Zamboanga Peninsula

Location
Western Mindanao, also known as Region IX, is in the southernmost portion of the
country. It is the smallest region of Mindanao with a total land area of 18.730.1 square
kilometers (18.35% of Mindanaos land mass). Its vast expanse of water is speckled with
a chain of 958 islands and islets.
Composition
The Zamboanga Peninsula region, as it is known now, was formerly Western Mindanao.
It now has three provinces and five cities the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte,
Zamboanga Sibugay, and Zamboanga del Sur as well as the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog,
Pagadian, Zamboanga, and Isabela.
The creation of Zamboanga Sibugay and the realignment of Basilan with the Autonomous
Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARRM) with the exception of Isabela which likewise
became a city together formed the major change in the regions composition in 2001.
The region has 67 municipalities.

Zamboanga del Sur still had the largest population though its primacy in numbers was no
longer as pronounced as it used to be.
Airports and Seaports
A total of 11 airports are located in the region. One is classified as an international
airport the Zamboanga International Airport. Of the 11, two are secondary airports and
nine are feeder airports.
The Zamboanga Peninsula has 8 national ports. The major port of entry is located in
Zamboanga City which is the regions Freeport and Special Economic Zone.

The Ethnic Perspective
Discovering the tribal heritage
About a third of the regions population is composed of ethnic people. These groups,
usually erroneously classified under the general heading of Muslims, are actually distinct
from each other in culture. They are generally divided into the Tausugs, Yakans, Badjaos,

Samals, and the Subanons of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga
Sibugay.
Subanens
The Subanens are considered the aborigines of Zamboanga, settling in the city before the
Spaniards occupied it. The term Subanen, derived from Suba (river), means People of the
River. The Subanens form a single distinctive cultural and linguistic group and are mostly
farmers who grow upland rice, root, and tree crops.
Subanen settlements today are thinly spread over southern Zamboanga del Norte and
Zamboanga del Sur, stretching northward, then eastward to the hinterlands of the
neighboring province of Misamis Occidental.
Badjaos
Often referred to as the Philippine sea gypsies, the Badjaos, until recently, spent their
lives on their small boats which frequent the waters around the numerous islands of the
Sulu Ar-chipelago.
Today, about two-thirds of the Tawi-Tawi Badjaos still use boats as permanent living
quarters. Some of their villages are in fact flotillas.
The Badjaos are of two groups: the southern Badjaos of Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, who call
themselves a single bangsa or ethnic group; and the northern Badjaos (the Basilan and
Zamboanga groups). Though water people, they go on land and are buried on land. They
make frequent trips to their cemeteries to seek favors from spirits of their deceased
ancestors and relatives.
Samas
The Samas are a grouping of tribes that generally inhabit the shorelines of northern and
southern Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, as well as the Zamboanga Peninsula and nearby
islands.
They are peace-loving people whose means of livelihood is fishing. Their staple food is
the cassava or puto as it is locally called. They also eat fruits and vegetables, showing a
partiality to mangoes. Their principal musical instrument is the gabbang or nose flute.
Seven Sama groups inhabit Zamboanga City: the Sama Banguingui, Sama Laminusa,
Sama Ubian, Sama Siasi, Sama Daungung, Sama Kaunlunga, and Sama Bitali.
Tausugs
The Tausugs, considered the most politically dominant group in the Sulu Archipelago,
inhabit the island of Jolo and are dispersed into several communities in the smaller
islands of Tawi-Tawi, Basilan, and Southern Palawan.

They have a rich culture, an amalgam of different cultures and foreign influence that
dates back to as early as the 13th century, when Sulu was trading with China, India, the
East Indies, Arabia, and Japan.
They formed the Sultanate of Sulu in the 15th century. Jolo, which has been the seat of
power, is predominantly Tausug.
Fishing is one occupation many Tausugs are engaged in. They also plant upland rice
inter-cropped with cassava, coconut, abaca, and coffee.
Yakans
Lamitan, the biggest district in Basilan province, is the home base of the Yakans. Yakan
enclaves are however, also found in Isabela City and nearby Zamboanga City. They are
peace-loving people, originally pagans until the spread of Islam in the island. Yakan men
and women are distinguished by skin-tight trousers and bulky waist sashes which serve as
protection from bladed weapons or as hummocks in the hills at night.
These days, Yakans are engaged in both dry and wet agriculture. They grow upland rice,
corn, coconut, and root crops. Hunting continues but is mainly for amusement.
They boast of their intricately designed hand-woven cloth which no other tribe in the
country can imitate. The loom that they use, being the type normally used in Indonesia,
has one end fastened to the wall and the other, ending in a cord, is worn around the waist
of the weaver.
Zamboanga City

Early Malay settlers called the region Jambangan which means City of Flowers.
These Malays who built their settlements by the river banks wer Subanons, i.e.,People

Their chief, Saragan, lived with his family atop legendary Mount Pulumbato that today
continues to tower over Pasonanca and Climaco Freedom Parks. Later, the Samas and the
Badjaos who all the way in their vintas also settled here, building their frail huts along the
shorelines and confused Jambangan with Samboangan.
Samboangan comes from the word sabuan the wooden pole which they used to help
push their vintas in shallow waters or to ready these for mooring.

