, a key player in inflammation and psoriasis.
Patients on these medications have a higher rate of skin clearance as well as treating arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease.
Stelara is a newer medication that targets a more specific and
recently discovered factor in psoriasis, IL-27. Stelara can improve
the skin, improve arthritis and is injected once every 3 months.
These medications require periodic monitoring as well and

Is there
gluten in my
medication?
..............................................................
By John Sowinski

o many products today are advertised as being gluten-free.

Some might consider it a marketing ploy and many have
written it off as the latest diet fad; however, many people feel
better by eliminating gluten from their diet. More importantly, if
you have celiac disease, eliminating gluten from your diet is lifesaving. Currently, eliminating gluten from your diet is the only
treatment available to celiac patients.
Gluten gets into food from 3 main sources, which include
wheat, barley and rye. While oats dont have gluten in them, many
times oats can get cross contaminated from these other sources of
gluten, so you have to be careful with oats too.
Gluten in medications is often overlooked. In the area of medications, potential sources of gluten contamination come primarily from the addition of the filler ingredients known as excipients
in the pharmaceutical industry. Those filler ingredients form the
bulk of the product and are designed to perform several functions.
In addition to providing bulk, they may be utilized as lubricants
for the powder, or as in the case of starches, absorb water, which
causes the tablet to swell and disintegrate. It is these starches
that provide the potential source of gluten contamination. These
fillers can be obtained from any starch source, but are primarily
derived from corn, potato and tapioca; however, they have also
been known to contain starch from wheat. The majority of the
manufacturers do not provide that information on the package or
the package insert.
There are other ways to find out this information though.
First, dont overlook your local pharmacist. When you get your
prescriptions locally, you can ask the pharmacist directly about
gluten in your medications. But if you like to investigate these
things yourself, there are websites that can help.
36

Natures Pathways | September 2015

Glutenfreedrugs.com

This website has links to many other useful websites as well, so this
is a great place to start. It contains links to sites that have glutenfree products both by therapeutic category and alphabetically. It
also has a link to a list of typical fillers that are in medications.

Celiaccentral.org/gluteninmeds/

This site has links to sites called Gluten in Medication Guide and
Gluten Free Drugs. It also has a site called The Rubins where it
has manufacturers information so you are able to contact them if
you cant find the information you need.

Dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/

At this site you can search for your medication and find the
specific companys product that you are taking. For example, if
you are taking Hydrochlorothiazide, it is made by many companies. You can find the exact companys product you are taking and
find out all of its ingredients.
If after all investigation you cant find the medication you need
in a form that is gluten-free, a compounding pharmacy can help.
When compounded the pharmacy can control what fillers are
used in your medication and thus assure that your medication is
gluten free.

suppress the immune system, putting people at a slightly higher

risk of infection or reactivation of latent infections like tuberculosis or hepatitis.
Medications are always being developed and Otezla is a new
oral option, which is not as rapid in clearing skin but it does not
cause immune suppression or require blood monitoring. Another
medication shown in studies to be effective is Cosentyx, out in just
the last few months.
Psoriasis can be a life-altering skin disease that can arise at any
age. Being sensitive to those that are affected, and understanding
their disease can help ease their struggle. For me as a dermatologist, helping clear the skin and preventing disabling arthritis in
these patients is one of the most rewarding things I do. Hopefully
as awareness continues to be raised and research continues, we
can work together to help all affected people lead a life free of the
burdens of psoriasis.

Tuning into
health
..........................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC

f we take a moment to consider the part music plays in our

lives, we will connect to the fact that our relationship with
music started as we were being soothed by lullabies as babies.
Whether it be from Mr. Rogers, Captain Kangaroo, Barney or
Sesame Street, as children we learned our ABCs, how to count,
tie our shoes and clean up all to music. There is music to celebrate
birthdays, holidays and most milestones in our lives like graduations, weddings, etc. Military marches build confidence, courage
and pride. Sporting events provide music to energize the fans and
create enthusiasm for the team. Most stores and shopping malls
play music to make the buying experience pleasant and to entice
customers to stay in the store. Medical, mental and dental health
professionals use music in their offices to help relax and calm
nervous patients.
The benefits of music on mind/body health have been known
for thousands of years and todays modern research supports the
ancient wisdom. Music will have you tapping your toes, clapping
your hands and cranking up the tunes.

