Ballans Shaun Campbell has claimed the
Geoff Taylor Medal and made history.
The local midfielder took out 34 votes in the

CHFL Best and Fairest marking the leagues
second highest total in a single season.
Campbell was nine votes clear of Rickey

Ferraro from Hepburn, with Springbanks
Paul McMahon a further three behind.
The 25-year-old, who was recruited from
Ainslie this season, said he was pleasantly
surprised to receive the honour.
If you had told me that I was going to win
let alone by that much I probably would
have told you where to go, he said.
Its just crazy, I knew I had a good year but
not that good.
Campbell said he had enjoyed his first season

at Ballan and looked forward to continuing to
play in the league.
Its a good standard of footy here but its

also really laid back with such a community
environment. Everyone is here for a bit of fun
and to enjoy themselves and its good to see
the level of involvement from the netballers.

Announcing a funding pool
of $150,000, member for Ballarat Catherine King is urging local community groups
to apply.
Making the announcement
at the Lerderderg Library,
Ms King said the Federal governments Stronger
Communities Small Grants
Program is now taking
applications.
Funding is available for
not-for-profit organisations,
community groups and
councils in the Ballarat region, Ms King explained.
Any projects that improve
community
participation
and contribute to the vibrancy and viability of local communities could be eligible.
If you have an idea that
could improve the community and are part of a
community or not-for-profit
group with a local focus you
should consider applying to
this program.
The program will amount
to $150,000 this year, covering grants of between $5,000
and $20,000.
Applicants are required to
demonstrate matched contributions from other sources, whether from council,
state government or private
fundraising.

due by 4 September 2015

Community outrage at co-payment fee

Angry residents have told a
meeting that Ballan District
Health & Care did not ask
the community if it wanted
extra services that will be
paid for by the introduction
of a fee to see doctors.
The meeting, held at the
Mechanics Institute last
Wednesday with about 80
people in attendance, also
saw criticism of the lack of
community
consultation
before making the decision to introduce the $23
co-payment.
A number of people raised
questions about how the
hospital knows what the
community wants when it
has not asked anybody.
Its based on the number
of people who ring up and
cant get an appointment,
commuting people cant get
an appointment, our bookings up to 8pm are always
full, Mr Weaire, BDH&C

but if we had have listened we
would lose the doctors.

You never even asked anyone, one resident pointed
out, with Mr Weaire responding that the public
has told us.
Local resident Sally Leslie
raised a number of questions
at the meeting.
You have not asked the
community, we do not
know what it is based on;
its been going very well,
what has happened in the
last 12 months to make this
decision?
Hospital Board Treasurer
Ian Boyle responded.
We have not made one
single cent in 13 years, he
replied.
Ms Leslie asked Mr Weaire
to show her the needs
analysis.
There is a need, Mr
Weaire said.
Another resident asked
what the $23 will be spent
on, saying that services such
as the in-house pharmacy
and oncology nurse are not
needed because there is al-
ready a local pharmacy and

access to excellent oncology
services at Ballarat, just half
an hour away.
We are only a small hospital, do we really need those
services? she asked.
Mr Weaire responded, saying None of the $23 goes to
oncology, its about meeting
the salary expectations of
the doctors.
It costs $4,500 for them
to provide a service and
supplement a doctor, per
doctor per weekend, plus
accommodation.
Concerns were raised by
one resident that the fee will
mean that people on a low
income but who do not have
a health care card will not go
to the doctor as they wont
be able to afford to have the
initial $60 taken out of their
bank account, and have only
a partial refund.
We are going to have to
look at the impacts, those
who fall in-between the
gaps; if you have children,
they are free, Mr Weaire
told the meeting.
People write to me and I

have the responsibility as
CEO to read what you write
to me. There is room for us
to be a caring community,
somehow meeting the cost.
A resident said he did not
understand why the conversation could not have been
held before the meeting and
before the decision to introduce the fee was made.
It doesnt look like a caring
decision. There are people
who will be affected, a lot
of people are the working
poor, the resident said.
Mr Weaire said that following early research he
thinks that probably only
30 per cent will be actually
charged.
Mr Weaire said the copayment can be waived by a
doctor if he/she judges that
a person cannot afford it, a
point which Ms Leslie raised
at the meeting.
I dont think doctors
should be assessing my finance needs, she said.
Had a means test for the copayment been considered,
was another question from
the floor.
No, Treasurer Ian Boyle
said.
The
co-payment,
and
BDHC, were not without
support however.
We have the best health
service here, for the size of
the town, in the country,
one resident pointed out.