At a Glance
The City of Zamboanga is on the southernmost tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula and
within the Southwestern Mindanao region. It is bounded on the north by the provinces of
Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, on the east by the Moro Gulf, the south by
the Basilan Strait and Celebes Sea, and on the west by the Sulu Sea.
The territorial jurisdiction of the city includes the islands of big and small Sta.
Cruz,Tictabon, Sacol, Manalipa,Tumalutap,Vitali, as well as other numerous islands.
The total land area of the city is recorded to be 142,099.99 hectares or 1,420.99
kilometers. This does not include the area of about 25 other islands within the territorial
jurisdiction of the city which have an aggregate area of 6,248.5 hectares as verified by
the Office of the City Engineer. Putting these all together, the citys new total land area
would come to 148,338.49 hectares.
Climate
The city has a naturally mild climate with a pronounced dry or wet season relatively
dry from November to May, wet during the rest of the year.
Tropical cyclones or typhoons rarely affect the city because it is outside the typhoon belt.
Average temperature is about 27 C or 80.6 F, while annual rainfall is 1,362.01 mm.
Population
Zamboanga City has a total population of 600,000 (2000 estimate). Roughly 64% of the
population are Christians with the remaining 36% belonging to the cultural minorities.
Languages & Dialects
The major languages spoken in the city are Filipino, English, and Chinese. The imprint of
the Castilian heritage is found in Chabacano, the native dialect which is 70% Spanish and
the remaining 30% an amalgam of other native dialects.
Other dialects spoken are Tausug, Bisaya, Samal,Yakan, and Maranao.

Coconut crude oil and canned tuna fish are the areas top dollar earners.
The Spanish regime had a considerable influence on the way of life of Zamboanguenos.
However, the culture blends well with both Islamic and Western influences.

On October 12, 1936, Zamboanga became a chartered city through Commonwealth Act
No. 39. It was inaugurated on February 26, 1937 with the Hon. Nicasio Valderrosa as
Mayor and five other residents as members of the council. The island of Basilan was part
of Zamboanga City, making it the largest city in the world in terms of area (278,000
hectares). In 1948, Basilan separated and became Basilan Province under Republic Act
No. 283.
Zamboanga City played a pivotal role in Southern Mindanao as a center of trade and
commerce, transportation and communication, education, government, and religion since
early recorded history. It is now a freeport and special economic zone, the only one in
Central and Southern Philippines.
Zamboanga has a rich and colorful history. It was the center of barter trading among the
Chinese, Malays, and the native Tausugs, Samas, Subanons, and the Badjaos as early as
the 13th and 14th centuries.
It was in 1593 when the Spaniards made their presence felt with a small Catholic mission
established briefly at La Caldera, now Recodo.
Much later, on June 23, 1635, the cornerstone of what is now known as Fort Pilar was
laid by Fr. Melchor de Vera, a Jesuit priest, and the Spanish authorities. This date marked
the date of the renaming of Samboanga to the present Zamboanga. It is the citys
founding date.
Except for brief interrupted periods, the Spanish occupied Zamboanga for almost three
centuries, with Fort Pilar as the center of settlement.
The influx of Spanish colonizers and other ethnic groups from Luzon and Visayas also
attracted people from the neighboring islands of Basilan and the Sulu Archipelago.
Many people from outlying areas and islands also sought protection from pirates and
marauders, immigrating to the villa (as the settlement was formerly called Leal y
Valiente Villa by the Spanish crown in 1872) and sheltering in the shadow of the stone
ramparts of Fort Pilar.
The long and relatively continuous presence of the Spaniards amidst many Filipino ethnic
groupings gave birth to a unique dialect Chabacano, a Spanish patois and the
predominant medium of communication in the city today.
Christianity in Mindanao may correctly be said to have been introduced in Zamboanga
City. The then Archdiocese of Zamboanga included practically all of Mindanao, except
Sulu where the proud Tausugs culture and religion proved to be as dynamic as the
Spaniards.

A year after the Treaty of Paris in 1898, when the Philippines was ceded to the United
States, the Americans occupied Zamboanga City. It was during the American period that
the settlement was formally organized into a municipality in 1901 under Public Act 135
by the union of Zamboanga and Tetuan Districts.
From 1903 to 1913, Zamboanga was the capital of the Moro Province which
encompassed the whole of Mindanao. The province had five districts, namely: Cotabato,
Davao, Sulu, Lanao, and Zamboanga. This period saw the construction of the present

Fort Pilar
(5-min. walk from Lantaka Hotel)
Built in 1635 by a Jesuit priest engineer and spanish authorities to ward off attacks from
Moros and foreign invaders. Originally named Real Fuerza de San Jose but renamed Real
Fuerza de Nuestra Seora del Pilar de Zaragosa (whose statue was embossed on the east
wall in 1734 as a frontispiece atop the entrance).
This was eventually sealed off when it became a shrine. Legends are told and retold of
the miraculous power of the Lady of the Pillar. After its capture by

The construction of this building started in 1905 and was completed in 1907 by the
Federal Government of the United States for the then American Governors of the area
which included: Leonard O.Wood,Tasker H. Bliss, Ralph W. Hoyt, and John Pershing of
World War I fame.
Today, this serves as the City Hall of Zamboanga City where the Mayor holds office.

