COVER ARTIST

Night and Day

This months cover is compliments of Mother Nature!

ABOUT THE ARTIST

What could possibly be more beautiful than the natural

scenes that Mother Nature bestows upon us every night
and day? From the lovely skies, to the fields, wondrous
species of animals, colors of the changing seasons,
flowers and trees, mountains, valleys and bodies of
water of every sortwe are certainly blessed.
And the most extraordinary thing is that its all FREE!
We have only to appreciate it and respect it.
Lets remember, as
we enjoy the bounty
of the season, to take
a moment to thank
God and Mother
Nature for these gifts.

Today, along with other foods, meat is inspected to

ensure it is safe, of good quality, weighed on
approved scales by a licensed seller, stored and sold
in inspected facilities, wrapped in a special clear
covering, and dated with price and weight shown.

HONEY TIP
Cough relief due to a cold: Dissolve 1 tsp. honey and 1
Tbs. lemon juice in a small glass of warm water, and
sip. For a stronger solution, combine equal parts of
honey and lemon, and take 1 tsp. at bedtime. Either
mixture will help loosen phlegm.

In the 30s, we had a local man from Candor named

Jim Luciani, who came around weekly in an open
truck with a side of beef, a pig or two, along with
some chickens all hanging in the open. They were
neither refrigerated nor inspected. He would slowly
drive down the road, and housewives watching for
him would signal him to stop and tell him what they
wanted. He would cut off close to the amount
requested, weigh it on an old set of scales and sell it
to her. Everyone trusted him and he apparently
never let them down. I dont recall anyone getting
sick from it. Our present government regulators
would have a ball with that style of distribution.
Ill never forget Jimmy, which is what everyone called
him. He was an avid football fan and would go to our
high school games wearing a heavy raccoon fur coat,
going up and down the sidelines yelling WE
GOTTUMABEAT. We could be down by 50 points,
but he kept on cheering. Everyone loved that old guy
and whole crowds joined in the festivities, proving
that winning isnt everything.

By Dick Anderson

These were the years before freezers, and

refrigerators were scarce. Many special items were
seasonal as there was no way to store them for long
periods of time. One example was oysters, which
were only available once a year. They would be
delivered to the local store in a wooden barrel and
dished out to customers as needed. They had to be
sold rather quickly to keep from spoiling. Today we
enjoy such delicacies all year long.

Before I leave the 1930s and move

into the 1940s, it seems appropriate
to discuss in more detail our way of
life during that decade. Reading todays newspapers,
listening to medical reports and warnings, makes me
wonder. How did I live this long? In my youth, we
drank raw milk, ate eggs every morning, enjoyed fried
bacon as often as possible, drank water from springs
and even the creeks. To us, water was water, no
matter where it came from. There was an old saying
back thenyou must eat a peck of dirt before you
die. Im afraid some of us came close.

Many other food items also came in barrels. There

was the cracker barrel, the pickle barrel, the cereal
barrel, and other bulk items in these containers. The
clerk would dip into the barrel to get the quantity
you wanted and put it into some kind of container,
often one you brought. Cheese was kept on the
counter, and as it aged would be covered with green
mold, showing it was extra sharp and a delicacy to
many people. The cheese was so strong, the knife
used for cutting would have to be replaced every
year or so, as it would actually turn black.
Strange but true.

In 1997 Kay Perkins began a 2-year

stint in Kiribati as a member of the Peace Corps.
While there, she kept a diary of her experiences. She
graciously shared this diary with us, so that we can share it
with our readers.
NOTE: Since we began running the Kiribati Diary, we learned
that Kay has passed away. We are continuing her diary in her
honor. Rest in peace, Kay. Thank you for sharing.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

2 /1 3 /9 8

Im watching the government compound cleaned up for the

president. It even looks like the bed of the truck is going to get
a coat of paint. Of course the president will have to ride in it
so it makes sense. I had three fires four, I guess, around my
house this AM. Mirotaake came and cleaned up. I gave her
granola to eat, but she didnt like it. She couldnt manage to
get it down. Thats how I feel about boiled fish and chicken
and breadfruit. I just cant get it down! Raeta has a youth
group cleaning around the hotel. I wish they had a
lawnmower! I wonder if there could be a hay bailer sent here.
The youth could pull it by hand or with their bikes. I keep
getting prickers on my skirt whenever I walk through the field.
I got my maps out today and put them up in my front room
and one in my kitchen. Mentally I feel much better today. Both
Raeta and Tabwakis wife were in. Last night I ran into
Mamoa and she asked me if I was going to the Maneaba.
Apparently she thought I had been invited. I was up to
Gretchens from about 4:00-6:30, so maybe I missed an
invitation.
2 /1 4 /9 8
Saturday I had a nice quiet day. Went early to the store
(7am) for bleach and they had bananas! I forgot to take a bag
with me but he found one for me. Cleaned my house.
Mirotaake did my wash and got my water. What a joy to have
some help! Tabwaki came over with the baby for some tea.
The babys name is Kee Kee. He is so cute. Now he laughs
out loud. They are finishing cleaning up for the president. A
bunch of boys were out in the field pulling up grass and
singing all the time. What a great culture! They have the red
painted truck out, fiddling with every inch of it. I hope it doesnt
have a flat! It looks so nice. The wind is blowing smoke from
the fires all over my clean house. Thats life! Ive been in
mostly all day. I baked a peach shortcake. I want to take it
over to Tabwakis; maybe if I wait long enough I can give it to
Mirataake when she comes. Ill see.

