PECFAS Subscales
The PECFAS determines level of functioning across 7 critical life subscales assessing the
child as well as two scales to assess caregiver functioning. The PECFAS yields a total
score, representing the total level of dysfunction and 9 individual subscales scores that
can inform the focus of treatment and aid in monitoring change in behavior over time.

Levels of Impairment
Within each subscale, the behavioral
items are grouped by severity into
four columns, using a continuum
of severity of impairment. Each
level of severity is associated with
a score.

TOTAL SCORE

10-15 minutes

The PECFAS is widely used to inform decisions about need for services or additional
specialized assessment, type and intensity of treatment, readiness for school, and
specialized services needed for educational success. The assessment can be quickly
completed by practitioners, based on information from routine clinical evaluation.

LEVEL OF IMPAIRMENT

PECFAS

The Preschool and Early Childhood Functional Assessment Scale (PECFAS) was developed
from the Child and Adolescent Functional Assessment Scale (CAFAS), an assessment backed
by over 20 years of research. The PECFAS is determines day-to-day functioning across
critical life domains and determines whether functioning improves over time. The
PECFAS can be used for children as young as 3 years old and up to 7 years of age. The
overlap in age with the CAFAS (designed for youth aged 5-19) accommodates children
who function more immaturely than their chronological age would suggest.

the child is assigned the items corresponding score for the subscale. After assigning the
subscale score, the rater moves on to the next subscale.

Psychometric Data
The PECFAS is objective, has face validity and is sensitive to client change. It contains a
comprehensive list of behavioral descriptors for presenting problems of young children.
The PECFAS has been used with a variety of children referred for mental health services
varying in type and severity of problems. It has also been used by educational programs,
social services and child welfare agencies.