Jesuit scholar Hilario A. Lim observed that though Manila had a larger population than
Zamboanga in the colonial period (and was the seat of government, religion, and culture),
her hispanidad was dispersed over a wide area until it petered out at the outskirts. In
contrast, Zamboangas Spanish community was concentrated in a smaller area, making
her a happy Arcadia of language, manners, and songs, a hothouse of the Spanish brand
of Christianity.
No other group of Filipinos can be said to have been more hispanized than the
Zamboanguenos with their quaint Chabacano, basically Spanish and a language of love.
One of the most enduring and well-known songs illustrating this is the Zamboanga
Hermosa or Zamboanga the Beautiful which is proudly sang today as a city anthem
recalling a glorious romantic past.

Plaza Pershing
(2-minute walk from City Hall)
Occupied by US forces under Gen. C. Bates after the capture of the city on November 15,
1899.
It was named Pettit Barracks after Col. James S. Pettit, 31st Infantry, US Volunteer
Commanding Officer of the Second Military District.
He was later promoted to General, became the Inspector-General and later, the in-Charge
of Civil Affairs of Zamboanga, Inspector-Generals Department, US Infantry.
Taken over by Japanese forces in 1942-1945, it was recaptured by US liberation forces on
March 10, 1945 and turned over to the Philippines on July 4, 1946.
A quaint remnant of a typical Spanish square of the old ayuntamiento of the 17th century
first called Plaza de Don Juan de Salcedo after Spains great conquistador of the 16th
century.
It was renamed Plaza Pershing in memory of Gen. John Pershing for his work before and
during his term as Governor of the Moro Province.
Yellow Beach
(about 8 kms. from city center via jeepneys & minibuses from public market)
Landing site of US Liberation Forces under Maj. Gen. Jens A. Doe on March 10, 1945.
The Americans named the beachhead Yellow Beach for operational identification.
Japanese resistance collapsed on April 2 with Filipino guerillas effectively collaborating
with US Forces.
The beach is in Sinunuc, about 8 kms. west of the city center.

San Ramon Prison & Penal Farm (22-kms. west of city proper)
A 19th century Spanish-built prison penal farm about 22 kms. along the citys west coast
accesible via jeepneys or mini-buses from downtown. First set up by the Spaniards as an
experimental agricultural extension facility.

Sta. Cruz Island is 15 minutes away from either the Lantaka Hotel or the Golf course
beach at P600 per trip in a vessel which carries 6 - 15 persons. It is only about 4
kilometers from Zamboanga mainland. Entrance fee is P20/person and shed rentals range
from P100 to P500.

Great Sta. Cruz Island

Known for its pinkish sand beach which gets its unique hue from coral bits washed up
from the sea bottom.
On the island is a fishing village, a lagoon, and an old Muslim burial ground.
Characterized by extensive and varied aquatic life, coral heads and rocks support a wide
array of tropical fish. The island is ideal for swimming, skin/scuba diving, beachcombing,
and sunbathing. Facilities on the island include dressing rooms, toilets, picnic sheds, and
cooking areas.
As it is a coral island, drinking water is not readily available. As such, swimmers are
advised to take along drinking water and food. They are also advised to wear canvas or

Climaco Freedom Park
(a kilometer from Pasonanca)
The park is a project of the famed Mayor Cesar C. Climaco, within hiking distance from
Pasonanca Park and is a 10-minute ride by jeepney or any other transport.
Some of its popular attractions include a natural swimming hole called the Chrislam Pool,
Heroes Hill in honor of WW II soldiers, Freedoms Eternal Shrine honoring the late
BenignoNinoyAquino Jr., and Ecumenical Holy Hill where the 14 Stations of the Cross
lead to a giant white cross atop a hill overlooking the city and the Basilan Strait.

It is the final resting place of the late feisty Mayor whose name the park bears and who,
to many Zamboanguenos, is a folk hero.

Near the Fish Market and wharf is Fruit Paradise where you can take your fill of fresh
fruits like lanzones, mangosteen, durian, marang, rambutan, mangoes, bananas, and many
more.
Zamboanga Barter Markets
There are 4 barter markets: BCC Shopping Center in Baliwasan, Sta. Cruz Market, Port
Area, and Canelar. On sale are imported textiles, houseware, blankets, batik cloth,
umbrellas, toys, canned goods, toiletries, and electronic items.

Taluksangay Mosque
A Sama village made more picturesque and majestic by golden minarets towering over a
lagoon and luxuriant green brushlands.
Villagers are engaged in fishing, seaweed farming, and firewood-gathering from vast
swamplands nearby.
An interesting site is its floating village made up of little houses on stilts above the
water.
Zamboanga Golf Course & Beach Park
(approx. 6 kms. on the west coast, accessible by jeeyneys and minibuses)
Originally known as the Zamboanga Golf and Country Club when it was

founded in June 1910 by Gov. John Blackjack Pershing of the Moro Province.This is
one of the oldest golf courses in the Philippines with Pershing himself as the clubs first
president.
This course has a fine layout with winding fairways, dogleg situations, and good greens
planted toTifton 228. Its bunkers have the pinkish sand from Sta. Cruz Island.
Although Zamboangas first nine is somewhat flat in terrain, the second is fairly rolling,
skirting around the Basilan Strait for a bit of ocean view.
The course has elevated greens which can be tricky for their small size and rolling makeup.
The course has 18 holes in 64 hectares.
Campo Muslim - Rio Hondo - Sahaya

A colony of coastal Tausugs, Samas, and Badjaos living in frail-looking houses on stilts
situated about 200 meters from Fort Pilar,
Campo Muslim can easily be located by its silver-dome mosque.
To reach the other area known as Rio Hondo, one has to cross the wooden bridge that
spans the narrow river that has given this part of the village its name Rio Hondo
meaning deep river.