NOTE TO READERS

We ran the story of Sa-Sa-Na Loft, Owegos Indian Maiden,

in 39 parts, from March 2005 through May 2008. Due to
requests to repeat the story, and for the benefit of new
readers who missed it the first time, we are re-running the
story. It was lovingly compiled by Marilyn Searles, who
passed away as we were going to print with the first chapter.
We hope she enjoyed reading it in heaven, and will enjoy this
encore!

Owegos Indian Maiden

Sa-Sa-Na Loft (Part 10)
Compiled and submitted by, and in loving memory of
Marilyn T. Searles
Owego Embraces Sa-Sa-Na (continued):
The Loft family were the leaders of the reservation
drive to raise $9,000 to build a handsome church. No
personal sacrifice was too great for the Lofts, no
exertion too discouraging. The finished church stood on
the northern banks of the river. The family continued
to seek ways to benefit their people and were
instrumental in raising the cash to print 4,000 copies of
a simple elementary school book in the Mohawk
language. The music tour was aimed towards printing a
greater number of books for wider distribution. Three
of them set out on a fund-raising tour with their
Mohawk songs and sacred music. After their stay in
Owego, the Lofts went on to Deposit, where they gave
another concert. The next day, they prepared to board
the mail train at the Deposit station.
High above Deposit, the engineer of a freight train lost
control of the engine on the steep down grade. The
engineer jumped from the cab and the train careened
down the track. When they heard yells of alarm from a
September 201 5

FDIC

man who saw the runaway train, the two sisters leaped
out of the car and reached the platform. Ya-go-weia
escaped, but Sa-sa-na fell back against the car,
crumbling under the smashing impact of the uncurbed
freight, and was killed instantly. Two others died of
injuries from the impact and live steam.
News of the tragedy quickly reached Owego and Avery
rushed to the familys aid. He had Sa-sa-na removed to
his Owego home and made arrangements for the
funeral, which was held at his church. Her body was
interred in the Avery family vault until the spring thaw.
Two days before the funeral, the coroners jury at
Deposit issued a verdict censuring the New York & Erie
RR for the accident. The jury found that the RR had
often allowed freight trains to follow passenger trains
too closely on down grades.
The tragedy so stirred the people of Owego that there
were more people at the ceremonies than had ever
been seen gathered together in the town. To quote her
broken-hearted brothers words: One half the burden
of the load is lifted from our hearts because of the
kindness of the people of Owego.
Avery sued on behalf of the family to obtain damages.
Before the case went to trial, the RR paid the family
$2,000all of which was spent in the publication of
books in the Mohawk language for the education of
the Mohawk people.

CO2 & PAINTBALL REFILLS AVAILABLE

Thousands of mothers receive

this precious gift given to them
by their little darlins. Bouquets
of hand-picked flowers from the
yard usually consisting of
dandelions, violets, tulips, and
any other colorful blooming
vegetation are also popular. One
cannot put a dollar value on
these gifts because to the little
ones, these are special, personal,
and come from their innocent
little hearts.
Year after year these little tokens
of love become more
sophisticated, until now at
perhaps 8 or 10 years old, the
gifts reach the next plateau. The
kids, with the help of Dad (well,
whos going to drive them to the
mall?), now get to pick out the
gifts for Mom from a list made by
Dad, under instructions from
(you guessed it) MOM, and pay
for them with their allowance
savings (Ha!). Of course Dads on
hand to pick up any shortage.

she opens the crudely wrapped
packages under the proud,

Can the children help but feel

EVER WONDER
Why Rx is the symbol for a prescription?
The R is the sign of the Roman god Jupiter (the patron
of medicines). Rx was an abbreviation of recipe (from
the Latin recipere to receive).
The reason that R was atop prescriptions was that
recipe meant take in Latin, so that take preceded all
directions to the patient. Even the English word recipe
originally referred to medical prescriptions, although the
connection between formulas for medical purposes and
formulas for cooking were then less farfetched, since
both used many of the same herbs and spices.

BEING LAZY ON WEEKENDS

Research from Northwestern University has linked

staying up lateand then sleeping in the next
morningto weight gain. Study subjects who went to
bed after midnight woke up mid-morning and ate their
first meal of the day around noon consumed more
calories a day, ate more fast food and consumed fewer
fruits and vegetables than those who routinely went to
bed before midnight and woke up around 8am each
morning. If your weekly routine has you going to bed
relatively early each night and waking up early for work
every morning, keep up with that routine on weekends.

Writing From My Rocker

By Hazel Goodrich

It has been a summer of observation

for me. I thought I knew what hot
weather was, but trust meI am
learning a whole new aspect of that
term. I actually took a picture of the weekly graph on
the TV weather station and sent it to one of my New
York friends. It has been 90+ every day for three
weeks! There were a couple of days that crept into the
100 area, and no cooler air is expected in the near
future.

