How senior donors can avoid scams

Con artists masquerading as charities
can victimize anyone, but seniors are
especially vulnerable to such criminals.
Men and women who perpetrate charitable fraud often target older men and
women, feeling that seniors are more
likely to have a significant amount of
money in their bank accounts and less
likely to report crimes for fear of embarrassment.
But even if seniors are prime targets
for charitable fraud, they still can take
steps to safeguard themselves from scammers looking to exploit their generosity.
Never donate over the phone. No
reputable charity will insist on a donation
over the phone. When a person calls
and says they represent a charity, they
should be willing to send you information
in the mail so you can further explore
their organization before making your
final decision. If a caller attempts to pressure you into donating over the phone,
hang up.
Keep a list of organizations you
have donated to in the past. Many people who perpetuate charitable fraud reference a past relationship or donation
history between their victims and the
charity the criminal is claiming to repre-

sent. Maintain a list of your donation history, including the organizations you
have donated to and the amount of those
donations. This can help you verify if the
person calling, emailing or visiting you is
telling the truth.
Do not feel obligated to give.
Many charities send gifts to their donors
as a token of appreciation for their support. Some criminals masquerading as
charities will send gifts to potential victims in an attempt to fool them into writing a check. Whether a charity is legitimate or not, seniors should not feel obligated to donate simply because they
received a gift. If you receive a gift and
want to donate, confirm that the organization that sent you the gift is legitimate
and not an imposter organization that is
baiting you with a gift. If the gift was
accompanied by a donation form, do not
fill out that form, choosing instead to
make a direct donation via the organization's website, a site you should find independent of the mailer/gift you received,
or mail a check directly to the organization after you independently confirm its
address, be it through your own research
or by contacting the Better Business
Bureau (www.bbb.org).

Insist that your personal information is not shared.

Before making a charitable
donation, donors are often
notified that their contact
information is likely to be
sold to or traded with other
charities. This can lead to
an influx of charitable solicitations that elderly men and
women may find overwhelming. So prior to making a donation, speak
directly with the charity and
insist that none of your information be shared with other
charities or organizations. If
this cannot be arranged,
find an organization willing
to make such a concession
and contribute to that charity instead.
Ask for help. If you
are confused when it comes
time to make your annual
donations, ask a son,
daughter or trusted confidante for help so you can
rest easy knowing your Many seniors are targeted for charitable fraud via the
donation goes where you Internet.

color and meticulous detail. Joyce paints
from life and from photographs to push the
colors found in nature and to capture the

on a pond and all the life in it and surrounding it.
A member of the League of Milwaukee
Artists and the Wisconsin Painters and
Sculptors, Joyce has exhibited in several

Museum. In 2005 she won the Award of

BALLOONS
FOR ANY
OCCASION!

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a bad mouth! I have

loose teeth, root tips, bleeding gums and bad
mouth odor. I really want to have a smile I can be
proud of for once in my life.
I am on a fixed income so I do not have all the
money for a glamorous makeover but I am
hopeful you can help me. I saw your website and
realize you have helped thousands of patients
with problems similar to mine. Please let me
know how you can help me. Ann
Dear Ann, when people are in pain or ashamed
of their mouth the first step is always the hardest!
Since we see people with severe dental issues you
can be assured that you will never be judged. The
concepts that Dr. Winter lectures on include
"Upgradeable Dentistry" which allows people to
pick a plan that will sequentially help people
improve their smiles at a pace they can afford.
If you must have dentures we may offer deluxe
dentures with soft liners to give you the ultimate
in comfort. Or we may offer small diameter
implants to help hold your dentures firmly in
place without the need for messy adhesives.
From there we discuss whether we can perform
grafting to improve the amount of bone you have
so that implants can be done within 8-12 months
while avoiding more expensive grafting
procedures. Perhaps we can discuss a path where
2-4 implants are placed each year and you would
go from a removable implant retained denture to
a "fixed bridge". That option would allow you to
have your teeth in your mouth 24/7 without the
embarrassment of removing them at night.
So having the flexibility to discuss dynamic
treatments is what we offer at Hampton Dental
Associates.

Free public tours at the

new recycling facility
Residents are invited to tour the newly
opened City of Milwaukee/Waukesha
County Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
located at 1401 W. Mt. Vernon Ave.,
Milwaukee on Saturday, September 19
from 10 a.m. 3 p.m. during Doors Open
Milwaukee, an event that opens doors to
the public for tours to over 150 buildings
in the Milwaukee area at no charge.
This publicly-owned, single sort recycling facility is a partnership between
Waukesha County and the City of
Milwaukee that is privately operated by
ReCommunity Recycling. Due to strong
household recycling participation, the
Waukesha County recycling program has
been able to return over $13 million in dividends to tax payers in partner communities since 2001. Waukesha County anticipates that single sort recycling will
increase recycling rates for continued program success to maintain dividend payments. Similarly, the City of Milwaukees
recycling program revenues have averaged $1.5 million per year since 2004
and have off-set over $16 million in residential recycling collection costs over that
time.
The new MRF began operating in

March which is now sorting and processing recyclables from approximately

270,000 households served by single sort
recycling programs in the 25 participating
Waukesha County communities and the
City of Milwaukee. The MRF is designed
to process 35 tons per hour or 60,000
tons per year of recyclables.
Visitors can take a self-directed tour at
their own pace to view the state-of-the-art
equipment and learn the process of single
sort recycling. While the equipment will
not be operating, visitors can still get an
up-close look at the tip floor, the pre-sort
cabins, paper and cardboard screens,
balers, optical sort machines, sorter platforms, and finished bales ready for shipment to secondary processors or industries
such as paper mills. Through a cooperative effort, staff from Waukesha County,
the City of Milwaukee and Keep Greater
Milwaukee Beautiful will be available
throughout the facility to provide interpretation and answer questions. Visitors
must wear closed-toe shoes to be allowed
entry.
For more information visit waukeshacounty.gov/recycling or call 262-8968300.