Board member and meeting MC - John Fabre also
spoke in favour of BDHC.
I live and work in this
community, and Im on committees here, we chose to
come and live here Im not
saying that just as a Board
member, I think our staff
at the hospital, the services
we provide are the envy of
many, he said.
The timing of the meeting
was also criticised, with residents saying that 5.30pm is a
difficult time to make after
work, while also questioning
the fact that only one meeting has been held, and that
it was held after the decision
to introduce a co-payment
had already been made.
Member for Ballarat Catherine King sent a representative, Dan Juleff, who took to
the microphone to use the
meeting platform as a political blame game.
To be blunt, it is the Abbott
government, he said in his
address, before being shut
down by loud shouting from
the objecting audience to his
presence.
Bulk Billing v Co-Payment

Resident Patrick Bonello told the meeting that he has
seen BDHC grow, and that he is concerned that the
issue of the co-payment distresses a lot of people in the
community.
I did a bit of research, and when I moved here I was
shocked that Ballan bulk-billed - in Melbourne everybody
charges, we need to cater for people out of hours, Mr
Bonello said.
However a survey of medical practices in the surrounding
Melton, Ballarat and the Daylesford/Hepburn areas told
a split story.
Out of four medical practices in Bacchus Marsh/Darley,
two bulk bill and two do not.
Two out of three medical centres in Melton bulk bill, while
two out of three medical centres in Ballarat reported that
they also bulk bill.
One medical centre questioned in Daylesford does not
bulk bill.
All presentations for emergency treatment at the Ballan
hospital will also pay the fee however Bacchus Marsh
Hospital bulk bills emergency patients.

Volunteers protecting us

Local emergency service volunteers can continue
to keep the community safe thanks to a $12.5
million boost in funding.
The current State Government has delivered the
2015-16 Volunteer Emergency Services Equipment
Program (VESEP) in order to help fund new
equipment and amenity upgrades.
Bacchus Marsh State Emergency Service unit is
one of a total of 43 VICSES units that will share in
more than $2 million.
Acting Regional Manager for the Mid-West Region,
Peter Keppel said the Bacchus Marsh and Hepburn
units would receive $30,000 to $35,000 in order to
purchase additional 4-wheel drive vehicles.
The vehicles will improve the units ability to
respond to incidents - especially searches, rescues
and trees falling over roads, he said.
Each unit contributes the remainder of the funds
required.
CFA brigades will benefit from 202 grants totalling
more than $7.1 million, including Bacchus Marsh,
Coimadai and Elaine.
Bacchus Marsh will receive over $65,000 for a new
field command vehicle and defibrillator, whilst
Elaine and Coimadai will receive close to $140,000
for room renovation and refurbishments.
Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett
said the 2015-16 Volunteer Emergency Services
Equipment Program (VESEP) would help volunteer
groups keep their communities safe.
The Andrews Labor Government recognises the
enormous contribution of our 90,000 volunteers
across the state and were pleased to support them
by helping to fund life-saving equipment and
vehicles, she said.
Volunteers are the backbone of our community.

Stage set for sequel

of Billie - the young homeless girl who was discovered
busking back in 2009.
Final Chapter tells the story

of a homeless girl turned famous by a music executive,
however as time goes on
she becomes a self-centred
star and loses her way. Upon

College art and drama teacher, Christopher Doughty, the
production will feature year
12 student Linzy Marsden who played the original role
of Billie when she was just
13-years-old.
Six years ago when our

year 12 students were in
year seven we staged the
show, which was very successful, and now those year
sevens have grown up and
so have their characters, Mr
Doughty said.
Linzy played the lead role
in the original story and has
been really heavily involved
returning home, she meets

someone new and a new
sensation is born.
Mr Doughty said the production would play on a
number of serious issues,
whilst providing entertainment through singing and
dancing.