It sounds worse than it is. We have central air and can

be as comfortable as we can afford to be. The car has
A/C, gas is cheaper here, we can just scoot from the
house to the car, run into church, the store or doctors,
and right back home without getting sweaty. We are
staying in out of the heat more than we stayed in out
of the cold up there!
Gardening is done before 9am or after 7pm, and no
one cuts grass in the middle of the day. Outdoor
events are tolerated by everyone bringing ice, water,
umbrellas, big hats and large bottles of sunscreen.
When it gets into the three digits, things are cancelled
or postponed.
On the plus side, you will be watching your garden
wind down but ours will be full strength until midOctober. The sun shines every day, clouds are seldom
parked overhead for more than a few hours. When we
have thunderstorms, they are very loud and the
lightning is brilliant. Gentle rain is not a normal thing;
it comes down hardin sheets! It soaks in quickly,
though, settling the dust and leaving a clean, fresh
smell.
Our school buses have been back on the road since
August 10th, and yours will start soon. Please be
careful around them. These children are our future
and the men and women who drive those buses
deserve our thanks and respect. Remember Labor Day
for what it stands for. God bless and keep yall safe!

As we turn the pages of time, we discover hidden

mysteries and triumphs in each new chapter.

Heart To Heart

Isaiah 40 is a great chapter in the Word of God. It begins with words of

comfort about the coming of Messiah and His forerunner, John The Baptist
the voice of someone shouting, Clear the way for the LORD! (NLT)
When we get to verse 12 and following, we find amazing thoughts about
how incomparable the one and only true God is! One header declares this:
The Lord Has No Equal!
Hear the Word of our God: 12 Who else has held the oceans in his hand?
Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who else knows the
weight of the earth or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale?
13 Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord? Who knows enough to give
him advice or teach him? 14 Has the Lord ever needed anyones advice?
Does he need instruction about what is good? Did someone teach him what
is right or show him the path of justice? 15 No, for all the nations of the world
are but a drop in the bucket. They are nothing more than dust on the scales.
He picks up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand. 16 All the
wood in Lebanons forests and all Lebanons animals would not be enough
to make a burnt offering worthy of our God. 17 The nations of the world are
worth nothing to him. In his eyes they count for less than nothingmere
emptiness and froth. 18 To whom can you compare God? What image can
you find to resemble him? 19 Can he be compared to an idol formed in a
mold, overlaid with gold, and decorated with silver chains? . . . 22 God sits
above the circle of the earth. The people below seem like grasshoppers to
him! He spreads out the heavens like a curtain and makes his tent from
them. . . .25 To whom will you compare me? Who is my equal? asks the
Holy One. 26 Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings
them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because
of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. . .
28 Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the
everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding...31...those who trust in
the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. (NLT)
What an amazing God!!! NOTHING compares to Himeverything,
everyone is in contrast to Him! YOU need to be in a personal relationship
with Him and such is only available in and through Jesus Christ! I invite
YOU to Come, See A Man! This is the theme of the 2nd Annual Greater
Owego Tent Revival, September 10-13, at Marvin Park. This Man is the
God-Man, Emmanuel (Jehovah God With Us!), Savior Jesus, the Messiah,
the Christ. Hes without comparison and He Loves YOU with an everlasting
love and He proved such by dying on the cross for you.
Come see Come meet this Man and youll never again be the same.
God Bless!

Mindclips

By Ann Lowdermilk
I am relieved to note that the first
day of fall 2015 in the Northern
Hemisphere is September 23rd,
giving those of us who treasure the gifts of summer
ample time to hold on, absorbing the delicious flavors
which seem to surround us at every turn, celebrating
the drama presented to the senses.
It has been such a beautiful summer here, with its
sunshine and rain, its hot days interspersed with the
fairest blue skies and low humidity, generously
providing for the meeting of crucial timing for the
farmer and the vast force of those whose work is
accomplished outdoors. At mid-August, lawns are yet
a tender green, the corn in the bins waiting to be
bought offer hardly a visiting bug and a sweet reward
upon cooking; tomatoes burst with a flavor that
money cannot buy in December, and oh, the peaches
and watermelon and heavy home grown cabbages!
How exuberant the flower shows! Our back porch
looks much like vivid splashes of colors on an artists
palette, welcoming the beholding eye to potted
beauties of geraniums, sun-loving impatiens, those
little tight-fisted ageratum, a bowl of peeking alyssum
White Knights, so thick that a visiting bee couldnt
possibly fall through to the soil, angelonia, arching
ever up on slender stalks with staggeringly gorgeous
yawning blossoms, a hanging basket of scaevola with
its catchers mitt five fingered flower
It is simply unthinkable to rush off and not tarry, not
indulge, not be astounded at a time such as this, when
each mornings dawn again invites us to partake in
natures wares in an exquisite open market.
The pumpkins are ripening in outstretched fields,
potted chrysanthemums are showing up in farms and
retail stores, but Im holding on to this day, this day of
summer. Fall, unique with her own yet undisclosed
beauty, stands waiting in the wings; may she be
patient for the passing of the baton.
Note: A heart felt Thank You to those masterful
gardeners in our communities who till the soil with
nutrients, love and knowledge, arranging their gardens
with such flair and class that those of us who pass by
take wonder. You incite joy far beyond your borders!

After escaping from slavery, Harriet Tubman returned
to the South 19 times to rescue others from bondage.
As the chief conductor on the Underground Railroad,
she depended on God and a network of friendly
supporters to provide food and hiding places.
One time, she knocked at the door of a safe house,
only to find that the owner had been run out of town
for harboring runaways. Tubman knew that their
presence in town was revealed and said a speedy
prayer. Then she remembered a nearby swamp and
took the refugees there. They spent a miserable day
hiding in the cold, wet grass. After dusk, they saw a
man walking along the edge of the swamp, talking in a
stage whisper about a horse and wagon that stood
waiting at a nearby farm. The fugitives found the
wagon, loaded with provisions.
In all, Tubman freed more than 300 people from
slavery and always counted her faith as the most
important item she carried along her way.
I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a
passenger.

