Choosing a Career Path.

By: MOHD NUR SALAM BIN SAIPIN.
How do we choose a career? Since a persons career is a very personal choice
and reflects his or her personality, creativity, interests, and goals, it is sometimes
beneficial if one begins by choosing a career path, instead of a career.
Often counsellors at school will conduct career path sessions with students to
assist in matching innate skills and abilities with short and long-term goals. For
example, if a person shows interest in the field of biology and also enjoys dealing
with people, the following is an example of a sample career path he or she might
consider: If the person wanted to enter the workforce immediately upon graduating
from college, he or she may explore the areas of pharmaceutical or medical sales,
working for a medical or scientific publishing company in which there are research,
copywriting, or editing positions, or he/she may seek an alternate route as a biology
teacher. All of these positions would serve as rungs on his/her career ladder.
As the person continues to climb the ladder to a successful career, the
prospect of additional promotions within or outside his company, continued
educational opportunities, and the eventual possibility of starting his or her own
business are also career pathing options.
The counsellor often talks with the students at length to explore the subjects
the individual liked in school, what he or she considers to be personal strengths and
abilities, as well as what other people have said through evaluations at work or
volunteer activities. The counsellor will ask about the persons daydreams, his or her
ideal job, and aspirations. Students or clients often feel that the time spent with the
counsellor leads to more insight and investigation regarding several possible career
paths.
Now, getting back to the question of "How do I choose a career? The answer
is today, people do not choose one career. They choose career paths that can twist

and turn to meet the changing economy. Statistics show that in recent years people
change jobs at least three to four times in their lifetimes, and they hold an average
of seven jobs. Remember, when we say average, that also means that 50 per cent of
the people hold more than seven jobs.

Building career paths and practicing the art of personal marketing will be an
invaluable tool in choosing flexible career options in the 21st Century. In addition,
becoming a generalist in ones field, keeping a flexible outlook regarding the
workplace, and taking advantage of the continuing learning opportunities will be
critical to ones survival in the workforce.
A common barrier facing the recent high school or college graduate is that
many times the person is not aware of his or her own strengths and abilities that
translate into marketable skills. The key to a successful job search is marketing
transferable skills to prospective employers and contacts. A wide variety of jobs do
exist in todays marketplace for general and liberal arts graduates in such fields as
sales, management, and government. In order to be hired into these positions,
recent graduates must be able to communicate their transferable skills.
The key transferable skill for the 21st Century is the ability to work as part of
a team. There will be cross-functional teams and flexible work centres organized
around projects and processes. The United States has become a service economy
with emphasis on quality customer service. Those graduates seeking professional
employment will need the ability to work in a variety of organizations with many
types of employees.
Our country industry is outsourcing many of its services that were previously
performed internally, so flexibility in work styles will be important for recent college
graduates. New work styles include telecommuting (working out of ones home) and
serving as a temporary and contingency employee. Thinking creatively and globally,
as well as demonstrating the value of the experiences gained in studying abroad are
definite advantages in securing employment. Other transferable skills cited by
human

resource

professionals

as

being

highly

desirable

including

,budget

management, supervising, public relations, coping with deadline pressure, dealing

effectively with people in ambiguous situations, speaking publicly to get your ideas
across to others, writing, organizing/managing/coordinating, and computer literate.
Planning ahead is advisable while one is still in college. Even if a person is an
accounting major, he or she may find it advisable to take various electives in liberal
arts in order to be viewed as a well rounded and a trainable employee. One can
investigate internships and foreign study programs offered by the college. Look for
creative college courses that partner actual business people with students, either
inside or outside the classroom.

The best way to prepare for a career is to talk to as many people as one can
in the profession. In career counselling, this process is called "shadowing." When a
prospective job seeker shadows a person in the field of computer programming, he
or she spends an entire day or more with that person at the work site, and observes
the day to day activities associated with the job. The person might ask questions
about what the employee likes about the job and some of the things that the
employee dislikes. Shadowing is also helpful to explore salary ranges and the
potential for growth and advancement.
Furthermore, planning a job search will soon become a full-time job! The
quickest way to find a job is to devote at least 25 hours a week to an individual
search and to obtain two interviews per week. The word interview can mean an
informal informational meeting or a formal job interview for a particular job. A
contact is also a person who can refer you to more resources, not necessarily the
one who has a job available.
When looking into career choices, a person must realize that he or she spends
more time at work than at home. Personal identity, competency, status, and self
esteem are all tied into the type of work a person does. An individuals career is the
totality of his or her lifes work. If one chooses the right career path, it can be
creative, fun,

challenging,

accomplishment.

lucrative,

and

great

pleasure

and

The next thing we must consider is how we want to get there, and what
obstacles lie in our path. For such a vision is never self-fulfilling. We cannot stand
idly by and expect our dreams to come true under their own power. The future is not
a gift, it is an achievement." Good Luck!

