Anytime youve got two of the most successful coaches in the state in one district, its
going to be tough to compete for the top
spot.
But with the top two teams with question
marks at the all-important quarterback spot, a
challenger might assume the district throne.
Both Catholic of New Iberias Brent Indest
and Notre Dames Lewis Cook have proved to
be master motivators through the years and
theyll need to be back at it again after losing
Jason Pellerin and Brad Stoma, respectively.
Pellerin and Stoma were two of the best
quarterbacks in the state and while both
teams will compete again for the 5-2A title,
theyll have to find consistency at that position
to travel as deep into the playoffs as their fan
bases have grown accustomed to.
Both Opelousas Catholic and Loreauville,
coached by Dane Charpentier and Trent Delahoussaye respectively, have talented squad
and are ready to pounce at any signs of weakness from the Panthers and the Pios.
OC has an athletic, experienced squad and
Charpentier has high expectations for his team
after returning several players from last years
10-win quarterfinal team.
The Vikings got the short end of the scheduling stick, though, and will have to play both
Notre Dame and Catholic-NI in hostile territory
this season, although Loreauville will travel to
play the Vikings.
The game that could decide the district is on
Nov. 6 when the Panthers take on the Pios at
Notre Dame on the last week of the season.

Jake Arceneaux (18), JaCeiry Linzer (23), Mark Hodge (75), Ronald

Bottom Line
This is an extremely talented
squad with plenty of experience to
fall back upon when times get
tough.
Arceneaux is a team leader from
the quarterback position and
works hard to perfect his craft at
that position. If the defense can
make strides forward, this is a
team that could be poised for a
deep playoff run.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
JaCeiry Linzer, RB
6-3, 235 pounds, Sr.
Linzer is a beast in the backfield
and is tough for anyone on the field
to bring down. If hes able to break
into the second level of defenses,
watch out because there might not
be many defensive backs in the state
capable of taking him down.
Jake Arceneaux, QB
6-1, 185 pounds, Sr.
The UL commit is the hardest
worker on the team and has a mastery of Desormeauxs passing attack.
By limiting turnovers and taking his
shots when he gets them, Arceneaux
can lead the Blue Gators far this
season.
Ronald Leblanc, WR
6-4, 190 pounds, Jr.
Leblanc is an explosive leaper
and doubles as a basketball star in
the spring. If his technique is on par
with his raw athleticism, Leblanc
gives Arceneaux the type of target
not many quarterbacks in the state
have the luxury of having.
Josh Hebert, S
5-9, 155 pounds, Jr.
Hebert led the team in interceptions as a sophomore and has had
one more year to grow into the
defensive system and get stronger.
Mark Hodge
6-1, 265 pounds, Sr.
Hodge is one of the four returning starters along the offensive line,
but the only senior. His experience
will help Linzer bust open plays
down the middle of opposing defenses.
Head Coach:
Ted Davidson.

ord: 122-37 overall; 116-33 at Acadiana.
Strengths
The Wreckin Rams are the two-time Class 5A state
champions and theyll try to ride the confidence from
that winning tradition again this fall. Acadiana will also
have to ride a talented defensive unit until the inexperienced offense finds its way.
Back on the line is Malik George at defensive end,
Kevin Moore at linebacker and the secondary duo of Javonte Edmond and Jayrin Wilson in the secondary.
There are a lot of newcomers around them, but talented ones. Dylan Brown and Blaise Davis will be counted on in the middle of the line, while Kyle Pierre, Donovan Collins and Joel Julien are embroiled in a tight battle
for playing time at linebacker. Bralen Trahan at cornerback and Jourdan Quibodeaux are the newcomers in the
secondary, but are expected to shine. Wide receiver
Brandon Duhon and Alex Courtier could provide some
depth at corner.
Offensively, Javonis Isaac moves back to tight end to
keep that spot top-notch, but only two starters return on
offense.