A landmark of Zamboanga City completed in December 1999. It is perhaps the countrys

most modern cathedral and the only one with an elevator.

A little of history
The early history of Zamboanga del Norte is shared with that of Zamboanga City which
then was the center of the entire Mindanao area, specially during the American Era.
When Zamboanga City became a chartered city on October 12, 1936, it included the
Zamboanga Peninsula and the island of Basilan, making it the largest city in the world in
terms of land area.

This changed in 1948 when Basilan became a separate province and when Republic Act
No. 711 issued on June 6, 1952 further created two more provinces out of the Zamboanga

Zamboanga del Norte is in Northern Mindanao. It is bounded on the north and west by
the Sulu Sea, on the east by Misamis Occidental, and on the south by Zambo-anga del
Sur.
The total land area is 6,618 square kilometers. It has an average elevation of 243.8
meters, with Mt. Dabiak in Katipunan the highest peak at 2,600 meters. Other parts, near

the coastlines, are plains. The provinces irregular coastline runs 400 kms. from north to
south.
The province has 25 towns clustered into three districts.
Climate
Zamboanga del Norte has a mild and moderate climate due to evenly distributed rainfall
throughout the year. The south has a longer dry season.
Languages/Dialects Spoken
The main dialect spoken by people in the province is Cebuano/Visayan. English and
Filipino (Tagalog) are also spoken, indicative of the higher level of literacy.
The original and native Subanen dialect lives on specially in the highlands.

As of the 2000 estimate of POPCEN, the province of Zamboanga del Norte had a total
population of 80_,000, the
second largest in the region after Zamboanga del Sur.
Ethnic Distinctions
The Subanen or People of the River settled along the river banks long before the
coming of the Spaniards. The Subanens form a distinct cultural and linguistic group and
are now spread over the provinces southern portion cultivating mostly upland crops.
Major Industries
About half of the pro-vinces land area is devoted to agriculture. Corn, coconut, and rice
are major crops. Rich in marine and mineral sources, the provinces fish production has
accelerated through development of fishponds.
Commercial fishing has steadily increased through the years with the yellowfin tuna as
the primary species.

The name and the story behind it

Dipolog began as a tribal settlement of Subanons who were part of the second wave of
Malay migrants to the Philippines. Earliest recorded historical entries date back to 1834
when a civil government was organized by the Spanish Provincial Government of

Misamis with the appointment of a Capitan as town executive, a Teniente and an Aguacil
to maintain law and order.

Dipolog was formally declared a municipality by then Mindanao Governor-General John
J. Pershing on July 1, 1913. It became a city, and the capital of Zamboanga del Norte, on
January 1, 1970 after Republic Act No. 5520 was signed by President Ferdinand E.
Marcos on July 21, 1969.

The city has close to 100,000 residents. About 49% are urban residents while 51% resides
in the rural area, speaking mainly Cebuano/Visayan. English and Filipino (Tagalog) are

Christian Catholics make up 95% of the population. The remaining 5% are Christians of
different agricultural city.
A few large agro-industrial establishments deal in rubber and feed processing, lumber,
and such.

mills, rice/corn mills, small to medium cottage industries engaged in metalcraft, wood &
rattancraft, ceramics, and food processing (sardines, corned beef, dried fish, etc.)

Cogon EcoTourism Park

This is Dipolog Citys premier ecological destination and a favorite of visiting local and
foreign nature enthusiasts. Cogon EcoTourism Park -named after its entrance in the
hinterlands of Barangay Cogon -this environmental rest area park and forest preserve
stretches into the neighboring municipality of Polanco and covers a total land area of 344
hectares.
An off-shoot of tree-planting activities regularly undertaken since its establishment as a
reforestation area in 1958, the area now hosts a range of mature planted trees and floral
varieties. Within the parks vast expanse also lies a 40-hectare natural forest that is home
to at least ten documented rare fauna species such as the Philippine Monkey, the Pigeon
Dove, the PhilippineTurtle Dove, the Monitor Lizard and fruit bats, among others.
Just a few meters from the parks entrance is the Aviary, where visitors can catch a
glimpse of exotic birds.
Further ahead is an exact replica of a typical SubanenVillage where real Subanen
tribesmen actually living within the buffer zone of the project area, don their colorful
native costumes and perform traditional Subanen dances and rituals for interested visiting
groups.This is also where visitors can witness Subanen women as they demonstrate the
art of weaving baskets and other novelty items mainly from Nito vines.
In nearby Brgy. Diwan, another natural wonder awaits visitors in the cool, cascading
waters of Sungkilaw Falls.This splendid gift of nature gives one a wonderful view of the
clear foamy water that gushes down from a seemingly dry formation of huge pockmarked
rocks.
Cogon EcoTourism Complex, where nature is at its best, offers exciting outdoor sports
and adventure, be it camping, trail trekking, bush walking, rappelling, or swimming.
A seven-kilometer velvet stretch of fine sand, exquisite solitude as the fiery sun dies in
the horizon to the onset of twilight, broken only by the distant cries of fishermen
returning with the days catch.
Only 4 kms. from the city proper, it is a favorite of the holiday and weekend crowd.

