INTRODUCTION
A. Why I Wrote This

My friend Larry has been into downloading free movies from the internet for quite a while. When I
first tried it (just recently), it seemed like a real pain-in-the-butt! Some of the issues that frustrated
me were;
1.

POP-UP ADVERTISING

Even on the few sites where I seemed to be able to actually get to the movie, I had to keep
closing many pop-up ad pages in the process.
2.

FREE.but not really free or hassle free

Lots of sites advertise free but there were issues with this too. There is registration or sign-up
and many want CREDIT CARD information, but claim they wont charge to it. Some free means
a free TRIAL with limitationsTHEN your card is charged or you have to pay.
3.

COUNTRY RESTRICTIONS

Some sites will eventually give you a message that you cant watch the movie in YOUR
COUNTRY. Dont bother trying to fake this with your computer location settings; the site knows
your country from the IP (internet protocol) address of your service provider. More on this later.
4.

TIME!

Video movie files are HUGE.about 200MB or more. Depending on all the effecting factors for
your computer and internet connection, it could take several hours to download a movie, and
many people end up starting the download at bedtime so it can be done overnight.
It might be important to you to know that most of the issues addressed here will improve
your speed NOT JUST for movies but just about ALL uses of your internet connection.
B. About This Guide
After a LOT of research and trial-and-error, I eventually overcame came all these issues, at least
to a degree that I find reasonable and acceptable. This guide tells you how I did it. I am not a
computer expert, but might be considered an advanced user.at least I am brave enough to try
and I can follow instructions when I find them.
Rather than repeat all the lengthy information that I reviewed, most of this guide will help you
avoid a lot of WASTED TIME looking in the wrong places and focusing on the wrong solutions. I
will briefly explain the issue to be addressed, why it should be addressed, and links to where to
find the instructions you need to implement the solution. There are some differences in HOW to
do these things on different systems, or I would just tell you what to do.
It will probably seem a bit complicated if you are not comfortable with accessing and changing
computer settings. Even if you are experienced at this, it will still take some of your time. You only
have to do this ONCE..then you can enjoy TONS of free movies anytime you want.

C. Watch vs. Download

1.

WATCH:

Also-Known-As (AKA) streaming, this is when you watch a video in your web browser
WITHOUT actually downloading the video file to your computer. The main advantage over
download is AVAILABILITY since you should be able to start watching the movie immediately on
demand. Additionally, you dont use any of your hard disk drive space for storage. The big
disadvantage is that most people are not able to watch streaming movies smoothly without
interruption due to buffering. Buffering is when the movie automatically pauses (stops
momentarily) to allow for more data to arrive from the website and happens when the movie is
playing (reading the data) FASTER than it can get downloaded to your computer. The buffer is
an amount of data being stored on your computer temporarily in effort to avoid these
interruptions.
2.

DOWNLOAD:

Simply put, the movie file is stored on your computer and you watch it using some type of video
player software. The advantage is that it will almost always play without interruptions (no
buffering). The disadvantage is that if your download SPEED is SLOW it can take many hours
to download (many people download overnight while they sleep). It is also the choice for those
who like to keep a library of movies for the future. I just let the internet serve as my library.
3.

QUALITY vs. FILE SIZE:

Most of the movies online are available at several video resolutions like 240p, 360p, 720p 1080,
etc. The higher the number, the better the image quality, but the larger (ie SLOWER) the file size.
Even though my laptop is connected by HDMI cable to a large, flat screen HD television, I still
watch most movies at 240p, because the image quality is very good most of the time. If you are a
downloader and TIME is not important to you (like doing it overnight), then downloaded the
HIGHEST resolution available probably makes sense.
THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT A SLOW INTERNET CONNECTION IS THE SOURCE OF
THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS IN BOTH CASES!
D. Information You Will Need to Gather
If you can follow simple step-by-step instructions, this guide will show or lead you to HOW to find
the information that you will need to know. Some of that information includes;
Your Operating System (OS) and version. Is it 32 or 64 bit? If Windows, which one?
Etc.
What is the make and model of the Wireless Network device (adapter) in your computer
or mobile? (including the Hardware version, FIRMware version and Software version)
What is the make and model of your WIFI ROUTER? (including the Hardware version,
FIRMware version and Software version)
Are there other WIFI networks within range that are interfering or conflicting with yours?
What is your connection speed before and after making the changes in this guide?
II. THE NEED FOR SPEED
A. My Own Results
I run Windows XP on a LAPTOP more than 5 years old, and my wifi router is also old. My ISP
connection (DSL) is not at one of the higher speeds offered, and I live in the Philippines (known
as among the slowest internet places in the world). When I hover my pointer over the little internet
connection icon on my TRAY (lower right in the bottom bar), a pop-up tells me a couple things,
30 August 2015

