Basic Definitions
Thermodynamics is the science that deals with heat and work and those properties
of substances that bear a relation to heat and work
Classical thermo is based on data and postulates from experiments
System a device or a combination of devices containing a quantity of matter that
is being studied. The mass is enclosed by physical or imaginary boundaries.
Cylinder of air boundary=wall of cylinder
Water flowing in pipe from x=0 to x=10 physical boundary=pipe wall,
x=0/x=10 is imaginary boundary
Volume that surrounds the system is called the control volume. Entire surface of
control volume is called the control surface.
Surroundings everything external to the system that may have an effect on the
system behavior
Closed system no mass flow across boundaries
Open system there is mass flow across boundaries
Adiabatic no heat flow across boundaries
Isolated system no interaction with surroundings, that is there is no heat, mass,
and work across boundaries
Intrinsic Observation observation of the system without reference to the
surroundings
Ex. total mass and total volume
Extrinsic Observation observation involving a relationship between the system and
surroundings

Property an observation ie a measurement which depends only on the state of the

system
Extensive Property one with depends on the size of the total mass of the system
Ie. Volume, total mass
Intensive Property one which is independent of the extent or total mass of the
system. They are characteristic of the system as a whole or any part of it.
Ie. Pressure, T, specific volume v, density rho where rho=1/v
Extensive properties per unit mass are intensive properties
Ex. V/m = v
State a condition of a system which is fixed by specifying values of the properties
of the system.
The number of properties needed to determine the state of the system is
obtained by experiment
Process path followed by a system in undergoing a change in state
Or path of succession of states through which the system passes
Alternate definition of a property a function that depends only on the initial and
final states of the system and not the path followed.
Cycle a process in which a system in an initial state goes through a change in
state and returns to its initial state
Reversible process a process that can be reversed in such a manner that both the
system and surroundings return to their initial conditions
Heat a form of energy that is transferred from one body to another due to a
temperature difference
Work product of a force and the distance
Our definition of work work is done by a system such that the sole effect on the
surroundings could be raising of a weight
Equilibrium condition of a system such that the system can undergo no
spontaneous or unaided changes
Newtons 2nd law of motion F = ma/g where F is force, m is mass, a is acceleration,
g is grav constant
Pressure normal component of the force per unit area
Atmospheric pressure pressure due to atmosphere