A landscaped park providing an oasis of greenery right in the center of Dipolog City.
It is a converging point for many people from all walks of life for simple strolling and
relaxing.
The hectare-sized lot just beside City Hall fronting the Holy Rosary Cathedral is an ideal

Concrete steps wind up along a tunnel of verdant trees leading the visitor to a panoramic
vista of sky, plains, and sea horizons and a spectacular view of the twin cities of

The three figures of the artwork symbolize the diverse cultures prevailing in Dipolog
City. Despite diversity, a common vision and hopen unites the people.
The bowl raised to the heavens is a gesture of thanksgiving and offering to God Almighty
for the generous outpouring of graces and 460 meters above sea level. A rarefied
experience, at the very least.
The 14 Stations of the Cross punctuate the way up. And at the peak is a community
chapel for prayer and contemplation.

Eye-filling view of mango and citrus plantations with a vantage tower that offers a vista
of the countryside and beautiful housing projects.
Goodtimes Cafe
A private mini-park-cum-art gallery and restaurant. It is about 1,000 square meters with a
two-storey ancestral house with artwork collections. Everywhere are objects and
collectibles including chinaware, figurines, paintings, sculptures, gruesome papier mache
masks, odd-shaped driftwood, and a twenty-five year old stereo from which soft music
flows all day and night. Kapilya Juliana, an ecumenical chapel, can be seen at the garden.
Cut marbled

harvests and this open chapel. Several works of known Dipolog artists are also sustained
peace and prosperity displayed at Galeria Indolencio at the yard.
Seawall & Foreshore Development
To protect the shoreline, a seawall extending approximately 670 meters was built from
the end of the foreshore development area at Tomas Claudio up to the intersection

ofVelasco St.This Foreshore Development project includes rehabilitation of the existing

seawall and the construction of a new one to protect the area from the effects of the
waves of the Sulu Sea. An open area will also consist of about 16,000 square meters,
excluding paved roadways and the promenade area which extends about eight thousand
seven hundred (8,700) square meters.

The economy of Dapitan is fundamentally agricultural. The five leading crops are
coconut, palay, corn, and fruit trees such as bananas. Fish and marine products include
sardines, anchovies, round scads, yellowfin tuna, prawns, crabs, milkfish, seaweeds.
origin of the Name
The origin of the word Dapitan is history itself. It tells of Datu Pagbuaya who left his
realm in the island of Panglao, Bohol with 800 families to escape theTernatans at whose
hands his brother Dailisan met an untimely end. Uncertain about their destination when
asked about the exodus, the followers simply replied: Didto sa Pagadapitan.

The permanent Dapitan mission was founded in 1629 , headed by a Jesuit missionary Fr.
Pedro Gutierrez. The Spanish authorities adopted the local form of government that was
already existing then.
Dapitan remained a part of the Zamboanga province until 1952 when it was divided into
two provinces: Zamboangas del Norte and del Sur.
Dapitan became a chartered city on June 22, 1963 by virtue of R.A. 3811 signed by
President Diosdado Macapagal. Formally organized on November 12, 1963, Dapitan
became the first chartered city in Zamboanga del Norte. Officially called the Shrine City
of the Philippines, Dapitan City holds a special place in history as it once sheltered
national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal while on exile July 17, 1892 to July 31, 1896.

Dapitan City lies on the northwestern coast of the island of Mindanao. It is a double
wedge-shaped mass of land bounded on the north by the Sulu Sea, and linked on the
south by the municipalities of La Libertad and Mutia, on the east by the municipalities of
Sibutad and Rizal, and on the west by Dipolog City and the municipality of Polanco.

The city has a total land area of 29,521 hectares and is 14 kilometers from Dipolog City.
The 50 stars on its official seal represent its 50 barangays.
Climate
Dapitans climate is characterized by rainfall more or less evenly distributed throughout
the year.
Warm months are April and May while cold months are December, January, and
February.
Rainiest months are January, June, July, October, November, and December.
Population
Dapitans population by May, 2000 was estimated at 68,000. Literacy is at a high 98%.
Languages/Dialects Spoken
Ninety percent of the total population speaks Cebuano with the remainder speaking
Subanon, Bicolano, Hiligaynon or Ilonggo, and Chabacano. High literacy shows local
residents speaking English and Filipino, with the older generation also speaking Spanish.