Again some princes tried to find some

fault with the man of God because the
king favored him so. They knew that three times every
day Daniel opened his window and looked toward
Jerusalem while he prayed so in order to trap him,
they asked Darius to make a law that everyone should
bow down only to the king for thirty days or be
thrown into a den of lions. Darius was foolish and
proud, and he agreed to sign the law.

Now Darius was sorry that he had signed such a

foolish order, and he tried to find some way to save
Daniel, but he finally had to send Daniel to the den of
lions. In his heart, he hoped that the God Daniel
served would save him.

TEACHERS PRAYER
By David Bennett

O Lord,
Grant me your strength, so I will have courage in every
situation;
Grant me your love, so I will never give up on anybody;
Grant me your wisdom, so I will show others the path
to success;
Grant me your mercy, so I will forgive those who have
hurt me;
Grant me your peace, so I will find the best in
everybody.
Grant me your hope, so I will never give up;
Grant me your joy, so I will be thankful for all my
blessings;
And grant me your grace,
So you will always be at my side.

Daniel in the Lions Den (Part 2 of 2)

Daniel knew about the law, but still he continued to

pray every day to the true God. The princes stood by
his window and watched him open it to pray as usual;
then they reported it to the king.

bible story for children

In those days hungry lions were kept in a sealed pit to

be used as a special torture. As the soldiers led Daniel
toward the pit, the lions roars could be heard, first
clearly, then loudly when the stone covering the den
was opened. The guards threw Daniel in quickly and
sealed the opening with the stone again.
All night the king worried about Daniel. He could not
even sleep or eat his food. When morning came, he
hurried to the lions den and took away the stone.
Daniel, was your God able to save you? he called
hopefully. From deep inside the darkness of the pit,
Daniel answered, My Lord sent an angel who has
closed the mouth of the lions, O King, so that you
could see that I meant no wrong.
How happy King Darius was! He had Daniel removed
from the den, and the jealous princes were thrown in
instead. This time, the lions were not guarded by any
angel and the men were killed.
Daniel continued to serve in the palace all the days of
his life and he continued to make his wonderful
prophecies about the kingdom of God which was to
come.

Legendarium -A Screenplay
By Mackenzie E. Anders

Episode 6 Part 2:

Into the Evil Legendarium

(Kylie stands, gets up from the cold ground, and looks
around at her surroundings.)
Kylie - Whoa, this place is so dark!
(As she looks around she notices that everything in the evil
Legendarium is just like a giant forest except more spooky
and dark. She pulls out a magical map that the guardian
gave her earlier.)
Kylie - Okay, Im in the Shova forest. Man, I have a lot of land
to cover.
(Kylie starts to walk and in the real world the boys are at the
pool getting ready for swim practice when their coach walks
up to them.)
Coach - Have any of you seen Kylie?
Eli - Actually, I havent seen her all day.
(The coach walks away.)
Evan - Where is Kylie?
Max - Maybe the guardian knows.
(Ethan is agitated.)
Ethan - Kylie has the Legendarium and we dont know where
she is.
Max - Kylie keeps it in her room; maybe it is there.
Evan If you are right, maybe it is still there.
Eli - Then we will need to check her room after practice.
(It then shows Kylie walking through a forest full of thousands
of trees. In the midst, the wind causes the trees to shake. As
Kylie walks further into the woods, it gets darker and darker.
As she is walking, she hears a noise. She turns around and
there are three strange looking men standing behind her.)
Kylie Hi!
First Man - Get her!
Kylie - I didn't want to do this, but!
(She flips out her communicator and presses the middle
button but nothing happens.)
Kylie - Come on!
(She looks up and the strange men are walking over to her
and she turns around and starts to run.)
First Man - Just dont stand there! Go after her!
(They start to chase her! She is able to run for about two
blocks through the woods when she trips over one of the
trees roots. When she looks back, the three men are just
behind her. She tries to slip away when a boy drops from the
trees and fights off the three men. He then turns around and
faces Kylie.)
Kylie - Who are you?
(The boy helps her up.)
Eric - I'm Eric!
September 201 5

Kylie - You're the guardians brother!

Eric - How do you know my sister?
Kylie - She sent me to find you. I am one of the Protectors.
Eric - How do I know youre telling the truth?
Kylie - Why else would I be in this place?
Eric - I believe you!
(He starts to walk away, but turns around.)
Eric - Are you coming?
Kylie - Where?
Eric - My hideout.
(They start to walk away.)

BIG FOOT WAS HERE

By Anne O. Stout

I have some mixed feelings about progress. We need

to advance, move forward, but as a naturist I see the
ever-lasting changes, our foot print as they say,
everywhere. I have always loved the countryside with
woods, streams, trails, wildlife and so much more.
Geocaching has even gotten me exploring more parks
and preserves, but even there we are making changes,
leaving scars.

