organization. This could be an organization where a team member, friend, or family member
currently works or previously worked or any other organization.
The project report requires the following sections, described in detail on the following pages:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

Background of the company

Determination of Job Requirements
Development of Recruitment Plan
Development of Selection Plan
Comparison of the Proposed Plans and the Current Plans

1. Background. Provide background information of the organization selected and a general

description of the target job.
2. Determination of Job Requirements. Begin by analyzing the appropriateness and
comprehensiveness of the existing job description and job specifications for the target
position. To help you evaluate existing materials and create a new and improved job
description, job specifications, etc. you need to conduct a job analysis. You need to
interview at least one person currently holding or supervising the target position.
You can use any of the job analysis techniques covered in the text and in class to gather
information about the position. Questions to address for each job include:
a. How well does the existing job description capture the actual tasks, duties and
responsibilities (TDRs) of a job incumbent?
b. How well do the existing job specifications capture the knowledge, skills, abilities, or
other characteristics (KSAOs) needed to successfully perform the job?
c. Are all of the TDRS and KSAOs listed in the existing documents really necessary?
d. Are the existing description and specifications sufficiently detailed to develop sound
recruitment and hiring plans?
Include your final job description and job specifications in the body of your paper; include
the organizations original job description/specifications as appendices.
Make very clear what the job description/specifications looked like before and what they
look like after your revisions. For the target job you must include a Job Requirements
Matrix in this section of your report.
3. Development of Recruitment Plan. Based on your final job description/specifications,
outline the steps that you will take to recruit applicants for the target position. Be sure to
address both internal and external recruiting sources as appropriate. Provide a description of
your recommendations for generating a sufficient applicant pool. Your plan should include:
a. Where you will look (i.e., in what segments of the labor market you are likely to find
applicants with the desired KSAOs)
b. How you will look (i.e., the methods that will best allow you to reach those individuals)
c. Identification of existing jobs in the organization (if any) that should be appropriate
sources of replacement staff for the target job. Explain why these should be appropriate
feeder jobs.
It is very important to justify all of your choices by addressing issues such as the size, cost,
fit, and diversity of the applicant pool you expect would be generated. You must address
these issues for each proposed recruiting method. Remember to refer back to the Job
Requirements Matrix you developed for the Determination of Job requirements section and
indicate how the methods you plan to use for recruiting for this position will help to identify
candidates with the required KSAOs.

4. Development of Selection/Assessment Plan.

For the target job, develop a
selection/assessment plan and outline how you will assess each of the critical KSAOs for
the target position in the selection process, including:
a. Summarize your proposed selection plan in a table that clearly illustrates how and when
you will assess each KSAO.
b. At least one of your selection criteria must be an interview. For this procedure, please
include a list of questions you would use to assess the KSAOs being assessed in your
interview. Target 2 3 questions per KSAO assessed in the interview. Indicate the type
of interview used and justify its use.
c. Based on your proposed selection plan table, provide a detailed descriptions of all the
selection devices you plan to use (e.g., interviews, tests, work samples, assessment
centers, reference checks), detailing exactly how and when you will use each selection
method for the target position.
d. Explain why each of your selection methods is appropriate for assessing the indicated
KSAOs.
e. Address and justify the cost of your proposed selection plan.
5. Comparison of the Proposed Plans and the Current Plans. Describe the ways in which
the proposed plans for staffing of the target job are similar to and different from the plans
currently used by the organization. Address recruiting and selection separately. Specific
questions to address include:
a. In what ways do your proposed plans improve upon the current plans?
b. Do your proposed plans alleviate issues or concerns that are present in the current
systems? How?
c. Why should the company use your proposed recruiting and selection plans for the job in
question?
This discussion should follow directly from and be strongly supported by the detailed
information you provided in earlier sections of your project.
