WHAT IS BANKING?
According to Section 5(b) of the Banking Regulations
act, the term Banking means the accepting for the
purpose of lending or investment of deposits of
money from public, repayable, on demand or
otherwise , and withdraw able by cheque,draft
,order or otherwise.

So, from this we can infer that major functions of a


Bank are:

To mobilize deposit from public, and

ii.

Invest or lend these deposits.

TYPES OF DEPOSITS
Deposits are normally classified into Demand Deposit

And Time Deposit


From which Demand deposits are those which can withdrawn or
transferred by the customer at anytime without previous notice to
the bank.
Actully, these deposits are maintained to meet liquidity and
transaction needs.
Demand deposits are again three types:
A. Current Deposits,
B. Saving Deposits,
C. Time Deposits.
Now, lets go to the types of Bank Deposits.
Bank deposits serve different purposes for different
people. Some people cannot save regularly; they deposit
money in the bank only when they have extra income.
THE PURPOSE OF DEPOSIT THEN IS TO KEEP MONEY FOR
FUTURE NEEDS.

If sufficient balance is assured with wriiten in
cheque.

A/C no & name are coincident or not.

Total of amt is valid or not (i.e. both in words as well
as in figure).

Amt (IN OTHER WORDS A SUFFICIENT BALANCE)

FOR FIXED DEPOSIT
By cheque
A valid cheque with amt balanced to particular.
By Cash
Cash must be concurrent at the time of deposited.
Transfer
It can be transfer at the date of maturity.
N.B. However the Indian Bank Association Code for Banking
Practices has stipulated that the maximum period for which a
deposit may be accepted by a Bank as 120 months.