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths
The Tigers have a fast, athletic
linebacker duo in Kirkland Joseph
and Korey Louis to anchor their
five down lineman system. Both
have the range to cover sidelineto-sideline in what will be a faster
defense then in years past. The
loss of Joseph Williams will hurt,
but the rest of the Tigers secondary is experienced an athletic and
should be able to compete at a
high level.
The offense has a young, but
experienced offensive line paving
the way for a more wide-open offensive system. The Tigers are
transitioning from a traditional
two-back system, to a one-back
backfield in order to get more
speed on the field. It will be up to
senior quarterback Drake Guidry
to get the ball in the hands of his
playmakers.
Question Marks

of top-end speed could end up
being a weakness, as Breaux

Strengths
The Carencro Golden Bears offensive line was right in the middle of the
action as the program began to reach new heights in the early 1990s.
Question Marks
The athletic ability is certainly
there to turn many of these question mark into solutions, but there
are too many unproven areas to
not label them as questions at this
point. For instance, wide receivers
Trevor George and Eric Toliver
stand 6-2 and 6-3, respectively, and
look the part. Time will tell.
Perhaps the most important
question comes at quarterback,
where junior Carl Randall enters
camp as the starter. Another potential option is 2014 starting cornerback Gabe Duffy. Randall is more
of a pocket passer and Duffy a
runner.
An exciting question mark for
Carencros coaches is how will
Kendarious and Mondarious Poullard fit into the offense? They both
stand around 5-6 and perhaps 140
pounds with a bundle of energy
sort of a double dose of lightning
in a bottle.
Lagniappe
In addition to potentially being
an option at quarterback at some
point this season, Duffy remains the
teams punter, is expected to add
kicking duties to his list this year
and certainly has the athletic ability
to play other positions if needed.
While the Bears will be in Class
4A this season, Carencros schedule
isnt dramatically different. The
Bears wont be playing Barbe or
Lafayette High, but still play familiar foes Westgate, New Iberia,
Acadiana and Sam Houston. Furthermore, St. Thomas More and
Northside were on Carencros
non-district slate the last two seasons.

Theres no telling how many different positions Duffy might play this

defense if needed and he may even
see time at quarterback this fall.

Bottom Line
This is an experience, talented
team that on paper should compete for more than a district title
and perhaps more. But its a team
that will have to learn how to win
and become the hunted rather
than the hunter. How they perform in the early weeks could give
them confidence that will carry
through the district season and
maybe into the playoffs.

Strengths
The Spartans appear awfully strong in the trenches entering the 2015 season.
No group looks the part more than the defensive
front wall. That unit has size, speed and depth, not to
mention three returning starters, led by senior tackle
Kain Fogg. The offensive line is also promising. In addition to a pair of returning starters, the most talented one is junior newcomer Shane Vallot. The unit has
good size overall.
The Spartans new spread offense will be orchestrated by junior quarterback Brett Dotson, but its designed to take full advantage of the enormous physical skills of slot receiver Tanarious Achan, who played
quarterback last season.
Another key cog for the Spartans is junior Latrevian Thomas, who is the only returning starter in the
secondary.

The Church Point defense, led by defensive backs Trey Babineaux and
Frederick Williams, is primed for a successful season.
SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths:
The Bears five best players can
compete with just about anyone
in the state. Defensive back Frederick Williams is a stud, and will
make plays on both defense and
offense all season and the same
thing goes for Trey Babineaux.
Quarterback Troy Matte will
have to use his experience in the
Bears offense to avoid mistakes
and find his athletes on the outside so they can make plays with
their speed. The Bears will have a
fast unit, a hair faster than the
last couple of teams coach J.C. Arceneaux has had, and will try to
use that speed to outrun opposing defenses for big plays.
Question Marks:
The Bears arent young, but
they are inexperienced. With
only six total returning starters,
Bottom Line:
It would be a surprise if the
Bears didnt return to the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season
on the strength of Matte, Williams and Babineaux alone.
How far they go after that will
depend on how the new starters
make the transition to their new
roles.

