PLANNING of a WEBSITE

INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
ADDIE- model

TOPIC: Teaching and learning of PARTS OF SPEECH

Grade 6

ANALYSIS
In getting to know the learners’ proficiency with computers, a survey was conducted
amongst my Grade 6 learners (119 in total) and the following was discovered:

59 learners are in possession of cell phones;

102 learners say they can use cell phones beyond just answering and making
calls;
35 learners have access to computers outside of school;
53 learners say that they can and do use computers sometimes;
18 learners own computer games (e.g. Playstation); and
70 claim that they can play/have played computer games and can follow
instructions to proceed to various levels and to save certain stages.

Judging from the above, I believe that learners wouldn’t find it too difficult to interact
with LEARNING on a computer.

I would have to, however, design on an elementary level so that the majority will
be able to benefit from the INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN.

In considering the teaching approach, I would incorporate a little of each of the

Behaviourist, Cognitivist and Constructivist theories of learning.

The form of the content will be the following:

• Reading of content
• Responding to instructions
• Interacting with content by way of answering questions
• Getting on-line feedback
DESIGN
The following needs consideration before the DESIGN can be undertaken:

SKILLS: Learners will be able to navigate through the instructions and

complete the tasks set.

KNOWLEDGE: Learners will be able to identify different Parts of Speech.

ATTITUDES/BELIEFS: Learners will be able to identify and use Parts of

Speech in different contexts.

DEVELOPMENT
When learners have mastered the responses to questions in the DESIGN phase,
further pages will be set up to EXPLAIN and TEST learners’ knowledge of
APPLICATION of the Parts of Speech in various contexts.

The degree of complexity will be increased. (This design/development will be of

special benefit for the advanced learners).

The types of assessment herein would include:

Multiple choice

Crosswords

Close/open procedure

Identification

Application

All of the above will be accompanied by relevant feedback e.g.:

Incorrect=go back to page... or correct=proceed to page/question....

The development phase will also employ LINKS for NAVIGATION so that
learners can go back and forth in the instructional design depending on their
level of proficiency/progress with regards to the PARTS of SPEECH.

These NAVIGATIONAL LINKS will also be of benefit to the teacher in

updating information pages; making amendments to the INSTRUCTIONAL
DESIGN especially if it is noticed that learners are not making the desired
progress.
IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION
The following will have to be taken into consideration in order to improve future
design:
 Did learners learn what they were supposed to?
 Were the instructions clear and unambiguous?
 Was the computer in itself a hindrance or not?
 Is the environment conducive to DIGITAL INSTRUCTION?

A summative assessment will help to establish shortcomings in relation to the

above-mentioned points.

A questionnaire will be designed in order to ascertain the effectiveness of the

Instructional Design.

CONCLUSION
ADDIE is an ongoing process that has to be in a continuous state of
Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation and Development if
future Instructional Designs are to be successful and effective.
