Withauserinterfacebasedondirectmanipulation,
Androidisdesignedprimarilyfortouchscreenmobile

withspecializeduserinterfacesfortelevisions
(AndroidTV),cars(AndroidAuto),andwristwatches
(AndroidWear).TheOSusestouchinputsthatloosely
correspondtorealworldactions,likeswiping,tapping,
pinching,andreversepinchingtomanipulateonscreen
objects,andavirtualkeyboard.Despitebeing
primarilydesignedfortouchscreeninput,ithasalso

onemillionAndroidapplications("apps")published,
andover50billionapplicationsdownloaded.[12]An
AprilMay2013surveyofmobileapplication
developersfoundthat71%ofthemcreateapplications
forAndroid[13]another2015surveyfoundthat40%of
fulltimeprofessionaldevelopersseeAndroidasthe
"priority"targetplatform,whichismorethaniOS
(37%)orotherplatforms.[14]AtGoogleI/O2014,the
companyrevealedthattherewereoveronebillion
activemonthlyAndroidusers,upfrom538millionin
June2013.[15]
Android'ssourcecodeisreleasedbyGoogleunder
opensourcelicenses,althoughmostAndroiddevices
ultimatelyshipwithacombinationofopensourceand
proprietarysoftware,includingproprietarysoftware
developedandlicensedbyGoogle.[3]Initially
developedbyAndroid,Inc.,whichGoogleboughtin
2005,[16]Androidwasunveiledin2007,alongwiththe
foundingoftheOpenHandsetAllianceaconsortium
ofhardware,software,andtelecommunication

Mobile),[24]andChrisWhite(headeddesignandinterfacedevelopmentatWebTV[16])todevelop,in
Rubin'swords,"smartermobiledevicesthataremoreawareofitsowner'slocationandpreferences".[16]
Theearlyintentionsofthecompanyweretodevelopanadvancedoperatingsystemfordigitalcameras.
Though,whenitwasrealizedthatthemarketforthedeviceswasnotlargeenough,thecompanydiverted
itseffortstowardproducingasmartphoneoperatingsystemthatwouldrivalSymbianandMicrosoft
WindowsMobile.[25]Despitethepastaccomplishmentsofthefoundersandearlyemployees,AndroidInc.
operatedsecretly,revealingonlythatitwasworkingonsoftwareformobilephones.[16]Thatsameyear,
Rubinranoutofmoney.StevePerlman,aclosefriendofRubin,broughthim$10,000incashinan
envelopeandrefusedastakeinthecompany.[26]
InJuly2005,GoogleacquiredAndroidInc.foratleast$50million,whosekeyemployees,including
Rubin,MinerandWhite,stayedatthecompanyaftertheacquisition.[11][16]Notmuchwasknownabout
AndroidInc.atthetime,butmanyassumedthatGooglewasplanningtoenterthemobilephonemarket
withthismove.[16]AtGoogle,theteamledbyRubindevelopedamobiledeviceplatformpoweredbythe
Linuxkernel.Googlemarketedtheplatformtohandsetmakersandcarriersonthepromiseofprovidinga
flexible,upgradablesystem.Googlehadlinedupaseriesofhardwarecomponentandsoftwarepartnersand
signaledtocarriersthatitwasopentovariousdegreesofcooperationontheirpart.[27][28][29]
SpeculationaboutGoogle'sintentiontoenterthemobilecommunicationsmarketcontinuedtobuildthrough
December2006.[30]Anearlierprototypecodenamed"Sooner"hadacloserresemblancetoaBlackBerry
phone,withnotouchscreen,andaphysical,QWERTYkeyboard,butwaslaterreengineeredtosupporta
touchscreen,tocompetewithotherannounceddevicessuchasthe2006LGPradaand2007Apple
iPhone.[31][32]InSeptember2007,InformationWeekcoveredanEvalueservestudyreportingthatGoogle

OnNovember5,2007,theOpenHandsetAlliance,aconsortiumof

4.4.4"KitKat"appearedasasecurityonlyupdateitwasreleasedonJune19,2014,shortlyafter4.4.3was

Memorymanagement
SinceAndroiddevicesareusuallybatterypowered,Androidisdesignedtomanagememory(RAM)to
keeppowerconsumptionataminimum,incontrasttodesktopoperatingsystemswhichgenerallyassume
theyareconnectedtounlimitedmainselectricity.WhenanAndroidapplicationisnolongerinuse,the
systemwillautomaticallysuspenditinmemorywhiletheapplicationisstilltechnically"open",suspended
applicationsconsumenoresources(forexample,batterypowerorprocessingpower)andsitidlyinthe
backgrounduntilneededagain.Thisbringsadualbenefitbyincreasingthegeneralresponsivenessof
Androiddevices,sinceapplicationsdonotneedtobeclosedandreopenedfromscratcheachtime,andby
ensuringthatbackgroundapplicationsdonotconsumepowerneedlessly.[74][75]
Androidmanagestheapplicationsstoredinmemoryautomatically:whenmemoryislow,thesystemwill
beginkillingapplicationsandprocessesthathavebeeninactiveforawhile,inreverseordersincetheywere
lastused(oldestfirst).Thisprocessisdesignedtobeinvisibletotheuser,sothatusersdonotneedto
