Title: Gandanta and Sandhi

Post by: TC on October 27, 2012, 10:47:44 AM

There is a principle in Jyotish which assumes that the strength of a Juncture point (Sandhi) is weak and ill defined
due to the forced intermingling of two different energies.
There are many such weak points in in the Zodiac. For example the last Degree and the 1st one degree of Aries and
Taurus is a Sandhi. In Sanskrit the word "Sandhi" (also spelt Samdhi) has several meanings. "Sandhi" in Sanskrit
means "critical juncture". It also carries such diverse meanings as "seam" "boundary " "space between heaven
and earth" "cervice and "hinge".
A Gandanta point is a portion of the zodiac where a Rashi as well as a Nakshatra ends its span and where
another Rashi and Nakshatras begins its span. Gandanta (Sanskrit - gandanta, from gand- 'knot', and anta'end'.) Gandanta is a knot in Jyotisha.
The portions where the Gandanta points are located
nakshatra, the beginning of the span of Aries Rashi
Rashi and Ashlesha Nakshatra, the beginning of the
span of Scorpio Rashi and Jyeshtha Nakshatra, and
and Mula Nakshatra.

are at the end of the span of Pisces Rashi and Revati

and Ashvin Nakshatra, the end of the span of Cancer
span of Leo Rashi and Magha Nakshatra, the end of the
finally, the beginning of the span of Sagittarius Rashi

Pisces (Meena) is a watery sign and Aries (Mesha) is a fiery sign. All the 4 Padas of the Nakshatra Revati end in the
last degree of Pisces. The Nakshatra Ashvini starts in Aries. Now imagine a Graha which is at 0 Degree in Aries. The
Graha is just out a watery Sign and is now about to enter into a fiery sign. A Graha placed in such a degree is
bound to be weak ill defined and indicate major problems in the native's life unless the grahas involved are
strengthened by appropriate Upayas.
similarly, Graha caught in 0 degrees in Leo is going to be in the same trouble since the Graha is just out of a watery
sign and is now entering a fiery sign. Ashlesha Nakshatra ends all its portions in Cancer and Magha begins in Leo.
lastly another junction point is in between Scorpio and Sagittarius. here Scorpio is a watery sign while Sagittarius is

Print Page - Gandanta and Sandhi

http://www.vedicforum.com/miscellaneous-26/gandanta-and-sandhi/?action=printpage;PHPSES...

a fiery sign. Again the Nakshatra of Jyeshtha ends its portions in in Scorpio while the Nakshatra Mula starts its
portions in the Rashi of Sagittarius.
If you sit back and analyse what I have written above, you will realize that the Nakshatras involved are only owned
by Budha and Ketu. Budha stands for the "Intellect" and the "thinking mind". Ketu as we know, is one Graha who can
pervert the intellect with ease. Now you will be able to understand why Gandanta is a serious affliction.
It would be better to illustrate a Gandanta point with a picture, for they say, a picture speaks a 1000 words, without
uttering a word.

while a lot of Jyotishis subscribe to the rule that a Graha caught in a Gandanta is bound to create trouble, ......
experience shows that this rule cannot be applied to all Grahas and to all Gandanta points. Certain Grahas seem to be
unafflicted when they are caught in certain portions of the Gandanta points. Let me illustrate this with an example.
For the record, some Jyotishis hold that a graha is subject to the rule of Gandanta only when it is transiting within 1
Ghati or 24 minutes. Some Jyotishis hold that a Graha is weak only when it is in the first and the last degree of a
Gandanta Rashi, while others hold that a Graha which is within 3Deg20 is subjected to the effects of Gandanta. I
personally feel that a Graha within less than 1.5 degrees is subject to the effects of Gandanta, and a Graha which is
within 1 Ghati is subject to severe effects of Gandanta.

A cursory glance will reveal that the 2nd and the 5th Bhava lord Guru is in serious trouble because he is at 00Deg28
in Sagittarius. Similarly, the 10th lord Ravi is at 1Deg40 in Leo and so is in a Gandanta degree.
Yet, Sean penn, who saw Guru dasha at the age of 10 years and two months, started his movie career in Guru dasha
Ravi Bukthi. This dasha scheme gave him a role in the movie "taps"
The 10th Bhava lord Ravi is worth examining closely. Ravi gets directional strength in the 10th. But what is truly
remarkable about his Sun is that it falls in his own or exaltation sign in 9 of 10 dashavargas, including the navamsha,
giving it a whopping 19 points in the 20 point varga vimshopaka bala scheme.
What about Guru? Guru is strong due to his Retrogression giving him him Cheshta bala. It is important to note that
Guru and Ravi, are in their own Rashis. This placement greatly modifies the effects of Gandanta.

