FOREWORD
In May 2006 the Immigrant Council of Ireland published its first Directory of Migrant Led
Organisations in response to a need for a centralised information resource on the location of these
organisations and the services they offered. The directory was a very popular publication, much
sought-after by individuals and organisations seeking to engage more with migrant groups.
However circumstances have changed over time. While some migrant-led groups in Ireland are well
established, others are more informal and transient, and some responded to specific service needs and
have moved on. As a result, while a number of the groups in the first edition have ceased to exist, new
groups have emerged. In response to these developments, we have updated the directory with this
second edition.
The number and range of organisations featured in this directory demonstrates the vast contribution
migrants make in the civic, commercial and community spheres across Ireland. It highlights the range
of supports and activities conducted by small, often voluntary organisations, despite the lack of
financial support available to many of them. The directory illustrates the fact that migrants are actively
participating in Irish society and are active agents in the integration process.
This edition of the directory features more organisations than the first edition - 61 in total. Each entry
includes information provided by the groups themselves, in their own words, on their goals, services or
activities and relevant contact details. We would like to thank all those who have contributed to this
publication.
The ICI also would like to thank the Citizens Information Board and the Office of the Minister for
Integration for their financial support for this project. We would also like to thank ICI Research and
Integration Officer Fidle Mutwarasibo for initiating the project and overseeing the second edition,

AFRICAN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

ORGANISATION GOALS
The aim of the project is to support the African Community residing locally in Waterford as well as
nationally through identifying their needs, as individuals and as a community, and to provide
assistance in addressing those needs. The target groups are African asylum-seekers, refugees
and immigrants. It is hoped that the project will continue to possess the ongoing capacity to deliver
services and contribute towards making a positive change in the lives of each individual and target
group.

AFRICAN CULTURAL AWARENESS PROJECT

ORGANISATION GOALS
The African Cultural Awareness Project was established to promote cultural awareness,
acceptance and social integration in order to advance racial harmony and community cohesion.
The goals are to change attitudes, challenge behaviours and raise cultural awareness through
networking, collaboration and training.

This project is committed to educational processes that address issues of equality, inclusion, race
awareness, integration and interculturalism. It works with various cultures, but particularly with
African cultures through schools, youth projects, community development projects and community
development groups in Ireland. The project focuses primarily on raising diversity awareness in the
area of the arts and the participation of Africans and other cultures at local community level and
beyond.
More specifically, the project is involved in the following activities:

AFRICAN VOICE NEWSPAPER

ORGANISATION GOALS
The African Voice, which is a registered national newspaper, was established with the aim of
promoting cultural diversity and integration through the media in Ireland.

The newspaper focuses in particular on African and African-Irish people in Ireland, along with
more general news coverage.
Every issue of The African Voice publishes features stories, columns, news briefs, profiles, sports

AkiDwA
ORGANISATION GOALS
AkiDwA was established in August 2001 with the aim of responding to and addressing the existing
and changing needs of African and migrant women living in Ireland. It is a voluntary, nongovernmental organisation and a representative body for all African and migrant women living in
Ireland irrespective of their national/ethnic background, tradition, religious beliefs, socio-economic,
or legal status. AkiDwAs work focuses on development and human rights issues based on a
gender perspective.
AkiDwAs mission is to promote equality for African women living in Ireland so as to ensure
positive change and social justice. AkiDwAs goals are to promote equality for migrant women
living in Ireland, who participate in the economical, social cultural and political fields.

ASSOCIATION OF THE MOLDOVAN COMMUNITY OF IRELAND

ORGANISATION GOALS
The Association of the Moldovan Community in Ireland works on issues affecting the common
experience of Moldovan expatriates living in Ireland and aims to cater for Moldovans common
needs through cultural, educational and advocacy programmes.

ORGANISATION GOALS
Clare Immigrant Support Centre (CISC) works to ensure access to appropriate state and
community services and to uphold all rights and entitlements of the migrant community in Clare.