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO FREE ONLINE MOVIES

from Michael

including my SPEED. I tend to look at it a lot. Before these changes it was usually around 50
Mbps (Mega Bytes Per Second), sometimes much lower and never more than 104 Mbps. Also,
there are 4 people (network users) in my household with a total of about 7 devices using the
network..MANY at the same time, which slows down the wireless speed.
After I did all the things presented in this guide, I NOW see my speed normally in the 120 to 164
Mbps range, and sometimes as high as 300 Mbps. Sometimes I download entire movies files in
under 30 minutes!
MOST IMPORTANT IS THAT I DID NOT SPEND ANY MONEY TO ACHIEVE THIS !!!!
B. Know the Segments or legs of Your Connection
Think of your INTERNET CONNECTION as having up to 4 parts;
DEVICE to ROUTER: This applies to those of you who use wireless (WI-FI), and
includes the wireless Network Card in your PC or other device, and the wireless receiver
(router). This segment and the next make up your Local Area Network or LAN. If you use
a cable to connect your computer, you dont have this segment.
ROUTER to MODEM: Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) probably supplied you with a `
Modem, a small box that connects to your phone line or other source. The Modem
probably has 1 hardwire (network cable) connection socket for a router or for directly
wiring your PC or other device without a router.
MODEM to ISP: This circuit your phone line if you use DSL for example goes from
your house to your service providers network equipment, possible through several
locations. At this point, you are STILL not connected to the actual internet. For all
practical purposes, this segment and the next make up your Wide Area Network or WAN.
ISP to INTERNET: Your ISPs network equipment is connected to the global internet.
C. It Is What It Is
Think of the Internet as a highway with many lanes for vehicle traffic. If there are few cars (users),
you can go FAST. If the traffic is heavy with lots of cars, it can get clogged and you can only go
slowly. For both the highway and the internet, you have no control at all over how many other
people are using it at the same time as you.
It is unlikely that you can do much if anything to increase the speed of your service provider
internet connection, with the possible exception of spending more money for more bandwidth
from your service provider, between your MODEM and the INTERNET itself. Most of the time, an
ISP will offer more bandwidth (i.e. speed) for more money, but they almost always present the
options in terms of UP TO some stated Megabytes Per Second (MB/s). Almost everyone
finds that they seldom if ever actually achieve the top speed they are paying for.
Considering the issues presented so far, it is pretty clear that the only part of the internet
connection we can IMPROVE is from your PC to the Modem.
If you are among the few that connect to your modem ONLY using a network cable (wire), some
sections of this guide (regarding WIRELESS) wont help you.
D. PC or Mobile Device Not Likely the Problem
Many people think that their computer or mobile device is SLOW, sometimes because it may be
many years old, doesnt have much RAM, etc. It is highly unlikely that your device is having very
30 August 2015