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths:
The Gents will have an explosive offense this season powered
by experienced signal-caller Pate
Broussard and a host of talented
skill position players.
Broussard has the bruising
running back Ty'Von Griffin and
the speedy Keith Wilson to work
with in the backfield, to go along
with Terrell Thomas, Jacqco
Price, Maikel Hebert, Xavier
Johnson and John Marceaux in
the passing game. The Gents will
be explosive and should be able
to keep up with anyone in the
state.
The secondary is big and athletic and will be able to limit big
plays in the passing game. With
TyVon Griffin playing more snaps
on defense this season, the Gents
inside linebacker corps gets a
boost. Ed Yokum is an experienced rush linebacker on the outside for the Gents. If the lineman
can occupy enough blockers in
Crowleys 34 scheme itll open up
room for those experienced linebackers to make plays.
Crowley Gents explosive offensive weapons John Marceaux (40), JacqCo Price, TyVon Griffin (4), Mikal Hebert
(7), Pate Broussard (3), Xavier Johnson (9) and Terrell Thomas (2).
Question Marks:
On offense, the Gents are absolutely loaded at skill the skill
positions its the size up front that
leaves a little to be desired. Its an
extremely experienced group
that has the talent to succeed,
but against bigger teams just the
sheer lack of size could pose a
problem if the line doesnt have
exceptional technique with their
hands. And as with any team, a
couple of injuries at some key
spots could really hurt the Gents,
as they lack depth in certain
areas.
Bottom Line:
Crowley High Gents defensive standouts Jackson Hetzler (48), Quentron Gallow (21), Ed Yokum (8), TyVon Griffin
(4), John Ortiz (89), Desmond Harmon (43), Quanterral Robinson (38) and Jardell Delco (27).

Strengths
On offense, the Panthers have
senior Oliver Nunez back in his
role in the backfield, where he
will be expected to produce at
the same level he did last season.
The Panthers are inexperienced
on the offensive end, but coach
Marc Broussard said they had
near 100 percent attendance at
summer workouts and felt his
unit had gotten stronger and
faster. The Panthers real
strength will be their experienced defense, where they return six starters, including three
in the secondary. Theyll have to
keep opposing teams offenses in

through any bumps they experience early in the season with such
a young unit.

Bottom Line
Broussard coaches a tough

The defense will hang tough, but
against the real heavyweights

Heres a breakdown of the funniest comments by each coach, as well
as the most interesting fact about
their teams on the eve of the Kiwanis
Jamboree.
(Coaches are listed in order of
appearance)
1. Doug Dotson,
Comeaux
Funniest Joke:
I was hoping I wouldnt be first so
I could see how other people did, but
I guess I wont get the chance to do
that. Well, I wont be the funniest
coach up here I know that, Dotson
said. But thanks to (Acadiana coach
Ted) Davidson at least I wont be the
oldest and thanks to (Carencro coach
Rip) Eveland I wont be the ugliest.
Most Interesting Tidbit:
Dotson said his team lost three
starting offensive lineman during the
summer, one when his family moved
to Houston, one to an ACL injury and
one to another knee injury.
Also, former LSU receiver Josh
Reed now coaches the Spartans wide
receivers.
Carencro has All-SEC and AllAmerican Kevin Faulk and Northside
has All-SEC, All-American Trev Faulk,
Dotson said. Well, now we can
compete on that level.
2. Rip Eveland,
Carencro
Funniest Joke:
With Carencro moving down to
4A, Eveland joked about how he
keeps hearing from fans how it
might be easier for the Bears now
that they are out of 5A.
When you move down it means
you have less kids to use. You get an
injury and all of a sudden youve got
a bunch of 15-year-olds on your
offensive line.
Most Interesting Tidbit:
Eveland is very excited about his
defensive unit, which has a lot of
players coming back from last season
and thinks it could help the Bears
offense get in a groove early on in
the season.
We played a little intra-squad
scrimmage and the defense had us at
3rd and 27. I told them we ought to
just go ahead and punt now, Eveland said.