Sweet Corn

The natural gas drilling near and around my hometown

in Pennsylvania has cleared lumber, cut up rocks,
widened roads, and more. Even though NY hasnt
allowed fracking as yet, pipelines are being planned
which will bring in more clearing here. Even in our
parks and preserves we have to add our own manmade items such as benches, pavilions, trash cans,
doggy pile receptacles, signs, etc.
Nature is so beautiful and wondrouswhy do we feel
we must improve on it? And are we? As campers, my
family has stayed in a wide variety of campgrounds,
hiked a lot of trails; but even those are changing,
improvingso some think; but I wonder! The recent
scenes in the news of contaminated water from a mine leaking
into a nearby river in the westscary! We hear the water is
now clearing; doesnt that mean the impurities are sinking to
the bottom? They are still there, to seep into the soil. I can see
good in my hometown from the natural gas drilling, like the
new hospital, which was needed, but how big is the price tag?
What happens to the old hospital, left to rot in the downtown
area? What are we leaving for future generations?
The definition of the ecological footprint is the measure of
the load imposed by a given population on nature. We are part
of nature and nature supplies us with material requirements.
When the natural gas is gone on the farmlands outside my
hometown, will the gas companies clean up before they leave?
For instance, there are mounds in the middle of field and
pastures where the drilling was done; will they put the land
back? Will the farms be farms again? What happens when all
our resources run out? As a mother, I wonder what my children
and grandchildren will have left; will there still be nature for
them to enjoy?
We need to make sure our footprint doesnt crush nature
we need it!

Because the walls of the veins are thin, the wasterich blood visible through your hands, wrists and

Valves located inside the veins keeps waste-rich

blood moving in the proper direction, without
allowing it to flow backward. True or False?
Answer: True. The vein valves are necessary to keep
blood flowing toward the heart, but they are also
necessary to allow blood to flow against the force of
gravity. For example, blood that is returning to the
heart from the foot has to be able to flow up the leg.
Generally, the force of gravity would discourage that
from happening. The vein valves, however, provide
footholds for the blood as it climbs its way up.

NATURAL PHENOMENON

Gravi ty
Waves

The undulating pattern of a Gravity Wave is caused by

air displaced in the vertical plain, usually as a result of
updrafts coming off the mountains or during
thunderstorms. A wave pattern will only be generated
when the updraft air is forced into a stable air pocket.
The upward momentum of the draft triggers into the
air pocket causes changes in the atmosphere, altering
the fluid dynamics. Nature then tries to restore the
fluid changes within the atmosphere, which present in
a visible oscillating pattern within the cloud.

TRADE SECRET

Corporations claim that they dont want fracking

chemicals to be disclosed because the ingredient lists
are a trade secret. This logic is absurd. These are
chemicals that companies are forcing into the ground,
potentially contaminating the American publics fresh
water. The least they could do is make sure regulators
know what toxic chemicals were being exposed to.
Lets be clear. Fracking is an unsafe process that puts
the health of communities and our natural resources
at risk while at the same time doing nothing to break
our national addiction to fossil fuels.
No amount of transparency will make fracking safe. It
should be banned. But as long as the federal
government is going to allow this risky practice,
corporations should not be permitted to keep the risks
hidden.

HUNTING FOXES

Hunting foxes with hounds is a cruel and

barbaric "sport", which causes distress to
both the dogs and foxes. In addition to
terrifying shy foxes, the hunts result in the
deaths of thousands of dogs each year.
Dogs do not hunt foxes by instinct - they're trained by humans to do so. Then,
once the dogs outlive their "use" usually at about 6 years of age they are
killed! Some are killed at even younger ages if they aren't good hunters or don't
fit into the hunting dog pack. As a result, thousands of dogs are slaughtered
each year.
Foxes survive on small mammals like mice and serve as an important pest
control agent in the food chain contrary to the myth that foxes are pests.
Scientists say foxes tend to regulate their own populations. They are also
naturally fearful of people and tend to avoid humans. If these weren't good
enough reasons to end the hunts, foxes are sensitive animals who can feel fear
and pain in the same way as dogs.

UNCLE SAM
By Chris Marion
I know some people on the
organizing committee for the
Ridgewood, NJ July 4th celebration.
Several years ago they asked me to
portray Uncle Sam for them, since Im tall and slim
and have long white hair and a white beard. I was
thrilled at the offer, so I graciously accepted.
Now, rather than copy the stern-faced poster known
for decades, or the standard clown on stilts, I decided
to play the part seriously, but in a friendly manner. I
marched along calling out Happy Birthday, America!
and pointing at all the pretty women and children
while saying I WANT YOU!
One year it came back to me. I was about to get in my
car to go home when I heard a childs voice call out
Uncle Sam! I turned and was met by a boy of about
eight and his mother. Uncle Sam, he continued,
when you walked past me, you pointed at me, looked
right in my eyes and said, I WANT YOU! Did you really
mean it?

I was going to tell him that hed been just one of

thousands along the parade route, and it may have
inadvertently happened, but then I saw gratitude and
hope on his face, so I told a little white lie: I most
certainly did! He hugged me as close and hard as a
young boy can. His mom then told him to go find Daddy,
and she said to me, Uncle Sam, I dont know or care
who you really are, but our family moved here six
months ago, and the neighborhood kids wont let him
play with them. You are the first person outside of the
family who has accepted him, and I want to thank you.
She shook my hand.
I nearly cried my eyes out. See, when I was his age, I was
in a similar situation, but I had no Uncle Sam to make
me feel wanted. I thanked God that Id been in the right
place at the right time, and did something an
unidentified little boy will remember for the rest of his
life.
I WANT YOU!

The best way to get is to give.

your body sees food as an alien object, your

immune system might attack it, creating an
inflammatory reaction. Inflammation flares up
whenever your body feels threatened.