it. They are so excited for
production week, which is
the biggest and best week for

everyone involved, he said.
A production like this

gives them something to
look forward to and it is also

Ian MacFarlane just cant
catch a break.
The Moorabool News has
previously reported on the
Balliang East residents
plight and fight for the
removal of a Melbournebased park charge, yet after
a bright red letter from the
debt collectors landed in his
mailbox it seems the issue
will remain unchanged.
Sent on behalf of City West
Water on August 13, the letter titled LEGAL ACTION
IMMINENT stated that Mr
Macfarlane had 72-hours to
pay his overdue debts.
After 30-years of refusing
to pay the annual fee, which
is used to maintain popular city reserves such as the
Melbourne Zoo, Mr MacFarlane has accumulated an
outstanding balance of over
$800.
After receiving the letter
I made a payment of about
half the total amount just to
get them filed back for a little

while but the problem is still
the same, he said.
I rang City West Water as
recommended in the threatening letter and was eventually told that nothing further
could be done for us case
closed and pay your bill.
Managing Director for City
West Water, Anne Barker
said properties subject to
the charge were those that
lie within the Urban Parks
Boundary, including properties east of the Little River/
Balliang Creek and south of
Spring Hill Road.
However Mr MacFarlane is
one of just 30 homes that are
subjected to the charge, after
a number of Balliang East
residents were made exempt
back in 2006.
Its still extremely annoying and timewasting, and I
dont have a lot of resources
to be able to continue to fight
for what I believe is right,
he said.
I found out that we cant go

to VCAT and legal aid told
me that the only possibility
for change is continuing to
do what we are doing by lobbying politicians and trying
to persuade City West Water
and Parks Victoria that they
are in the wrong.
Mr MacFarlane said he was
still waiting on a response
from Minister for Environment, Climate Change &
Water, Lisa Neville, after he
was promised a personalised letter from her over six
weeks ago.
Im not sure what I can do
from here. We are going to
have to come up with some
sort of new avenue, because
although Ive nearly exhausted all my options - the
fight continues. In my case
its been 30-years, so I dont
plan to just give up now.
Hon Lisa Neville was contacted for comment, however The Moorabool News
received no response.
Local green thumbs are being encouraged to get their

hands dirty and make Moorabool a greener place.
The Friends of the Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh will be host to a
tree-planting day next week,
which will aim to plant 400
indigenous species of trees
and shrubs.
Group president Greg Ley
recalled the state of the riverbanks just two years ago,
when they were what he
referred to as an ugly, weed
infested mess.
Weve chosen some of the
worst areas to improve and
you can really appreciate
the difference now that the
plants are becoming established, he said.
Not only do we want to
improve the look of the river
but also provide a better habitat for our native animals
such as the koalas, platypus,
echidnas and wallabies.
The Friends of the Werribee River through Bacchus Marsh tree-planting
day will be held on Sunday
September 13 from 9:30am
12:30pm.
The site is located off Werribee Vale Road, one-kilometre upstream of Grant Street.

Melton Regional Hospital.
Darley couple Kimberley and Daniel MORRIS have

welcomed their first child, a little girl. Born on Monday 24
August at 2.24pm, Andie Sophia MORRIS weighed 6lb 5oz
(2.89kg).

Bacchus Marsh was a sea of purple

on the weekend as local businesses
showed their support for the fight
against cancer.
The decorative event was held in anticipation of the annual Relay for Life,
which will come to town this September for the eighth consecutive year.
Moorabool Relay for Life coordinator, Gillian Loughman said she hoped
the promotion was able to bring more
awareness to the town.
It was to promote the fact that the
relay will be here in less than three
weeks, so hopefully we will get a few
more teams participating, she said.
Last year we raised just under $99,000
and I would love to be able to match or
better that this year, however we will
need a lot more teams to do so.
Over 200 participants currently
make up a total 18 teams, however Ms

Loughman said she hopes to see those
numbers double.
We are all trying to do something
to make an influence so that we can
all live in a cancer free world and it
would be great to see the whole town
get down to see what an amazing event
Relay for Life really is, she said.
We have gone all out with the market
stalls this year in the hope of encouraging a large amount of traffic. We have
36 in total, which will offer everything
from quilts and candles to Tupperware
and spices. Its just such a great atmosphere and if we can get as many people
down as possible it will only add to
that.