Check out this list of benefits:

Music helps manage or minimize the effects of chronic pain,

migraine pain and surgery related pain. It reduces blood

pressure and increases the production of immune-boosting
hormones.
Music enhances higher brain functioning making reading,
math and memory work easier. Music improves concentration
and attention.
Music improves athletic performance as it helps lower feelings
of fatigue.
It improves motivation, workout endurance and post workout
recovery.
Music reduces muscle tension improving body movements
and coordination.
Music increases productivity.
Music calms, relaxes and reduces the production of cortisol (a
stress response hormone), which can help a person fall asleep
38

Natures Pathways | September 2015

and experience a higher quality of sleep.

Music positively influences a persons mood, reduces depres-

sion and comforts anxiety.

How does music have such an impact

on our health?

The research on music has shown that music affects our hormone
production levels. Serotonin, cortisol, oxytocin and norepinephrine are a few hormones that are impacted by music. Higher
serotonin levels help control memory power, learning, mood
and sleep. Music lowers the release of cortisol, which in turn
reduces stress levels for a person. Oxytocin is nicknamed the love
hormone. Research is being done on its role in social recognition,
bonding and anxiety. Oxytocin promotes feelings of contentment,
can reduce anxiety and creates a sense of calm and security. Music
allows for the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that connects
us with feelings of joy and exhilaration.
In addition, brain science has taught us that although an individuals brain functions are ongoing, many people tend to use
one side of their brain at a time as they engage in various tasks.
Left brained people are more logical and analytical. They tend to
look at the pieces that make up the whole. Right brained people
are intuitive, creative and look at information and the world as a
whole. Music affords us a unique opportunity in that it is an activity that involves the use of the whole brain and clearly using our
whole brain maximizes our potential.
Considering all the health benefits to music, you may be asking
yourself, what kind of music is best for me to be listening to? Interestingly, in searching for the answer to this question mixed results
were found. Some reports stated that happy music will elevate mood
and sad music lowers mood, yet another article noted that there
are perceived feelings and actual feelings when listening to music,
which means some people listening to sad music do not feel sad as
they can separate the perceived feeling referred to in the music from
their actual feelings. Therefore no internal sadness occurs. A study
of 144 adults and teens listening to grunge music all experienced
www.naturespathways.com

increases in hostility, sadness, tension and fatigue across the whole

group even for those who claimed to like the music.
What research does agree upon is the fact that what we listen
to has an impact on us. It is common knowledge that our experiences result in each of us developing our own personal preferences, styles and tastes. This is also the case with music. Whether
we like classical, country, rock, blues, pop, opera, heavy metal or
jazz your taking notice of your mood while listening to various
types and intensities of music is the best indicator of what we want
to be listening to. Nathan Feiles, a professional therapist, explains
that music can be an effective coping strategy. Listening to music
that promotes emotions we want to feel in any given moment is
the most helpful. If we are feeling lazy and unmotivated, maybe
something up tempo or energetic from our favorite music genre
may shift our mood. To get a better nights sleep setting the music
to something that has relaxed us in the past is our best bet.
As you begin the worthwhile self-exploration of what music is
best for you, here is a type of music you may not have heard of
and is worth exploring: bilateral music. Bilateral music is recorded
in a way that shifts the sound back and forth from one ear to the
other. Recall earlier in the article where music was described as a
whole brain activity. The back and forth movement of the sound
enhances our whole brain involvement whether it be the mental,
emotional or physical processing needed to enhance healing,
performance or relaxation.
The website, www.bilateralsound.com/what-is-bilateral-sound/,
will give you more information and also allows you to listen to
samples. In addition, a resource I use for ordering bilateral music
for my clients is Dr. David Grands website. He is the founder of
brainspotting, and has recorded a series of CDs that are very high
quality and include a wide range of types of music in a bilateral
format.

healthyFINANCES

The first
steps toward
financing
your next
vehicle
............................................................