Dapitan City Plaza
The present City Plaza which has an area of more or less one hectare
(2.711 acres) is the very same plaza which Dr. Jose Rizal developed and beautified with
the assistance of Gov. Ricardo Carcinero. His plan was to beautify it and make it
comparable to the ones he saw in Europe. Rizal provided the lighting system for the area
by placing tree trunks on each of which was hung a coconut oil lamp all at the cost of

Two stories to a name

Nobody can exactly place the roots of the name Pagadian. Two story versions,
however, contest the claim to determining the origin of the name given to this city.
But even before its present name was coined, settlers from far-flung regions of Luzon and
the Visayas, as well as neighboring towns of Mindanao, arrived to mingle with the
Subanens and Muslims who were the earliest inhabitants in what is now the city proper.
Its first name at that time was Talpokan, meaning a place of numerous springs.
Coming to the stories: Version 1 somberly tells of a large number of early Christian
settlers dying of malaria, a dreaded disease those days. The tragedy resulted in the place
being named Pangad-yean A Place of Prayer.
Version 2 is more cheerful. It tells of a settler from Luzon asking natives what the name
of the place was. As he was asking the question, his eyes strayed to a flock of birds
(native name: gagadian) winging their way above. The native, presuming the stranger
was asking about the birds, readily answered: Gagadian.

As time passed, Pangadyean and Gaga-dian merged and evolved into Pagadian.
Brief History
Pagadian, a former barrio of the town of Labangan of the lone province of Zamboanga,
became a municipality on March 23, 1937 through Executive Order No. 77 of the late
President Manuel L. Quezon.
Its ascendancy was due to the eager initiative of then Assemblyman Juan S. Alano.
Hon. Jose Sanson was the first appointed mayor of Pagadian. After his brief tenure as
town Presidente, a regular election was held with the Hon. Francisco Conso-lacion
becoming the first elected municipal mayor.

T. Lim authored Republic Act No. 711, dividing Zamboanga into two provinces
Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur, on June 6, 1952.
Pagadian became the capital town of Zamboanga del Sur which was itself inaugurated on
September 17, 1952. Pagadian became a chartered city on June 21, 1969 through
Republic Act No. 5478.

Situated on the northeastern side of the region, Paga-dian City is the gateway to
Zamboanga del Sur.
It is also a point of entry to the cities of Ozamis, Iligan, and Cotabato.
Its rolling terrain encompassing both residential and commercial districts, reminis-cent of
the former Crown Colony, has earned for it the sobriquet Little Hongkong of the South.
Pagadian has a total land area of 333.8 square kilometers with 13 urban and 40 rural
barangays.
Climate
Pagadian City is dry from January to March and wet from April to December. It is not
affected by tropical storms and typhoons as it is out of the countrys storm paths.
Population and Languages/ Dialects Spoken
Pagadian City, per the 2000 census, had 142,515 inhabitants. Residents generally speak
Cebuano-Visayan. A good number speak English,Tagalog, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Subanen,
and Chabacano.
Muslims in the province also speak the dialects of the Maguindanao,Tausugs, Iranuns,
and Samas.

Mt. Susong Dalaga

Also found in barangay Lourdes, 32 kms. from Pagadian proper and 10 kms. from the
barangay center, Susong Dalaga is a semi-perfect cone with good forest cover. It can be
reached by horseback.

Mt. Palpalan
This is the promontory within the Paga-dian City area on whose apex are located the
transmitters of major commercial communications networks.
About 30 minutes of steep climbing from the boundary of Pagadian City and Dumalinao
municipality along the Zamboanga-Pagadian national highway.
From 684 feet above sea level, Mt. Palpalan gives a sweeping vista of urban Pagadian
City, neighboring municipalities, and the deep blue waters of Pagadian Bay.

Kendis Cave
Located in Barangay Datagan, 10 km. from Pagadian poblacion; 12 kms. via Danlugan
(allweather road), 2 km. trail and approximately 45 min. hike); cave length - 200 meters
more or less; cave width = 5 meters; cave height = 4 meters; water flow = 2 barrels per
second; surroundings is upland farm with rocky soil. Kendis Cave is an open-end cave
with plants inside; has large overhead crevices with two other interiors. Can be reached
on horseback.

Lison Valley Waterfalls

Lies 42 kms. northwest of Pagadian poblacion and is situated at Barangay Lison Valley,
cropping from of approximately 20-25 meters.
Its 20-meter diameter spherical-shaped basin with cool and invigorating water is ideal for

Zamboanga Sibugay

The Birth of a Province

There had been many attempts to carve up the large province of Zamboanga del Sur as
far back as the decade of the 60s at the time when the late Representative Vincenzo
Sagun filed in the Sixth Congress Bill No. 17574.
On its heels came several more legislative initiatives, among them Parliamentary Bill No.
2795, of Parliament Members Antonio Ceniza, Manuel Espaldon, Hussein Loong,
KalbiTupay and Minister Romulo Espaldon; House Bill No. 982 of the late Cong.
Wilfredo Cainglet together with then Congressman Isodoro E. Real, Jr. and Antonio H.
Cerilles; and House Bill No. 8546, of former Congresswoman Belma Cabilao. But the
bills did not prosper and later languished in the archives.
In 1993, businessman turned politician Jose CabaralTiu, started a movement called the
Zamboanga Occidental Movement. This created a wave of political consciousness in the
then 3rd District of Zamboanga del Sur that swelled until the momentum for a separate
province became inexorable.
During the May 1997 Barangay Elections, a Peoples Initiative on the issue of a separate
province was conducted. The result: an overwhelming majority of voters coming out in
favor of the new province.
The process ended with the issuance and signing into law of Republic Act 8973 by then
President Joseph E. Estrada.
In February 2001, the province of Zamboanga Sibugay came into existence with the town
of Ipil leading 15 other towns in composing the Zamboanga Peninsulas newest province.

