Our Time Has Come.

By Susan Hill

Richmond Early Childhood Association Co-President

There has never been a better time to work in the field of Early Childhood! Research over the last
generation has completely changed the business of preschool. We now have the benefit of looking
back over centuries of attitudes, theories and philosophies towards children.
We have witnessed a gradual change in attitudes toward children over time beginning with the ancient idea that children were simply incomplete adults, to the 17th and 18th century notion that children should be seen and not heard.
Many now view childhood as a sacred space, where life is
filled with playing, learning, socializing and exploring. Some
believe that life should be happy and trouble free where
there are no worries, and children are protected from adult responsibilities. Others argue that we have raised a generation of
spoiled adults, who cannot face the realities of a complex and
tumultuous world. They were not brought up in ways that fostered responsibility, resourcefulness and respect.
Having come through the storm of debate over the last 25
years, it occurs to me that we are on the cusp of a healthy view
of childhood, recognizing the critical impact learning and relationships have from the very beginning of life. Evidence based
practice is being put into place, and various disciplines, such as
health, safety, education and the social sciences all have contributions to make towards a holistic approach to raising human
beings.

Advocacy

As we move towards best practices in early education, we discover again and again how learning begins in the womb. Children recognize voices they heard before they emerge into the outside world. Watching childrens responses to external stimuli give us clues to sensory development. Brain domains have been scientifically identified, and teaching has been modified to provide activities that engage the senses and stimulate synapse connections.
It is a challenge to keep up with new developments and research in this amazing field! The world has
opened up a wonderful opportunity for every single lover of young children, where even the sky is no
longer the limit!
Lets continue to support and encourage one another on this journey into the future. Its all good
news.