Here is a case of Gandanta which managed to take the life of a young girl. This Gandanta is the deadliest Gandanta,
when compared to the others. This Gandanta is so deadly, that Rishi Parashara dedicated a separate chapter for it

(chapter 93 - remedies for births in Abukta Mula)

In chapter 92 Rishi Parashara states Quote

5. Amongst these Gandantas the last 6 Ghatikas of Jyeshtha and first 8 Ghatikas of Mula
are known, as Abhukta Mula.
In chapter 93 Rishi Parashara states Quote

1-2. The ruling deity of Jyeshtha is Indra and the ruling deity of Mula is Rakshasa. As
both the deities are inimical to each other, this Gandanta is considered, as the most evil.
A boy, or girl, born during the period of Abhukta Mula, should either be abandoned, or
the father should not see the face of the child for 8 years.

The lady, is a beautiful, smart, brilliant, kind, and endearing personality. Born in a extremely cultured and financially
well to do family, she breezed through her academics with ease. Note the exalted 4th and 5th Bhava lord Shani who
is exalted in the lagna. also note the conjunction of the 9 Bhava lord Budha, along with the Lagna lord Shukra in the
11th Bhava, aspecting the 5th.
She had a masters in Clinical Embryology along with a two year research fellowship in Reproductive medicine from
the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA. She had over 7 years experience in most ART techniques. She was a Research
Fellow, In-charge, in ART Training from February, 2009 to January, 2011 for the center for Reproductive medicine
Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, OH, USA. Brilliant in her academics and Career, she was a dear friend of
mine. I cannot imagine that she is not amongst us today. She was indeed in her budding stage of her career, and had
she been alive, she would have gone places and earned several accolades for herself. A very very promising career
and life, was snuffed out, due to one aberration in her horoscope.
So what went wrong? One the outside, the lady appeared to be a bright, Jovial, hearty, party animal. She was
indeed, a beautiful, smart, brilliant, kind, and endearing personality. But on the inside she was a tormented soul. she
suffered from extreme bouts of depression. her habit of indulging in cigarettes, and alcohol did not help matters.
She was extremely figure conscious and did not maintain even a semblance of a healthy diet. rumors that she was
Anorexic did the rounds. But I cannot confirm it. see how a persons life style and life's choices, comes back to
haunt then in a critical situation. She visited several psychiatrists, who diagnosed her as having a Borderline
personality disorder. Some doctors came to the conclusion that she was suffering from a Bi - polar disorder and
prescribed medications he same.
The medication took a toll on her life style, her health and career. This in turn, fueled her depression. Still, she
managed to hang on to her sanity, and fell in love with a boy, who, though not from her caste, was extremely well
cultured, hailed from a very reputed family, and was financially well to do. they courted for about a year and decided
to tie the knot. They got married on the 31st of March 2012. The marriage was a grand event with a gala show.
things should have only gotten better for her from here. What more can one want in life? For an outsider, she was
the epitome of all things good, that life can bestow to one, who possessed ample luck. But what was her opinion of
life?
The marriage only added fuel to her fire. Though the couple loved each other, her mood swings and her depression,
did not help the marriage. there was a constant strain in the relationship. The boy tried his best to keep her happy,
and yes, there were times when there was extreme joy in the relationship. but, the Grahas play their own games
don't they? She began to turn suicidal. She made a couple of attempts trying to commit suicide by consuming an
overdose of prescription medications, along with sedatives. These attempts were nothing more than a blank ploy, of
grabbing attention. Neither was the dosage life threatening, but neither was the dosage small enough to be ignored.

Print Page - Gandanta and Sandhi

http://www.vedicforum.com/miscellaneous-26/gandanta-and-sandhi/?action=printpage;PHPSES...

