A
LETTER FROM THE TE
Its September, and the cornstalks are as high as they will go,
And the red cheeks of the apples everywhere begin to show;
Now the suppers scarcely over ere the darkness settles down
And the moon looms big and yellow at the edges of the town;
Oh, its good to see the children, when their little prayers are said,
Duck beneath the patchwork covers when they tumble into bed.
Its September, and a calmness and a sweetness seem to fall
Over everything thats living, just as though it hears the call
Of Old Winter, trudging slowly, with his pack of ice and snow,
In the distance over yonder, and it somehow seems as though
Every tiny little blossom wants to look its very best
When the frost shall bite its petals and it droops away to rest.

Its September! Its the fullness and the ripeness of the year;
All the work of earth is finished, or the final tasks are near,
But there is no doleful wailing; every living thing that grows,
For the end that is approaching wears the finest garb it knows.
And I pray that I may proudly hold my head up high and smile
When I come to my September in the golden afterwhile.
We hope you enjoy the reprieve of the summer heat and the crisp air as
much as we do!

.......................................................................
By Randi Mann, NP
n the years past, when treating thyroid disease doctors traditionally looked at your symptoms and your reflexes to help dose
your medication to what they felt normal thyroid function
should be. The amount of thyroid given then, on average, was three
times higher than seen today. Patients who took natural desiccated
thyroid medication (Armour Thyroid) before 1970 felt more motivated, more energetic and noticed that overall they felt better! In the
1970s, there was a change in thyroid treatment with the introduction of synthetic thyroid hormones (Synthroid) and looking at a
blood test result called the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) for
the basis of diagnosing the condition of thyroid disease.
TSH is often the wrong marker for patients who have low thyroid
output; it plays a role, but it has created a new group of patients
who are categorized into the subclinical hypothyroid group. This
is a very large group of patients that repeatedly tell their doctors
or nurse practitioners, How can my thyroid test results be normal
when I have all of these symptoms of low thyroid? Im cold all the
time, tired, constipated, my hair is falling out, my sex drive is low,
I am gaining weight, Im depressed and my mood changes easily.
When their TSH is normal, they are told to take an antidepressant
or other drug, go on a diet, exercise more, lessen their stress or take
more time off. Their symptoms are then ignored and their thyroid
condition is left untreated. The diagnosis using only one blood test

ats and dogs are the two most popular types of pets in
the country, and while dogs have been dubbed mans best
friend, cat owners are quite vocal when expressing their
love for their feline friends.
Those looking for a cat may not have to look far. The ASPCA
says approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal
shelters nationwide every year, and roughly 3.4 million of those
are cats. An area shelter is an ideal place to find a new pet for those
thinking of getting their first cat or adding to the pets already in
the household. Cats can be purchased from pet stores, but they
also may be available via friends or family members who have
recently welcomed a new litter.
Before bringing your cat home, it is best to make sure you and
members of your household are prepared to welcome a furry
feline friend into your home.

new cat may need some time before he or she acclimates to a new
environment. To facilitate this process, designate a room or area
in the house for your cat. This should be a low-traffic spot. Keep a
litter box and food and water bowls nearby.
STOCK UP ON YOUR SUPPLIES. Cats will need various pet

examined by the vet and discuss any questions or concerns you

Ten reasons to

Getting a float before you get a massage warms and relaxes your
muscles so your tight spots are more easily broken up by the time
you get your massage. You get a better massage when you float
first.

take you there faster and leave you in that peaceful state longer
because floatation tanks are designed to block out all external
stimuli so you wont be distracted by the outside world.
Great Lakes Relaxation Center has two classic tank style floatation tanks available so
you can bring a friend or loved one to float simultaneously in separate private rooms.
In addition to floatation therapy, we also offer massage therapy, sound therapy, far
infrared sauna, and a steam shower unit. We are open seven days a week and will
take evening appointments, which makes it easy for you to schedule your floatation
sessions. Sessions may be scheduled over the phone or at our website. Gift certificates
can be purchased online as well. Our website is www.ManitowocMassage.com.
Christine Vander Bloomen has been a massage therapist and owned and operated Great Lakes for nearly eleven years. Her practice has an assortment of
sensory and non-sensory experiences including massage therapy, sound therapy
and heat therapies in addition to floatation therapy. She has been an avid floater
going on three years. She is sought by those seeking pain relief, stress reduction
and pure relaxation.

