overnearlytwodecades

theoptiontochoose

HarvestMoon3D:ANewBeginning(hereafterreferredto

HarvestMoonforthe
3DS...butthefirstone(TaleofTwoTowns)wasaport
fromtheoldDSand
soitwasnotreallydesignedaroundthe3DSsystem(it

boost,thereisstillalotofchangefrompastHM
gamestothisone.
Thebiggestnewfeatureinthisgameistheamountof
CUSTOMIZATIONavailable.
Believeitornot,inpreviousgamesinthisseries

yourcharacterwas
predesignedandcouldn'tbealteredatall,even
thoughpeoplelove
personalizingthings.MaybeMARVELOUSwashopingthis
gamewouldattractnew
playerstotheseries(hence'ANewBeginning')sothey
reallyincreasedthe
amountofcustomizingyoucandotoyourcharacter.
Whenyoustartupyour
fileyougetacharactercreationscreenthatgivesyou
lotsofoptions...
welltherearealotofhairstylesandcolorsat

Youareabletochoosewhichsexyouwanttobewithout
havingtobuya
separatecopyofthegame...sothat'sprogress,at

Thecustomizationdoesn'tendwithyourcharacter,

yourtown,youwillbeimmediatelymadeintoMAYORof
thetownandbegiven

opinionthoughHM:ANBisthesuperiorgamebecauseit
allowsyoutomarryand
bedcharactersandasfarasIknowNintendohasyetto
implementthatfeature
inAnimalCrossing,muchtothechagrinofcertain
AC:NLfansI'msure.
Anyways,gettingbacktoHM:ANB,youreallyaregiven
theoptionofcreating
buildingsandmovingthemaroundtown.Itsoundslikea
lotoffreedom...and

itis...withacatch.ThedownsidetoMARVELOUS
designingthisgamearound
newplayers(whichisreallyonlyatheoryofmine)is
thattheyfeltthe
needtoincludearidiculousnumberofTUTORIALSand
onlyintroduceyoutonew
charactersandtowncustomizationoptionsslowly.So
EVENTUALLYyouwillhave
alarge,populatedtownandyouwillbeableto
customizeithoweveryouwant,
butforthefirstfewmonth/seasonsyouaregoingtobe
VERYCONSTRAINEDin
whatyouareabletodo.That'sjusthowitis.
Oh...andthereareothernewthingstoo,besidesthe
customizationstuff.
There'sanonlineitemtradingsystem.Andthere's
probablyotherstufftoo.
3.Whatisthepointofthisgame?Whywouldanyone
wanttoplaya'farmsim'?
Thisgameisaboutyourcharacter(hereafterreferred
toas'YOU'becauseI
expectyoutoidentifywithyourcharacter)comingto
ownadilapidatedfarm
andundertakingtheenjoyablechallengeoffixingitup
andturningitintoa
successfulenterprise.Thesegameshavesubstantial
farminggameplayelements
whichreallydigintoyourconsumeristand
entrepreneurialdesirestomakea
lotofmoneyandbuyalotofstuff.Andwhileyouare
indulginginthewish
fulfillmentofrunningyourownbusinessandmaking
easymoney,thegame's
worldofinterestingcharacterswillbesurreptitiously
sinkingtheirhooks
intoyouandarrestingyourinterestandaddictingyou
tocontinuallybuying
HarvestMoongames.

ThisparticulargametakesthestandardHMpremiseand
expandsonitquitea
bit.Thistimearounditisnotjustyourfarmthat

designershavedeliberatelysetaboutdelayingyour
accesstothedifferent
gamesystemsandvillagers,andwheneversomethingnew
isintroduceditcomes
withatediousTUTORIAL.Thismakesthefirstmonthof

thegameaverysluggish
experiencewithnotmuchtodo.AllIcansayisthat
ITGETSBETTERand
recommendthatyoujustplantandwaterandsellcrops
andthenjustgoto
sleepearlyeverydaytospeedthegamecalendaralong
untilitgetstothose
dateswheninterestingthingsstarthappening.
Ifyoujusthurryforwardtothefirstsummerthenthe
optiontoEDITthe
TOWNandmovebuildingsaroundandwhatnotwillbe
unlocked,andtheMAYOR
willgiveyouTOWNRESTORATIONPLANSthatfunctionas