hen purchasing a new car, many buyers decide to

finance rather than buying the car outright. Financing allows drivers the opportunity to drive a new car
after making an initial down payment and then making monthly
payments until the loan has been paid in full.
Without the option to finance, many drivers may not be able to
afford a brand new car or even a preowned car with relatively few
miles thats more reliable than an older used car with a considerable amount of miles. But before prospective buyers visit the
financing departments of any dealerships, its best to first take
some steps to ensure they get the best financing deal possible.
ADDRESS YOUR CREDIT SCORE. Your credit score will go a

long way toward determining both your eligibility to finance a car

as well as the interest rate on the loan should you be approved. Get
a copy of your credit report from a credit reporting agency and
scour it to determine if there are any discrepancies or blemishes
that need to be addressed. If your credit score is low, try to delay
buying a new car until you can take steps to improve your score.
Such steps may include paying down existing debt, establishing a
history of paying on time and making certain that any inaccuracies are removed.
DETERMINE HOW MUCH YOU CAN AFFORD. It might be

your dream to tool around town in an imported sports car, but

if you need to finance your next car, chances are the high-end
imports or luxury automobiles are more than you can afford.
The greater the down payment you make, the less your monthly
payment will be. So if you have a substantial amount of money in
40

Natures Pathways | September 2015

your savings, you may want to put more down at signing so your
budget is more flexible month-to-month. Calculate the cost of all
of your monthly expenses to determine how much you can afford
to pay for a car each month. And dont forget that insurance costs
on a brand new vehicle will be more than the costs of insuring a
preowned car or truck.
SEEK PREAPPROVAL FOR A LOAN. Much like you might get

preapproved for a mortgage, you can do the same with regard to

an automotive loan. Walking into a dealership preapproved for
a loan can make the process less of a hassle, and it also might
compel a dealer to make a more attractive offer than the lender
who preapproved you.
DONT PRESSURE YOURSELF. Many buyers are their own

worst enemies when it comes to buying a new car. If you were

preapproved for an auto loan, you might feel like you need to go out
and buy a new car immediately. While a preapproval may mandate
that you buy a car within a certain amount of days before you have
to reapply, that still gives you a considerable amount of time to find
a car. If you pressure yourself to buy a new car, you may end up
driving the wrong vehicle or paying too much. Be patient when
shopping for the best deal, and youre more likely to find it.
Financing is a great way to get behind the wheel of your next
vehicle. Some careful planning before visiting the dealership can
make a financing deal even better.

Folic acid,
B12 and
dementia
in senior
citizens
................................................
By Grandma Rose

here seems to be an epidemic of dementia among seniors.

Some of the dementia may be preventable. What I am
about to tell you should be common knowledge, but it is
not. One of the causes of dementia is shortage of vitamin B12.
Low energy levels can also result from B12 shortage.
Vitamin B12 can only be obtained from meat and meat products like milk and eggs. As we age, our bodies make less stomach
acid. B12 needs strong stomach acid to extract the vitamin from
the meat. It is wise for seniors to take vitamin B12 as insurance
against a shortage. It is difficult to overdose on B12. The kind
that is absorbed under the tongue is best as some seniors cannot
absorb it from the stomach properly.
Anemia resulting in lack of energy should be the first signal
that we are not absorbing enough B12 from the meat we eat.
However, something more sinister is going on. In about 1996
the FDA mandated that folic acid, an artificial form of folate, an
important nutrient in foliage, be added to all foods made from
white flour to prevent spina bifida in newborns. It works! Spina
bifida in newborns has declined. However, folic acid stays in the
body and builds up higher than natural folate does.
Folic acid prevents the first warning signs of B12 shortage,
which is anemia. That seems like a good thing but it is not. Anemia
is reversible with a B12 supplement. The more advanced sign of
B12 shortage is dementia. Dementia is not reversible. By the time
dementia is noticed, it is too late.
Here is what you can do. If you must eat food made from flour,
www.naturespathways.com

make sure it is 100 percent whole grain only, as it doesnt have

folic acid added. Take a B12 supplement that you place under your
tongue. Do not eat processed foods or prepared cereal as it almost
surely has folic acid added.
Grandma Rose makes 100 percent whole wheat bread, cookies and
muffins that contain no folic acid and are high in fiber including