4. Ted Davidson,
Acadiana
Funniest Joke:
Our running back is quite the
mathematician, you know, Davidson said. He told me that he was
going to run for 1,000-to-1,500 yards
this season. Whichever came first.
Most Interesting Tidbit:
The Rams are widely expected to
be one of the best defenses in the
state this season with several returning players who could eventually play
Division I football, but Davidson was
most concerned with the offense
after their scrimmage.
We had botched snaps between
the center and the quarterback, we
had the quarterback bring his arm
back for a throw and drop it twice,
Davidson said. If you set it to music
it couldve been up there with NFL
Follies.
Bonus Joke:
Davidson fired back at Dotson,
who poked fun at the Rams coachs
age in the first speech, with a barb of
his own.
Doug, I may be the oldest, but at
least Ive still got more hair than
you, Davidson joked.
5. Logan Duplechain,
Cecilia
Funniest Joke:
Duplechain poked fun at his head
coach Terry Martin for calling in a
ringer to deliver the speech, and
waiting to the last second to tell him
he would be doing it.
We came in from the scrimmage
this season.
The Gators will have to pull
the double off, as they get
Rayne and Crowley in back-toback weeks, while the Gents
and the Wolves square off
perhaps for all the marbles
in the last week of the season.
With the Gators murderous
early out-of-district schedule
(Notre Dame, Sam Houston,
Westgate and Evangel Christian) I think they pull off the
away win against Rayne, but
falter due to fatigue at home to
Crowley and split the two.
That means the district
most likely comes down to
Rayne and Crowley in the final
week of the season, and Ill give
the Gents the win because of
Broussards senior leadership
and Griffin being more fresh
toward the end of the season
thanks to a big year from sophomore running back Keith Wilson.
LSU FOOTBALL
6. John Simmons,
Northside
Funniest Joke:
Simmons was another ringer
called upon by the head coach, and
he detailed how Northsides head
coach Trev Faulk eventually bullied
him into doing the speech.
I told him I wasnt going to do it
and Trevs a pretty intimidating guy,
Simmons said. Well, he was handing
out shirts to all the coaches and he
gave me a medium. I told him that
he gave me the wrong shirt size and
he asked if I was doing the Crying
Towel speech, I said no and he
told me that he hadnt given me the
wrong shirt.
I told him nobody wants this
belly popping out during a game so I
might as well do it.
7. Russell Phelps,
Jennings
Phelps kept it pretty cut-and-dry
throughout his speech without
throwing out any comedy bits.
He did compare his situation to
Northsides, as Jennings graduated 31
seniors from last years squad.
If you know anything about 3A,
you know how tough it is. I would
say we are growing and rebuilding
now, Phelps said.
9. Cedric Handy,
Lafayette
Handy kept his speech short and
sweet in the last spot and mostly
thanked Lafayette Highs administration and was thankful for the opportunity provided to him.
I just want to thank the coaches,
because without yall we wouldnt
have any football, so thank yall for
taking the time to do this, Handy
said.

Brees.
Did you see that 45-yard
strike to Brandin Cooks on
Saturday? Sure looked like
2009-2011 Brees to me.
So while we worry about the
Saints defense, who will be the
third receiver, and if the secondary will ever get healthy,
the news that Brees is completely healthy and looks great
is the best news we will get all
preseason.
If Brees is, say, 15-20 percent better in 2015, how we
view 2015 suddenly changes a
lot, doesnt it?
Head Coach:
David Comeaux.
Career Record: 46-42 overall; 4-6 at Erath.
STRENGTHS
The Erath Bobcats may just be the most interesting team to
attempt to handicap in the entire Acadiana area going into the
2015 season. On one hand, theres an awful lot of familiar faces.
Coach David Comeaux returned nine starters on the offensive
side and five on defense.
But whiles a lot of field experience, then theres the fact
that Erath is switching from the Four-wide Pistol offense to the
veer this season.
So returning three offensive linemen with perhaps one of
the newcomers Stephen Vallot being as promising as any of his
colleagues could be a big positive, but that unit has had to
learn a new way of blocking during the offseason.
While the line has some work to do, the starting quarterback returns three targets all standing at least 6-2 and two
seasoned halfbacks, not to mention a promising newcomer.
On defense, the numbers are as big, but theres two veterans back on the line, one at linebacker and two in the secondary to spread out the experience. There are changes on that
side as well with Keith Calvert coming over from Lafayette
High to be the new coordinator, although the Bobcats will remain in their 4-2-5 scheme.

Alex Richard (3), Darin Serie (21) and Terryl Poullard (13) form a strong trio for the Bobcats

up front where Highland is returning
its entire offensive line. Then theres

sophomore running back Brontre

yards as a freshman a year ago. Joining Griffin in the backfield will be
senior Jakob Deckard.
Being good in the trenches transfers over to the other side of the ball

250 pounds a spot, so the Bears
should be competitive upfront on
defense as well. Senior Brody Griffin
(6-4, 255) is a key factor on both sides

junior Claude Tremblay (6-3, 280) will

QUESTION MARKS
For Highland, the question marks
typically begin on defense. In the five

position.
The big question on defense is at
safety where a first-year junior starter
tries to take over for Gary Roberts.
Offensively, the passing game is
always a question for such a runoriented offense. Senior Luke Hayes
takes over at quarterback in only his
second year of football. Of course, in
this offense his duties will be executing the Wing-T more than throwing
the ball downfield.
LAGNIAPPE
Like many Class 1A programs, the
Bears are forced to start multiple
players on both sides of the ball.
Liuzza foresees it being as many as
five or six this season. Overall, however, the depth concern is about what
it normally is at Highland.