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO FREE ONLINE MOVIES

from Michael

much impact on your internet experience. Most computers can handle and process the
information much faster than the data is received.
The most notable of a few POSSIBLE exceptions is the NETWORK device (aka network card)
in your computer. These devices are built to use an international standard, and the standard
changes over time to address improvements in technology. It is POSSIBLE that your computer
can use only an older (slower) standard, even though it may have been the fastest available at
the time of manufacture. Elsewhere in this guide, we will address the issue of identifying the
specifications of your device as this is one bit of the need to know information.
For wireless WIFI, you may have seen the number 802.11 with one or more letters behind it,
such as printed on material that came with your router and/or computer or mobile device. This is
the international standard (a written technical document) for WIFI communications. Both your
computer network device AND your router must be capable of a certain standard, in order to
communicate using that standard. Most devices can communicate using more than just one
standard. The LETTERS (representing a specific PART of the written standard) are MORE
IMPORTANT, with /a, /b, /g and-or /n being those you might see most often. You can learn even
more here https://www.wireless.att.com/support_static_files/KB/KB3895.html
As of this writing (August 2015), the fastest common standard in use is 802.11/n so IF your
devices network card AND your router are both capable of /n, this guide will help to make sure
that both devices are set to use it as much as possible, along with other speed tweaks. It will also
help you to identify the specifications for both devices so that you can check their capabilities.
Then you will change the SETTINGS to get maximum speed. There are also new wifi routers with
additional advanced features like multi-channel that have ways of increasing the speed, if
you feel compelled to spend some money.
The important point here is that you are NOT LIKELY to be getting the FASTEST speed
that your router and PC are capable of achieving, due to the factory default settings.
III. CUTTING TO THE OBJECTIVE
Just in case you are one that already has some experience at many of the guidelines in this
document, I will list here the basic SETTINGS that we are ultimately trying to achieve. Even if you
dont understand one or more of these, it only matters that you learn how to change them.
Knowing what they do is not too important for our objective. Keep in mind that all of these settings
are those that gave me GREAT IMPROVEMENT in my system, but I dont claim that these are
the very BEST settings or that they are the ONLY items that you can affect. Once I got good
speed, I just stopped researching, stopped experimenting, and started enjoying free movies with
minimal hassle. Dont worry; this guide will address each of these in a way that (hopefully) you
can understand;

30 August 2015

1.

Use 802.11/n as much as possible

2.

Use Quality of Service (QoS) as much as possible

3.

Though not likely to show SIGNIFICANT improvement (the above items probably WILL) you
can also find some VERY simple speed advice here http://www.wikihow.com/Increase-InternetSpeed
IV. FREE HELPFUL TOOLS
There are a number of FREE programs or applications that are particularly helpful for those afraid
of the techno-twit stuff. ALWAYS make certain to use the VERSION that applies to YOUR
operating system! Here are some Ive found among my many searches;
A. FREE Help with some of the techy stuff!
TCP OPTIMIZER: Does some of the technical settings work for you.
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php
WIRELESS INSPECTOR: Gives you information about all the other WIFI access points in
your range, including the CHANNELs being used so you can change yours if in conflict.
http://wvw.xirrus.com/wifi-inspector
INTERNET SPEED TESTING: Before you start tweaking, test and record your speed on
one or more free sites, so you can compare it later to see any improvement. There are
tons of such sites such as http://www.speedtest.net/ . Keep in mind that UPLOAD speed
(not important for movies) is always a lot faster than DOWNLOAD speed (which is MORE
IMPORTANT.)
B. More FREE Apps that you DEFINITELY Want!
GOOGLE CHROME browser: This is the browser that is best for MOVIES and it is
actually required by a few sites. https://www.google.com/chrome/browser/desktop/ Make
sure to update Chrome to the latest version, and also have the latest ADOBE FLASH
PLAYER plug-in (https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/108086?hl=en ). If you
prefer a different browser (IE, Firefox, etc).it is OK to have many installed at the same
time (I have about 5) and use any one of them anytime you want.
ADBLOCK PLUS: This is added to Chrome and GREAT when getting free movies
because it skips most all of those annoying pop-up ads encountered on nearly every free
movie site. You will not have to keep closing them anymore. https://adblockplus.org/
VIDEO DOWNLOADER PROFESSIONAL: Click one button and this will be added to
Chrome. Puts a simple download arrow in the browser bar (upper right) and it works
GREAT at PUTLOCKER.IS probably my favorite movie site so far!
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/video-downloaderprofessi/elicpjhcidhpjomhibiffojpinpmmpil?hl=en
KM VIDEO PLAYER: I have used Windows Media Player, Real Player and lots of others
and they were fine except that they would not play ALL the popular file formats (MP4,
FLV, MOV, AVI, etc). This one is free, works great, and I have not found a format yet that
it wont play. http://www.kmplayer.com/ You dont need a player to watch streaming
moviesonly to watch downloaded movies.
VPN (Virtual Private Network): If you have repeated issues with a lot of sites saying that
the movie is not available in YOUR country, the solution is to have a VPN. This is a
30 August 2015