Recycling
plastic bags,
wrap and
film
..............................
By Jennifer Semrau

any of us have gotten into the awesome habit of taking

our reusable shopping bags to the grocery store. Several
grocery stores even have signs in the parking lot,

42

Natures Pathways | September 2015

reminding us to grab our bags from our trunks, and offering a

nickel discount for each bag used. But we dont always remember
to grab those same reusable bags at the drug store or the department store. Or perhaps we anticipate only needing a few items,
and a shopping cart later, leave with some plastic bags. And even
if we religiously use our reusable shopping bags, no doubt other
plastic bags and wrap are acquired in the home, like bread bags or
the wrap around a case of water. Today learn just what to do with
plastic bags, wrap and film and why it is important to properly
handle this material.
Most people recognize that retail plastic grocery bags are recyclable; however, it is very important that they be recycled at the correct
location. Plastic bags should never be recycled in your curbside cart
or bin because area recycling processing facilities are not designed to
capture this material. The plastic bags themselves represent a contaminant and even worse, cause significant maintenance problems at the
facility. Plastic bags and film easily rip and small pieces may end up
with the paper or other materials where they dont belong. In addition, plastic bags can get entangled in the equipment used to separate
the paper from the cans and bottles called disc screens. Individual
discs are located on shafts in series. The discs provide agitation to
the recycling so that the three-dimensional cans and bottles fall
through holes between the discs to a conveyor below while the flat,
two-dimensional paper travels up the screen. Plastic bags and film
wrap around the discs and shafts, preventing them from working
effectively and causing downtime to remove the plastic.
The trash can is also not the best place to rid yourself of plastic
bags. The lightweight design makes plastic bags extremely difficult to contain in a windy, active landfill environment. Site litter
and keeping local neighborhoods clean are top concerns for area
landfills. Plastic bags often make up the bulk of site litter and
clean-up efforts.
www.naturespathways.com

Instead, plastic bags should be brought to retail store locations

that accept them for recycling. Most grocery, mass retail and
department stores have kiosks near the front of the store for the
collection of plastic bags. But did you know that not only can you
recycle regular retail bags, but a whole host of other bags and film
at these drop-off locations? Acceptable items include: bread/bun
bags, newspaper bags, produce bags, ice bags, drycleaner bags, zip
lock bags, boxed cereal liner bags, bubble wrap, air pillows, and
wrap from around cases of water, iced tea, snacks, etc., wrap from
around paper towel, toilet paper, napkins or diapers and wrap
from around electronics and furniture.
All plastic bags and film should be clean and dry. Remove any
receipts or food debris (shake out bread crumbs and cereal from
box liners, etc.). An ice bag or produce bag with residual liquid
should dry inside out before recycling. Once ready, drop off at
a participating retail collection location. Your bags and film will
have a second life as new packaging or perhaps even composite
lumber, pallets, crates or piping.

Green tea
Camellia sinensis
..............................................

ll types of tea (green, black and oolong) are produced

from the Camellia sinensis plant using different methods.
Fresh leaves from the plant are steamed to produce green
tea. Green tea and green tea extracts, such as its component
EGCG, have traditionally been used to prevent and treat a variety
of cancers, including breast, stomach and skin cancers, and for
mental alertness, weight loss, lowering cholesterol levels, and
protecting skin from sun damage.
Green tea is usually brewed and drunk as a beverage. Green tea
extracts can be taken in capsules and are sometimes used in skin
products.