So she was rushed to the hospital on various occasions for a stomach wash. all this time, seeking attention, and
crying wolf.
on the 15th of November 2012, post lunch, there was a small argument between the couple. This time, she made up
her mind to "up the ante" and over dramatize the situation by crying wolf once again. This was to be her last. In a
momentary lapse of reason, she consumed a mixture prescription medications and sedatives, only this time, the
dosage was a lot than previous times. Look at how stupid decisions, cascade into a critical situation, she had been
ignoring a persistent chest congestion from the past four or 5 days. The overdose of medication, soon knocked her
unconscious. The doctors suspect that she must have aspirated some of her gastric juices into her lungs while was
unconscious (Aspiration Pneumonia). By the time she was found, what started out as a a silly game, became a deadly
battle for survival. The husband found her that evening at around 18.00 Hrs in an unconscious state and rushed her
to the hospital.
The persistent chest congestion, the aspiration of the gastric juices into the lungs, her Anorexia, the previous
nights alcohol, the smoking in spite of the lung infection, all added up to a life threatening level. he condition
deteriorated rapidly. The doctors put her on a extra strong course of Antibiotics, and put her on a Ventilator. About
19:25 on the 16th of November 2012, she went into a massive cardiac arrest, coupled with Acute respiratory
distress syndrome (ARDS). several attempts to revive her went futile. She was declared dead at 19:35.
The chart looks marvelous. There is a excellent Sasa yoga forming in the Lagna. The well placed 11th lord in the
10th, is a combination to die for - no pun intended. ::) Note the exalted 4th and 5th Bhava lord Shani who is exalted
in the lagna. also note the conjunction of the 9 Bhava lord Budha, along with the Lagna lord Shukra in the 11th Bhava,
aspecting the 5th. The 2nd lord, though in a Mrityu avasta, is in his own house, and aspects the 5th bhava from the
Lagna. Superb. spite of all this, she laid dead on a autopsy table. why?
The answer lies with the position and condition of Chandra. Chandra is the significator of the Mind. Intelligence and
wisdom are seated in the Mind, and so, it is Chandra, that is the pivot for all human faculty. An aberration to
Chandra, and all the Raja and Dana yoga in a horoscope will be rendered futile. This is the first lesson my Guru
taught me in Jyotish. In the lady's case, Chandra is at 0.36 Degrees in Mula Nakshatra. Chandra has crossed
just three Ghatis (1 Ghati is 24 minutes) which forms a Abukta Mula Gandanta dosha. What makes matters
worse, is that Shani, the 4th and the 5th lord, aspects Chandra. Don't be fooled by Shani's Yogakaraka status. Yes,
he has bestowed her with plenty, but at the same time, Shani as a exalted Malefic wrecked havoc on Chandra, the
significator of the mind. What made matters worse, is the conjunction of the 6th lord with Chandra. This
conjunction resulted in a mental illness which ultimately played a part in taking her life.

Here is another case of Gandanta.
Doug Flutie Jr is the son of Doug Flutie, perhaps the Canadian Football League's greatest player ever. A beautiful boy, happy
and affectionate, he has a vocabulary of maybe four words at age six; he is autistic. At 2 1/2, he was speaking in full sentences
and was perfectly normal; a year later, he totally regressed. He would go into a corner and stop speaking to anyone. He is
strong and healthy, but does not understand how to play with a toy. His only symptom of autism is twirling whatever he has in
hand, whether it's a potato chip or a ball. Dougie goes to a special-needs school. He has few functioning skills, not so much as
being able to feed himself.
take a look at his chart,
[attachimg=2]
It is easy to see what went wrong here. Shukra the lagna lord is debilitated within one degree of his peak debilitation point.
There is no neecha Bhanga either from the lagna or from the Moon since Shukra is not in a Kendra. The dispositor Budha is in
deep trouble caught between Rahu and Kuja, in a deep Gandanta degree in a fiery sign. To make matters worse, Budha is in
the Nakshatra of Ketu who is in his negative Moolatrikona sign Gemini. Ketu is in the Nakshatra of Ardra ruled by Rahu. Rahu
is in the nakshatra of Shukra. Shukra is debilitated Vargothama. Guru and Chandra art in the Nakshatra of Shukra. Do I need
to say more?

Now note the dasha - Rahu - Guru - Kuja - Ketu.

