Problem statement Problem II

A solid rectangular prism is machined to create the object shown in Figure 1. The original prism
had a square face with side lengths of 4.00 inches and a depth of 5.00 inches. Using the
dimensions of the original prism and the dimensions shown in Figure 1*, determine:
A. The volume of the rectangular prism (i.e., before machining), in cubic inches
B. The volume of the resulting object as shown in Figure 1, in cubic inches
C. The percentage of the original prism that is removed in machining process. The percent
removed can be found using the following equation:

% removed

Voriginalobject Vnew object

Voriginalobject

100

* For those not familiar with how dimensions of holes are reported in engineering drawings:
The hole note indicates: 1) there is a 1.25 inch diameter hole through the object and 2) there is
also a 'shorter' hole at one end (called a counterbore), which is 0.50 inch deep and 2.00 inches in
diameter.

Theory
A.
Volume of the original rectangular prism is found by using the original dimensions with
the formula for volume of a rectangular prism.
B.
Volume of the machined object is found by taking the volume of the machined
rectangular prism and machined triangular prism and subtracting the volume of the hole and
counterbore.
C.
Percent removed can be found using the given equation above.
Equations to be used:

Problem statement Problem III

A closed conical tank (diameter: 1.50 m; height 3.00 m), sitting on its circular base, has 1.00 m
depth of water. Suppose this tank is turned upside down and is made to stand vertically that way
(i.e., on its vertex) using some device. Calculate the new depth of water in this conical tank.
Report your answer in meters, using 3 significant figures.