program on your computer that when you use it routes your connection through a
server in another country (like the USA) and works with all browsers. All your
communications appear (technically) to be originating at that location, and your actual
location is anonymous. There are MANY free VPNs and they are pretty easy to install
and use, but most of the FREE ones have various limits. I have other uses for a VPN and
didnt want the limits so I spent the $40 or so for one year unlimited with PIA
(https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/ ). I picked PIA based on independent SPEED
tests I found through research. PIA has a FREE version also.
V. GETTING TO THE MOVIES
A. Introduction to On-Line Movies
You probably know that if you Google search for FREE movies online or similar, you will likely
get many hundreds of results. What you may NOT know, is that the vast majority of these sites do
not actually have the movies, rather they take you to (link) one or more OTHER SITES where you
might eventually be able to play or download the movie you want. They make money for doing
thisbut not YOUR money. Its a pain-in-the-butt because you might click on the movie you want
at several different sites, but they all take you to the same final site, which might be a site that
wants your credit card info, etc. The BIG LIE is when a site says free, no credit card, no signup, No registration and similar, which may be TRUE on THEIR site, but once you click the
movie and go to the linked siteall bets are off!
Even the limited number of major movie sites where you can ACTUALLY watch the movie, do not
host (store) the movie file on their own servers for a variety of reasons, mostly legal ones due to
copyright infringement. Thats no big deal because users dont care WHERE the movie is stored.
These major sites DO let you PLAY or DOWNLOAD the movie directly which is all that you want.
Mostly, individual people UPLOAD a movie (who knows whereand who cares) and then list it
and link to it on one or more of the major sites. Your browser never actually goes to the storage
site because the major site webpage does all the technical work.
The point is that MOST of the time, you probably want to go directly to one or more of these
major sites and skip all of the BS. One caveat: occasionally you wont find THE movie you are
seeking using the search feature of the major site, but a Google search result sometimes includes
that movie ON THE VERY SAME MAJOR SITE where you could not find it. Use that Google link
as it might be there anyway.
B. All is NOT as it Appears!
When I first started trying to watch online movies for free, I would visit a site, click to watch the
movies and an add (several) would pop-up, or I would be taken to a sign-in page, or ANYTHING
BUT actually having the movie start. I gave up a lot and just tried other sites. It turns out that
MOST of the time, you just have to keep closing all the pop-ups and you will eventually get to
watch the movie (get ADBLOCK PLUS!). I tried some of the many FREE REGISTRATIONS and
similar and still did not get to the movie in the end. What I NEVER do, is give my credit card
information, no matter what they say about not charging it. Once you find the sites where you
CAN really get to the movies easily, you will want to bookmark them in your browser for repeated
use.
C. PUTLOCKER.IS
The only movie site I am actually going to RECOMMEND is PUTLOCKER.IS (http://putlocker.is/).
First, the .IS part of the URL is important because there are lots of imitators and this is a
common tactic for nearly all the popular sites. It is among the easiest to access and use, but it is
intended for streaming, not for downloading.but VIDEO DOWNLOADER PROFESSIONAL
makes it easy to download any movie from PUTLOCKER.IS Try the site NOW by choosing any
movie and clicking the PLAY arrow or watch this or similar. Unless you have ADBLOCKER
30 August 2015