CONGO LISANGA
THE CONGOLESE NETWORK IRELAND
ORGANISATION GOALS
Lisanga Congo is a non-governmental organisation created by Congolese residents in Ireland in
2005 primarily from the merger of Congo Solidarity Group (1998) and Congolese Irish Partnership
(2000) Congo Lisanga works with people who are concerned about the welfare of the Congolese
community in Ireland in the process of integration into Irish society. The aims are:

Corks Multicultural Newspaper The Immigrant is a voluntary, community, non-profit organisation
which promotes Irish culture and traditions to newcomers and introduces cultural diversity to Irish
society. The newspaper has been operating since May 2004 and it is the only free multicultural
newspaper in Cork. It promotes multiculturalism, positive attitudes and integration. Its code of ethic
is 3N, which represents non-political, non-sectarian, non-racist.
The principal aim of the newspaper is to provide comprehensive information to a diverse range of
readers and to give them the opportunity to express themselves by publishing their opinions and
by answering their questions through coverage in The Immigrant.

DISCOVERY MINISTRY
ORGANISATION GOALS
Discovery Ministry was coordinated by The Chaplaincy for the International Community, Church of
Ireland, Anglican Communion, Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough. The Ministry was put in place
to respond to immigration and integration challenges as they affect the Church. A further aim is to
provide pastoral and other assistance to those migrating to Ireland. It draws inspiration and
guidance from scripture, the Holy Spirit and Anglican Social teaching. In this ministry, there is a
listening ear to deal with individual, family or collective pastoral needs regardless of colour,
creed/religious affiliation, language or status. Discovery Ministry recognises all human beings as
equal members of Gods family and helps citizens and migrants create opportunities to build
loving, trusting and understanding relationships with one another, especially at local levels.

Discovery Ministry serves as a useful link for contact and cooperation with governmental and nongovernmental agencies, as well as other organisations which deal with immigration issues. In
doing so, this will help build a relevant future church and a more productive, fair, healthy and
stronger society. It encourages migrants cultural, social and spiritual talents and transcultural
fellowships called Discovery Services. It harnesses and celebrates diversity, sharing love and
care for one another. All programmes are facilitated by this Ministry and Chaplaincy.

LATIN AMERICA SOLIDARITY CENTRE

ORGANISATION GOALS
Latin America Solidarity Centres (LASC) mission is to expose and challenge the current
economic, social and cultural injustices in Latin America and Ireland, through public awarenessraising, education, information exchanges and campaigns in solidarity with the people of Latin
America, who resist oppression and struggle to create a fair and inclusive society.

LASCs activities and projects are grouped into four different areas: campaigning solidarity,
development education, cultural action and organisational development. According to this, the

SEEDS
ORGANISATION GOALS
SEEDS is an independent group working to promote and guarantee human rights, equality and
full integration into society for asylum-seekers, refugees and migrant workers. SEEDS seeks to
promote racial, ethnic and cultural diversity in the North West thus maintaining a commitment
to promote equality and integration. SEEDS came about as a result of the concerns about
increasing racial attacks, verbal abuse, isolation of migrant workers, working conditions,
poverty, exclusion, language problems, visa issues, housing, education, health and social
cohesion. These incidents drew attention to the plight of migrants in Ireland in general, but to
the North West of Ireland in particular.

The centre provides information on accommodation, education and training and also provides
English classes, translation and interpretation services. The creation of support services allows
migrant workers, refugees and new citizens to access information, which is necessary to live in
Ireland. SEEDS serves as a social arena where people can meet, exchange information and
breakdown cultural and linguistic barriers. SEEDS works with employers, landlords and public
service-providers to ensure that everyone is treated fairly and with respect. SEEDS also deals
with migration issues, visas, passports and work permits pertinent to the North of Ireland.

SOMALI COMMUNITY IN IRELAND

ORGANISATION GOALS

To provide important information to enable and to facilitate integration into society

To promote personal and community empowerment of Somalis in Ireland
To act as a bridge between other communities in Ireland
To undertake English language and other training courses among Somalis of all ages
To encourage Somalis to engage in civic participation
To participate fully in all aspects of life in Ireland through sport, music, politics and cultural

Vision Statement
Women from Minorities Network Ireland (WFM) promotes social inclusion where ethnic minority
women have a voice and affect changes in policies that will enable them realise their full potential
and enjoy equal opportunities.
Mission Statement
Women From Minorities Network Irelands mission is to support and educate ethnic minority
women, raise awareness of cultural diversity which promotes positive attitudes towards them and
encourage the Government to make deliberate policies that foster integration and equality.