Since 1996, when GM (genetically modified) foods were

introduced into our diet, several digestive disorders related to
gut inflammation have skyrocketed. Scientists are changing
the gene sequence of some of the food we eat, making it a
foreign object, causing inflammation. Hidden inflammation is
at the root of all chronic illnesses we experienceheart
disease, obesity, diabetes, dementia, depression, cancer,
and even autism. Autism has increased 600% since GM
foods came on the market. The number of Americans with
diabetes has nearly tripled in the past two decades. Chronic
inflammation may be the engine that drives many of the most
feared illnesses of middle and old age.
For the past 20 years, much of the nations milk has come
from cows injected with a genetically engineered growth
hormone known as rBST or rBGH. Farmers inject this into
cows every two weeks to increase hormonal activity,
boosting milk production by as much as 25%. This hormone
has been linked to various types of cancer, and has been
banned in more than 30 countries. The U.S. is the only
developed nation that allows rBST/ rBGH.
The Cancer Prevention Coalition has even submitted several
petitions to the FDA asking them to ban this hormone, but the
FDA has ignored their requests. It is obvious that the FDA is
not doing the job they were created to do. The U.S. has the
highest rates of cancer in the world. The FDA has
consistently covered up warnings from its own scientists
about the health hazards of GMOs (genetically modified
organisms).

The problem: If word gets out that genetically modified foods

are potentially dangerous, the food companies billions of
dollars in profits will be in serious jeopardy. Monsanto, which
controls 90% of the food market, has made more than $116
billion in sales. AND the White House worked behind the
scenes to help Monsanto get the regulations that it wanted.

Indigenous People of the land

COASTAL CALIFORNIA
During the 17th century, Spanish voyagers moved up
the Pacific coast, charting currents and mapping
harbors. Other explorers followed, searching for
minerals and converts. These Spanish ventures were
authorized by the Spanish viceroy, but conducted at
personal expense. This meant that, most likely, they
would use any means at their disposal to recoup their
investment and turn a profit.
A wide variety of peoples lived in California in those
days. Though most of them had settled in small,
scattered communities along waterways, regional cults
and intercultural trade fused these villages into larger
networks. Until the 18th century, this dispersed
population remained free from the terrible epidemic
scourges that destroyed so many other native
populations. But in these densely populated mission
centers, diseases were easily transmitted and
thousands of natives perished. A number of native
tribes were totally, or almost totally, lost.
Among the peoples who only barely survived these
mission-borne epidemics were the Chumash, who lived
in the neighborhood of todays Santa Barbara. Starting
with a population of tens of thousands, only a few
hundred survived. At least a sense of their complex
society and sophisticated knowledge of astronomy has
been preserved.

Sometime in the late 1970s I saw Carey Reams,
PhD on 60 Minutes with my father, Nord Davis, in the
background. Carey Reams had developed a protocol of
testing urine and saliva for sugar, urine pH, saliva pH, salts
or conductivity, cell debris and ureas or utilized proteins. He
tested with certain chemicals and some mathematics. He
was able then to accurately describe peoples symptoms and
what supplements or diet changes would bring their bodies
into balance for healing. People were healed from many
diseases including over 10,000 cases of cancer. That
angered the AMA and the FDA, and Carey Reams and my
father were incarcerated for conspiracy to practice medicine
without a license, a felony with $100,000 bail. Dad was not
allowed to phone my mom nor his lawyer for 11 days.
Although he wasnt working with Carey Reams in California
he was convicted and fined $4375 because he wrote a
detailed scientific, mathematical book The Curse Causeless

In 2002 I took an introductory Reams class through the

the classes and loved it. Apparently at least for now he is
allowed to do it and teach it. Our clients have had remarkable
results.
The FDA is at work in many health areas, one of which is in
the field of essential oils. I can no longer write about what the
oils have done historically or traditionally in other countries or
cool testimonials of people sharing how the oils have helped
them, their kids, their friends or their horses and post them
on facebook. Social media is easily public domain as far as
the government is concerned. The government has
threatened to shut down Young Living and other essential oil
companies for practicing medicine without a license if
people keep posting the actions or results of the oils. Why
dont they arrest actors for promoting drugs on TV?
My defense has always been Biblical James 4:17

Dystonia is a disorder characterized

by involuntary muscle contractions
that cause slow repetitive
movements or abnormal postures.
The movements may be painful, and
some people with dystonia may have
a tremor or other neurologic
features. There are several different
forms of dystonia that may affect
only one muscle, groups of muscles,
or muscles throughout the body.
Some forms of dystonia are genetic,
but the cause for the majority of
cases is not known.

Dystonia can affect many different

parts of the body, and the symptoms
are different depending upon the
form of dystonia. Early symptoms
may include a foot cramp or a tendency for
one foot to turn or drag, or a worsening in
handwriting after writing several lines. In
other instances, the neck may turn or pull
involuntarily, especially when the person is
tired or under stress. Symptoms may cause
both eyes to blink rapidly and uncontrollably;
other times, spasms will cause the eyes to
close. Symptoms may also include tremors or
speaking difficulties.
There are several different forms of dystonia
and treatment options that can ease some of
the symptoms, but the cause is still unknown.