from Michael

PLUS, just keep closing every pop-up with the x in the upper right corner. When your cursor
becomes a hand on the play arrow, you have passed the ads and are ready for the movie.
When you click, a spinning arrow appears in the middle of the screen. You will have to wait
SOME time depending on your connection speed. Once a movie starts to play, one trick is to
press PAUSE and allow time (the longer the better) for a portion of the file to buffer onto your
computer. If you wait long enough, the entire movie will buffer eventually and should play very
smoothly without interruption. The timeline bar at the bottom of the video player window will show
a darker line growing slowly ahead of the marker for where you are in the timelineand this is the
buffer. Give it a try!
D. CURRENT CINEMA MOVIES
Did you know that on a rare occasion you can watch a cinema movie BEFORE it even gets to the
cinema? When a movie is ready to be released in the near FUTURE, the studio sends out special
DVDs to the movie critics that will write reviews about them, etc. It is a part of the advertising
and marketing process. These critics are all over the world and a few of them are a bit
unscrupulous it seems. Copies of their DVD ends up for sale all over the world.illegally of
course. Sometimes a copy will be uploaded to the internetthough they frequently get removed
after short time when the studio lawyers get onto it.
Another channel for seeing movies playing right now in the cinema is like one old Seinfeld TV
show episode. People actually take a video camera to the cinema and record the movie, then
make DVDs to sell and also upload it to the internet. Sometimes you can see the silhouette of a
person walking in front of the screen! Of course, the quality of these can range to the nearly
unusable levelparticularly the audio. When I find one that is really poorI skip it and wait for a
better one.
E. The Best DIRECTORY for Movies
You will probably want to bookmark a site called IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/ ). It is owned by
Amazon and is the best master list of movies I have yet to find. It does not directly sell anything
and you cant download or watch movies from the sitebut it can be VALUABLE to a movie fan,
when you want a movie but dont have a specific title in mind. The image below is part of the
screen you see when you click on a movie at IMDb. The four items circled are those I think most
valuable;
YEAR: Many movies
can have the EXACT
same name but nearly
never the same year of
release.
RATING: I have found
this to be PRETTY
ACCURATE. On the
scale 1 10, the ones
under 5 are usually not
too good.
SYNOPSIS: Great if you
never heard of the
movie.
STARS: Recognize any
big names?

Once you find a movie you want to watch, search the title on Google with something like free
movie online The Dark Knight. Look at the site address (URL) in the results and choose
PUTLOCKER.IS (if its listed) or any of the major sites. When you get to the movie on the site,
you can watch it or download it.but I usually just BOOKMARK it and keep searching IMDb for
more. When I want to watch a movie, I mostly select from all my bookmarks to save time.
VI. LETS GET STARTED
A. Gather the Information
1.

Your Operating System (OS) DETAILS

Start here (http://whatsmyos.com/ ). It will identify your computers operating system and show it
at the top. Below will be instructions on how to gather the rest of the information (version, etc.)
about THAT operating system. Just write it all down.
2.

Your Wireless Network Adapter

This is the device in your computer that connects to the internet and sometimes is called a
Network card. You can search and find instructions on how to display all the information about
this by including your computer Brand (and model if you know it) along with the words wireless
network adapter.. Most of the instructions are the same if you run a version of Windows. Try here
http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-internet-wireless/f/3324/t/19527170
3.

Your WIFI Router

Just look all over your router and take note of the brand, model, and other information shown
there. The defaults IP address (something like 192.168.1.1) and the default ADMINISTROR user
name (often something like ADMIN) and password (also often ADMIN) are ESSENTIAL. The
rest of the needed data about your router will be obtained by accessing the SETTINGS using a
browser later in this guide.
4.

Other Routers in Range

Download, install and run Wireless Inspector (http://wvw.xirrus.com/wifi-inspector ). There are a

total of 11 channels for WIFI. Make a note of the channels being used. You might check this a
few times over a few days in case there are some that are not active 24/7. Normally, channels 1,
6 and 11 are used the most since they tend to be factory default. Pick any unused channel for
use later in this guide.
5.