The burden of rate

capping in Moorabool

A submission to the Essential Services Commission
will explain why a new rates
capping policy will disadvantage Moorabool Shire
Council.
The submission, prepared
by CEO Rob Croxford, was
approved at a special meeting of councillors last week.
The meeting was called as
a tight deadline provided
for the submission meant
that it had to be sent before
this weeks ordinary council
meeting.
They appear to have expedited the process by one
month, it looks like the ESC
will make a report to the
Minister in October and itll
go to Parliament in November, Mr Croxford said.
The submission outlines
councils response to the
controversial rates capping
policy which the Labor Government held as an election
promise; the policy means

that councils cannot raise
rates above the CPI level
without first making a case
to the ESC.
Mr Croxford said that
the submission outlines
primarily the impact the
rates capping will have on
expenditure.
We need to look at the revenue side of things the cap
will be on general rates, of
3.05 per cent, assuming the
ESC goes ahead with that,
and our long-term financial
plan talks about increments
of five per cent, Mr Croxford explained.
Essentially well have a
revenue reduction in year
one of around $600,000,
or two per cent and two
per cent from a $45 million
budget is significant, were
going to have to look at how
we approach that.
He said that councils approach has already been to
review all overheads including insurance, utilities,

operation costs for the vehicle fleet, bank charges and
other aspects of council as
part of the continuous business excellence program
which saw the organisation
save $1 million in the last
financial year.
All of those we have been
trawling through to ensure
we get the best value we can
achieve.
Theres also been changes to
the management structure
the position of General Manager of Corporate Services
was not replaced, reducing
management costs.
What we now continue to
do, is to talk about what our
levels of service are to the
community.
As an example of that, we
looked at our Family Daycare about two years ago
and we said thats a service
that another provider can
deliver, and well continue to

go through the organisation
asking questions through
council - asking whether or
not the services we deliver,
and the level of service we
deliver, are appropriate.
Its not just because the
ESC said we must reduce
our expenditure its something were doing anyway.
Mr Croxford outlined that
spending on infrastructure
may have to be cut as the
Capital Works Program
comes under scrutiny but
that its the last on the list,
given its importance to the
community.
We have a fairly big infrastructure gap - which is the
difference between what we
do spend on our infrastructure assets, compared to
what we need to spend, so
thats another issue that we
have to face.
Mr Croxford said that while
there is a variation frame-
work, where councils can

ask the ESC for permission
to raise rates above the CPI,
its a costly process.
The variation framework
is about going to the Commission and saying weve
done all these things, so
we can demonstrate - as we
did through the last budget
process where we clearly
showed the council and the
community that wed taken
a million dollars out of our
costs - by doing that we
could say a rate increase of
around three to four per cent
is achievable.
But we need to think what
our growing communities
need through to 2041.
Well need to go to the ESC
in February/March of next
year, if the council approves
us going to ask for the variation, and then we have to set
out the case to the ESC saying weve done all we possibly can to reduce costs, to be
efficient, however it doesnt
add up so we would like the

variation of one or two per
cent before we finalise our
budget.
However its a long process
and at the end of it, the ESC
can either approve the specified percentage variation
request or not theres no
middle ground.
Its going to require a lot
of energy and a lot of rigor
in the preparation and that
will require a lot of cost for
consultant studies, officers
costs, its not going to be an
easy process and we have to
set that into our financials as
well.
If the ESC was to say no,
then council would have to
further review expenditure
and find alternate sources of
income.
Ive got no doubt rates
capping will come in; it just
depends whether it gets
tweaked by the groups making submissions.

A marathon of words

The Lerderderg Library will
host the ultimate writing
challenge next month as a
group of authors take part in
a twelve-hour marathon.
Write-a-Thon for Refugees
is a not-for-profit campaign
that helps raise money for
the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre.
Bacchus Marsh poet and
fundraising organiser, Jennie Fraine said the aim of the
campaign was for writers to
use their skills in order to
help those in need.
It all started last year when
I noticed a website called
Writing for Refugees and
I thought that as a writer
I should also be supporting them. I asked if anyone
would be interested and a
few people said yes, we then
decided we would spend the
day writing and we would
get people to sponsor us,
she said.
By the time we finished
we had received so many

sponsors that we managed
to raise over $2000, which
we donated to various organisations including Book
Aid who provide books to
refugee camps, the Aboriginal Literacy Foundation and
the Asylum Seeker Resource
Centre.
The 2014 challenge was held
in the State Library of Victoria, with three authors contributing to the cause.
If you are a writer, you
spend the day writing from
8am to 8pm and you receive
sponsors anyway you can.
I offer to write poems for
people for a $10 donation. I
can write about literally anything, even if I dont know
much about it, Ms Fraine
said.
About 35-years ago I discovered I could write poetry
and I am so happy to be able
to use it to contribute to
those in need.
After attending a presentation held by Australian Vol-
unteers Abroad, Ms Fraine

said all of the money raised
from the 2015 Write-A-Thon
for
Refugees
challenge
would go directly to the
Asylum Seekers Resource
Centre.
This centre is staffed by
good-hearted
volunteers
with a commitment to social
justice and they dont receive
any government funding so
really its up to the community, she said,
I have lived in Bacchus
Marsh for eleven and a half
years and we are so lucky
because this is a very warm
and welcoming community,
and I strongly believe in
community humanity.
Write-a-Thon for Refugees
will be held at the Lerderderg Library, Main Street
Bacchus Marsh from 8am to
8pm on September 26.