What the science says

Laboratory studies suggest that green tea may help protect against
or slow the growth of certain cancers, but studies in people have
shown mixed results.
Some evidence suggests that the use of green tea preparations
improves mental alertness, most likely because of its caffeine
content. There is not enough reliable data to determine whether
green tea can aid in weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels or
protect the skin from sun damage.
NCCIH supports studies to learn more about the components
in green tea and their effects on conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

Side effects and cautions

Green tea is safe for most adults when used in moderate amounts.
There have been some case reports of liver problems in people
taking concentrated green tea extracts. The problems do not seem
44

to be connected with green tea infusions or beverages. Although
these cases are very rare and the evidence is not definitive, experts
suggest that concentrated green tea extracts be taken with food, and
that people discontinue use and consult a health care practitioner
if they have a liver disorder or develop symptoms of liver trouble,
such as abdominal pain, dark urine or jaundice.
Green tea and green tea extracts contain caffeine. Caffeine can
cause insomnia, anxiety, irritability, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea or frequent urination in some people.
Green tea contains small amounts of vitamin K, which can
make anticoagulant drugs, such as warfarin, less effective.

Bruschetta
................................................................................................................................................
By Kim Neher, MS Clinical Nutritionist

Ingredients:

2 tablespoon olive oil

3-5 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
large red tomato
3 small/medium heirloom tomatoes (or 2 pints of cherry/grape
tomatoes)
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
15-20 fresh basil leaves
1 teaspoon salt (you may not need a whole teaspoon, the cheese
will give it a salty flavor too)
teaspoon pepper
Fresh grated parmesan cheese
Ezekiel low sodium gluten-free bread (this crisps up awesome
no need for regular French bread!)

Directions:

Take a few slices of the bread and cut them in half from top to
bottom and set aside for now.
Finely chop the garlic. Add the olive oil to a pan and cook the
garlic so it becomes fragrant and lightly golden in color. Set aside
46

and let cool just a bit.

Chop the tomatoes into small bite sized pieces. Add garlic and
tomatoes to a medium sized bowl. Add the balsamic vinegar, salt
and pepper. Finely mince the basil leaves and add to the mixture.
Let this mixture sit for an hour or two to allow all of the flavors to
come together.
Now add the olive oil to a pan and rub the pieces of bread
around so they all get lightly coated in the oil. Keep the heat at
medium to medium/high so they do not burn. They should take
around 5-10 minutes or so to get nice and crispy. Toast each side.
Spoon the mixture on a piece of bread and sprinkle on some of
the cheese. It is delicious!

urious about the aerial sports? The

circus arts and pole have gained
popularity in recent years as an alternative fitness option, and theres a state of the
art facility with nationally accredited instructors in Appleton! Aerial Dance Pole Exercise
LLC offers an exciting way to build your
strength and confidence in a variety of ways.

What can you learn at Aerial

Dance Pole Exercise?

Aerial Dance teaches multiple forms

of the aerial arts. Classes are offered 7
days a week. All classes are single gender
(normally all women) unless specified. The
majority of classes are for ages 18 and up
so the women can bond and support each
other as they work out.
Pole: The Aerial Dance robust pole
exercise program has 4 levels: Beginner,
Intermediate, Advanced and Extreme.
All pole classes run in 8-week sessions
to aid in building cumulative strength
and coordination. Most women take
Beginner Pole for 8-16 weeks, Intermediate for 16-32 weeks, and Advanced
Pole for over a year. This sequential
program was designed by Dr. Brusky
using her PhD knowledge of injury
prevention, and increases strength
and flexibility while promoting proper
muscle engagement and stabilization.
Aerial: Multiple apparatuses are available to play/train on at Aerial Dance,
including aerial silks (two strands of
fabric hanging from one attachment
point, think Cirque Du Soleil!), aerial
hoop (a steel circle hanging at varying
heights off the ground) and aerial
hammocks (one strand of fabric secured
at one or two points to form a sling at
the bottom). There are different class
48

structures for a single apparatus depending on the workout goal. For example,
for the Aerial Hammock apparatus, there
are four different types of classes offered:
Fabric Fit is a strength and conditioning class that uses the hammock with
components of TRX and Aerial Yoga;
Fabric Flexy increases active flexibility
using the hammock with components
of Aerial Yoga and proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation; Fly Foundations is a circus style class that teaches
basic hammock tricks; Fly Flow is an
advanced circus tricks class where individual tricks are sequenced to form long
in-air combinations. All aerial classes can
be taken as drop-in and many dont have
prerequisites.
Flexibility and conditioning: In addition to apparatus based classes, Aerial
Dance also has multiple classes that
build strength and/or flexibility using
minimal equipment and focusing on
proper form. The Vertical Barre class, for
example, focuses on toning the legs, butt
and abs while using the pole (a vertical
bar!) like a ballerina would a ballet barre.