Question Marks
While the defense returns six
starters, the coaches are concerned about a lack of depth on
that side of the ball. Kaplan lost
one key starter at each level of the
defense that must be replaced. As
a result, Jaise Meche figures to
face more double-teams this

with two new starters around him
Lagniappe
In addition to losing several
key starters on defense, Kaplans
defensive coaching staff isnt back
intact. The Pirates not only lost a
head baseball coach when Sam
Taulli left to return to his alma
mater at Lafayette High, but also a
defensive line coach.

STRENGTHS
It starts off with a good amount of experience coming back
with six returning starters on offense and seven on defense. The
picture looks better on the defensive side, where theres balanced talent in each area.
On the line, theres two senior veterans with run-stopper Rodrigo Diaz and pass rusher Dylan Prejean. At linebacker, theres
last years combo of Khale Schexnayder and James Brown. And
three return in the secondary with junior Luther Brooks being
the newcomer.
The offense has seasoned halfback Trevin Kelly back, as well as
a nice start to a steady offensive line with Dominique Williams
moving from tight end to tackle to join left guard Ben Bertrand.

The biggest question is the health of three-year starting halfback Keshawn Young. Young suffered a shoulder injury in summer 7-on-7 drills and its possible he could miss much of the first
half of the regular season.
Thats significant on several fronts. For starters, Youngs hard
running will be missed, but also his potential replacements such
as LB Brown and SS Thaquan Priestley could affect the defense.
On the offensive side, Dwight Youngblood takes over as a fulltime starting quarterback for the first time.
His progress is crucial for the Lions. Not being a shifty runner,
Youngblood will need to establish a passing game that hasnt
been a big part of the Lions offense in recent years.
If not, then the full impact of having two returning wide receivers wont be as big and itll put more pressure on an offensive
line with three new starters and a backfield that could be missing
its top rushers for much of the season.
The passing game, though, could also get a lift from new junior tight end Hunter Merry, who figures to be more of a downfield threat than Williams was in recent seasons.
Lafayette Highs secondary of Luther Brooks (7), Troy Williams (9), Thaquan
Priestley (39) and Uche Utomi (16) is hoping to catch many a pass from
opposing quarterbacks this season.
While some may say the Lions arent real close to contending,
having not enjoyed a winning season since 2006, another perspective may indicate otherwise.
In going 4-6 last season, Lafayette High lost to district champion Carencro by four points, runner-up Barbe by seven points and
to eventual state champion Acadiana High by three points.
Now with that team returning 13 starters, coach Jay Domengeauxs Lions are hoping to be able to take that next step.
To do so, the passing game will need to be elevated and either
Young must return soon, or his replacements will need to be productive.
The early-season schedule is conducive to a quick start, but
LHS must figure out a way to win those close games in District
3-5A play.

Question Marks
The Knights are very young along the
offensive line and have three new starters in the unit. Getting five offensive
linemen all in sync is a tough job, and
how well that group plays together early
in the season will go a long way in determining the Knights overall success.
The defensive secondary is young as
well, with only Kately returning from
last years unit.
Teams with strong passing attacks,
such as in-district opponents Vermilion

take advantage of the inexperience
there to put up some points on the
Knights and force them to play from behind.

New Iberias returning offensive line of Travis Landry (55), Isaiah Romero (59), Kalin Nero
(52), Devin Gabriel (65) and Logan Manzo (72) is hoping to elevate the Jackets offense this
season.
The Jackets could be very explosive again on offense. For starters, New Iberia returns its entire offensive line from a year ago, as well as two wide receivers.
The two new starters at wide out in the programs
spread offense features the most talented one in the
arsenal.
Those two elements fit perfectly with the return of
quarterback Timothy Declouet. Truthfully, the Jackets
coaches had no idea what they had in Declouet prior
to last season and he delivered in a big way by throwing for over 2,000 yards, including three games over
300 yards.
And while Aaron Bean is technically a new starter
at running back, he got some playing time last season.
Plus, hes got the perfect dual threat skills for this backfield.
Theres a lot less seasoning on the defensive side,
where linebackers Brody Bourque and Troy Thibodeaux lead in the middle. Bourque is a three-year
starter. The defensive line is deeper than usual and will
be paced by sophomore Brant Leslie.
Even in the kicking game, a three-year starter returns at placekicker Cy Kipp.