Police
Rounds

Bacchus Marsh police were
called to a scene on Thursday after a man was allegedly spotted with a knife on
Young Street.
Sergeant Grey from the
Bacchus Marsh police station said whilst the situation
wasnt serious, the investigation was ongoing.
No one was harmed or under threat, he said.
We havent tended to anyone yet, however the police
did attend the area at the
time and have made some
inquiries, which are still
continuing.
A spokesperson for the
Young Street Preschool said
despite rumours, the man
did not approach the childcare centre.
One of the families informed the centre that there
had been an incident in the
area and the centre then
spoke to police, but nothing
was evident at the kindergarten, they said.
Bacchus Marsh CIU is investigating an incident that

occurred at the Greendale
Hotel in early August.
Detective Brian Mallock
confirmed that an assault
took place within the hotel
on August 8, but was unable
to provide any further information as the investigation
into the incident is ongoing.
Greendale publican Greg
Popple declined to comment.

The lion queens

Lions would not be helping
horses in nature, certainly
but in Ballan, the two have
come together to help some
of the Shires most vulnerable children.
The Ballan Lioness Club,
renowned for its impressive community donations
earned by the hard work of
its volunteers at their Steptoes opp shop, has donated
$2000 towards a CAFS-run
program.
From its Bacchus Marsh office, CAFS runs the HEAL
program bringing kids together with horses at the Mt
Wallace Equestrian Centre.
It provides the opportunity
for disadvantaged children
- often from troubled backgrounds - to learn to improve their behaviours and
to improve their psychological health through interacting with horses.
The horses help the kids
learn about themselves,
and have already shown
amazing results in assisting
special needs young people
with their mental health.
But donations are needed
to make the program more
accessible to more young
people there is a multitude
of expenses for the program
including arena hire and
equipment - especially with
this years cold winter.
This winter in particular

seedlings.

that one of the Lionesses has

We were just blown away
by the wonderful work they
do and the results they get,
Ms Moore said.
We thought wed give
them $2000 to help these underprivileged kids.
Businesses can sponsor a
child for one session at the

cost of $80, or for the full
eight-week program at $640.
A group can also be sponsored with four children at
$240 per session, or $1920 for
the full eight-week program.

it to occur on National Tree
day in July of each year.
Ms Day, who helped form
the local Arboretum Group
in March last year, said the
trees were very important
for the community.
Its about planning for
the future and because we

are planting bigger stock
now its good to have the
Scouts involved. Its all very
well with the native stock
because they come in little
tubes, but the bigger pots are
much heavier so its good to
have those extra hands, she
said.
Its also a really nice opportunity for the children.
You can measure a childs
life with a tree because you
see them both grow at the
same time, which I think is
quite a nice analogy.

Tasmania set to wield axe on forests
A couple of weeks ago I attended a gathering with 300

hundred or so locals at Wynyard (North West Tasmania)
over a bit of local bush that
was to be logged by Forestry
Tasmania. This bit of local
bush, a 49-hectare area, is
called by the locals, Lapoinya and by Forestry Tasmania, coupe FD053A. These
locals were meeting to oppose this logging. While the
local state and federal representatives were all invited
Senator Whish-Wilson was
the only one who attended.
Senator Whish-Wilson recently spoke of this logging
in the Senate. I thought it
was worth quoting from this
speech as it says so much
about our current political
mire.

