INTRODUCTION
The contact patch is formed due to interaction
between tire and road where inside it normal
stresses and longitudinal and lateral tangential
stresses are developed. The functional,
constructive and dimensional parameters of
the tire as well as the nature and the type of the
surface of the road or the level of damage of the
above mentioned parameters it influences the
forces that are transmitted through the contact
patch.
The shape and the size of the contact
surface between tire and road depend on many
factors, among them are tires characteristics,
roads type and the forces applied to the tire.
The influences of different factors against the
contact surface are the following:
-Tires vertical deformation changes
approximately linearly the gross area of the
contact surface;
-The running speed changes the shape of the
contact patch making the gross area bigger;
-The tread design produces a decrease in the
effective surface of the contact area between
tire and road.
An increase of the static load of the tire
leads to a growth of pressures in the contact
patch as well as it increase the surface of the
contact patch.
