B) Reading Aloud
1 The man with thirteen jobs
2 He is a postman, a policeman, a fireman, a taxi driver, school-bus driver, and a boatman. He is also an ambulance man,
accountant and undertaker. Lastly, he is a petrol attendant and bar man.
3 Thomas lives and works on the island of Gigha in the west of Scotland. Only 120 people live on Gigha, but in summer, 150
tourists come by boat every day.
4 Every weekday Thomas gets up at 6am and makes breakfast for the hotel guests. At 8pm, he drives the islands children to
school. At 9am, he collects the post from the boat and delivers it to all the houses on the island. He also delivers the beer to the
islands only pub. Then he helps his wife, Margaret, in the shop.
5 Thomas says that Margaret likes being busy too. We never have holidays and we dont like watching television. In the evenings,
Margaret makes supper and I do the accounts. At 10pm, we have a glass of wine and go to bed. Perhaps our life isnt very exciting,
but we like it the way it is.
C) Grammar 1: Forms of the Verb
- A verb is an action. A verb can take four forms: a) Simple Present Tense; b) Simple Past Tense; c) Present Participle; and d) Past
Participle.
- The simple present tense is used to express habitual actions or actions which take place regularly.

- The simple present tense is also used to express truths.


- Four forms the verb eat can take:
a) Simple Present Tense: I eat a slice of bready every morning.
b) Simple Past Tense: I ate a slice of bread yesterday morning.
c) Present Participle: I am eating a slice of bread now.
d) Past Participle: I have eaten a slice of bread.
In c) and d), the participates of eat are used with am and have. Other helping words are is and has.
- Heres one way to form Present Principles from Present Tense: add ing. To form Past Participles from Past Tense, add ed.