Enticing Jobs for People with Disabilities.

By: MOHD NUR SALAM BIN SAIPIN
There are more than 7 billion people in this world, every single one of them
has the right to a career. We all have something to contribute to our family, the
society, and our beloved country, even people with disabilities feels the same way.
Thats why its important to understand that good jobs for people with disabilities
are possible to find. No matter what type of disabilities they might have, they
deserve a chance to discover the satisfaction that often comes from realizing and
using their own true abilities.
Besides, more and more organization is now actively creating jobs for
disabled people. In fact, appealing opportunities can be found within nearly every
industry, the government sectors, healthcare, technology, and financial sectors, in
particular, are increasingly becoming more welcoming to those who live with
physical or mental challenges.

In Malaysia, there thousands of adults live with mobility or other physical

limitation, but having such disability doesnt always have to mean giving up a
career. Regardless of whether your impairment is a result of a congenital defect,
accidental injury, or something like neuromuscular disease, it may be possible for
you to build a satisfying vocational life.
Some of promising occupational areas that disabled people might want to
explore, one of them is medical administration, you dont usually need to be very
mobile to work in a medical office or hospital department, and many employers in
this industry value having people on staff who understand what some of the patients
might be going through. Plus, areas like medical billing and coding often provide
opportunities for telecommuting.
In addition, if you live with disability, then you have the potential to offer a lot
of useful insights to companies and other organizations that want their brands,
products, and services to connect with people like you. The marketing industry is full
of ways to use your creativity or analytical abilities.
There are also choices of careers for those that have intellectual disabilities,
such as culinary arts. Commercial kitchens offer opportunities that are well-suited to
both those who need routine as well as those who have a lot of inherent creativity.
Many people who have an intellectual disability are very artistic in nature.
Veterinary assistant could also be one of the best career choices out there for
those who have disabilities. There is something about working with animals that can
really draw out the very best in a person. So if you loves animal such as dogs, cats,
and other critters, then this might be an excellent option for you.
People with conditions such as Asperger syndrome can flourish in a career
that utilize their ability for focused and intelligent problem solving, without having to
be around too many people. Maybe you fit that profile and will go on to become
something like video game programmer or mobile software developer.
There are also careers for those who are visually impaired person. Teaching
and early childhood educations are one of it. Young people especially kids are
curious and always looking for a new inspiration. As a person who is blind or has
impaired vision you can bring your distinctive insights to the classroom or

playground, which can challenge students imaginations and inspire them to grow. As
a visually impaired person, one of your gifts might be an enhanced ear for music,
and that could mean you have a talent just waiting to be used for recording, editing,
or mixing songs and sound. Theres a band called Caliph Busker that performed in
Anugerah Juara Lagu 29 and they won an award there. This prove that even a
disabled people be very successful if they work hard.
What about those who are deaf or hearing impaired? For your information
people in this category have a higher rate of employment than any other group. Like
those with vision disabilities have found career opportunity in just about every
sector. Even so, some options stand out such as, Art performing. Talented
performers come in all variety, but many deaf people have proven that they have
the skills and charm to excel in areas like acting and show production. In science
field, whether it is biotechnology, chemistry, or physics, many people with hearing
impairments have achieved incredibly meaningful careers in the field.
There are many choices of jobs that can be done by a disabled person. From
intelligent based to arts and creativity based jobs. Employees and organisation
should not belittle those disabled people, they should never judge a book by its
cover, this is because theres always a possibility that a disabled people can be
more competent and efficient doing the jobs if compared to the normal ones.
Remember, theres always hope for the willing.

How to Conduct a Forum.

By: MOHD NUR SALAM BIN SAIPIN.

What is a forum? By definition a forum is A medium of discussion conducted

out of doors where public business is transacted.