Do Your Internet Speed Test

Nothing to download or install, its done online. Use http://www.speedtest.net/ or any other one
that you wish. Note the final UPLOAD SPEED and DOWNLOAD SPEED.
IN THE SECTIONS BELOW, YOU PROBABLY WANT TO GOOGLE SEARCH INTRUCTIONS
FOR YOUR SPECIFIC SYSTEM. TO DO THIS, TYPE IN YOUR DEVICE MAKE/MODEL PLUS
THE KEYWORD(S) SHOWN. Your computer USERS MANUAL will probably be MOST
HELPFUL with these steps and/or the brand website.
B. Check / Change Your Network Adaptor Settings
Keyword: Wireless Network Adapter Settings - Regardless of the brand of your computer and
there are MANY - there are not too many brands of wireless network adapters that are inside
these computers by the factory. INTEL is among the most used. This INTEL page will be your
guide (http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-025393.htm ). Your search will probably
find a similar guide for your MAKE/MODEL if not Intel. You will find links to your specific operating
systems there. You MAY find this information in the SUPPORT section of your COMPUTER
brand website. Find and set the following:

BANDWIDTH SPEED = 20/40 AUTO

WIRELESS MODE = Choose and enable the setting that has the most standards but
INCLUDES 802.11/n
POWER = For everything that sets power, choose the setting that uses THE MOST
power.
SECURITY TYPE = Choose WPA2/AES
QoS (Quality of Service) = ENABLED
WMM = If you find any setting related to WMM, set it to ENABLED.
C. Check / Change Your Wireless Router Settings
Connect to your wireless network (Network Connections)
Open your web browser
In the address bar (not doing a search), type in the IP address for your router (usually
192.168.1.1) that was printed on your device (no http//: etc, just the numbers with the
dots).
It should now ask you to enter the router administrator username and password (often ADMIN
and ADMIN are the default from the factory). If these have been changed from the default, use
the ones that are current. If they have been changed and YOU DONT KNOW what they are, you
will need to RESET your router to the factory defaults. See you brand/model website or users
manual for how to reset, and for what the default logon will be after reset. It usually involves
holding in a tiny button on the router through a small hole marked RESET for about 5 to 10
seconds.
Once you gain access to the router settings, you will find a menu to various sections. Use it to
find and do the following;

Channel = Set the channel to one NOT being used by any other network in range. More
info here http://www.extremetech.com/computing/179344-how-to-boost-your-wifi-speedby-choosing-the-right-channel

Qos = Find and ENABLE QoS (Quality of Service) More info here
http://www.itbusiness.ca/news/how-to-configure-your-router-for-blazing-speeds/14224

WMM = Find and ENABLE WMM (same info link as QoS)

WPA2/AES = Find and set the security mode to WPA2/AES. More info here
http://www.howtogeek.com/204697/wi-fi-security-should-you-use-wpa2-aes-wpa2-tkip-orboth/ . You will need to set a password to share with all who are authorized to use your
wireless network.

Find the REBOOT button and use it, or just unplug power to the routerwait 10 seconds
or more.plug it back in, and give it time to boot and connect.

VII. IF YOU CANT CONNECT TO THE INTERNET WHEN FINISHED
OK..we all do it sometimes. Maybe you made a mistake or maybe I DID somewhere. You cant
connect or something is not working that DID WORK before you started. You go back over all the
changes, you read the user manuals, you do internet research but still its not correct. Your
WORST CASE and it is not too bad is that you RESET your router and network adapter to the
FACTORY DEFAULTS. For the ROUTER, this was explained above. You may have seen a
button for this among your ADAPTER settings also, but the info will be online for your
brand/model.
VIII. Dont Forget About TV Shows too!
In addition to free movies, the internet is great for your favorite TV SERIES. Many movie sites
have a section for this as well. I like it for many reasons;

I hate to start watching a TV series after it has already been on for a while. I dont know
what is going on. The internet lists can include every episode of every season, so I can
start at the beginning.

I hate those to be continued episodes. Using the internet, I dont need to wait a week.

I hate commercials and other periodic breaks in the show.
