BIOPLASTICSANDBIOFOAMS

Plantproteinssuchaswheatgluten(WG)arepromisingalternativestopetroleumbasedpackagingmaterials.Theproteinsarebiodegradableandarerelativelylow
costbyproductsfromthebioethanolfuelindustry.Theycanbepolymerizedbyprocessingintobioplasticfilmsorfoamsforvariousapplications.
Themorphology(shapeandform)ofpackagingmaterialscanbecorrelatedwithfunctionsthatareimportantforpackagingapplications,forexamplemechanical
strengthandairbarrierproperties.ResearchersattheSwedishUniversityofAgriculturalSciences(SLU)andtheRoyalInstituteofTechnology(KTH)areregularvisitors
attheMAXIVLaboratorywheretheyuseXrayscatteringtechniques(SAXSandWAXS)tounderstandthemorphologyofmaterialsbasedonWGproteins.

Inparticular,twodifferentmaterialshavebeeninvestigatedatMAXIVLaboratory;bioplastic(WGglyceroladditives)filmsandWGfoams.
ThepropertiesofbioplasticWGfilmsarestronglyaffectedbymanufacturingprocessesandfilmcomposition.Forfutureapplicationsitishenceimportantto
understandhowthesepropertiescanbechangedinacontrolledmanner.SAXSmeasurementsattheMAXIVLaboratoryhelpedresearchersimprovetheir
understandingoftherelationshipbetweenshapeandformandthefunctionofvarioustypesofbioplasticfilms.Theresearchshowedhowthefilmmorphologycould
betailoredbyblendingthebioplasticswithvariouschemicalsincludingsodiumhydroxide,ammoniumhydroxideandsalicylicacidduringmanufacturing.Themost
importantresultwastheobservationofhexagonal(HCP)structuresinsomeofthefilms,whichinfluencethestrengthofthematerial.

Inaddition,foamsmadefromwheatglutenweredevelopedandshoweddifferentdensityandstrengthdependingonthefractionsofdifferentproteinstheycontained
(forexamplegliadinorgluteninrich).TheXrayscatteringexperimentswereofthehighestimportanceingaininginformationonhowthefoammorphologycanbe
tailormadeforpackagingapplications.
POLYMERCOMPOSITES
TetraPak

TetraPakisaglobalsupplieroffoodprocessingandpackagingsolutions,presentinmorethan170countrieswithsome22,000employees.In2011TetraPakproduced

over167billionpackagesworldwide.ResearchersatTetraPakarecontinuouslydevelopingnewmaterialsforuseintheirvariouspackages.
Onesuchmaterialisapolymerbasedcomposite.Thiscompositeistestedforimprovedgasbarrierpropertiescomparedwithconventionalplasticbasedfilmsandmay
hencebeusedtoincreasetheshelflifeofpackagedproducts.

Intheirefforttounderstandthepropertiesofthecompositematerial,TetraPakresearchersvisitedthebeamlineI911SAXSattheMAXIVLaboratorytoperformSAXS.
Thetechniqueissensitivetothesize,distribution,orientationandaggregationoftheparticlesinthepolymermatrix,whicharefactorsknowntoinfluencethegas
barrierpropertiesofthematerial.Figure3illustratestheadvantageofusingthematerialwiththetortuousdiffusionpathinsteadofconventionalcompositesingas
barrierplasticfilms.
TheexperimentshelpedtheTetraPakresearchersunderstandhowtheparticlesweredistributedinthepolymermatrixandhowtheyinfluencethefinalpropertiesof
thecomposite.TheirvisittotheMAXIVLaboratorythusprovidedthemwithanimportantpuzzlepieceintheirdevelopmentofimprovedmaterialsforusagein
packagesforfooddistribution.