A panel forum is basically a

discussion of a subject of public interest in which few persons(the panel) carry on

the conversation in front of the people/audience. At the end of the discussion
audience also participates, in the end of the forum there would have a Questions

and Answer session for the audience to ask question to the panels regarding the
issue that the panels discussed in the forum. Usually the audience put important
question and the experts (panels) answers them and clarify them. It is a wellpublicized public meetings. It gives chances for people from diverse backgrounds to
express the views. The forum is a first step towards understanding the communitys
needs.
Main purpose of the panel discussion or forum is to reproduce the features of
a small discussion group for the benefit of a larger group. The panel would provide
information new facts to the audience. If they are discussing about a current issue,
they would analyse the problem from a different angles.
The members of a forum or panels discussion consist of, moderator,
panellists, instructor and the audience. The instructor plays an important role in a
forum, they plans how, where, and when the forum will be organised. They also
prepares the schedule for the forum. The moderator should have mastery over the
theme or issue of the forum. They keeps the interaction on the theme and
encourages interaction among members of the forum. As a moderator they would
summarizes and highlights the points of the issues discussed. The moderator should
be able to speak clearly; be reasonably familiar with the issues to be covered; be
able to organise the ideas expressed on the index cards; keep the audience in line;
and keep the panellists within their limits. The panellist, usually there a 3 to 4
panellist in a discussion. They sit in the semi-circle shape in front of the audience.
The moderator sits in the middle of the panellist. All the panellist should have
mastery over the subject matter in the discussion. Lastly the audience, they also
plays an important role during a forum. Audience are allowed to put questions and
seek clarification from the panellist about the subject discussed. They can put
forward their point of view and their experiences regarding the theme.

How to conduct or organise great panel discussion or forum ? First and

foremost, is the length and panel size. The ideal length for a panel discussion is 45
minutes to one hour. The ideal number of participants is 4 to 5 including the

moderator. Next is choosing the moderator. To have a great forum, you should have
a strong moderator, and the role of moderator is very different from the role of a
panellist. The best moderator is someone who have experience in moderating
forums in the past, knows a lot about the panellist, and realizes that he/she is there
to guide the discussion. A great moderator make sure that the panellist connect with
the audience.
Furthermore, to conduct a forum the panellist should have guidelines and
advance preparation regarding the subject or issues that they are going to discuss in
the forum. The organiser should communicate with the panellist at least twice
before the event. They should explain how the session will proceed, and what each
panellist should be prepared to do. Panellist are more comfortable and ready when
they have a sense or clue what topics theyll be discussing during the forum, an a
few of the questions you may ask. Then comes the setting of the stage, nice stage
set-up, with coffe tables and comfy chairs for panellist. The chairs should be
arranged in a slight semi-circle shape. The audience sits should not be too far from
the stage.
Everyone of the participants of the forum needs a microphone, it can be a
clip-on lavalier microphone, or handheld or microphone perched on an adjustable
stand, but it would for everyone to use a single microphone. At the very least, make
sure that your stage and your panellist are positioned in the brightest part of the
room so the audience would have a clear vision of the panellist.
Audience interaction is also a crucial part of a forum. A very basic technique is
starting the forum session by polling the audience. If your panellist agree on one
question, you can ask the audience if anyone is willing to stand up and answer the
question or offer a dissenting view of the issue discussed. Last but not least is the
question and answer session. The organiser should allocate at least, 15 minutes for
this session. The moderator miht also choose to let the audience that he or she will
take questions throughout the panel discussion, if audience member raise their
hands. During the main question and answer period, the moderator should try to
avoid calling on the same person twice until everyone has gotten a chance to ask a
question.

Reflective
Im very grateful to everyone that is involved in our coursework, especially to
my group and our beloved lecturer Mr Izzat Abdullah and Mr Yakub Ismail. In this
coursework we were asked to collect and compile in a folio two relevant issue from
different sources on an issue related to one of the themes given, that is, sports,
health, career, education, environment, social issues and one article on How to
Conduct a Forum.
The themes that I chose wasCareer. This task is very interesting, after I read
few articles about career, I wrote two articles about it. The first one is Career Path,
the second one was Enticing Job for People with Disabilities.
Furthermore, while writing the articles I have applied the knowledge of
grammar rules learnt during class. I have increases my critical reading skills and
creative writing skills. Ive also learned to write a variety of text for different
purposes.
The second task was to synthesise and organise the main ideas from the
articles into one graphic organiser. From doing this task, Ive learn how to make a
graphic organiser using Microsoft Word. I have increases my computer literation
skills. Ive also learned how to synthesise and organise ideas from the articles into a
non-linear form such as mind maps.
As a conclusion, this task was a good learning experience for me. It enables
me as a student to apply what we had learned in class.