Sibugay -the Name

Zamboanga Sibugay got its name from the big river that wends its way through several of
the provinces major towns.
How the river got its name which it then passed on to the province is told in an anecdote.
Whats the name of this river? was the question asked by a visitor to the town datu, as
they paddled down the river.
Since the paddles were making too much noise in the water, the datu did not understand
and requested the visitor to come closer to be able to hear him clearly and in the Subano
tongue, said Sibug ari bagay meaning Come closer, my friend.
Thus did the river come to be known as such.
Geography/Political Subdivisions

Zamboanga Sibugay is bounded on the southeast by Zamboanga City, on the north by

Baliguian and Gutalac in Zamboanga del Norte, the municipality of Bayog, Zamboanga
del Sur on the east, and on the south by Dumanquillas Bay and Sibuguey Bay.
There are 4 islands in the province, namely: Olutanga, Laginugan, Letayen and Polalaum
Lutangan.
Population
Based on the 2000 census, the total population of the province is 497,239.
Languages/Dialects Spoken
Since many of the provinces inhabitants are migrants from the Visayas, the predominant
dialect is Cebuano.
English & Filipino are also spoken, given the brisk commercial climate specially in Ipil,
the capital town, where an enclave of the Subanens also reveals the unique tribal dialect.
The Province of Zamboanga Sibugay has a total land area of 3,363.22 sq. km. It is
divided into 2 provincial districts. There are 16 municipalities and 386 barangays.
There are 13 river channels and 6 marine bays or fishing grounds.
The marine water coastline stretches to a length of about 3,664 km., a rich resource for 13
coastal municipalities and 78 coastal barangays.
Climate
The climate of Zamboanga Sibugay is mild and moderate.Annual rainfall varies from
1,599 mm in drier areas to
3,500 mm in the wettest areas.
Temperature is relatively warm and constant throughout the year, ranging from 22C to
35C.
Ethnic Distinctions Major Industries
Zamboanga Sibugay is mineral-rich and fertile. Its coastlines are likewise resource-rich
and support seaweed farming and fishing. Fishponds abound in Payao and Siay.
Leading industrial activities of the province are agricultural and mineral-based.
At the top of the list are rice and corn milling, food processing, rattan and wood furniture
production. However, new players in the field include manufacturing of concrete
products and others.
Subanen weaving is evocative of the tribes color and culture.
Manganese reserves are found in Titay while non-metallic elements such as limestone
and marble abound in Olutanga and Ipil, respectively. On the other hand, coal reserves
are abundant in Malangas, Imelda, Diplahan and Payao, with Malangas primarily known
as a key coal mining area.
About 13 companies applied for mining claims of different mineral types under Mineral
Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) from the Bureau of Mines and Geosciences.

As is common in the Zamboanga provinces of the peninsula region, the Subanen tribe is
the dominant cultural community in Zamboanga Sibugay with concentrations found
particularly in the town of Ipil.

Olutanga Sea Snake Sanctuary

Located in the middle of the sea, get a glimpse of an estimated 10,000 sea snakes or
walo-walo peacefully communing in a bamboo hut formerly occupied by a seaweed
farmer and his family. No visitor dares visit the sanctuary unless escorted by the owner,
who is believed to be be able to communicate with the poisonous reptiles, to avoid
being bitten. An adjoining hut serves as a viewing deck.

Easily accessible by any vehicle, the Moalboal Caves in Titay offer a good experience for
every tourist. Be mesmerized by the various shapes of stones carved by time and
elements over the years.
Buluan Island
Enjoy swimming and snorkeling around the 24-hectare island just 30 minutes away from
Barangay Buluan. From the island, one can see agar-agar farmers busy in their farms and
nearby mangroves with majestic Mt. Palina as the backdrop.

Tungawan Double Treat

A tourist will findTungawan a haven for jaded souls seeking solitude. Bangaan Islands
white sand beach is perfect for a picnic. A quick swing to a nearby 880hectare marine
sanctuary can also be arranged. Equally impressive is cove-shaped Looc Labuan Beach

Telephone service in Zamboanga ibugay is provided by the Philippine Long Distance
Telephone Company (PLDT) to enable two-way domestic and overseas calls to and from
Ipil, Kabasalan, Malangas, and Buug.
Public Calling Offices have been set up in the municipalities of Imelda, Ipil, and
Malangas. Radio and telegraphic services are provided, on the other hand, by PT & T,
RCPI, and BuTEL.
The province has five FM stations, a cable TV company, and VHF radio clubs. It is also
on the worldwide web with its own website.
Mail service in and to all municipalities is handled by the Philippine Postal Corporation
with branches in all 16 towns.
Private forwarders like JRS, LBC, DHL and others also handle mail and parcel delivery
throughout the province.

