FLIPPING THE PAGES OF REALITY

Books are reservoir of knowledge and wisdom. It has different classifications which will
give choice to its readers which are people who have different taste and preferences. Some books
are for serious reading, some are intended to enrich our knowledge and learning. Many books
give us an insight into various aspect of life. Books on travel and adventure infuse into us a spirit
of fearlessness and adventure. The reading of novels is a pleasant pastime for many of us. This
provides an escape from the din and bustle of life. Reading books is a way to discover something
new. We might also enter into a different world through our own imaginations and sometimes we
tend to fit the shoe of the characters in which we feel the different emotions of the characters as
we read the story. Books give us inspiration to do great things in life and encourage us to fight
the odds of life bravely. They fill our minds with noble thoughts, awaken our souls and mold our
characters. In reading books, we consider a lot of things first before we start reading it. A good
cover with unique title attracts us to read that particular piece. What gives us interest is not just
the cover and title, it is only a showcase, but rather we are up to whats inside of it. Title is just
an overview of the story, whats inside is the real thing. Relating to organizational behavior,
understanding a person is like a book, you have to read it to know whats really inside.
My own perspective is that people are like books. They have a lot of stories to tell yet
they stay silent and just waiting for someone to read them. I believe that in an organization,
behavior is important to managers because they are the one responsible for supervising the
activities and performance of each employee. Understanding the behavior of your people or
subordinates allows you to see through the situation and the environment of the organization. I
also believe that people are the most valuable assets of the organization. They must be treated
right by their leaders. Good relationship inside the organization is one of the keys towards
achieving success. To achieve positive good relationship with the other people, one must
understand the behavior of others. They must not only base their judgment according to what
their eyes can see but they must dig deeper to be able to understand whats really into them. One
of the most familiar phrase I can relate to this is, Dont judge a book by its cover. And as to
human beings as well, dont judge them by their physical appearances because we dont know
whats really inside them. We must understand the real reasons for their actions.
From the case I read in relation to this piece of work, David Neeleman has understand the
stories behind the actions of his people as CEO and founder of the JetBlue Airlines. He preferred
to look at on how to value his employees by understanding their behavior like reading a book.
The employees are like book who have their own stories to be read, and Neeleman is the reader
who is responsible to understand and discover the strengths and weaknesses of the character in
the story which is the life of his employees. He understand the behavior of his employees not by
merely knowing them according to their looks and actions. He look after their wants and needs
not just inside the organization but also their personal desires as human beings in the society. He
just not understand his employees but also the customers. As a pilot of the JetBlue, he also look
after the needs and wants of the passengers. It was mentioned in the readings which Neelemen

said that, We have a saying at JetBlue that youre either serving a customer or serving someone
who is serving a customer. He was able to work with his employees in a way that they are like a
family who work and help each other struggling to attain their goals in the organization. He first
build a good relationship with his subordinates as he lead and motivate them as they work.
Through his excellent leadership, he and his employees are able to serve the customers by
satisfying their needs, by showing their concern and by providing good service to each customer.
I admire him for prioritizing other people as he complied with the needs and wants of both
employees and the customers.
Neeleman is like a pilot staying in the cockpit, wherein there is always a competition.
You need to fight whether you will lose or win. As to in organization as well, you need to
struggle and fight the trials as you go along the way to meet organizational success. Through his
good leadership and good relationship with his people, he gained the respect and trust of his
employees and other people. He remained strong amidst the hardships they went through when
one of the JetBlue Flight crashed. He was able to motivate his people at that time. And through
teamwork and cooperation, the organization became successful. In fact, their organization are the
highest in terms of profit margins in the industry. The organization achieved its goals because
they chose the right people who have the qualities and potential capabilities to help contribute to
its organizational success. Neeleman as a contributor to people-oriented business, he was able to
understand the different stories of his employees by flipping every page of their books.
Like in story books, characters are the most important element inside it whereas in reality
people are the most important element in an organization. And amidst the hardship in the
organization, employees also want to feel that they are important, and thats what Neeleman did.
He treated his people right and make them feel how important they are in the organization. I
believe that people are not just commodities to be used to gain profit, they must also be treated
like a family. A good leader must understand their needs, be it physical, psychological or
emotional needs. Just like Harold Kushner once said, I think of life as a good book. The further
you get into it, the more it begins to make sense. As a professional in the future, dealing and
interacting with people is necessary to build good formal relationship with other people.
Knowing the life of other people is very interesting in a way that you will understand whats
really into them and the reasons behind their actions. To conclude this piece of work,
organizational behavior is not just interacting with other people in the organization but also on
how you commit yourself to them as you understand them better. Connect yourself with other
people like reading a book. As you flip the pages, you will get to know the characteristics and
behavior of the characters. In an organization, as you get along with other people, you will get
know who they really are as an employee and as a human being in the society.
