CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Basically, humans are the most perfect creature created by God. Humans are
given the advantage of intelligence. With this intelligence, humans can maintain and
improve the quality of life through education. Education is the effort in forming
whole human beings. However, to form a complete person who is able to optimize
brilliance necessary of guidance and counseling as a form of learning. In this case,
education becomes important as the efforts in growing one's potential. And the
teacher's role is also to be absolute in providing education to students.
Attention and the ability of each student in learning is not always the same. For that
a teacher as educators also must analyze learning problems and are able to be a
motivator in giving encouragement to student learning.

learning. The role of a teacher is no less important as an educator a teacher also
must be able to be a motivator in giving encouragement to student learning. To
attract students' attention to the stimulus of learning, a teacher can use several ways
such as utilizing the medium of instruction or interesting props, ask questions and
give praise, make learning activities become more varied and not monotonous, and
seeking stimulus learning by others. In addition, a teacher must also be able to

create a comfortable learning environment for students and keep students on lessons
boredom.
To improve the quality of student learning outcomes, teachers must be able to
give motivation to the students. Motivation is the driving force of learning within
students. Most students do not currently have a high motivation in learning. They
tend to be busying themselves with other issues that are considered more attractive.
For that teachers should be able to guide and lead students to learning activities for
which there is potential in him to grow. With the motivation of a teacher will evoke
a sense of awareness and willingness of students to learn and achieve.
In learning activities, the role of motivation become very important. With the
motivation of a teacher will make students have the passion and willingness to learn
are more active, creative and innovative. The high motivation in learning associated
with high academic achievement. Based on all these matters, the writer chose SMP
Dwi Tunggal Jambi as research objects in the school where students have the
potential to excel in learning, but has not been motivated to learn English lesson.
Based on the description above, the writer interested to discuss it in the form of
thesis entitled: "THE CORRELATION BETWEEN MOTIVATION AND
STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT IN LEARNING ENGLISH AT SMP DWI
TUNGGAL JAMBI".

B. Identification of Variables
Based on the background of the problems described previously, the writer
makes the identification variables as follows:

1. Variable X, namely student motivation.


2. Variable Y, namely student achievement in learning English.

C. Limitation of Variables
The research limited into 2 variables : variable X and variable Y, where
variable X is the motivation of students and the variable Y is the achievement of
students in learning English.

D. Formulation of Problem.
Based on the issues above, the writer gives a formulation of the problem under
study as follows:
1. How is the students motivation of SMP Dwi Tunggal Jambi in learning English.
2. How is the students achievement of SMP Dwi Tunggal Jambi in learning
English.
3. Is there a correlation between student motivation and achievement in learning
English.

E. Objective of the Research


The objective of this research are:
1. To see how is the students motivation of SMP Dwi Tunggal Jambi in learning
English.
2. To see how is the students achievement of SMP Dwi Tunggal Jambi in learning
English.

3. To find out the correlation between motivation and student achievement in


learning English.

F. Benefit of the Research


The benefits to be achieved from the research undertaken are:
1. Theoretical benefits:
a. Adding science in education.
b. Reference materials and consideration for subsequent researchers.
2. Practical benefits:
a. For the teacher, as an input in the learning activities in order to improve
student achievement.
b. For students, as an input so that students can follow the learning activities
with optimal.
c. For students, as an input so that students can follow the learning activities
with optimal.
d. For researchers, as stock became educators in the future, adding to the
knowledge and experience.

G. Hypothesis
Ha: There is a correlation between motivation and student achievement in learning
English
Ho: There is no correlation between motivation and student achievement in
learning English