Isabela City
A Little of History
Isabela City is the seat of the Provincial Government and the capital of the island
province, which with its islets lies in the waters of the Celebes Sea, the Moro Gulf and
the Sulu Sea, situated at the tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula.
In ancient times, the island province was called Taguima, while Isabela was referred to
by its ethnic groups (theYakans, Samal Banguinguis, Badjaos, andTausugs) as
Pasangan, a name that still holds among the natives. In 1844, the Spaniards occupied
Pasangan, and in July of the following year, the place was named Isabela, in honor of
Queen Isabel II of Spain by Don Ramon Lubo, Marine Chief of Zamboanga and Don
Cayetano Suarez de Figueroa, Governor of the District.
During the Spanish Regime and the American Occupation, Basilan was part of the
Zamboanga Province that then also included Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del
Norte. In 1937, the City of Zamboanga came into existence and made Basilan a part of
the newly created city.
On July 1, 1948 by virtue of Republic Act No. 288, sponsored by then Congressman Juan
S. Alano, Basilan Island became a chartered city, separating it from the City of
Zamboanga. It had three districts, namely -Isabela, Lamitan, and Maluso. Mayor
issued P.D. No. 356 creating 356 and increasing the area of

On December 11, 1975, PD No. 840 was issued by President Marcos reducing the
number of municipalities comprising the province from ten to seven, namely: Isabela,
Lamitan, Maluso, Lantawan, Sumisirp,Tipo-Tipo, and Tuburan.The former city of
Basilan and the municipality of Malamawi were absorbed by the municipality of Isabela.
On December 12, 1975, Atty. Ricardo G. Mon, number one councilor of the defunct city
of Basilan, took his oath of office as Mayor of Isabela Municipality before Regional
Commissioner Rear Admiral Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City. On January 1, 1976,
he officially assumed as mayor of the municipality of Isabela.
On March 5, 2001 Republic Act No. 9023 An Act Converting the Municipality of
Isabela, Province of Basilan into a component city to be known as the City of Isabela
was signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Then on April 25, 2001, Isabeleos
ratified the new status of Isabela.
Geography
Isabela City is in the northern part of the Basilan island mainland and is approximately 17
nautical miles from Zamboanga City.
The city has a total land area of 22,373 hectares, part of which is distributed to the islands
of Malamawi and Balatanay.
Isabela City has 45 barangays, 10 of which are coastal. It has a total land area of 22,333
hectares.
Climate
Isabela City has evenly distributed rainfall and temperature during the year. The dry
season runs from December to April while the rainy season prevails from May to
November.
Population & Ethnic Distinction
As of 2000, Basilans population stood at 326,000 people. Of this number, Isabela City
accounts for 73,032.
Christians and a substantial percentage of Muslims from different tribal groups such as
the Tausugs, Samal Bangingihs, and Yakans make up the population of Isabela. Tribal
fishermen, farmers, small-store and market vendors favor the traditional native attire.
Men of theYakan tribe wear the sawal tight-fitting pants, usually black in color, the badyo
for a shirt, also tight-fitting and usually black, and the kandit, a piece of cloth tied around
the head. Other Muslims wear kantiw, loose cotton pants with a waist string or garter. The
Muslim women wear sablay or habol, a large piece of cloth wound around the body,
hanging on the shoulder, or a patadyong worn from the waist down.
Yakan women wear tight-sleeved blouses with decorative buttons. Others have blouses
with loose hanging sleeves.
The Samals, Badjaos and Tausugs are mostly fishermen.They love to stay along the
coastal areas of this island province.TheYakans are farmers who dwell in the
hinterland.Their women are expert in weaving multi-colored cloth.
The Chinese, Americans and migrants from Luzon andVisayas later came and settled in
the various parts of the island.
But now, Isabelas citizenship is 99.17% Filipinos, 0.05% Chinese, and 0.01% American.
Others constitute 0.77%.

There are 66 dialects spoken in the City of Isabela. Approximately 30.75% of the people

Major Industries
Isabela City is basically agricultural with a few industries, the foremost of which are
rubber-based, given Basilans status as the countrys leading rubber producer. Other crops
produced include coconut, (copra trading is the main commercial activity) coffee, black
pepper, and African palm oil. Its waters, specially near the Pilas Islands, are rich fishing
grounds for particularly tuna and mackerel. Seaweeds are also cultivated along some
coastal areas.

The easiest way to get to Isabela City is from Zamboanga City. A combination of fast
ferries and regular vessels ply the Zamboanga Port-Isabela Port. Modern fast crafts make
the trip in about 30 minutes. Older vessels take about an hour longer.

Sumagdang Beach
A natural site for swimming, passing through coconut plantations, small rice fields, and
fish ponds. Only 4 kms from Isabela proper and easily accessible by jeepney, tricycle, or
bus.

Balas Beach
A cove-shaped beach about 25 minutes away from the town hall; ideal for swimming,
boating, fishing, water skiing, and snorkeling.

Sta. Isabel Cathedral

Named in honor of the patron saint of Isabela City. Located in the heart of the town, this
pet project of former Bishop Jose Ma. Querexeta is of modern architectural design.
Beside the cathedral is Claretcraft, a display center for native handicraft such as bags,
mats, all fashioned from buri and the uniqueYakan cloth.

plantation now owned and run by a local cooperative.
Isabela Fish Market
If a yearning for the sweet succulent flesh of fresh fish tickles the visitors palate, then
this is the place to be. Fishermen catches for the day are amply displayed for sale in this
market and the variety of marine delicacies (as well as the prices) entices.