What are Aerial Dance Pole

Exercise facilities like?

Aerial Dance also offers private lessons,

group lessons and parties for special
occasions!

Where can you learn more?

What are instructors

qualifications?

Aerial Dance instructors hold multiple

nationally accredited fitness certifications and
participate in ongoing weekly training. The
company website, www.PoleAppleton.com
lists instructor biographies and training qualifications. All instructors were students of the
program for at least a year before beginning
the extensive instructor training program.

There are three studios within the Aerial

Dance Appleton location. The Pole Studio
is the first youll see upon entering the facility; it has 9 permanent 10 foot poles made of
stainless steel that spin. The Fitness Studio
has a single pole, gymnastics stall bars and
lots of fitness equipment for intimate classes
that focus on technique. The Aerial Studio
has 9 chrome semi-permanent poles, 10
aerial hammocks, and numerous attachment points for hoop and silks. Both the
Pole Studio and Aerial Studio have a wall of
floor to ceiling mirrors. There is a bathroom
on site with full shower with towel service
and two changing rooms.

What is the atmosphere like?

In a culture that sets unrealistic physical expectations, Aerial Dance focuses on

strength and ability instead of numbers.
The classes are challenging, but the environment is exceedingly positive. The
students support and share in each others
accomplishments, and making friends is a
common occurrence!
For more information about Aerial Dance
Pole Exercise, call 920-750-1441 or check out
www.PoleAppleton.com. Upcoming pole
classes begin September 13 or November 8.
Drop-in aerial, flexibility and conditioning
classes are available daily.

businessPROFILE

Meet Shawna Peterson

hawna Peterson added TheOrganicSkin.com to her already

existing business Refined Beauti, Inc. in January of 2015. She
was a Salon Consultant for 12 years before her passion led her
to start her own beauty supply distributor 5 years ago. She is more of
a boutique distributor based in Green Bay that partners with professional salons to enhance the experience of their customers. She has
also coordinated numerous charity events that help salons give back
to their local community, and that alone, is extremely rewarding.
In October of 2013, she was vacationing in Greece with her
family, and having fair skin in the Greek Islands, she was in
desperate need of sunscreen. Her grandmother was from Greece;
however, she did not inherit her beautiful Mediterranean skin.
She came across Olivaloe Skin, Body, & Hair products in a little
boutique in Crete, Greece. After trying the sunscreen and a few
other products, she was amazed at the results. The thing she liked
most about the products were their ingredients organic olive
oil and organic aloe vera were the base of every product. They
also do not use silicone, paraben, Vaseline, propylene glycol or
mineral oil in their products. All of the Olivaloe products meet
the European guidelines, which tend to be very strict.
Olive oil, otherwise known as liquid gold, has incredible nourishing benefits without clogging your pores. Then there is aloe vera gel,
known as the plant of immortality, which has countless benefits for
your skin. When you marry these two ingredients, which have been
around for hundreds of years, you see incredible benefits:
Moisturizes without clogging your pores (dry skin loves olive oil)
www.naturespathways.com

Is incredibly healing, including scars

Balances sebum production in the skin (excellent for acne)
Is rich in antioxidants, which helps fight free radicals
(anti-aging)
Reduces inflammation (excellent for under eyes)
Soothes skin as it protects against bacteria
After Shawna got back from Greece, she couldnt stop thinking
about how great it would be to have Olivaloe available for people
in the United States. After working out the logistics, Shawna saw
that it was a perfect fit for her company, a high quality product that
provides excellent results, at an affordable price for consumers. She
received the first shipment in November of 2014, and with great
excitement, she outgrew her warehouse and moved into a larger
space to accommodate the growth of her business. In January
2015, Shawna launched TheOrganicSkin.com. Now people from
all over the United States can experience these phenomenal products. After all, its the treatment your skin deserves.