Never Give Up Inspirational Story

Polio and a Broken Violin String
On Nov. 18, 1995, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage
to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New
York City.
If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that
getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was
stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both
legs and walks with the aid of two crutches.
To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully
and slowly, is a sight. He walks painfully, yet majestically, until
he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his
crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one
foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends
down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the
conductor and proceeds to play.
By now, the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly
while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They
remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his
legs. They wait until he is ready to play.
But this time, something went wrong. Just as he finished the
first few bars, one of the strings on his violin broke. You could
hear it snap it went off like gunfire across the room. There
was no mistaking what that sound meant. There was no
mistaking what he had to do.
People who were there that night thought to themselves: We
figured that he would have to get up, put on the clasps again,
pick up the crutches and limp his way off stage to either find
another violin or else find another string for this one. But he
didnt. Instead, he waited a moment, closed his eyes and then
signaled the conductor to begin again. The orchestra began,
and he played from where he had left off. And he played with
such passion and such power and such purity as they had
never heard before.
September 201 5

Of course, anyone knows that it is impossible to play a

symphonic work with just three strings, but that night Itzhak
Perlman refused to know that. The audience could see him
modulating, changing, recomposing the piece in his head. At
one point, it sounded like he was de-tuning the strings to get
new sounds from them that they had never made before.
When he finished, there was an awesome silence in the
room. And then people rose and cheered. There was an
extraordinary outburst of applause from every corner of the
auditorium. Everyone was on their feet, screaming and
cheering, doing everything they could to show how much
they appreciated what he had done. He smiled, wiped the
sweat from his brow, raised his bow to quiet the room, and
then he said, not boastfully, but in a quiet, pensive reverent
tone, You know, sometimes it is the artists task to find out
how much music you can still make with what you have left.
Perhaps that is the way of life not just for artists but for all
of us. Here is a man who has prepared all his life to make
music on a violin of four strings, who, all of a sudden, in the
middle of a concert, finds himself with only three strings.
So he makes music with three strings, and the music he
made that night with just three strings was more beautiful,
more sacred, more memorable, than any that he had ever
made before, when he had four strings.
So, perhaps our task in this shaky, fast-changing,
bewildering world in which we live is to make music, at first
with all that we have, and then, when that is no longer
possible, to make music with what we have left.
Although each of us can be defined by the brief physical
time we exist on this earth, we have the ability to make
that time extend beyond our brief physical existence. We
are part of a collective consciousness, connected to each
other by our work, images, thoughts, and writing.

Eggs Who?

No worriesyou arent unpatriotic if you enjoy the brunch specialty

called eggs Benedictit wasnt named after Benedict Arnold!
One morning in 1894, Samuel Benedict staggered into the WaldorfAstoria and ordered an antidote for his hangover. He ordered bacon,
buttered toast, two poached eggs, and a hooker of hollandaise. The
matre d hotel decided to improve on this new dish by substituting
ham for bacon, and an English muffin for toast, and named the new
breakfast after Sam.

Pita bread is placed in the oven as a thin, solid piece of dough. There
is no pocket in the dough when it goes into the oven. But the oven
temperature is so high, about 900 F, that there is a rapid, explosive
expansion of the water in the dough, causing the formation of a
pocket by literally ripping the bottom part of the dough piece from
the top dough piece. Total baking time at this temperature is only
one and one-half to two minutes.

Holy Swiss Cheese!

The cheese industry calls the holes in Swiss cheese eyes. They are
created by expanding gases that are emitted by a bacterium known
as the eye former. The eye former is introduced during the early
stages of Swiss cheese production. The bacterium forms the holes,
helps ripen the cheese, and lends Swiss cheese its distinctive flavor.

Sprinkles or Jimmies? The Great Debate

Regional differences in food names, such as overstuffed sandwiches being called hoagies or submarines or
torpedoes or grinders depending on where youre from, helps explain the Sprinkles vs. Jimmies issue. The
term Jimmies is common in the Mid-Atlantic and lower northeast United States. A Russian immigrant named
Samuel Born opened a candy store in Brooklyn, NY in 1917. One of the employees, Jimmy Bartholomew, worked
the machine that produced the candy confection, and the company named it after him.

MAUDE AND MABEL

Ice Fishing

Maude and Mabel wanted to go ice

fishing, so after getting all of the right
gear, they headed toward the nearest
frozen lake. After getting comfy on
their stools they started to cut a
circular hole in the ice. Then from the heavens a voice
boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
Startled, Maude and Mabel moved further down the ice,
poured themselves some hot chocolate from a thermos and
started to cut another hole in the ice. Again the voice
boomed, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
This time quite scared, Maude and Mabel moved to the far
end of the ice. They started another hole and once again
the voice said, "THERE ARE NO FISH UNDER THE ICE."
Mabel knelt to the ground to pray, and Maude raised her
head and said, "Is that You, Lord?"
The voice answered, "NO. IT'S THE MANAGER OF THE
ICE RINK."