Print Page - Gandanta and Sandhi

http://www.vedicforum.com/miscellaneous-26/gandanta-and-sandhi/?action=printpage;PHPSES...

The Significator of the father is Ravi. Here Ravi is the 9th lord. Guru is with the 9th lord. Kuja is in the 9th, and is in the
Nakshatra of Ravi. Guru is also in the Nakshatra of Ravi. The 9th house signifies the father.
Now note the degree of Ravi. Ravi is not only in a extreme Gandanta degree. I have said before, that not all Gandanta's are
created equal. Note that in this degree, Ravi gets his exalted Navamsha. But that is where the story ends. Ravi is also subject
to a Shankaranti dosha. While the exaltation in the navamsha, is a balm on Ravi's wounds, it is not enough to rescue him to
the extent that he remains benefic. This is why, I am always skeptical of the glorification of the Navamsha chart. Kuja, gave the
full effects of his dispositor Ravi in his Pratyantar dasha. Look at how much damage their father did to their lives. The story is
there for all to see. This one, was truly scripted by the stars.

a "wise" and "spiritually exalted" astrologer suggests a remedy, :P
[attachimg=2]
This remedy is like wearing a condom on the finger to practice birth control, The "astrologer" has given a remedy for the Moon,
completely ignoring Budha, when it is Budha who should be addressed first. Not that the Moon is not afflicted, it is no doubt,
but the pressing problem is Budha. Let me tell you why, .............
[attachimg=3]
Note Budha's position. Even though is in his own Nakshatra, (Not that it helps. There is no point since he is weak by debilitation
himself) is in a extreme degree of Gandanta. That Weakness is further Amplified by the aspect of Saturn, who regardless of
being a Yogakaraka, seated in a Good Bhava, remains a natural malefic. Note that Budha, the dispositor of Shani, is the one
that is in crisis. Shani is in the Nakshatra of Ardra, ruled by a debilitated Rahu. Of what help can Shani be? Budha's dire
placement is further amplified by the 6th lord, both of them in conjunction in the 6th Bhava (Diseases / illness, Maladies). It is
the Gandanta that has put the final nail on budha's coffin.
Its a crying shame, when a astrologer, fails to identify the Graha that causing the problem, but suggests a remedy for a Graha
that has little to do with the actual problem. This is like prescribing a analgesic to cure chronic constipation.

TC,

I think there might be two causes why he went for Moon.

1. Budha might want to roast the person a bit more before ending up with correct remedy.
2. My guru used to say something about moon and I use a modified version
"Moon is what we see , Moon is what we hear, Moon is what we EXPERIENCE"
May be the guy giving remedy was thinking along the above lines.

Yes upto now it was so,as she believed that saint is Bhramma, Vishnu, Shiva everything.
But now scenario is different, one of guru she was following is in jail , to her next guru she kept pressing to search a
millionaire groom for her which didnt happen, so she thrown away all his pictures n CD.
Now she wants to visit all pilgrimage, but till date didn't happen.

Dear Srajan,
Gandanta is one of the negative effects that can befall a Graha. The more the affliction to a Graha, the more a rise of negative
behavioral traits are guaranteed. In the case you have given above, note the affliction to the lagna lord and the 4th lord. I have
observed at times, that a mental aberration that results out of the affliction of the Moon, is less dangerous to the society and to
their near and dear ones, than a aberration arising out of the affliction to Budha and Guru. It is better to have a lunatic you
can lock up, that a intelligent criminal who you can do nothing about, because that intelligent criminal constantly come up with
ways to outsmart the law. Case in point - Fank abagnale.
The lady you are talking about, ........... note the position of Budha, who is the key element to this chart. Budha is the Lagna
lord, the 4th lord, and is in the 10th, thus gaining a connection to all key houses of the horoscope. Budha is debilitated, but
worse, the dispositor Guru, is also debiliated, without earning a neecha bhanga. This Budha is in the 10th no doubt, but is in
the Nakshatra of Shani, who is the 8th and the 9th lord, in the 12th. The 9th and the 12th are two Bhavas that are connected
to spirituality. Now see the aberration in her thought process with regards to spirituality. To make matters worse, this Budha is
aspected by Kuja from the 7th. Kuja is the 6th lord, who is within one degree of Rahu. The evidence is clear and simple. It is
Budha that is afflicted.