Dylan Dent and Caleb Castro are
two-way starters in the backfield and at

Strengths
The Vikings return seven starters on defense, including four
on the offensive line and three wide receivers. Its sort of a
strange combination. A year ago, Northside had a playmaking
quarterback in Ethan Rose with one college prospect at offensive tackle and four new starters with him on the line.
In addition to the three starters back at receiver, a four option in newcomer Mark Bonnet is also expected to be a quality
option.
On the defensive end, only three starters are back, but three
that the coaching staff are very exciting about. On the line,
theres the duo of Tyler Shelvin and Jason Celestain. Shelvin is
one of the top Division I prospects in the area and hes only a
junior. Shelvin goes 6-3 and 320 pounds, while Celestain is no
small lineman himself at 6-2, 230.
Also back on defense is the linebacker leader Devontai Wilson, who the coaches are hoping will be a tackling machine for
the Vikings this fall.

In this newly formed District 8-3A, the conventional thinking is it will be a three-horse race
between traditional powers the Patterson Lumberjacks and the E.D. White Cardinals of Thibodaux, as
well as the surging Kaplan Pirates.
The Pirates are a pretty obvious selection. Not
only have the Pirates won at least one playoff
game in each of the past two seasons, but coach
Stephen Lotiefs team has 14 total starters back,
including the key ones for a Wing-T offense.
For instance, the Pirates offense returns three
offensive linemen and its entire backfield. With a
seasoned quarterback and two leading rushers
back, the Pirates offense shouldnt require the
early-season kickstart that it did last fall.
On defense, six return, including a standout
defensive lineman.
In these parts, however, a lot less is known
about the Lumberjacks or Cardinals.
Patterson has been a dangerous team for decades now and nothing has really changed. The
Lumberjacks reached the quarterfinals each of the
past two seasons, falling to Jennings 27-14 in 2013
and to North Webster in a 51-47 heartbreaker last
fall.
The Lumberjacks return a 2,300-yard passer, a
1,300-yard rusher and an elite outside linebacker.
The potential issues with Patterson, though, is
having to replace four starters on the offense line,
as well as several key spots in the secondary.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, return eight on
offense, five on defense and everyone in the
kicking game. E.D. White was 8-4 in coach Chris
Bergerons first season as head coach with the
Cardinals, falling to Notre Dame 41-7 in the quar-

White, though, does return its starter and key

The biggest source of concern for the Cardinals
is trying to replace the loss of six of the front seven

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths
The Vikings certainly bring a
positive attitude into Dane Charpentiers second season after going 10-2 last fall. It also helps that
OC returns six starters on offense
and five on defense.
Offensively, the Vikings return
three starters in the backfield, including second-year QB David
Labbe. Three starters are back on
the line and one of the new starters is a returning varsity player on
defense in DE Gaige St. Cyr. Another one of the new starters
on offense is tight end Caleb Theriot, who had an unbelievable
summer at tight end, and could
be a major threat in the passing
game this season.
Question Marks
Like in so many Class 2A and
1A programs, returning starters can be a little deceiving. For
instance, of the 11 returning
starters, seven play on the other
side of the ball as well, which
mean depth is crucial at certain
positions.
Injuries in the trenches, especially on the offensive line, could
be a challenge.
The big question on defense is
two new starters at strong safety,
which are key positions in a 4-2-5
defensive alignment.
The schedule could be another issue for the Vikings. It
wouldnt require much of an
imagination to picture a scenario
where the Vikings would be improved this season and not have
as good an overall record.
Lagniappe
While depth indeed is an issue, the Vikings do sport two or
three promising freshmen who
could provide unusual depth, especially on the defensive line.
Among that group is defensive
tackle/tight end James Monroe.

The Wolves return two key elements offensively in quarterback Jaylon Reed and top inside running back Trey Wilridge. Both started as sophomores a year ago and should
make huge strides this season. Reed threw for 18 touchdowns and Wilridge rushed for over 1,200 yards and nine
scores last fall.
On the defensive side, Rayne will be counting heavily on
returning linemen Richard Breaux and Austin Coleman and
linebacker Nicky Faucheaux. While there may be more athletic ability, there wont be nearly as much experience
around him.