began, recently, when the
late Malcolm Fraser passed

away, it was fascinating for
me, as a proud Green, to look
at his environmental track
record as a progressive
one could perhaps say one
of the last true Liberals. He
achieved some magnificent
outcomes for the environment. One that was near and
dear to my heart was the ban
on commercial whaling. He
had a leadership role in that.
Senator Wish-Wilson then
went on to talk of the former
Liberal Prime Minister, Mr
John Gorton who in a press
release from 1 July 1970 said,
The Commonwealth will
meet the reasonable legal
costs, including Counsels
fees, of five conservationist
bodies appearing before the
Royal Commission on Barrier Reef Petroleum Drilling.
Requests for financial assis-
tance for full-time legal representation were received

from the Australian Conservation Foundation and
four Queensland scientific
or conservationist organisations. Senator Whish-Wilson
goes on to say, Here we had
a Liberal Prime Minister
who financed a legal case by
conservationists to stop petroleum drilling in the Great
Barrier Reef.
And we have a current Liberal government threatening to prosecute and punish
such groups.
Then Senator Whish-Wilson spoke of Lapoinya. He
said, It is a tiny settlement
tucked away in deep valleys
adjacent to the Flowerdale
River catchment. It is not a
big place. Some would say
it is not a grand place, but it
is a special place, especially
to the locals who live in the

Wynyard area. This is shaping up to be a symbolic fight,
not just for the community
in Lapoinya, who want to
protect the area that they
have grown up in and all
their memories, all the special times they have had in
the area and the immense
value that they get and have
got out of this forest for generations; it is also symbolic
for the whole state. Forestry
Tasmania has been pretty
much bankrupt, in the figurative sense, and has not
been logging on a large scale
for many months. But it is
about to start up again soon,
and coupes such as Lapoinya are clearly under threat
in the logging madness that
we expect to see commence
again in October.
It is an unthinkable and
unprofitable approach, not

just for Tasmanias natural
heritage but also for the
economy. Forestry Tasmania expects, from this small
49-hectare coupe, to harvest
12,500 tonnes. As is often the
way, more than half of these
logs will be destined for the
woodchip mill.
Senator WhishWilson then
quoted one of the speakers
at the Wynyard gathering.
John Lawrence is a wellrespected economist, accountant, commentator on
financial matters and font
of all knowledge in matters
forestry and finance. He
has estimated that Forestry
Tasmania could expect to
get about $5,000 per hectare
in revenue at current market rates. He also estimates
that the cost of getting the
logs out will be about $6,000
per hectare, mostly because

roads and bridges need to
be built into the forest. This
equates to a cash loss of
$50,000 for the entire coupe.
On top of this, Forestry
Tasmania will have to write
down nearly $200,000 in
assets once the trees are
chopped down. If we add
carbon accounting costs, the
opportunity costs of logging these trees, then what
we are looking at is another
loss-making proposition for
Forestry Tasmania, which
is going to do an incredible
amount of damage to the social fabric of the community
in the Wynyard area who
have grown up around this
beautiful piece of landscape.
I am not so sure the behaviour of VicForests is any
better.

Youth meeting was not well
attended. However the quality of input from young people who contributed at the
Bacchus Marsh engagement
session I attended, was high
and to be commended.
I respond to Blackwood resident Daniel Emmerson who
is quoted in the MN saying
Paul Tatchell was the only
Councillor who bothered to
show up to the Ballan session. The article did not say
that on the following morning 20th August Cr. John
Spain and I attended a youth
session in Bacchus Marsh
along with service providers. It also does not state
that I attended the Bacchus
Marsh youth engagement
session and that I brought
my son with me who falls
in the target age group. It
WHATS ON
makes sense that a Ballan

Councillor would attend a
Ballan engagement session
and that a Bacchus Marsh
Councillor might attend Bacchus Marsh sessions.
The article states Mr Emmerson added that he is disappointed in the approach
that some councillors have
taken to the idea of a youth
space. He is quoted saying
how can, for example, a
well-to-do councillor from
upmarket Bacchus Marsh
ever relate to the struggles
of a teenager in Gordon
struggling with their sexuality, or someone experiencing
domestic violence. A youth
space is so important, and
council needs to pull the finger out...
Mr Emmerson should not
make public assumptions
about the life experiences

and financial background of
any of the Councillors. It is
insulting and does not recognise that all people experience challenges in life.
I left home at 16 and have
had a hard life. This gives me
an insight into youth issues
and makes me care about
improving youth services.
Mr Emmerson should not
assume Councillors are
well-to-do and could not
understand youth issues.
Youth issues affect all young
people regardless of location
and wealth.
My vision of a youth space
is a place where young people can participate in a range
of organised supervised
activities and know that if
they need crisis assistance or
guidance there will be someone to talk to and get help.

It is a positive step for Council to consult about youth
needs and the possibility of
a youth space.
I ask young people aged
12-25 to complete the youth
space survey on the Moorabool Youth Services facebook page. There is also a
separate survey for parents
and carers of young people
on this page.