Is there

..............................................................
By John Sowinski
Glutenfreedrugs.com
This website has links to many other useful websites as well, so this
is a great place to start. It contains links to sites that have glutenfree products both by therapeutic category and alphabetically. It
also has a link to a list of typical fillers that are in medications.
Celiaccentral.org/gluteninmeds/
This site has links to sites called Gluten in Medication Guide and
Gluten Free Drugs. It also has a site called The Rubins where it
has manufacturers information so you are able to contact them if
you cant find the information you need.
Dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/
At this site you can search for your medication and find the
specific companys product that you are taking. For example, if
you are taking Hydrochlorothiazide, it is made by many companies. You can find the exact companys product you are taking and
find out all of its ingredients.
If after all investigation you cant find the medication you need
in a form that is gluten-free, a compounding pharmacy can help.
When compounded the pharmacy can control what fillers are
used in your medication and thus assure that your medication is
gluten free.

Tuning into
health
..........................................................
By Sharon Paprocki, MAC, LPC, NBCC
The research on music has shown that music affects our hormone
production levels. Serotonin, cortisol, oxytocin and norepinephrine are a few hormones that are impacted by music. Higher
serotonin levels help control memory power, learning, mood
and sleep. Music lowers the release of cortisol, which in turn
reduces stress levels for a person. Oxytocin is nicknamed the love
hormone. Research is being done on its role in social recognition,
bonding and anxiety. Oxytocin promotes feelings of contentment,
can reduce anxiety and creates a sense of calm and security. Music
allows for the release of norepinephrine, a hormone that connects
us with feelings of joy and exhilaration.
In addition, brain science has taught us that although an individuals brain functions are ongoing, many people tend to use
one side of their brain at a time as they engage in various tasks.
Left brained people are more logical and analytical. They tend to
look at the pieces that make up the whole. Right brained people
are intuitive, creative and look at information and the world as a
whole. Music affords us a unique opportunity in that it is an activity that involves the use of the whole brain and clearly using our
whole brain maximizes our potential.
Considering all the health benefits to music, you may be asking
yourself, what kind of music is best for me to be listening to? Interestingly, in searching for the answer to this question mixed results
were found. Some reports stated that happy music will elevate mood
and sad music lowers mood, yet another article noted that there
are perceived feelings and actual feelings when listening to music,
which means some people listening to sad music do not feel sad as
they can separate the perceived feeling referred to in the music from
their actual feelings. Therefore no internal sadness occurs. A study
of 144 adults and teens listening to grunge music all experienced

Camellia sinensis

Laboratory studies suggest that green tea may help protect against
or slow the growth of certain cancers, but studies in people have
shown mixed results.
Some evidence suggests that the use of green tea preparations
improves mental alertness, most likely because of its caffeine
content. There is not enough reliable data to determine whether
green tea can aid in weight loss, lower blood cholesterol levels or
protect the skin from sun damage.
NCCIH supports studies to learn more about the components
in green tea and their effects on conditions such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
Green tea is safe for most adults when used in moderate amounts.
There have been some case reports of liver problems in people
taking concentrated green tea extracts. The problems do not seem

From this basic list, your knowledge of homeopathy and homeopathic remedies can grow to cover endless uses. Homeopathy and

to aid the body in its efforts to provide a healing response. By

structures for a single apparatus depending on the workout goal. For example,
for the Aerial Hammock apparatus, there
are four different types of classes offered:
Fabric Fit is a strength and conditioning class that uses the hammock with
components of TRX and Aerial Yoga;
Fabric Flexy increases active flexibility
using the hammock with components
of Aerial Yoga and proprioceptive
neuromuscular facilitation; Fly Foundations is a circus style class that teaches
basic hammock tricks; Fly Flow is an
advanced circus tricks class where individual tricks are sequenced to form long
in-air combinations. All aerial classes can
be taken as drop-in and many dont have
prerequisites.
Flexibility and conditioning: In addition to apparatus based classes, Aerial
Dance also has multiple classes that
build strength and/or flexibility using
minimal equipment and focusing on
proper form. The Vertical Barre class, for
example, focuses on toning the legs, butt
and abs while using the pole (a vertical
bar!) like a ballerina would a ballet barre.