STRENGTHS
St. Martinville will be getting
back to the basics this season
under new coach Vincent DeRouen, who did a wonderful job of
rebuilding a Northside program
during his time as head coach
there. DeRouens system focuses
on simple tasks performed perfectly, which should fit the Tigers
overall athletic team. The running
game will be relied upon and
while the Tigers dont have much
depth, if they can stay healthy
throughout the season it should be
a strength on offense.
In DeRouens 4-2-5 system, speed

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths
While some schools struggle
to find one competent quarterback, the Cougars have two excellent signal callers. Both Will
Bellamy and Matt Gardner will
see significant playing time this
season, and both have their
unique strengths. Bellamy runs
the offense well and will keep the
Cougars
humming
along
smoothly, but Gardner has a live
arm and can drive the ball down
field; even showing nice touch on
his deep balls at times. Trevor
Begue will touch the ball 15-25
mier unit.
Bottom Line
The Cougars should be in rebuilding year after losing so
much talent from last years
team, but through internal improvement and key players returning at important spots they
will end up competing for yet another district title under coach
Jim Hightower. Look for the defense to establish an identity in
the first four weeks of the season,
and build upon that as the district
schedule approaches.
St. Thomas More quarterback Jamie Howard (15) and his stable of receivers helped to bring the Cougars program to its first state semifinal trip in 1991.

couple of teams get the luxury of
having a future SEC signal-caller

with the Rebels high-octane,

Teurlings quarterback Cole Kelley passes the ball during a game against Northside in the 7-on-7
Showcase this summer.
Carencro pulled the lucky card and got both
Teurlings and St. Thomas More at home this season,
which should be a big plus for the Bears.
The Rebels play St. Thomas More at home, but as
we learned last season home field advantage
doesnt really mean much when those two heated
rivals meet.

3. Catholic-NI Panthers
Ive heard the talk that the Panthers wont be
as explosive as last season. While that may be
true, theres no requirement that a team has to
win 50-10 to get credit. Its Brent Indest, folks. If
indeed offensive production is Catholics biggest weakness, thats a bad sign for the opposition.
7. Crowley Gents
This might be the first offense-heavy team in
this poll. Simply put, the Gents will be fun to
watch this season. There are no cupcakes in this
new district, though, so maintaining this spot
will require an upgrade defensively.
2. Teurlings Catholic
Cole Kelley is a stud and no
lead is safe with him at the helm
of the Rebels offense. Quarterback is king in football and Ill
take the best one in the state.

Despite the loss of star defensive end Jalen Bates, the Pirates should be strong once

Westminster is ready for the season behind the talent of Ken Jones (31), Noah Launey (2), Kaleb Prudhomme (9), Louis Champagne (72), Antoine White
(55) and Brandon Vidrine (48).
SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths:
The Crusaders will be better
on offense this season entering
year two in the system installed
by coach Vinnie Bullara and his
coaching staff.
Ken Jones is tough as nails at
running back and will use his size
and speed to pound defenses for
yards and open up room for
sophomore Kaleb Prudhomme in
the passing game.
The offensive line has some
experience and size, especially on
the right side, and should help
open some running lanes for
blockers.
OConnor picked off two
passes last year and will be the
last line of defense at free safety
again for the Crusaders.
Question Marks:
Obviously, depth is a concern
for the Crusaders. With only 32
players on the roster any injuries
to main players would be devastating to Bullaras squad.
The defensive secondary is
young with two new starters at
cornerback and teams with solid
passing attacks might be able to
expose the Crusaders on the out-
side.
The offense is led by a sophomore in Prudhomme and while
Bullara is confident in his quarterback the youth at such a crucial
position would make any coach
at least a little nervous.
Bottom Line:
The new district is weak after
it was reconfigured by the LHSAA
and with a good summer in the
weight room and four more
coaches on staff to give individual instruction the Crusaders will
show improvement from last seasons one-win total.

Westgate High offensive standouts guard Taylor Fondal (75), tackle Malik Mitchell (50), running back Trevon Doucet (5), wide receiver Phillip Tate and

SCOUTING REPORT
Strengths
The mindset of the 2015 Westgate Tigers football team is sort
of a strange dynamic. After all
the trials and turmoil of a year
ago with a host of injuries and
dismissals, the resolve it took to
play so many freshmen and sophomores last fall may end up producing an even more prepared
and determined group this season.
Normally, starting two sophomores on offense and perhaps as
many as six on defense would be
a huge question mark, and it still
is perhaps, but most of those second-year players started at least
half of the games last season.
On paper, however, the biggest strength for Westgate is its