Dear Editor,
I read with amazement
(SOS on rezoning, MN 25
Aug) the fence-sitting comments from both Cr Paul
Tatchell and Cr Tom Sullivan, regarding the traffic is-
sues that will be exacerbated

by a Bunnings or any other
bulky goods stores, being
built in Gisborne Road.
Really Mr Mayor, a traffic study is needed? When
almost every evening and
morning (and many other
times) traffic is at a stand still
from Lerderderg St to the
Freeway. What engineering
measures does Mr Sullivan
imagine could relieve the situation of cars crawling along
Gisborne Rd after work? Perhaps they could use the data
Bunnings collected, which is
sure to be unbiased.
If council really thinks jobs
will be created, then build
the stores in a more suitable
area of Bacchus Marsh.

There are a number of market indicators which chart

the statewide, and local,
performance of the property sector. This includes the
average length of time that
homes in each town or city
take to sell, known as median days on market.
The latest REIV data shows
a number of regional towns
across Victoria recorded significant falls in the median
days on market over the
year, reflecting the strength
of the property market in
these areas.
One of regional Victorias
strongest performers was in
the Geelong and surf coast
region of the state, with
homes in the coastal town of
Jan Juc selling faster in July
than the same period last
year, with the median number of days on market falling
20 days to 32.5.
The outer Geelong suburb
of Waurn Ponds which has
seen recent price gains was
another strong performer
with the number of days on
market also down 20 days
over the year to a median
of just 25 in July one of the
lowest statewide.
Substantial declines in days
on market were also recorded north of Melbourne
in the Goulburn Valley region. Homes in Yarrawonga,
Echuca, Benalla, Mooroo-
pna, Kialla, Kyabram and

Nagambie all sold faster
when compared with last
years figures.
The median number of days
on market for homes in Yarrawonga fell 53 days over the
year to 80 while homes in
Mooroopna also sold faster,
decreasing 43 days to 70.
Homes in Kialla had a median of 68.5 days on market - 30 days less than the
same period last year while
Nagambies median days on
market dropped 34 days to
84.
The number of days for a
home to sell in Kyabram fell
17 days; homes in Benalla
sold 16 days faster than the
same time last year and
Echucas median days on
market dropped by 10.5 days
to 63.5 days in July.
Other regional towns recording large decreases
in days on market were
Paynesville in the Gippsland region, down 67 days to
77.5, Point Lonsdale, down
39 days to 94 and Anglesea,
down 64.5 days to 110.5.
Regional towns within
commuting distance of Melbourne also experienced
declines in median days on
market with homes in Woodend selling 8.5 days faster
than July 2014 with a median
of 58.5 days while Longwarry, south-east of Melbourne
fell 21 days to 85.

In a blistering display,
the Senior Blues certainly
showed they are the real
deal and not to be underestimated. The Blues opened
tentatively in the first quarter and at the first break were
down by two goals but from
then on they were utterly
ruthless. Ballan did not allow their opponents to score
a goal after the first break.
Buninyong could only manage to score a total of two
points for the remainder of
the match. Up forward Dan
King booted four goals for
the day with another 7 goal
scorers. Shaun Campbell
had more than his share of
attention from the Bombers
and he reveled in the pressure. Campbell was ably assisted by Locky Herring and
Marcus Crook did a great
job as sweeper in defence.
On the wing Danny Mullane
ran his opponent ragged and
his two goals lifted the tempo of the game. In the final
quarter it became a feeding
frenzy for the Blues and the
whole squad went up a gear.
For the supporters it had
been a long time between
performances like this and
life members like Ray Smith
had a smile from ear to ear.
Ballan now take on the Gordon Eagles next Sunday in
the preliminary final and
the Blues will go in as under

dogs but on current form,
anything is possible.

18 players to fill the gaps.
The Blues were without Rod

sorely missed. The Eagles
opened strongly and had a
five goal buffer at the first
break and never looked
back. Marcus Darley and
Sam Sims were under the
pump in the backline and
the result could have been
far more distressing but
for their outstanding efforts. Mark Dunn battled
out the whole four quarters
and Brad Cox was the key
forward for the Blues. They
added some respectability to
the score board in the final
quarter but the damage had
been done. Trevor Davies
praised the efforts of the
players throughout the year
and to focus on next year.

but a late injury time out

few goals to just get the edge
as the girls ran out of time.