Alice was to bake a cake for the Baptist Church Ladies'

Group in Tuscaloosa, but forgot to do it until the last
minute. She remembered the morning of the bake sale
and after rummaging through cabinets, found an angel
food cake mix & quickly made it while drying her hair,
dressing, & helping her son pack for Scout camp.
When Alice took the cake from the oven, the center
had dropped flat and the cake was horribly disfigured.
She thought, 'Oh dear, there is not time to bake
another cake.'
This cake was important to Alice because she did so
want to fit in at her new church and in her new
community of friends. So, being inventive, she looked
around the house for something to build up the center
of the cake.
Alice found it in the bathroom - a roll of toilet paper.
She plunked it in and covered it with icing. Not only did
the finished product look beautiful, it looked perfect.
Before she left the house to drop the cake by the
church and head for work, Alice woke her daughter
Amanda and gave her some money and specific
instructions to be at the bake sale the moment it
opened at 9:30 and to buy the cake and bring it home.
When Amanda arrived at the sale, she found the
attractive, perfect cake had already been sold. She
grabbed her cell phone and called her mom.
Alice was horrified - she was beside herself. Everyone
would know! What would they think? She would be
ostracized, talked about, and ridiculed! All night, Alice
lay awake in bed thinking about people pointing fingers
at her and talking about her behind her back.
The next day, Alice promised herself she would try not
to think about the cake and would attend the fancy
luncheon/bridal shower at the home of a fellow church
member and try to have a good time. Alice did not want
to attend because the hostess was a snob who more
than once had looked down her nose at Alice because
she was a single parent and not from the founding
families of Tuscaloosa but, having already RSVP'd, she
couldn't think of a believable excuse to stay home.
The meal was elegant, the company was definitely upper
crust old South and, to Alice's horror, the cake in
question was presented for dessert! Alice felt the blood
drain from her body when she saw the cake!
She started out of her chair to tell the hostess all
about it, but before she could get to her feet, the
Mayor's wife said, 'What a beautiful cake!'
Alice still stunned, sat back in her chair when she heard
the hostess (who was a prominent church member) say,
'Thank you, I baked it myself.'
Alice smiled and thought to herself, 'God is good.'

Poetic License
masterpiece
bed in summer

Submitted by Margaret Miller

In winter I get up at night

And dress by yellow candlelight
In summer, quite the other way
I have to go to bed by day.
I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree
Or hear the grown-up peoples feet
Still going past me in the street.
And does it not seem hard to you
When all the sky is clear and blue
And I should like so much to play
To have to go to bed by day?

So she wont pluck basil this year.

So she wont grind pine nuts
with garlic and cheese, oil
of crushed olives golden as time.
Fox tells herself swift seasons change
and she cant control the world.
So music will happen a distance
away, dance will leave her
standing. Cant she wear a costume
of trees, a Wild Womans face
careening? Wisteria tangles long
reaching thin vines, yellowing now
but sassily promising
winter wont win
and purple will dangle again.

the gulf between

By Rev. Stanley L. Moody, Sr.

In a moment of time, in one last breath

Both of the brothers went to their death
What a sorrowful task to picture these scenes
For alas, alas, the gulf intervenes!
The one out hunting rabbits went
Then a bullet with his name was sent
In a moment he went to Heavenly scenes
For alas, alas, the gulf intervenes!
The other, out for a motor-ride
Unaware death was by his side
Crashed into a motor truck
In a moment he, too, was out of luck!
And, O how sad! cause I understand
For a visit of death he had not planned
So he went to the place of Hellish scenes
For alas, alas, the gulf intervenes!

music before rock and roll?

I so enjoyed Nat with his song Pretend

The words so much moved me, its meaning my friend
Rosemary Clooney doing Mambo Italiano
It became her signature song, her fans loved it so
Eddie Fisher sang the melodious Lady of Spain
It was played a thousand times, again and again
When Eddie did sing Oh My Papa
Dear Dad hes now gone, but he hasnt gone far.
Tennessee Waltz sung by Patti Page
How many remember she was called singing rage
Then Doris Day singing of her Secret Love
Did her answer for happiness come from above?
Remember the Ink Spots singing If I Didnt Care
A most popular tune that was heard everywhere
Que Sera Sera is a great sing along
Song of many emotions, made you feel you belong
Doggie in the Window made you want for a pet
An animal to love, you would never forget
Rags to Riches sung by the great Tony B.
Jo Stafford with her sultry You Belong to Me
We must not forget Mr. Johnnie Ray
His Cry and the mystery of Hernandos Hideaway
Dean Martin sang of love with Thats Amore
The emotion of love is forever to stay.
There are more than hundreds of songs that Ive known
But all are cherished as this writing has shown
One could write about music, theres really no end
For music to me is lifes greatest friend
Music has been a big part of this life
Carried me thru the good times, yes, even the strife
All songs that were noted were once #1
And listening to this music was a whole lot of fun
Given a choice and I had to choose
Before Rock and Roll is my favorite to muse

the woman with the message

By Ms. Olivia Armstrong

Im not conscious when I perform

When I speak Im not meek
When I perform a lyric some will not hear it
I dont care what they say or feel
The truth isIm just keeping it real
Truth is, when I rap my song as I perform
Thats how I pray, I must say
I dont have to figure it out
Why I do what I do, why I saywhen I say
Even though Im on displayto hear what Mother Earth
has to say
Its in the words of my lipsI dont want to miss
Its setting my soul free, thats my only God plea
Dont get me wrongI love speaking my song
Sharing it with people to help carry it on
But my real intent is always sent
Universallynot so much personally
Eliminating, yes, exposing the racist disguise
In order to keep my people alive
And thats a high five

love is love (my religion)

By Dan Sherman

Its a strange and wonderful thing

Some people act allergic to it
Others enjoy the sweet sting
It makes you feel like you are able to walk on water
It has the power to move mountains
The answer and the power is in us
Its the reason why we do
Its the reason why we don't
Its an excuse why we should
Its an excuse why we wont
No matter sex, race, color of skin
We all have our own religion
